Services on second Ethernet port on Xserve

Hi,
I have an Xserve that is working really well. On en0 (192.168.127.3), I have connected a D-Link wireless router/ADSL modem. This connects to the internet, and through this I can connect to the Xserve. The Xserve serves DNS, DHCP, Web (external and internal), Mail, VPN and file services on this port. This port runs at 100Mb.
I would like to replicate all of the above services (not VPN, obviously) on the port en1 so I can run it at 1000Mb to dedicated CAD stations. Currently the address is set at 192.168.192.3, and DHCP & file services work, but the Web doesn't (external or internal), and as yet I haven't tried the other services.
I've tried NAT, but nothing seems to happen.
Any ideas?
thanks.

Hi,
Sorry for the last mail. Late in the day.
Anyway, all of the services are now fixed on the Xserve (almost). The problem was that I didn't have my firewall on (I'm behind a hardware firewall).
However, there is one remaining problem which I cannot solve. On one interface is an ethernet plotter (non-postscript), and the the users on the other interface want to use it, but I cannot see anyway of doing it.
Any Ideas?
Thanks.

  • Second ethernet port functionality

I was wondering if/how one can use the second ethernet port on my G5 to connect a second computer to the internet? So in other words I want to use the G5 to "pass through" to the network, and beyond. Now I have two complications (and no doubt big ones)
    1) I am connected to a windows network
    2) It is a windows operating system on the laptop.
(There are programs on the PC that don't run on the Apple. So I am stuck.) Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • Qt straming on second ethernet port

we have an xserve with the two onboard ethernet ports, however, we are only using one at this time. the one has a static ip address the other is turned off. we do not have the capability of link aggregating them. the server is on a university network with internet2 capabilities.
is there away that i can accept rtsp requests on one and send the rtp on the other (is it simpily chosing to relay broadcast through a different server: option in qtss publisher?)? if so or not what am i missing and and are there step to follow to make this happen? how do i set up the other ethernet port? will this help with performace?

  • Directing traffic to second ethernet port

    Hello,
What is the process used to direct certain IP addresses or a range of IP addresses to the second ethernet connection on a Mac Pro? I have a set of Mac Pros that use the first connection for internet access and corporate server connections using Samba. But the second ethernet connection is used for a lan between the Mac Pros and printers. It currently works but it take a bit for the "connect to servers" dialog to connect to a Mac Pro on the lan because I think it is searching Connection 1 first which has hundreds of Windows servers attached to it. And it takes several minutes to connect if our service has an interruption on Connection 1. All of the Mac Pros and printers are set up to use a manual IP address (192.168...) The Mac Pro workstations use Snow Leopard and we have a Mac Pro Server running Lion Server that we use to conntrol a network RAID. Thanks for your help.

    Thanks guys.
First, it seems to me that the service order is already set up correctly. I have Connection 1 on top and that's what we use for internet connection. If I change Connection 2 on top our internet connection is disabled. Also as Grant suggested we do have it set up to use different IPs and subnets. Connection 1 uses DCHP and has a static IP of 172.x.x.x and a subnet ending in 128. Connection 2 is set up manually with an IP address of 192.x.x.x and a subnet ending in 0.
I would just like to tell each Mac Pro when it trys to connect to a server with an IP of 192.x.x.x to use Connection 2 instead of trying to find it first on Connection 1. The AppleScript within an Automator program that we use to connect to servers is:
    tell application "Finder"
                        open location "afp://[username]:[password]@192.x.x.x:548"
              end tell
Make sense? It has been suggested to me that I set up persistent routes, but I haven't found a solution online that matches our senario enough to implement it. Any ideas? Thanks again.

  • Cluster via Mac Pro second ethernet port?

I'm on an enterprise 10/100 LAN and want to link two Mac Pros together for a cluster. I don't want to use the Internet Ethernet-1 port because it's slow and IT will probably throw a fit if they figure out I'm transferring massive amounts of data over the network. Consequently, I'll try to get a 1000Mb router and make my own gigabit LAN linked into the building network, however, IT will throw a fit if someone is operating behind a firewall inside their precious network.
Anyway, until I get this router situation worked out, I would like to link the two machines via a single Ethernet cable, while still retaining my Internet connection on the other port. In my trials, this doesn't work. I appear only able to use the active Ethernet port w/ the LAN.
    Any ideas here?
Also, any suggestions on a reasonable quality router would be bonus help.
    Thanks

I've tried this before a while ago. I had the LAN/cloud setup on port 1, and directly connected to another Mac on port 2 and no dice w/ manual network settings. IIRC, I couldn't even select it in Qmaster.
I guess, first, has anyone got this to work? I'll give it another shot, but it would be nice to know someone has got this working before I start banging my head again.

  • Need a second Ethernet port from PPoE  Modem

I am on AT&T's sbcglobal.net PPoE network with my G5. I want to connect my ibook by ethernet to this modem that has one ethernet output. I bought an ethernet switch, connected the output from the modem to one of the switch ports, and each computer to other ports.
i can get online with either computer but only one at a time. Do I have to call AT&T and get anothe rIP address assigned?

I originally had a Linksys that quit and had another old one I couldn't get to work on my DSL.
The guy at the computer store told me the switch was the easy way to get a second connection if I didn't want to network, so that was were I was coming from.
I was curious why this was not working and if the reason was because I would have to have 2 IPs from the modem or if I didn't understand the switch.
I will probably go get a new router, but I see where a lot of server providers are providing modems with a built-in router, so I looking at this possibility.
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Ethernet Pass Through second G5 port?

I am trying to set up an old dual 2.0 G5 powermac as a media device in my living room; and i'm banging my head against the wall trying to determine how to get it on my wifi network.
i have been trying for the last hour and a half to get my Airport Express (its old, 2005?) to connect to my wifi, and as far as i can tell, it doesn't; here's my thought though.. since i have a RJ45 cable running already to the living room for my ATT Uverse, is it possible to connect directly to the G5 first, and connect the Uverse into the second ethernet port on the g5; is this theoretically possible?
next attempt will be to use my old airport ufo base station… who knows

Hi Cory, yes, it should be possible, using Internet Sharing on the G5, From Ethernet 1 to Computers using Ethernet 2 for instance...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

  • How to specify one ethernet port for network home directories (other for normal filesharing)?

So I'm trying to get Home Directories up and running on a 10.6.8 Xserve (waiting until I get my NFS sharepoints migrated to a Linux server [for other reasons] before moving up to 10.7 Server). But posting here since that will be happening in the next few weeks, and it might be applicable now (so I can at least get that resolved ahead of time).
I have a different DNS entry for each ethernet port: server.office.domain.com at 192.168.0.11 for the first, and homes.services.internal at 192.168.0.10 for the second. DNS lookups for both resolve correctly (as does the reverse lookup).
If I use the Server Admin to pick a sharepoint as an automount for Home Directories, everything is fine, but it picks the server.office.domain.com hostname. Picking that works just fine, but that is also the connection that feeds the filesharing. I'd prefer to split that home directory traffic out onto the second ethernet port. So I tried just duplicating the initial connection (since it can't be edited directly in Workgroup Manager) and changing the hostname to the internal one, but I get an error when attempting to log in (the client login screen gives a very helpful "Couldn't login because of an error" error message) and don't see anything in the server logs.
The client machine shows the following line:
    Code:
    10/20/12 5:27:42.688 PM authorizationhost: ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dirPath:username:] |
         PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication( url=afp://homes.services.internal/Users,
         homedir=/Network/Servers/homes.services.internal/Volumes/HomeDirectories/Users/ user123, name=user123 ) returned 45
(added line breaks so it didn't extend off the page)
So it looks like this is failing because the automount isn't in place, but I'm not sure how to work that out either (i.e. how do I add that making sure it uses the internal hostname?).
Any suggestions on getting this to work?
I realize one solution is just to LACP the two ports, but that is a different ball of wax (I may do that later if I get a 4 port ethernet card and performance limitations demand it).

A possible solution might be this.
On ADSLBOX and CABLEBOX configure different subnets for the LAN, e.g.
    ADSLBOX:    192.168.1.0/24
    CABLEBOX: 192.168.2.0/24
The MEDIABOX gets these static IPs:
    ADSL-LAN: 192.168.1.2
    CABLE-LAN: 192.168.2.2
On the MEDIABOX, configure the two network interfaces using two routing tables.
    The ADSL-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip route add default via 192.168.1.1 table 1
    The CABLE-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2 table 2
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1 table 2
    The main routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2
    # use the CABLE-LAN gateway as default, so general internet traffic from MEDIABOX runs over CABLEBOX
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1
    define the lookup rules
ip rule add from 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip rule add from 192.168.2.2 table 2
    To test the setup:
    ip route show
    ip route show table 1
    ip route show table 2
I don't know how to persist something like this in ArchLinux using netctl. Might require to write a special systemd unit for it. Above is a working example from a RedHat box at my company.

  • Can i configure each ethernet port to fixed and auto ip adresses?

Hi, i will be using a SSL Matrix Controller with Logic 9. This connects thru ethernet and requires a FIXED address. However, this Mac also needs to connect to the internet which doesnt use a fixed a address. Can I keep port one the way it is, and configure port two as fixed and have them both work properly? Are they completely independent of each ther?
    Thx

Do you use a Router that you control?
If so, you can have fixed addresses easily -- just assign an address Manually that is in the same range, but above or below the ones your Router is likely to pass out automatically.
You can also assign a manual address to the second Ethernet port, but using it this way is complex. What does the device maker recommend?

  • How to create a bridge between the two given GB Ethernet ports.

    Hi,
I have a MAC Pro in my test set up. is there any way to create a bridge in between the two given Gigabyte ports and control the bandwidth for the device connected to Ethernet-2 while getting the internet connection from Ethernet-1.

I believe you can manually set the bit rate for the second Ethernet port when it is operating as Ethernet Sharing (essentially turning that port into a limited Router).
There are no standard tools in Mac OS X for inspecting the packets there, but there may be tools available for networking developers/troubleshooters to do that.
When that feature is enabled, the port appears from your Mac to have a "self-assigned" IP Address -- a semi random Address in the 169.254.xxx.yyy range. From the connected devices, it will appear to have a legitimate private Router Address, often 192.168.1.1

  • Setting up 2nd Ethernet port for NAS connection

    Hi
I want to split out my internet and NAS drive access across my two Ethernet ports.
Port 1 is connected to my router and connects to the internet.
Port 2 is connected to a gigabit switch and then into two NAS drives. I have set up the second ethernet port with a manual ip and it says it is connected. But when I use Command K to connect to the ip address of the NAS, it cannot connect. Previously this worked fine when everything was going out of Ethernet port 1.
I suspect I have not set up Ethernet port 2 correctly. So far I have set it up for manual configuration and given it an ip address of 192.168.1.17 (the NAS is 192.168.1.18, Ethernet 1 is 192.168.119). Nothing else has been entered.
    Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Ping the destination address 192.168.1.19 from a terminal window and see if it responds.

  • Configuring Ethernet Ports

I have a Power Mac G5 that has 2 ethernet ports on the back. The first I use to connect to the internet. I would like to use the other one to connect to a Xerox printer. I think I have to use AppleTalk to do that, but I'm not sure that is correct. When I try to do that I'm informed by OSX that AppleTalk can only be active on one network port at a time.
How can I use the second ethernet port to connect to my printer?
    Patrick

Thanks for your reply. I don't know very much about ethernet/appletalk, but somehow I managed to get the printer connected to the network. But it turned out that the setup wouldn't allow me to upload, via FTP a new driver, so I had to reconfigure the network anyway, and connected it to a DSL router. That works too.
In the process of learning more I've come across the term "CUPS driver" a few times, but I don't know what that is. Can you explain it to me or point me in the right direction to read about it?

  • I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port

I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light. My research has led me to a dead-end so far. Running 10.3.9 on my server. XServe Dual 2.3
I want to have File services and the various other duties pushed through one ethernet port, and print services on the other. I know there is probably a config file to make one simple edit, but I can not find it, or perhaps a "defaults" type command.
Also, where is this "command-line administration guide" that I keep running across on Apple's support?
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Similar issue here too. Is it the subnet? Basically, I'm having a problem printing to an AirportExpress-served printer. Our network looks like this:
    (From Outside...>>>...to Inside)
    (Public IP) DSL Modem
    ...(10.0.0.x) Airport Express -- HP DesignJet 100 USB -- Airtunes/stereo
    ...(10.0.0.x) NetGear Wireless Router
    ...(10.0.0.x nic 0) Mac OS X Server (192.168.0.x nic1)
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
The printer driver does not appear to be able to do IP printing, it assumes a direct USB connection. We can setup the OS X Server with the printer served by the Airport Express, as it is found via Bonjour, and then we share its queue via Server Admin. The problem is that the LAN clients cannot print to this server queue. The printer gets stopped at the server.
If we turn OFF the OS X Server's firewall, printing works from both the clients and obviously from the Server. I think my question is this: what ports or services need to be turned on in order for the clients to print? There is no clear checkbox for "Bonjour Printer Sharing", and I'm curious what ports this would open, and if it would be safe. I thought it would work because we're pushing the print job up through the firewall, but apparently some response needs to come back through the firewall, and that's what's not happening.
And to tack onto this, how could we also push iTunes to the Airport Express from the Clients? Assuming the music goes over different ports than the print jobs. ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • XServe G5 - hardware indicates both ethernet ports are working; software only sees one

    XServe G5
System Profiler only sees one ethernet port: en0
Server Monitor (Tiger) also only sees en0
But when cables are plugged into both ports, both green link lights come on, and both show blue activity lights.
Whichever switch (Cisco catalyst 2960) is connected to en0 (lower port) works fine; whichever is connected to the second (upper) port does not actually deliver any data to computers attached to that switch, they cannot see the server even though the switch indicates that something (the server) is attached to it.
I know the bottom ethernet port has to be connected first, and then the upper, and I did that. I have restarted the server.
Only the bottom port has ever been used on this server and I'm trying to use the upper one for the first time, do I need to configure it somehow? The manual is extremely minimal and doesn't mention anything about needing to manually configure it.
    Thanks.

To start with the basics did you go into System Preferences > Networking and activate and assign a static IP to the second interface or did you do some other set-up?

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.
