Services in SiteStudio Designer WCM_PLACEHOLDER and WCM_BEGIN_EDIT_SESSION

Hi
We are attempting an integration of Weblogic Portal with UCM for a WYSIWYG feel. The 2 new services mentioned in Studio 10rg4 look like they can help us in integrating with the same.
I have installed the Site Studio component and tried invoking the service but the browser (IE) returned nothing.
However, the examples in ..\publish\resources\wcm\test\sitestudio invoke the same service and are able to connect to this service. This is because of certain js funtions which are loaded.
Is that a pre-requisite to load the service ?
Or can i simply invoke the service using the following url ?
http://<content-server>/idc/idcplg?IdcService=WCM_PLACEHOLDER&dataFileDocName=<content_id>
Running Content server version : 10.1.3.4.1
which would require me to not install CS10gR3CoreUpdate and CS10gR3NativeUpdate.
Any pointers on how to start or invoke the service ?

- does it give access to the placeholder menu (like in a site studio website) ?
Not sure what you mean by placeholder menu .
- does it highlight the contribution region too ?
Yes
- if yes, does it give access to the same options like "switch content", "document info", "edit" ?
Yes
- Is the edit form available from WCI like a site studio website ?
From any external app where you have included WCM_BEGIN_EDIT_SESSION service it is possible .
- Is the FCKEditor working as well in an edit form from a portlet as from a site studio website ?
Yes
- when switching content, can we browse into UCM and/or local system ?
Yes
- would you have already done such integration showing it is feasible ?
Oh Yes.
