Set Default Windows 8 Start Screen

Hello,
I'm trying to find a way to set the Start Screen with a simple command or script on every computer I image. I tried going through the GPO route but that locks the start screen completely so users cannot then add their own icons to it. We have a standard
image that comes with a Start Screen layout that we would like to modify but cannot modify the unattend.xml because it is company wide. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks.

Hi,
If you want to customize the Start Screen,we need to use MDT tool to implement this work.
We can manually customize the Start Screen, then use CopyProfile to apply the customizations to the default user profile.
Also,I would like to share the following link with you:

  • Jdeveloper - setting default window geometry under x-window

    Hi
When I run JDeveloper (9.0.4) it creates its main window (of some size) in the center of the screen. It's fine, but... I'd like to have JDeveloper create its main window of different default size and located at different position when I start it. So the problem is: JDeveloper's default window geometry is: NOW_WIDTHxNOW_HEIGTH+x_offset+y_offset and I want to change it to: NEW_WIDTHxNEW_HEIGHT+new_x_offset+new_y_offset. I run Linux with X-Window with AfterStep window manager (but the solution should be similar for any other window manager).
I tried to solve this problem the usual way: change DefaultGeometry in "database" file in AfterStep configuration but it didn't work out.
Any ideas? Maybe I have to change something in some (JDeveloper's) configuration file?
    Thanks in advance

JDeveloper remembers it's last size/position and tries to restore itself to that. The data is buried in the xml files, though I'm not sure what format.

  • Stuck on "Login window starting" screen

one night i was putting a big file, about 2-4 gb, into iphoto from my old imac and i forgot to make sure that it stayed on my external hard drive and there wasnt enough room on my main drive because they were small hard drives except for my external. iphoto said there wasnt enough room so i selected all the pics i just transfered and tried to put them back in my external but still in iphoto and then the screen dimmed a little and this message came up saying i need to restart my computer so i just turned it off because i was tired and thought i could deal with this some other time. then a week or 2 later i turned it back on and it got all the way to were it said "login window starting" and stopped about 98 percent. and i waited for a few minutes and decided to just leave it there and clean my room then i watched a movie and when it was done i checked back and it didnt move. whats wrong with it.

Hi Ian, and a warm welcome to the forums!
OSX will mess up the HD if space gets too low, Free space isn't really ours to use anymore.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't do it let us know.
You need a minimum of 10 GB free space.

  • GPO to set default Windows 7 Display scaling to 125%

We have some new Windows 7 laptops with 1080P LCD displays and it is a bit hard for the majority of the mostly older users to deal with the smaller menus and text.
We would like to set the default Display scaling to 125% so it is more readable and menus are easier to navigate and easier click on the X's for the majority of people.
A minority of users may want the 100% scaling, so we would prefer that the 125% setting is just the default a new user gets at their first login rather than an enforced setting that is automatically reapplied if the user adjusts it.
How can we use a GPO to change the default from 100% to 125% on these laptops without preventing users from changing it back if they want to?
It will be easier for us to help a small number of the users change it from 125% back to 100% than to have to help everyone else increase it from 100 to 125%.

    Hi MyGposts,
According to your description, you would like to deploy GPO which could change the default scalling to 125 without preventing users from changing it back to100%. Right?
Basded on my research, the changes can be made by using the registry values below:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontDPI] "LogPixels"=dword:00000078
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\HardwareProfiles\0000\Software\Fonts]
    "LogPixels"=dword:00000078
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\Software\Fonts]
    "LogPixels"=dword:00000078
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\Software\Fonts] "LogPixels"=dword:00000078
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontDPI] * This has
    to be deleted if
    it already exists
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "LogPixels"=dword:00000078
Note: The above given values are in Hexadecimal.
Make the changes as given above and log off and log back in to get Medium settings as mentioned in "Make
    it easier
    to read
    what's on
    your screen"
You can refer to the above changing about registry keys and test it on a computer. And then deploy the changes via GPO, for your information, please refer to the following article:

  • How do I make web shortcuts into start screen tiles that can be pushed to all users profile on a computer in Windows 8.1 enterprise?

We are trying to roll out Windows 8.1 Enterpise in our school system (K-12).
The focus of this question is how do we take an internet web based shortcut and make it into a screen tile (on the start screen) which will appear for any user's start screen that logs on to the computer?
    The details:
We came upon a great paper that's entitled "Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screens by Using Group Policy".
By applying this paper we were able to accomplish our first goal: Lock down the start screen so no user could change it. We accomplished this by using the Start Screen Layout policy setting laid out in the paper.
Our second goal: to customize the start screen is only half way met. We can set up the start screen the way we want and then export the .xml file. We are able to "reimport" the .xml file when the new user logs in. The installed programs
will appear on the Start Screen but not the internet based web shortcuts that were on the inital setup start screen.
(FYI - tried creating these tiles by running the start screen internet explorer app to the intended address and pinning them to the start screen. At this time trying to figure if there is a place to put desktop internet short cuts into a directory to make
them appear on the Start Screen).
We can see that the directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs is a place for program files to appear on the start screen. Is there a location web based shortcuts can be placed to cause them to automatically appear on the start
screen for every user as well? If not how do we accomplish getting these into tiles for every user logging in?
Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Hopefully it gets our question answered and helps others out there in the same boat!

    Karen-
Results: Did not work. The web based shortcuts did not appear.
Below is the steps taken with your tips incorporated. (Again it's lengthy sorry about that, but anyone can recreate what was done here. Maybe someone can see something left out by doing/reviewing it).
    Here is what was done:
    1. Installed a fresh install of Windows 8.1 enterprise on a pc. No updates were ran.
    2. During setup created the admin account.
    3. Logged into the account a simple start screen was arranged and setup by:
Starting desktop Internet Explorer. Going to Technet's website. Clicked tools and then selecting "Add site to Apps" from the drop down menu. Went to Apps screen, right clicked and pinned it to start screen. Repeated this procedure with an
    educational web based site.
Right clicked a few provisioned apps and unpinned them from the start screen.
Made a few groups and labeled them. Web based shortcuts were arranged with one provisioned app in that particular group.
    4. Opened a Powershell, right clicked it and ran as administrator. Typed the following:
    export-startlayout -path C:\Users\Public\Master.xml -as xml
(Master is the name chosen for this test .xml file and was put in a location all users would have privelages to access it).
    5. Opened the command prompt and right clicked and "ran as administrator", typed in gpedit.
    6. In the Local Group Policy under User Configuration, under Start Menu and Taskbar I choose the Start Screen Layout.
    7. Enabled the policy and typed in: C:\Users\Public\Master.xml for the Start Layout File.
    8. Opened computer management, under Local Users and Groups I chose Users, right clicked in the middle screen and created a new user called Alpha.
    9. Logged out of the inital account and logged into newly created Alpha account.
    10. When the Alpha account logged in the start screen came up with everything changed in the inital account but no web based shortcuts were found on the start screen or App view.

  • Use GPO to set default language options, IME, display settings?

new to GPO, we have a small Windows Server 2012 domain, all clients on Win7 or Win8.  All the clients require the following changes, anything I can automate this with GPO?  thanks
Under Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language > Add Traditional Chinese HK SAR
Under Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language > Traditional Chinese HK SAR > Options, Add Microsoft Quick IME
Under Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings - change language bar hot keys
        - CTRL+SHIFT+0 ------  To English (United States) - US
        - CTRL+SHIFT+0 ------  To Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan) - Microsoft Quick IME
Under Control Panel > Region > Advimistrative > Change System Locale...  change to Chinese HK SAR for non-unicode programs
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display > Change the size of all items, use custom 123%.
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display > Update Text size to 8 for Title bars, Menu, Message Boxes, Icons, Tooltips
I found this for the display scaling registry changes but it is for 125% and it uses 78 for the dword value, not sure about custom 123%.

    Hi lilyl,
According to your description, you would like to deploy some settings about language and display via GPO.
According to my knowledge, the steps you provided are from Windows 8 clients. Based on my test, you can use the following methods to realize:
Add Traditional Chinese HK SAR. Locate the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload, and then add a String Value "next number"(which has not been used)=00000404.
The region settings. Please refer to the similar post:

The display settings. The post you provided tells us the related registry keys, and you should try to find the right value since you want to custom it.
In addtion, please refer to the following article to learn to deploy a registry item:

  • Start Screen Listed as Unused in Library

Just recorded the following for the Adobe Captivate Bug Reporting system:
    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
    Steps to reproduce bug:
1.Set a PNG as start screen instead of Autoplay
    2.Save project
    3.Check Library for Unused Assets
    4. Remove unused assets
    Results:
    1. Start screen is removed because it is flagged as an unused asset.
    2. Movie then starts with slide one.
    Expected results:
    1. Library Cleanup would not see start screen image as "unused."
    2. Library Cleanup should not remove the start screen that is used in place of autoplay.

    WORK AROUND:
Because the startup screen appears instead of AutoPlay, each time you preview the movie/project you will see the startup screen and will have to click the play button (a triangular shaped arrow). This happens even if you are only previewing the next five slides. Therefore, the workaround is this: don't put on the startup screen until you are at the final publishing stage; use AutoPlay until you are ready to release the project.
Adobe is considering fixing the bug for the next release (date and content unknown).
NOTE: Before final publishing, purge the library of unused assets, THEN set up a start screen (and turn off AutoPlay), then publish, then luxuriate in accolades.

When Goggling this problem, I see that I am not alone in thee problem, but I am alone in the fact that I don't even know what model it is (I think G3, but not sure), let alone have the original CDs or paperwork. I have tried holding 'shift' right after the startup chime to start up in safe mode, but it still gets stuck at "Login Window starting." I have attached a few pictures of the computer to help you veteran Mac users identify it, which might help you help me. Any help is appreciated. (Step-by-step instructions are best, I am good at using a Mac, but this is getting pretty technical.)

    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine. It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS. It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.

There is no need to partition. You can save hard drive space by doing a custom install. Leave out the print drivers you do not need and the languages you do not need. Doing so you will need about three gigabytes of space.

  • Windows 8, set default application for example adobe reader, customize the start screen

I have two questions, Im going to deploy Windows 8 to our company, but have 2 big issues.
    1) I need to customize the start screen, but cant find anywhere in the gpo´s? How can I do this without sysprepping etc (deploying with SCCM2012 SP1)
    2) I need to set the default programs for adobe reader, mspaint etc, how can I do this? It doesnt work with the GPP and folder options, anyone have done this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Thanks for posting your question in the forum. First of all, if you want to deploy customized Windows 8 Start Screen for domain users, I suggest we could refer to the following similar threads
    and article.

Regarding the second question, since you want to set the default programs via Group Policy but it didn’t work. Would you please let me know how did you configure the setting? Please refer to
the following steps to configure the GPO setting.
To create a new Open With preference item
    Open the
Group Policy Management Console. Right-click the Group Policy object (GPO) that should contain the new preference item, and then click
    Edit.
    In the console tree under
User Configuration, expand the Preferences folder, and then expand the
    Control Panel Settings folder.
    Right-click the
Folder Options node, point to New, and select
    Open With.
    In the
New Open With Properties dialog box, select an Action for  Group Policy to perform.
Enter Open With settings for Group Policy to configure or remove.
    Click the
Common tab, configure any options, and then type your comments in the
    Description box.
    Click
OK. The new preference item appears in the details pane.
For details, please refer to the following article.
    Configure an Open With Item
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732272.aspx
In addition, I suggest we could collect the following information to narrow down the cause of the issue.
    GPMC.log
    ==================
    a. On domain controller, click Start ->Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console.
    b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic computer and user account (please place appropriately). (Choose computer and select
the proper user in the wizard)
    c. Right click
the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML file.
    Hope this helps.

  • Make start screen tiles open new window by default?

let me preface this by saying "I like the windows 8 start screen and I don't miss the start menu."
    but.
the default behavior for start screen tiles seems to be "take me to the open instance of this application."
if I click the notepad tile to open notepad, it opens notepad. if I click the tile again, it takes me to that notepad I just opened the first time I clicked the tile. if I want to open two instances of notepad, I have to right-click the tile and then
choose "open new window," which may or may not be on the complete opposite corner of the screen from my notepad tile.
for what it's worth, this was not the behavior in the old start menu.
is there a registry hack or group policy I can put in to say "start tiles always open a new instance of desktop apps"? I use two monitors and have a lot of things open. sometimes I might not even remember that I have notepad (or remote
desktop, or excel, or powershell) running until I've already clicked the tile "again" instead of right-clicking and choosing "open in new window." this may seem like a minor thing, but it just seems like something I should have a *choice*
    on.
the unfortunate flip side of this is that the new dual-monitor taskbar does what exactly what I want the start screen to do, but what I DON'T want the taskbar to do. that is, if I:
    A. have a outlook pinned to the taskbar on my primary monitor
    B. have outlook open on my second monitor
    C. click the pinned outlook icon on the first monitor
windows opens a new instance of outlook instead of just taking me to the open instance. and as if to twist the knife and say "i'm doing this wrong on purpose," it opens this new instance on the second monitor, right in front of the first
    instance.
so the start screen knows if outlook is open on either monitor, but the taskbar on monitor1 doesn't know/care if outlook is open on monitor2.
(any of this addressed in 8.1?)

For those domain administrators need to push this to multiple users, but don't want to change the registry setting on each and every users (could be hundreds, or even thousands of them), here is a GPO template I made so you can push the registry change
to selected domain users and groups.

  • How do you either set "Show More Tiles" or Start Screen rows via command line or script for Windows 8.1?

Is there a method to change the Start Screens number of rows (similar to Windows 8.0's use of the Explorer\Scaling\MonitorSize in registry). Possibly by forcing the switch for "Show More Tiles" via script etc? This is to enable the device with
Windows 8.1 to be built using a deployment methodology like SCCM and have the Tiles correctly configured as required for a standard look and feel across devices. I do not know why all these switches are not represented in either WMI or the registry to enable
the customization of look and feel out of the box for enterprise deployments.
    Thanks for any assistance possible.

  • When I click on the Nightly Windows 8 Start Screen icon it opens the Firefox 18 on desktop, how do I open Nightly on Metro?

Nightly was working on metro at first when I haven't installed Firefox 18 yet but when I installed Firefox 18 and thought it would run on metro if I set it as a default program which did not, opening nightly both on the desktop and start screen would open the firefox in the desktop instead.
I uninstalled Nightly and downloaded and installed the version 20 for 32 bit. When I looked on the default programs to set Nightly all I could see is Nightly on the list but the icon has changed to that of Firefox's. I set it as default and still it doesn't open as metro.
Any ideas how to fix this?

This is because the regular central Nightly channel builds is only the desktop version. The version on Nightly development channel is at 21.0a1 now actually.
You need a build that has Metro support.

Many users state they cannot get Metro version to work on 32-bit Windows anyways.
There is this running thread at mozillaZine about the Metro builds. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2304983
