Set arbitrary origin of objects, outside "Free transform" tool?

Hi,
With Modify≫ Transform≫ Free Transform a nice thing is that we can move the origin, unlike with other tools that the origin is the center of the image.
If I am using other tools such as the one recommended by groove25 in http://forums.adobe.com/message/4443283#4443283, is there any way I can set arbitrary origin?
Bob

You'll notice with the Star Auto shape, for example, that when you click on the Transform tool to select it, a small black circle (the rotation point) appears in the center of the star. You can drag that circle anywhere you like to relocate the rotation point.

  • Can't warp pasted AI vector Smart Object using Free Transform in PS CS6

    Hi
I pasted a vector object into PS CS6 (13.0.1 x32) today directly from Illustrator CS6 (16.0.1 x32), and selected "Paste as Smart Object" (Windows XP Pro SP3).
I then tried to warp the pasted object using the Free Transform tool by dragging one of the corner handles with CTRL held down (Windows).
This usually warps\distorts the object, but instead, this launched a skew operation.
If I paste as Shape Layer or as Pixels then apply Free Transform, <Ctrl + corner handle drag> performs a warp\distort operation.
Also, if I rasterise the pasted AI object, and then convert to a Smart Object I can warp\distort.
Is it not possible to paste an Illustrator vector in as a Smart Object, and then warp\distort it directly using this technique?
    Thanks for your help.
    Richard

Your right in that on a pasted vector smart one can't warp, distort or perform perspective transforms.
One workaround would be to right click on the vector smart object layer in the layers panel and
    choose convert to smart object.
It depends on what your object is, but you'd probably get better quality from a pasted shape or path, but then you won't be able to open the object
    back in illustrator from photoshop.

  • Free transform tool in Illustrator?

I have drawn a set of boxes, copy and pasted them. I now want to make them look like they vanish into the distance.
So I want to select the free transform tool then hold ctrl, sft, & Alt to make them warp.
Why wont it do it on multiple items?

In the original file, the boxes are trimmed (pathfinder tool) out of one solid shape. I then deleted the outside to leave the individual boxes, so if I select one box now they are all selected as they are cut out of one shape.
    Allreet,
If you really care to get to the bottom of this, you need to describe EXACTLY the steps you performed, and not withold pertinent information preventing anyone from replicating your situtation. The above description makes no sense, but it suggests there is more going on your file than just a few simple paths, which may very well have a bearing on the Free Transform tool seeming to fail. (It's really annoying when someone posts a question resulting in a long thread with others trying to help, only to find that pertinent information has been witheld.)
Why did you use a Pathfinder, and EXACTLY which Pathfinder did you use? (Trim does not do what you describe.) What was the "solid shape"? What was its content, if any? What EXACTLY were the other objects involved, and how many? Which were selected when you applied the Pathfinder? Did you Expand the Pathfinder, or is it still a live effect? Are there any raster images involved in this at all?
    HR,
Neither of your suggested alternate methods (FreeDistort Effect or Warp Envelope) equate to the so-called perspective distortion of the Free Transform Tool. Both of those methods simply distort the content into a "wedge" envelope. The Free Transform Tool logrithmically moves/scales anchorpoints toward/away from the so-called "vanishing point."
You can see the difference by comparing the results when performed on a grid:
Even the "perspective trick" of the Free Distort tool alone does not result in convincing perspective if not followed by other moves. Note that in the top right image, the square "floor tiles" have become grossly stretched. There is no way that the supposedly square tiles, viewed at an angle, would appear taller than their width; quite the opposite would be the case. A second vertical scaling move is required.
None of the above nor other more tedious workarounds in Illustrator come even close to the practicality and utility of the dedicated Perspective Grid toolset built many years ago into FreeHand. It was a true ground-breaking innovation in 2D vector drawing programs; the first-ever real example of how the interface in mainstream Bezier drawing programs could break free of their lamely pervasive vertical/horizontal orientation and provide an environment in which an illustrator is allowed to think like an illustrator, instead of having to continually devise workarounds to achieve what was intuitively done on paper for centuries before these lame flat-design softwares (which is all they really are) appeared.
Adobe, of course, has simply removed this ground-breaking innovation from the market. There is nothing in Illustrator nor in any of the other mainstream Bezier drawing programs that even comes close to it. Adobe has set practical 2D vector drawing development backward by 10 years.

  • Free transform tool fail

    Hello.
Im really frustrated with how the free transform tool works for me (or in that case, it doesnt work)
I am using Illustrator CS4 on a PC.
Adobe Help for that software states:
    Select one or more objects.
Select the Free Transform tool .
Start dragging a corner handle on the bounding box (not a side handle), and then do one of the following:Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS) until the selection is at the desired level of distortion
First of all Im unable to select anything with the free transform tool, so I use the regular selection tool first to select my object.
As you can see after selecting the object I have selected the free transformation tool, grabbed the corner and pressed Control Key on my keyboard (tried both keys as well). The transformation tool refuses to work as it does in Photoshop.
I have tried to reset my keybindings to Illustrator default.
I have tried first clicking the corner, holding it and then pressing down the CTRL without moving the mouse as was stated on some other forums googled with this issue.
I have tried setting my keyboard to American US in Windows.
As you can see the object is a very simple rectangle, its not a part of any type of group.
Im working on a european version of CS4 Master Collection bought in London UK.
I have tried this on a US version that I have at work, it has the same issue.
I have seen and followed the instruction from various YouTUbe movies and the tool simply wont comply to my commands.
    I am pissed.
    Halp pleez?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Placed raster images will not distort with the Free Transform Tool.
Linked (as opposed to embedded) raster images will not distort.
If you enclose an embedded raster image in an Envelope (ex: Make With Mesh, 1 Row 1 Cell), then it can be distorted by the Free Transform Tool using the modifier keys, without having to dink around with the Envelope handles.

  • Free Transform tool rotates incorrectly?

Setup (Macintosh/Illustrator CS3): document one has several anchors of text, some left justified, some right, all one line. Below is a simple set of stroked lines (one path about 7 points) showing an outline of an angled box flap, stroked. Selected copy from the Edit menu.
Document two: pasted these items and selected the Free Transform Tool (E). Bounding box shows with its eight hollow square corners. With the cursor outside of the bounding box, it shows rotate cursor (arrows on each end of curve). Freely rotating this pasted group, the outlined box flap moves as expected, but anchored text rotates twice as fast, sometimes rotating the opposite direction!!?? It won't undo properly either; I have to delete and start from square 1 and pasting. Also, if I convert the text to outline, it does rotate properly; this gives me the impression it only has to do with anchored text.
Any ideas? Anyone else have this issue? Is there a way I can screen/video capture this if I need to show it?
    --Brian

Might look better in some kind of movie format, but here's some images of the problem (thank for the link info Mario):
    http://flickcabin.com/public/viewset/716
Picture 1: Three elements I'm working with= left & right justified text and a 'cup' to help alignment after rotating.
Picture 2: Same elements with the transform tool selected (bounding box being shown).
    Picture 3, 4, 5: Gradual rotation.
As for using the rotate tool, that will work, but for as often as I do this, the rotate tool uses a few more steps and slows me down considerably. I know there's other workarounds like using an action for the times the degree of rotation is known, but that doesn't take the glitch away. If the option is there, it should work, and I do prefer this for its speed especially when working with non-complex things as the pictures show.
Thanks again for any & all help!

  • Free Transform tools

Using free transform tool, it used to be that you can hold down the Shift key while dragging the corner to resize your image/object.
This shortcut no longer gives you a proportional scaling unless you have to click on the Lock in the tool menu.
However, when it comes to scaling type boxes, it works perfectly fine.

@R_Kelly: I am using Ps CC 2014. This happened with my previous version as well.
@normfb I don't mean by the lock layers. What I meant is that when you do scaling using Cmd+T and then hold down Shift to scale the object, usually in previous versions of Ps, that would give you proportionate scaling. However, this no longer works in my last 2 versions of Ps. This has been something that bother me a lot as I am a long time user of keyboard shortcuts. If I have to move my pen/mouse for something I can do with a keyboard, would mean I am wasting my time.

  • CS3 - Free Transform Tool bug

I'm experiencing a very distressing bug when working at high magnifications - in some circumstances (which I can't quite nail down exactly) the Free Transform tool refuses to go into scale mode (it will rotate however) when I'm at 800% or more.
I'm working in Pixel preview at high magnifications, with a clone of the window open to the side @ 100%. I'm working on the zoomed-in window. When I select an object to scale and then select the Free Transform tool, nothing I can do at that magnification allows me to grab the corner handles. If I switch to the zoomed-out window I can scale, but then of course I lose the precision I need (I need to snap to pixels so I need the zoomed in view). I can also zoom out of my zoomed-in view, but again, I lose the ability to be pixel-precise at that point.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Can anyone else duplicate it? I worry that it's my nVidia graphics card because it has all sorts of display issues with Photoshop and with the Creative Suite in general. But it doesn't feel like a graphics card issue since it has to do with the way a tool works, not the way something displays.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

I'm not sure what you mean by my logging in as a new user and trying to reproduce this bug. What exactly am I logging into? We're just talking Illustrator here. If you mean logging out of Windows and logging in as another user, I'm not sure what that will accomplish. Besides, my computer is a 1-user system so I won't be able to easily do that.
I have been able to determine the exact nature of the bug. It occurs when "snap to point" (which should be called "snap to pixel") is turned on and you are zoomed in to the point where your pixels are bigger than your snap tolerance. Illustrator erroneously enforces the snap on your mouse cursor, and won't register the click and drag against the bounding box handle, UNLESS that handle is within snap tolerance of a pixel. This is certainly erroneous behaviour. The snap enforcing should occur on mouse release, to be sure, but certainly not on mouse down. You should be able to pick up a point regardless of any snap condition.
If anyone has CS4 or CS5, try to reproduce the conditions I've described above and see whether it's something that was addressed in a future build.

    Tom

  • CS3 Free Transform Tool does not work at all for distortion

I tried everything, worked with vector objects of different configurations and rasterized objects. Nothing works. When I press Free Transform Tool and go to bounding box corner it become rotate or resize tool. When I click a little bit inside the bounding box and hold Command Key (I tried many keys and without keys) it just moves the whole object, it did not select just one point that I need. Envelope Mesh does not work for the same reason, but I do not need mesh tool. I have Illustrator 13.02, Mac OS 10.4.11
The Free Transform Tool functions exactly as the main selection tool. Please help.

I STILL cannot get this to work. I have tried everything suggested in this thread. I have followed the directions in the help menus explicitly. I have tried grouping, ungrouping. I have tried it on type, on type changed to outlines, on simple rectangles. Without success.
When I try to use the free transform tool and hover over a corner of the bounding box, I get either a double-headed corner arrow, a rotation arrow, or a move arrow. Using the first two, dragging the point and then holding down the control/command key results only in a scaling of the object.
Should I restart? Should I re-install? What should I do?
    Best,
    Fielden

  • Free transform tool is not working

Hi, I'm getting this error every time I try to use the free transform tool, the window doesn't show all the options, the white space where you manipulate the vector has a very low quality image and won't let me move anything. I've tried with diferent objects, files, color profiles and I keep getting the same error, I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro retina display and Illustrator CC.
Any idea of how to fix it?

Sorry, you are right, it is the Free Distort window, here's a comparrison of how it looks like in CS6 and what I'm getting in CC.
    Thank you.

  • Free transform tool sticks on rotate (InD CS6)

    Hi folks,
Using InDesign CS6 (OS X 10.8.4), noticed a weird bug--when using the Free Transform tool on an object, after applying any transformation, the cursor swtiches to the "rotate" icon and won't let me deselect the object. I have to switch to another tool to get out of it. This happens whether I'm using my Wacom tablet, a mouse, or the trackpad.
Anyone else having this issue? Suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thanks, tried that, I have the most recent driver.

  • CS3 Illustrator and Free Transform Tool

I have a problem with the function Free Transform Tool in Illustrator to OS X. After clicking on the icon Free Transform Tool object can become distorted. I got command key, I'm with the cursor in the corner, but does not work. Tried the instructions here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07 d0100196cbc5f-646d.html, but it also does not work. By someone he did not know where could be the problem? Thanks a lot.

Use Effect>3D>Rotate to rotate the PNG into a perspective plane. It is not as accurate as the distortion mesh method, but it might work for you.
Alternatively, you can use the distortion mesh method and edit the mesh with the mesh tool directly. It is tedious because you'll have o move the anchor points and direction points separately (The free transform tool does this for you in one step).
A third option is to download the 30-day free trial of AICS4. You can make the distortion then open the file in CS3.
I don't have CS4 either and I am forced to keep 2 versions of Illustrator on my machine because of this bug.
Adobe should not force users to upgrade, just to get a bug fix.

  • Photoshop crashes when using Free Transform Tool

    Hello All Forum Members,
Recently Photoshop CS6 crashes when I attempt to use the Free Transform Tool through the shortcut (Ctrl+T).
It also crashes very often when using any of the free transform/transform tools via the menu as well, though not as often as the previous listed situation.
This experience only occurred recently - for all the time I have been using CS6, this has never happened.
I have read another thread similar to this, though I don't think the cause of the problem is the same as this was only a recent experience.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Curt Y,
Thank you for the quick reply!
By immediately, do you mean when the loading or when the actual interface has finished loading?
I have tried both, but neither seems to have worked.
Is there a menu or someplace else I can reset preferences?
    Many thanks!!!

  • InDesign 6 for Windows Free Transform tool is missing from Tools Panel

IIn my InDesign CS6, the Free Transform tool is absent from the Tools Panel.
How do I find it and place it on the panel?

It's in the same grouping as the Rotate, Shear or Scale tool. Click and hold on the tool (notice the little arrow in lower right corner?) to expose the whole group, or press E with no text cursor active.

  • Why the Text disappears when I rotate it using Free Transform Tool?

    Hi,
My Text is visible before rotating it to verticle position using Free Transform Tool. But when once it is rotated to verticle position the text disappears from the Stage. And it is not an animated Text as well? What is the problem?
    Thanks.

If the textfield is manually placed on the stage, you should be able to select the textfield and click the button for Embedding that is in the Properties panel.
