Set BIOS Ram from 1333 to 1600 = BSOD

Ram - CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
The ram can be set to extreme mode (1600) through the BIOS.  Acording to the board manual it can handle it.  The BIOS is even set up for it.  For some reason every time I set it to this I get BSOD on boot up.  Even if it does boot up it starts making noises out of the sounds card and then BSOD.
How do I get this ram to run at 1600?  What am i doing wrong?
I have already disabled Spread Spectrum
Thanks
Pete

Well, first off, if this is the RAM I believe it is, it is for Dual Channel systems, & not the best choice for a an X58 Triple Channel mainboard. Leave Spread Spectrum disabled. Adjust RAM manually in the BIOS, forget XMP & set it to disabled. Set RAM to Link, adjust timings to 9 9 9 24 tRFC 88, Memory Ratio 6, Uncore Ratio 12, & DRAM V. to 1.65v's. If this works, you might start reducing that RAM V. down until it destabilizes & then set it up a notch above that. This is presuming your bclk is at 133 & you are using the black two dimm slots closest to the CPU.

    Problem:
    When I  OC the rams from 1333 to1600 in BIOS, I am unable to complete a full restart of the computer when I am in windows.  Once I hit the restart button, the computer would shut down, and then be idle instead of normally booting up.  I would have to then manually push the restart button on my front case in order for the computer to come out of idle to start windows.  (Idle as in the fans are still spinning, computer is still on, black screen.)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    It is actually not correct, that the BIOS automatically sets the Command Rate to "1T" instead of "2T".  You might wanna report this issue to MSI Technical Support:

    my i5 was working @ 0Mhz !!!
    fixed by downgrading bios
    i'm wondering... should be number like here?
    is anybody can help me? how to make RAM working @1600 and more?

    Remove and re-seat all of the components outside of the case on a non-conductive surface. While the cpu is removed, inspect the cpu socket for any bent or mis aligned pins.
    Perform a full cmos clear and re-test  with only a single stick of ram in DIMM 2, cpu, cooler and psu.
    ...now my pc is in non stop restart... lol. all i wanted its only make ram 1600.
    done.  i switched off oc genie and change settings in "standrd" mode. all 4 sticks of ram are working together.
    thank you for help.

    Which is the best company and is it necessary to buy it from the Apple store.

    Let's clear the air here between fact and fiction.
    Brand of RAM has little if anything to do with its quality.
    A reliable vendor is more important that brand of RAM.
    Installing faster rated RAM than required for your computer doesn't result in a faster computer. The RAM still runs at the speed of the system's memory bus.
    Installing slower rated RAM than required for your computer will make the computer run slower.
    Using faster rated RAM is a tricky business. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not work. This may be due to other factors related to your computer's memory bus speed and clock speed as well as other characteristics of the RAM such as CAS Latency (CL.)
    The reliable thing to do is use RAM that meets the specifications set for your computer. That information is found in either the user manual or the system specs.

    I would opt for one 8 GB stick so you would have 10 GB. total. This says really no practical advantage in dual channel memory

    I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
    According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
    Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
    I want to increase the ram in both computers.
    So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

    Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
    Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,

  • Setting Bios Settings via WMI

    I wrote a script to change the Ownership Tag on the laptops, desktops, and workstations we have deployed at our site. Sadly it is kind of a mish-mash of models (8470p, 8560p, 8560w, Z420, Z600, ML 110, ML 350, 6000 Pro, 8200 Elite, and several others...a mish-mash). All of the laptops are running Windows 8.1 and all the desktops/workstations are running Windows Server 2012 R2. All the PCs are on a domain, and although I am not a domain admin, I am specifically set as a local admin on all PCs. I am having two issues: 1. I can set the Ownership Tag on my laptop both locally and remotely regardless of what I enter for a BIOS Setup password. The F10 Setup password IS SET on my laptop, and I get prompted for it when I press F10 during the POST. I don't know if it matters, but my laptop's BIOS version is 68ICF Ver. F.50. 2. My script does not work locally or remotely on a z420 (BIOS Ver J61 v03.85) running Server 2012 r2 even when I know I am using the right password. It consistently returns error code 6 (Access Denied). If I remove the BIOS setup password it will work both locally and remotely. I know Windows Firewall is configured to allow remote WMI. Here is my script:If Wscript.Arguments.Count = 2 Then
    strComputer = Wscript.Arguments.Item(0)
    strOwnerTag = Wscript.Arguments.Item(1)
    ' Get BIOS password from user
    Set oPwdCtl = CreateObject("hpPwdCtl.PasswordEdit")
    oPwdCtl.GetPassword _
    "Enter the Computer Setup Password:", strPassword
    Set objSWbemLocator = CreateObject _
    ("WbemScripting.SWbemLocator")
    Set objWMIService = objSWbemLocator.ConnectServer _
    (strComputer, "root\HP\InstrumentedBIOS")
    Set colItems = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
    ("SELECT * FROM HPBIOS_BIOSString", , 48)
    For Each objItem In colItems
    ' strResultMsg = strResultMsg & objItem.Name & _
    ' " : " & objItem.Value & vbCrLf
    If InStr(1, objItem.Name, "Owner") Then
    strName = objItem.Name
    End If
    Next
    ' Obtain an instance of the the class using
    ' a key property value.
    Set objShare = objWMIService.Get _
    ("HPBIOS_BIOSSettingInterface.InstanceName='ACPI\PNP0C14\0_0'")
    ' Obtain an InParameters object specific to the method.
    Set objInParam = _
    objShare.Methods_("SetBIOSSetting").InParameters.SpawnInstance_()
    ' Add the input parameters.
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("Name") = strName
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("Password") = strPassword
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("Value") = strOwnerTag
    ' Execute the method and obtain the return status.
    ' The OutParameters object in objOutParams
    ' is created by the provider.
    Set objOutParams = objWMIService.ExecMethod _
    ("HPBIOS_BIOSSettingInterface.InstanceName='ACPI\PNP0C14\0_0'", _
    "SetBIOSSetting", objInParam)
    ' List OutParams
    strResultMsg = strResultMsg & vbCrLf & "Result: " & _
    objOutParams.Return
    Wscript.Echo strResultMsg
    Else
    'Instruct on the proper use of the script
    Wscript.Echo "Target Hostname and/or Ownership Tag missing!" _
    & vbCrLf & "Usage: SetAssetTag <hostname> <asset tag>"
    End If   So, how do I get this to work on a Z420 running Server 2012 R2 when there is a password set, and NOT work on my laptop when an incorrect password is entered? What have I missed? EDIT:I should note that on some models the Ownership Tag is named "Enter Ownership Tag" while on other models it is simply "Ownership Tag". I suspect there are other variations, and that is why I search for "owner". I am aware that I can use the WQL LIKE operator (eg, SELECT * FROM HPBIOS_BIOSString WHERE name LIKE '%owner%') to find the tag but I was lazy and busy and not thinking...I'll likely edit it later. ____________________________________________________Just to help some others out who may find this thread later: To enable Remote WMI in Windows firewall, you can use this command from a DOS promptnetsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)" new enable=yes  If you have admin rights on a remote PC, you can use WINRS to run the command on the remote PC (this is a snippet of VB code)"winrs -r:" & strComputer & " netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=" & chr(34) & "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)" & chr(34) & " new enable=yes" For security reasosn you may want to disable Remote WMI when you are done working with the remote machine, so make sure to run that command again but with "enable=no".  Some very helpful tools for working with the HPBIOS WMI stuff are:WMI Explorer 2.0 (https://wmie.codeplex.com/)WMI Code Creator (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8572)HP Client Management InterfaceTechnical White Paper (http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/downloads/cmi_whitepaper.pdf) And if you want a nice easy GUI editor for playing with code that is easily transferable to VBScript, I personally like Excel VBA. Just make sure to add a reference to the Microsoft WMI Scripting Library (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee156554.aspx).

    Ok, so I solved problem number 2. It turns out that the Z420 will not accept passwords encoded as keyboard scancodes. Instead they accept passwords encoded as UTF-16. So, if your setup password is abc123, the scancode is "<kbd/>1E302E020304". the utf-16 version of that is...wait for it...."<utf-16/>abc123" tada!! So since I have a mess of models, I'll need to modify my code to either ask the user to re-enter the password so it can be encoded as a scancode, or I can write a function that will convert the utf password that was entered to scancodes. I have not figured out how to pass a string to the hpPwdCtrl object and have it return a value. The documentation on the hpPwdCtl.PasswordEdit object is sketchy or nonexistant, but here's what I've figured out so far: 1. Using early bindingDim oPwdCtl As New hpPwdCtl.PasswordEditstrPassword = oPwdCtl.GetPassword("Enter the Setup Password:") 'keyboard scancode encoded passwordstrUTFPassword = oPwdCtl.GetPasswordAsUnicode(varLocale, "Enter the Setup Password:") I have no clue what varLocale does, but you must use an empty variable there. (varLocale was just my name for it...call your variable whatever you want, but make sure its empty.) 2. Using late bindingSet oPwdCtl = CreateObject("hpPwdCtl.PasswordEdit")oPwdCtl.GetPassword "Enter the Setup Password:", strPasswordoPwdCtl.GetPasswordAsUnicode varLocale, "Enter the Setup Password:", strUTFPassword Again you must have the empty variable for the unicode method. There is a method named GetPasswordAsScanCode but I can't get it to work with either early or late binding. I always get "The Remote Procedure Call Failed".

  • How do you properly set the RAM timings?

    In an effort to solve random crashes on my pc I adjusted the RAM timings. I managed to stop the crashes, but I really didn't know what I was doing.
    Recently I was playing with the cpu overclock options and I started crashing again, even after I was back to normal cpu settings. I managed to get it running stable again by adjusting the RAM timings, but again it was by trial and error.
    I have read a lot of forums where people who have upgraded to a GF4 on several different systems have been plagued with crashes similar to mine. Is it possible that something is out of sync between the video, cpu, and ram? Is there anything that can be adjusted on the video card? Just a thought.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Adding Ram from my Macbook Pro

    I just recently purchased a 27" iMac i5 2.8 Quad-core with 4 gb of ram. I do a lot of photo editing in lightroom/photoshop and would eventually like to buy some more ram to bring my total to 8, 12, or 16 gb. With the holidays though I just don't have the spare cash, but I do have spare 2x1 gb sticks of ram from upgrading my (late 08) macbook pro. The only catch is the ram is only 1067 MHz DDR3, slightly slower than the 1333 MHz DDR 3 already installed in my iMac .
    My question is this, will I be better off staying at 4 gb of 1333 MHz DDR 3, or is adding 2x1 gb sticks of 1067 MHz DDR 3 ram an okay idea?
    Thanks in advance for the help,

  • Is it possible to set BIOS settings over a command line?

    Hi,
    is there a possibility to set Toshiba BIOS settings over a command line tool?
    We have hundreds of Toshiba Notebooks and would like to activate Wake On Lan.
    I know there is hwsetup, but as far as I know this GUI doesn't accept parameters...
    We would like to propagate new settings over a script.
    Any solution for this ?
    Thanx

    > is there a possibility to set Toshiba BIOS settings over a command line tool?
    Something like that is not known to me and I doubt this could be possible.
    As you said there is an preinstalled Toshiba HWSetup tool which can be used to change some certain BIOS settings. But this is only one way to change the BIOS settings from the Windows OS.

  • P35 Neo-FI: after flashing bios, Win XP won't start (BSOD)

    Hello board,
    I was a moron and did a bios upgrade from Windows, using Live Update 4. The flash seemed to finish normally. However, after the flash my Windows XP install wouldn't start, resulting in a blue screen of death ("Stop: 0x0000007E" etc). I used the rescue floppy to flash back to the (presumably) original bios version, with no change, still BSOD. I have been able to flash the bios again by using a bootable USB stick. (I couldn't use the Forum Flasher from my old notebook, so I used MSI's guide to creating a USB flash stick.)
    The version I flashed back to from the rescue floppy is 1.A0 (1.10). I'm not sure what the newer(?) version Live Update offered me was. I was confused with the version numbers and looked for a newer version manually. I ended up flashing to 1.19, downloaded from MSI's server (http://download1.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/7360v19.zip), which is what I have now. Still same the problem. I've cleared up the CMOS several times, after most of these flashes (but not all).
    Starting a fresh XP install results in the same BSOD after first reboot (after copying files to the disk). I also booted up (in 1.A0/1.10) an old Linux Ubuntu Live CD, which gave this warning:
    "Warning! Your PnP BIOS caused a fatal error. Attempting to continue. You may need to reboot with the "nobiospnp" option to operate stably. Check your vendor for an updated BIOS. get_dev_node: unexpected status 0x28"
    I'd be grateful to any suggestions!
    The system in question: P35 Neo-FI, Core 2 Duo E4500, 2 * 1 GB Kingston DDR2 800, MSI Radeon HD 4670, Samsung 1614N IDE hard disk, an LG DVD drive, Corsair CX400 PSU.

    make sure you change the settings for ide/sata settings in bios.

  • E31 - Unable to set Bios values through WMI

    Dear All,
    I am trying to set Bios values on E31 through a VB Script using WMI in our lab. It is working on all the machines except one. It does not return an error while setting the value or saving it. But when I manually enter Setup, the values would not be set. No error is set in Event viewer.
    Manually modifying the value works.
    Machine type: E31 (2552CS4)
    Bios Version: 9SKT61AUS
    Values trying to set:
    Select Active Video=IGD
    Total Graphics Memory=128MB
    Multi-Monitor Support=Enabled
    Core Multi-Processing=Enabled
    etc.
    Command executed:
        ObjItem.SetBiosSetting Select Active Video,IGD;
        ObjItem.SetBiosSetting Multi-Monitor Support,Enabled;
        ObjItem.SetBiosSetting Core Multi-Processing,Enabled;
    Can anyone tell me what could be wrong with the machine. How it can be corrected.
    Thanks in advance.
    -Uttam

    Are those values (WMI commands) actually changing anything from what the defaults are?
    It's odd that you've seen it work correctly on other E31 systems but fail on only this one.  Is there something in the configuration that's unique to this system as compared to the other E31 systems that passed with no issue?
    In the failing scenario, which value(s) are not getting set correctly?
