Set Default application

Hello to the mac family.
As always I have a small problem that I am sure someone can help me with.
I am using a G-5 with Safari. I recently added Acrobat Professional to my computer.
I deleted the free reader. Now when I go to a website that has a pdf I have to select "Professional".
I am pretty sure there must be a way to make this my default reader for pdfs. I have looked around the Safari preffs and in the forum but can't find it. I still am kinda missing my 9.2 but not as much as I thought I would.
Thanks in advance and as always I really appreciate the help.........Jim

This is the Intel iMac forum, so you might want to post your question in either the G5 forum:

or, better yet, in the Safari forum:

  • Set default application for *all* users

Hello people, my 1st post here, so forgive me for possible imprecisions, ambiguity, inappropriateness....
When I search how to set/change the default app for opening some type of file I always find the answer "through the getinfo". But doing that, I only change the default application for the current user.
I want to do that for all users of my mac, without repeating the getinfo process for each of them.
Is there any adminstrative tools for doing that?
    Thank you.

You could download and install RCDefaultApp 2.1 for all users: check the Read Me and then test it on something to see if it accomplishes what you want.

  • Setting default application

when I'm trying to open up a document or something it says something like "There is no default application specified to open the document (name of document)" . How do you set a default application and what should I set it to?
I have an iMac version 10.4.8

Tell me some of the names of these programs. What are the 3 letter suffixes (after the .)?
Examples: .sit opens with Stuffit Expander, .xls = Excel, .mov = Quicktime Player etc.
Most games run by themselves after you've installed them
Are these Mac games you've downloaded? Files ending .exe are Windows programs & require Windows XP SP2 to be installed through Bootcamp.

  • Setting default application (yes, i've seen previous threads on this topic)

This is a continuation of the thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4613912
which has been archived, and so could not be continued.
The problem with assigning default applications to open given file types persisted on my machine even after i had re-installed the Tiger recently.
But i think i might have an idea now what is going on: apparenly the file
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
is getting erased from time to time all by itself.
It is only left now to figure out why this happens, and how to fix it.

I checked the disc with Disc Utility and emptied caches with Maintenance.app.
    Then i removed the files
    com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore
    om.apple.LaunchServices.plist
(though i noticed that com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore regenerated after about 5 seconds).
    Then i rebooted.
Then i went to a directory with 3 PDF files, two of which were assigned to Preview, and 1 to Adobe Reader (do not know why).
I set PDFView as the default application for one of the files assigned to Preview, and clicked Change All.
The icon of this file changed to the icon of PDFView, but the other two icons stayed the same.
Nevertheless, the default application of the other file assigned to Preview changed to PDFView, but the default application of the third file remained Adobe Reader.
I think this behaviour is a bug.
Anyway, i will try to keep an eye on these files, and will make a post once they change there default applications by themselves.

  • Set "default application language" in 11i

i want to know if there is a way to set the default application language for some users from the table level.
i know i can set it up from the preferences. but my requirement is to do a mass update of 5000 users.
the only thing i updated was the wf_local_roles table but that did not do anything.
i think i am missing some more tables.
    any help would be appreciated.

  • Setting default application to open .doc files

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the Info box. I can't seem to set all my .doc files to open with Word 2004. I have repeatedly opened an Info box on several different .doc files, and set them to Open With: Word 2004, and then had it Change All... But it never sticks, it always defaults back to Word 2008. I have both Word 2004 and Word 2008 installed. Maybe they don't play nice with each other. Or maybe they are messing with OS X 10.4. Any thoughts?
    thanks.

Oh. Great discovery & thanks for the feedback.
UPDATE: I changed one .doc file to open with Word '04, and bingo it did! I tried it again with another file, it worked too. So it works if I use the Info box and change only one file at a time, but not when I Change All. hmmmm....
    Oh I deduce...
When you change an individual file, X is inserting a pointer to the application to start. When you do a change all, X is changing the default application to start. X is not hardcoding the default to given application, but setting the default to an application id. In turn, the application id then maps to an application. When you install a later version of the application the application id gets mapped to the new application.
Interestingly, I rarely use the global change. I change only one program at a time. I was confused because I had not worked with multiple version of the same program. I use multiple programs to edit and view HTML.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to set default application to open files

    Hello,
Whenever I try to set a default application for a file type (an avi for example) by right-clicking the file in Nautilus and choosing Open with Other Application, I can select the application (in this case VLC), check the Remember this Application checkbox  and click Open, I always get the below message:
Could not set application as the default: Can't create user application configuration folder /root/.local/share/applications: Permission denied
I'm not logged in as root (confirmed with "whoami") so I'm not sure why it's trying to access the root home folder.
I'm thinking this is simply a misconfigured path statement (forgive the Windows terminology) but I'm not sure where to start looking.  Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply ngoonee!
The situation has already changed a bit.  Still being in Windows mode, I decided to try a reboot.  After rebooting I no longer get the error I was before (I wonder if it had something to do with logging in initially as root then su'ing to my user account) but the association with vlc just isn't sticking.
I noticed though that now when I right-click on a video file I get the option to "Open with Movie Player" as well as "Open with VLC media player" (which does do what it's supposed to), which wasn't there before.  For grins I went and set the preferred multimedia app to VLC through System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, but that didn't help.
Is there a place these preferences are stored that I might take a peek at?

  • Setting default application to none

I would like to change a default application (e.g. Safari) to <none>. I don’t think I should have listed Safari as the default application. How do I do this?

    Dear Allan,
I opened the Internet Plugins folder in Library. Then I double-clicked on items such as Flash Player.plugin. When I got the message about ’no default application specified to open ____” I thought I had to look for one. Therefore, Flash Player Enabler. plugin opens in Safari and Flash Player.plugin opens in Text Edit. RealPlayer plugin and Real Player Plugin.xpt do not open, are not folders, and there is an arrow on the left bottom of the document. I guess I shouldn’t have opened these files. I don’t think I can get them to open in <none> any more since None is not available at Open With . . .

  • Windows 8, set default application for example adobe reader, customize the start screen

I have two questions, Im going to deploy Windows 8 to our company, but have 2 big issues.
    1) I need to customize the start screen, but cant find anywhere in the gpo´s? How can I do this without sysprepping etc (deploying with SCCM2012 SP1)
    2) I need to set the default programs for adobe reader, mspaint etc, how can I do this? It doesnt work with the GPP and folder options, anyone have done this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Thanks for posting your question in the forum. First of all, if you want to deploy customized Windows 8 Start Screen for domain users, I suggest we could refer to the following similar threads
    and article.

Regarding the second question, since you want to set the default programs via Group Policy but it didn’t work. Would you please let me know how did you configure the setting? Please refer to
the following steps to configure the GPO setting.
To create a new Open With preference item
    Open the
Group Policy Management Console. Right-click the Group Policy object (GPO) that should contain the new preference item, and then click
    Edit.
    In the console tree under
User Configuration, expand the Preferences folder, and then expand the
    Control Panel Settings folder.
    Right-click the
Folder Options node, point to New, and select
    Open With.
    In the
New Open With Properties dialog box, select an Action for  Group Policy to perform.
Enter Open With settings for Group Policy to configure or remove.
    Click the
Common tab, configure any options, and then type your comments in the
    Description box.
    Click
OK. The new preference item appears in the details pane.
For details, please refer to the following article.
    Configure an Open With Item
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732272.aspx
In addition, I suggest we could collect the following information to narrow down the cause of the issue.
    GPMC.log
    ==================
    a. On domain controller, click Start ->Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console.
    b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic computer and user account (please place appropriately). (Choose computer and select
the proper user in the wizard)
    c. Right click
the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML file.
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting Default applications for file types

I recently got NeoOffice for my mac and im trying to set file types to open automatically instead of CTRL clicking then open with then the program. Ive had trouble with that to recieving wrong types of files from people on aim and then having to open it with iphoto
    please help

I'm using 10.4.9 and there is no "Change All"-Option. There is always a checkbox "Always Open With", but it is only related to the single selected file. On a second Mac (same OS version), there is the same behavior.
    Bug???

  • Setting default applications?

I have a bunch of AVIs that won't play in quicktime, and I downloaded VLC player to play them. It's annoying having to open VLC every time and open up each file through VLC. Can I change the default program for a certain file like you could in windows?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Control-mouse click (or right mouse click on a two button mouse) the said document, and select Open With -> Other...
Pick VLC and check off "Always Open With", and documents of that suffix will always open with VLC.

  • How to set my default application...not working

My company has nearly all adobe applications installed from PageMaker 6.5 through InDesign 5.5. We use them all frequently. I'm trying to set my defaults on the Mac Pros and it is not working.
    Specs if Needed:
    OSX 10.6.8
    Model Identifier:          MacPro5,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          4
      Memory:          6 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MP51.007F.B01
    +BootCamp dual boot Windows 7
We proof out all files in the version that it comes to us. Our customers are on different versions than the most current, and it's driving us crazy that we can't set the defaults for
    each Adobe application. For Instance,
    We want for Defaults:
    Photoshop = CS4
    InDesign = CS4
    Illustrator = CS5
    etc.
The Finder will not allow us to make the change to open all of a certain file type in the version we want by default. We also use a third party application that allows us to "double
click" InDesign files and open them in the correct version. This saves valuable navigation time and because of the OS's problem with using the correct icons, it also saves us time
dealing with the "Untitled" document when we accidentally convert by opening in the wrong application by mistake. We have gone through Onyx utilities and massive permissions
troubleshooting to no avail. Does anyone know how to set the default for ALL files of a type for Adobe Apps? This has been thoroughly tested and is not working on 10 plus
machines, and only effects Adobe apps.
    Any Ideas?

I think you miss understand the question. There is a problem with OSX 10.6 and Adobe Apps. 10.5 ok, not sure about 10.7 because of all of the other Adobe problems we downgraded the test machine that we used for the upgrade. There is no way that I have found to make the files “Double-Clickable” through assigning a default application of files with Adobe extensions. We already have an app. that we use and it worked fine until 10.6. I can’t just approve a division-wide purchase of software for a bug that may be solvable by other means (by the way supposed cost of the licensing Soxy is deceiving at $20. Not for us. For companies it’s $20 per platform & also for each time Adobe updates. When we swap out hardware, we have to pay $40 again . Their pricing is absurd). $40 x a couple hundred machines every 18 months or so, uugh! The ten or so I’m working with are just the ones in my immediate department.
I know you have good intentions with your reply and I appreciate it, however I’m looking to solve the problem, not put a band-aid on it. If the problem is by design so Rorohiko can hold companies hostage, then I guess we’ll just have to deal with the few extra clicks it takes to figure out which version we’re in need of, and dragging to the launch bar.
Thanks very much for your reply,
    Seth

  • How to set a default application?

    Hi there,
Does anyone know how to set one application to be the default (when opening files) over another application?
For example: I have both Acrobat 7 and Acrobat 8 installed on my machine. When I installed Acrobat 8, it automatically made itself the default program for all things related to PDFs. This is annoying as I much prefer to open my PDFs in Acrobat 7.
My work around is to control/click/open with - 7, but sometimes I forget. What I want is to set Acrobat 7 as the default rather than Acrobat 8.
    I need both programs, so I don't want to simply un-install 8.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers.

    Thank you Roger!
I had looked in the information window but (for some reason) didn't see the "Open With" option.
    Cheers...
