Servlet / JSP Interaction

I know this is probably a "newbie" question, but can someone give me some examples of interaction between a servlet and a JSP page? I am trying to convert a client side Java application that basically parses log files into a servlet that can be initiated through a webpage.
My servlet is called LogExaminer and has a method called "getItStarted" that initiates the log file scanning. I tried just constructing it from the JSP like this, but I got some Java-related errors:
<%
LogExaminer lx = new LogExaminer();
lx.getItStarted();
%>Is this an acceptable method for instantiating the servlet and calling a method?
I tried just putting some simple write commands into the "doGet" method to test viewing the page. However, when I deployed the WAR on JRun, it gives me 404 errors when I try to go to http://hostname:8100/LogParser/LogParserServlet. However, when I try deploying the WAR on JBoss and doing the same thing, it shows me what I expected.
I created a simple "Hello World" JSP page and put that in the WAR file. Both JBoss and JRun were able to recognize it, so it looks like I'm forced to control/execute the servlet with a JSP page.

Is this an acceptable method for instantiating the servlet and calling a methodNo, this is an acceptible way of invoking a normal java class, not a servlet. Servlets need to be instantiated in run by the webserver by means of either calling it using a browser, or linking/redirecting to it from a JSP.
When a servlet cannot be found, this is most likely due to it not being properly mapped inside the web.xml file, or the .class file is not stored in the proper directory. The fact that JBoss could run the servlet is a mystery to me however, one would expect that both servers would behave the same...
One thing that I can think of: is your servlet part of a package? If not that may be the problem, you should always put servlets in a package.

  • Servlet/JSP interaction within the development enviroment

I am looking for some insite into how to have JSP's interact with servlets in the JDev3.1 enviroment.
In developing systems using an MVC pattern, I register (using ServletExec) the servlet for something like action.jsp. Then I use the RequestDispatcher to dispatch to the appropriate JSP. I am looking for insite into how to register a servlet(s) to allow the interaction as described in the JDeveloper enviroment.
    Thanks

  • Servlet ,JSP interaction  without bean

Does the communication between servlet and JSP always need to be through a bean ?
I don't really have an object that i need to work with . I just need to do basic processing operations.

Well there are two basic approaches.
1 - Write the sql query on your page and output the data directly there (using JSTL sql tags of course, NOT scriptlet code :-))
2 - Writing beans to represent the data, and a java class/method that runs the query and loads the data into the bean.
#1 has the advantage of being simple
#2 is a bit more complicated, but has the advantage of being more flexible, and testable. You can test the bean, and its loading method independantly of the JSP.
It is also normally easier to write java code in a java class, as opposed to scriptlet in a JSP.
I am not accepting user inputs. I am displaying data read from the server and let the user choose them. What do you do once the user "chooses" them?

  • Ejb + servlet + jsp

    Hallo everybody,
i try to develop an application with servlet jsp and ejbs but i don't have enough information about this thema.
for example i want to make a simple login szenario :
user type the name and passwd and the system contact with the db and show a wellcome page if the login is succesfull and an error page if the login is unsuccessfull.
    which component does was??
the first page can be a html form and post the name and passwd to a servlet.
in this case servlet can make a connection with the DB and can forward the user to next page or error page. BUT where should i use EJB? can i realize the db connection with ejb ? if yes how can interact the servlet with the ejb and how can i store the information (for example address of user) which i have taken from the DB?
    thanks a lot

    Thanks for the antwort
this means that the servlet connected to DB and execute the sql to authenticate user??
and the second part is my bigger problem :)
what does it mean "it will pass the control
to the enterprise java bean which will be housing the business logic for your application."
what does a java bean really do? how can i find information about them?
and is ther an example in which i can see how servlets, jsps and beans interact??
    thanks

  • (Servlet/JSP based): How to secure calling of one apps from another

I am having two different web application(Servlet/JSP based) on two different servers. For example,
AppsA is on '*http://IP1:PORT1:AppsA*' and AppsB is on '*http://IP2:PORT2:AppsB*'
I am sending a request from AppsA to AppsB for the PDF (ONLY THIS, No more interaction). Which is working fine. But the URL of AppsB i.e. 'http://IP2:PORT2:AppsB' appears in the browser.
But i don't want to show the interaction of AppsB. I have tried to FORWARD the request to AppsB but it only allows relative path.
So how can i make it secured..?
    Thanks.

    Now it's secured...
    Thanks BalusC

  • How to -only- invoke a Servlet/JSP

    Hi,
I would like to invoke a Servlet or JSP inside a standalone application WITHOUT opening a stream. When I use url.openConnection() or con.connect() the servlet/JSP is not executed, I must also do "ObjectInputStream o = new ObjectInputStream(con.getInputStream());" in order to get the servlet/jsp executed.
I just want to invoke the servlet/JSP, because I use the returned data for nothing.
    Thanks

If you openConnection, you might also have to get the output stream from the servlet to make it work properly. (Otherwise, the server, or proxies in-between, might consider that the client has decided it doesn't want the page after all, and may stop requesting it.)
A cheap way to request a page but get less data back would be..
conn.setRequestMethod("HEAD");HEAD is exactly like GET, except it doesn't return the body (just the headers, hence the name.) Not entirely sure if it works on Java.
Failing that, you should be able to just open the input stream, and close it again straight away.

  • How to display RTF File in Browser Using Servlets/JSPs

    Hi All,
I have some RTF Files, which contains some data.
The data needs to be displayed in the frame of jsp page .
How i can display the RTF File Content using either servlets/jsps
Can any body have idea on this.
    Help me out on this.
    With Regards
    Hari

If you only need to display it, consider your HttpServletRequest just as byte stream. :) Just read from ServletInputStream and write it back into ServletOutputStream of HttpServletResponse.
If you want to process incoming XML, please give some details first, what exactly you want to do. :)

  • Problem: package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist

I am a novice JSP programmer. My projects that use any javax.servlet classes are not seeing those at all. I am working with a group of folks using Java SE 1.5. (Note: I'm using Windows so the directory separator is "\")
    What Used to work:
    1. Nearly all my projects were working using Java version 1.6. These projects were developed as examples from Wrox and Apress books about JSP and Struts.
    What has changed:
    1. I un-installed the version 1.6 of JDK and JRE, as well as tomcat, netbeans, and all the associated libraries/jars.
    2. I installed version 1.5 of JDK and JRE, as well as tomcat, netbeans, and all the associated libraries/jars.
    3. I updated my JAVA_HOME, CATALINA_HOME, CLASSPATH, and PATH environmental variables. I made sure that the path to servlet-api.jar (in the tomcat common\lib) is included in the classpath.
    What is wrong:
    1. References to javax.servlet.* are not satisfied--they are flagged in the source code in NetBeans and I get compiler errors with any project containing those references. For example:
... package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist
    import javax.servlet.jsp.*;
    What I've found:
    1. My CATALINA_HOME=C:\Java\Tomcat 5.5
    2. My JAVA_HOME=C:\Java\jdk1.5.0_11
    3. My CLASSPATH=.;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zip;%JAVA_HOME%\lib;%JAVA_HOME%\jre\lib;%JAVA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar;%CATALINA_HOME%\common\lib\servlet-api.jar;C:\Java\logging-log4j-1.2.14\dist\lib\log4j-1.2.14.jar
    4. My PATH=c:\wint\BIN;%JAVA_HOME%\bin;%JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin;%CATALINA_HOME%\bin;C:\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin;D:\MiKTeX 2.5\miktex\bin;C:\Perl\bin\;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\;C:\SFU\Perl\bin\;C:\SFU\common\;C:\Program Files\Lahey-Fujitsu Fortran\v7.1\Bin;C:\Program Files\Lahey-Fujitsu Fortran\v7.1\Win32\Bin
    What I need:
    1. I need to have some reference to the servlet classes satisfied in my configuration. Any help is appreciated.
    thanks
    jondr

Oh. I got some over-the-shoulder debug help.
My error was in the classpath specification:
    The path: %JAVA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar
    Should be: %CATALINA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar
    That contains the javax.servlet.jsp.*
    Thimk.

  • Need a good charting library (for use in a servlet/jsp environment)

Anyone know of a good charting library for use in a servlet/jsp environment.

    Use JFreechart combined with cewolf.
    www.object-refinery.com/jfreechart/
To use charts in a jsp page you can use cewolf ( a taglib) based on jfreechart.
    http://cewolf.sourceforge.net/
    Both are free.

So why didn't you think that the JSP forum here wasn't a good place to ask JSP questions like this one?
You can use <c:for-each> with a List. That's how it's designed. I don't understand why you say you can't. Perhaps you were confused by the SQL tags in JSTL. But anyway, you should just return a List from your EJB and forget about using obscure internal JSP classes.

Invocation target exception would meant that an error was encountered calling the setter.
That would focus on this part of the code:
