Set Default BookMarks & Home Page

I am using CentOS-6.4 and FireFox 24.
Upon setup of a PC, I'd like to run a command line script which sets default bookmarks and a default home page for all current and future users. There may or may not be an existing profile when the script is run. Is this possible?

You can initialize the bookmarks via a bookmarks.html file placed in defaults\profile (needs to be created), but AFAIK then there is no way to merge new bookmarks with existing bookmarks via the command line or otherwise apart from importing an HTML file in the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks ).

• How do I get new pages in new tabs to automatically go the same setting as my home page? Google is my home page, and I want the opening in new tabs to default to Google also.

Whenever I open a new tab, I want the new page to open to the same setting as my Home Page (in my case, Google). Instead it takes me to Bing. Even my Home Page reverts to Bing after I've set it to Google.

The default New Tab in Firefox is a blank page and there is no built-in option to change that.

• How do I set a "normal" home-page in Firefox for Android? (instead of the "awesome screen")

How do I set a "normal" home-page in Firefox for Android? I don't want the homepage to be the "awesome screen" (which I personally don't find to be very awesome - way too much going on in one page for a small smartphone screen).
I just want a regular home page that I can set myself. For example, in Firefox for my personal laptop, I've set my homepage Google.com. In Firefox on my work computer, I've set my homepage to our company intranet login. I really prefer and need this flexibility in setting my home page.
In Firefox for Android, if I go into Settings/Customize/Homepage , the only options I see for changing the home page is to de-select certain items on the "awesome screen". There's no option to set a URL address for a normal homepage. If I de-select/hide all the items on the awesome screen, I simply get a blank home page (no web page, just a prompt telling me to enter a URL address).
The other major browsers for Android allow me to set a "normal" home page. Firefox is my favorite browser for my laptop. I wish I could get it to work normally for Android. :( :( :(

hello betsy, at the moment such a feature is not implemented in firefox, but as a workaround you can add a bookmark to a site to the homescreen of your phone, which should have the same effect: Use bookmarks on Firefox for Android to keep track of your favorite websites

• Can I set up a home page in safari

How can I set up a home page in Safari on the iPad

There isn't a home page capability in Safari but you can add an icon of a page URL to the Home screen. Touching this icon will start Safari and point it to that URL.

• When I set up multiple home pages, I get two NEW pages when I click "home"

Firefox 19.0.2 on XP
I have always had firefox set up to open two page, so my home page setting reads
https://www.google.com|https://www.google.com
When I open Firefox, I get two tabs, both on Google. If I opened a 3rd tab I got a blank page. Just what I wanted.
Now, suddenly - when I open Firefox, I get my two home pages, but if I'm in Page 0 and click HOME, I get TWO MORE tabs open to my home page (for a total of 4 pages).
I read online to replace the pipe with %7C but that causes a -27 Service error.
Something changed inside FF in the latest updates ... how do I get the expected behavior back?

I have had the same original problem here as dbdataplus12 for a while now concerning having multiple tabs set as home page.
For my use, I have 4 tabs set up as home pages - each tab being set to a different web address, as I always use all 4 websites whenever I start any browsing sessions.
I had given up hope of trying to find an answer to resolve it or at least find out why it happens.
If it's just because it's the way FF works then so be it, and I'm stuck with FF doing something that, as far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't really be doing that way - but I'll have to put up with it anyway ;)
But having come across these replies to dbdataplus12 query it's prompted me to have to post here.
I can see why dbdataplus12 basically gave up on trying to get a clear answer to his query. "That said, I'm bored with this entire conversation - and now I will do what true Americans now do in cases like this - I will lower my expectations. "
So maybe I can explain better what I see as my problem with multiple home pages, what is happening within FF and why I think that it shouldn't be doing things that way, and what I think FF should be doing instead.
If it turns out that I'm just expecting too much from FF or the people who program FF, or maybe my expectations are too high to have something so obvious be able to be done - that just doesn't happen in FF, or maybe just plain wrong of me to expect certain things from a tool such as FF - then so be it ;)
As dbdataplus12 said " ... if I set up my home page option with TWO home pages (google | yahoo) then when I open FF I get two tabs with their respective pages loaded."
When I startup FF I get my 4 tabs opened to their respective web addresses. So far so good :)
I then use those 4 tabs during my session, and again so far so good ;)
The problem then happens when I wish to go to my home pages again.
On clicking the Home button, a new set of 4 tabs open up, each going to their respective web address as they are supposed to.
Why aren't the original, existing tabs used to go to the home pages?
I would have thought that it was obvious that when I click on the Home page button that the 4 tabs that are open go to the home pages.
If I had closed one or more tabs then I would expect FF to open new tabs as required, and use those tabs to go to the relevant home pages.
If I had opened new tabs myself during my session to visit other web addresses, I would expect that the first tabs be used to go to the Home pages - any other tabs that may be open would stay on their relevant pages.
That's what I would expect to happen.
Not for FF to just open up 4 new tabs.
As I say, to me, it's just plain obvious.
The first tabs onscreen should be used to open up any Home pages set up, so that whenever the Home page button is pressed those tabs are used.
And for FF to open up additional tabs, if tabs had been closed and are needed to enable all the home pages to be shown.
As I say, to me, it's just plain obvious.
So, if it's just that FF doesn't work that way - then so be it. I'll accept that as the answer and have to put up with new tabs opening every time I press Home ;)
But maybe someone, somewhere, could think about altering FF so that it uses existing tabs etc instead of just opening new ones. Maybe you could have a setting in the preferences to switch the option on or off to reuse tabs whenever the Home button is pressed.
Just a really, obvious idea ;)
Thanks for reading - and hopefully replying.
And hopefully taking the idea onboard ;)

• How can I set a custom Home Page while ALSO having a New Tab be the default Mozilla Page?

Why is the "home Page" = to a New Tab page? Why are they linked. I want my.yahoo.com to be my Home Page (currently set properly) but my New Tab page seems to be set to "Conduit" and has a search bar. I have no idea where that came from or how it got set that way. I want to have my current Home Page but make any New Tabs be the Mozilla Default Page with a Google search bar. Is that possible? I am running on Windows XP.

• After closing firefox, the next time I open it my homepage has gone back to the default homepage and not the one I tried to set as my home page.

I've tried multiple times to set my home page to Yahoo.com
It works as long as I have Firefox open, but if I close Firefox and then re-open it, the home page has reverted back to the default home page, not the one I set.
This has not happened before updating to 3.6.10.

There are several possible reasons for it being reset, for details see Preferences are not saved.

• How can I set the opening home page of FIrefox to display the current bookmarks. This used to work with bookmarks.html but I understand this file is no longer current.

I wish to display my current bookmarks as my opening home page in Firefox. I do not wish to use the Bookmarks sidebar instead. It used to work to open with bookmarks.html, which was and still is stored in my Firefox profile. However, I understand this file is no longer kept current but is only retained for legacy/compatibility reasons, and that the current bookmarks info is now stored in places.sqlite, etc. Is there a way with the new versions of Firefox to display as a full opening webpage the assuredly current bookmarks? Thank you

Hi Jaime,
Are you saying, you are getting junk characters in the email attachment? Then pls check the following. Since you want to send Japanese fonts, please pass language 'J' in both  objpack-obj_langu = '3' & doc_chng-obj_langu  = '3' instead of '3' please replace it with 'J'.
Another thing which you may have to check is the SCOT device type. As I understand from my basis colleague, this may also affect your attachment fonts since the emails are sent through SCOT. Go to transaction SCOT-> Settings-> Device types for format conversion. Check whether wrong device type is defined for Japanese there. Hope this helps

• Firefox will not open saved desktop bookmarks, it always defaults to home page, why is that?

I like to launch Firefox by clicking on desktop shortcuts I have saved (bank, Netflix, Gmail, Amazon, Yahoo, eBay, etc...). With Firefox 29 any desktop shortcut now opens to my home page, Google. If I choose open to a blank page in the options, then all of my shortcuts open to a blank page.
In Firefox 28 all of desktop shortcuts worked just fine. I like being able to start Firefox on a specific page. Now it looks like I can only open to my home page or a blank page. This is terrible!!! I have tried creating new desktop shortcuts from Firefox 29 and I get this same results. Really terrible.
I can deal with the interface (which I really do not like now) but this simple lose of how I like to start Firefox is going to drive me away. Please fix or explain to me how I can launch Firefox from a shortcut and have it open that web page. Many thanks!

Sorry didn't work. I am using MacOS 10.6. New shortcuts created in FF29 have the same problem. If FF29 is not open, clicking on the shortcut opens FF to my default home page, never to the shortcut URL I clicked. For example, clicking an Amazon.com shortcut I just dragged to the desktop, then quitting FF29 and clicking the shortcut launches FF29 to my Google home page. If I change my default browser to Safari all of my desktop shortcuts open Safari to the right page. Chrome had the same problem but I couldn't stand Chrome so I don't care. This is definitely a FF29 problem.
I am really attached to FF in general and this is not a deal breaker, just a huge annoyance. Again, thanks for any help.

• How do I make Firefox default to home page when open new Tab?

When I open a new tab/window its blank. I have Firefox open to my home page Google, and I want the new tab/window to default open to that if I haven't chosen a web site to go to in the new Tab/window.
Is there a way to make Firefox default to the Google page when I open a new Tab/window and dont specify a web site to open to ?
I am using XP PRO x64 with firefox 4.0 and everything else works fine... my default home page is the Google search page.

Install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
After install and re-starting Firefox, go to Add-ons > Extensions, click Options next to New TabURL, set the options and/or enter the URL you want when you open a new tab, click Save.

Does not relate to your question, but...
You have multiple old Java Console extensions that Java did not clean-up during updates. You need Java Console only if you do Java programming/development or debug Java applets on web pages. You can see them in Add-ons > Extensions, but you can not remove them from there. Removing them will not affect the functioning of Java on websites. You can manually remove them, if you do not do Java development work to avoid future, possible problems/conflicts:

• I am trying to set Firefox as home page-browser. Please advise?

Words in the "Question" window above pretty much say it all; earlier this afternoon 10/10/2014 a really odd thing occurred I cannot explain clearly but it caused me to try to set Firefox browser (search engine) as home page...possibly I should have typed "Mozilla," but I do not quite know...
Detail: I should likely say that I am using W8.1 which I hate but am trying to learn.
Could someone please tell me how to go about setting FM or is it just "M?" Every article supposedly explaining the process starts out with "Open Mozilla," and truly I do not know how one does that in this new OS.
Someone tried to tell me that FM or is it just plain M is NOT a search engine browser thing. Hoping that person was wrong!
Please advise? TIA,
Omnigusted.

• Spry Tabbed Panel Defaults to home page with recordset paging

I have Spry ver. 1.6.1.  A Spry Tabbed Panel titled "Check Ride Activity Report" (Tab 6)  accesses a mysql database and shows the records in a table format.  Instead of having all the records display at once I want to limit the records displayed to a few at a time. e.g. 5 per page.   I added a recordset navigation bar and set the $maxRows_GetChkRideRecs = 5;  It works but each time the navigation bar "Next" or "Last" or "First" or "Previous" is clicked the page reloads with the default Home page Tab displayed.  The user then has to click on Tab 6  to view the new results.  The url where this can be viewed is at http://Training.reliantair.com.  Is there a way to code this tab so that Tab 6 remains the default tab once it is selected until the user selects another tab?
I want to avoid putting another  button on the page to accomplish this as shown in the spry utils samples where the user clicks to set the default tab.
Can this be done within the recordset paging code similar to how it is done on a form submit to keep the focus on the current tab?

I didn't try the cookie method suggested.  The tab method listed in spry utils does work but requires an additional button, so I came up with this solution.
In the Head of the HTML document I put this code.  It searches for the query string in the HREF when any of the record paging buttons is pressed.
<script type="text/javascript" src="SpryURLUtils.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var params = Spry.Utils.getLocationParamsAsObject();
if (location.href.indexOf("GetChkRideRecs") != -1  && location.href.indexOf("tab") == -1)
      location.href +="&tab=5#TabbedPanels1";
</script>
Then in the body of the HTML document at the bottom of the page  the tabbed panel widget is changed like this:
var TabbedPanels1 = new Spry.Widget.TabbedPanels("TabbedPanels1",{defaultTab: (params.tab ? params.tab:0)});
The first time a recordset paging link is  clicked the HREF attribute of &tab=5#TabbedPanels1 is added to the location HREF.  Subsequent clicks of any of the links do not change the HREF because the code looks for "tab" and does nothing if it is found.

• Despite setting "open my home page" in the Tools Options General Startup, Firefox insists on a blank tab.

I'm using Firefox 4.0 with TabMixPlus and AdBlock Plus on Windows XP Home, SP3. When I log in as a local administrator in Windows, new tabs open correctly and display a home page, but when my non-admin users (mother-in-law!) run Firefox, the application insists on a blank tab. It also shows a bizarre "nested" view with two sets of Windows title bars stacked at the top of the screen.
There's a weird orange "Firefox" dropdown menu atop the second one, and it's full of cool options... none of which does a thing to change this behavior.
Short of giving my mother-in-law admin privileges, how can I get Firefox to respect her GUI choices?

New tabs open by default a blank tab, so it looks that you have an extension that opens the home page instead.
You can look at one of these extensions:
* NewTabURL : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
* New Tab Homepage : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/
Quote: It also shows a bizarre "nested" view with two sets of Windows title bars stacked at the top of the screen.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
In Firefox 4 Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.
* Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See:
* Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

• Home page won't set to my home page

I set my home page to "www.yahoo.ca". When I click 'home' it goes to yahoo.ca which is what I want..But..if I close firefox and reopen, it goes to http://rogers.my.yahoo.com/?_bc=1, which is not what I set up for my home page. When I click 'tool', 'options', 'general' this always comes up http://www.rogers.com/smartkey as 'show my home page'. Doesn't matter how many time I change my home page to www.yahoo.ca it still comes up as www.rogers.com/smartkey.
I would appreciate a reply notice to this to my e-mail if possible to [email protected]

Did you try to start in Safe mode?
In Firefox 4+ versions you can use one of these to start in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
*Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
*https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
*https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
