Set Duo core to single?

I require the ability to run with a single core due to a certain conflict with Duo Core running and need some help on how to do this...if possible.
MoBo=P6NGM2-L
Bios v2.2
CPU:Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 Processor BX80571E5200 - 2.50GHz, 2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB, Wolfdale, Dual Core, Retail, Socket 775, Processor with Fan.
I'm told this should be done within the BIOS but can't find that feature.
I know this takes away from it's ability but I require it to be single core until I can get a new different PC single core setup

I am not sure I am quite getting the point of doing this, as Single Core Operations usually just run on one Core to begin with and you should be able to restrict that application or service to one Core by simply using the Device Manager.
You cannot really turn off one of the processor's cores independently. All you can do is to trick the operating system into believing that there are no two cores. Usually, you would do that by forcing an uni-core HAL during Windows Installation.
Which Windows Version are you using? If you are using Windows XP, set MPS Table Version to 1.1 in BIOS and see if XP is able to automatically adjust to the changes. In Vista, there is an advanced Boot Option named "Re-detect HAL" or something like that.

Your current HAL should be ""ACPI Multiprocessor PC," ACPI APIC MP HAL (Halmacpi.dll)". Changing the MPS Table Version (MPS = MultiProcessor Specification) from 1.4 to 1.1, should yield the ""ACPI Uniprocessor PC," ACPI APIC UP HAL (Halaacpi.dll)" HAL.

Core Duo and the later Core 2 Duo is the technology that places two cpu cores together on a single silicon chip. This has no bearing on the ability to run Windows Applications.
The technologies that would interest you in this regard are programs that allow you to run Windows programs on your Mac. There are several, but perhaps the two most comon ones are Parallels and Boot Camp.
Boot Camp will allow you to dual boot your Mac into the Windows environment where you can run Windows XP natively on your Mac hardware.
Parallels will let you set up a virtual machine environment where you can run Windows XP from within the Mac OS X enviroment.

I am having trouble switching to iCloud. I've upgrade my iPhone software to iOS5, but when I try to upgrade my Macbook software OS 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2 it says I need "Core 2, Duo, Core i3, i5, i7, or Xeon processor. $$%^

I've upgrade my iPhone software to iOS5 (now I have to get the software in my car upgraded because the iPHone won't play music through the system...another subject.) For iCloud on my Macbook, when I try to upgrade my Macbook software OS 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2 (required for iCloud) it says I need "Core 2, Duo, Core i3, i5, i7, or Xeon processor. I'm afraid your Mac cannot be upgraded to Lion, and thus is not compliant with iCloud. The only option you have there is to set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email, but the other facilities won't work.

Can not for the life of me get printing to work on my mac mini duo core

I have a photosmart 7550 and laserjet 1012. And I can't get my mac mini to recognize either printer. This has been driving me nuts. I was a long time mac user in the 80s and early 90s. Switched to Windows. Just switched back with the mac mini (intel duo core). And I hate to say it, but it's just been an awful transition. My wife, which hates me that I made her get rid of her windows machine and switched it with this mini. If I don't get this mac printing I'm going to have to get rid of it.
I've installed/reinstalled drivers from HP, removing the library/printer/hp directory. Guten-print. Nothing is working for me.
Can anyone help me?

If the printers are not being recognized by the Printer Setup Utility, it may mean that the printing services has not started up. You can check for this by using the Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities). Set it to show "All Processes", then click on the "Process Name" tab. That will sort the running processes in alphabetical order. Look for an entry for "cupsd". If you find no such entry, printing services is not running. You can probably turn it on by enabling Printer sharing (System Preferences-->Sharing).
There should be a driver for the Laserjet 1012 that will be useable once you get the computer to recognize that there is a printer there. This according to the Apple article listing the drivers included with Intel Macs . Unfortunately, that article does not list a driver for the 7550. According to HP's support site, they do have drivers for Mac OS X 10.4. There is no entry, however, for the Intel Macs. I think you will have to wait for HP to release Intel drivers for the Photosmart printer.

In mail, running 10.4.4 on my new duo core intel mac, i am getting images in mails beautifully - and then for no explicable reason they disappeare and revert to code - and nothing i do will bring them back - i have already checked the box for download images from html in mail:preferences:viewing window.

So NOW with all the data, properly in my Netscape Mail "local folders" I can easiliy (but slowly) convert them to Mac Mail.
Sorry for pulling the trigger too soon, It works perfectly if I use the proper backup data.

Duo Core 2 & Windows XP HOME (S2)

I just purchased an iMac 20" Duo Core 2. Being that I'm NOT an experienced Mac user, I had the CompUSA service tech install Windows for me. He told me that I couldn't install Windows XP HOME (S2) - that I had to install Windows XP Pro (S2) because of the new Duo Core 2 processor. XP Pro cost an extra $100.
Does anyone know how accurate this is? The current version of Boot Camp (1.1.1) states that XP HOME (S2) can be used.
If I had been better informed, I could have bought the 24" iMac with the money the Techs weasled me out of with their bad information and bad install of the XP system. I had to reinstall XP when I got home.

I've seen a few people stuble into this confusing area before, it is interesting to see that Microsoft isn't making things any clearer on their web page. Unfortuneatly mhunter was off base. As you can see on this page,

Microsoft differentiates a processor from a core pretty clearly. At the bottom of the page it even mentions that while the per processor licensing (a server thing) doesn't apply to XP Pro, or XP Home the following applies...
"A. Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Home are not affected by this policy as they are licensed per installation and not per processor. Windows XP Professional can support up to two processors regardless of the number of cores on the processor. Microsoft Windows XP Home supports one processor."

The bottom line it, XP Home DOES support multiple cores on a single processor. If you have multiple processors, You'll need XP Pro regardless of how many cores they have.

From this link you can see that XP Home does indeed install the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to support multple cores on a single processor (like the Intel iMacs). If you had a MacPro, XP Pro would be your only choice.
It's interesting to me that this issue is still so unclear since the PC world addressed it some time back.

Firstly apologies if this question has been previously answered. However I have been trawlling the internet for ages trying to find out the correct cables to set up a macbook to an HD tv. All I want to do is connect two devices but everything I read seems to be about macbook pro 2009 onwards - what about those of us you have older macs?
Sometime ago I was given as a present an iwires mini display to hdmi cable set. On the box it said suitable for Macbook pre 2010. My Macbook is a 13" duo core 2006 . Anyway the cable didn't fit and because the package had been opened couldn't get a refund.
Please can anyone in simple terms tell me which HDMI cables I need to connect to the tv so that I get both audio and video.

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

You'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual though to see if it might have audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.

2.0 GHz Intel Quad core i7 vs. 3.7 GHz Intel Duo Core i7 Processor: Why not make the Quad Core 3.7GHz?

I don't really understand processors, but is the 2.0GHz Quad Core i7 really a better processor in terms of performance? If it has 4 cores why not give it greater processing speed like 2.7 or 3.0 GHz?
I am asking because I am thinking about getting the high end Mac Mini, but I see that it's processor runs at 2.0GHz and the others in the line run at 2.5 and 2.7 respectively. Why is this?

I'm really oversimplifying here, but...
Let's just assume that each core runs at full speed all the time, the total performance of that processor would be the sum of the running totals of each core:
Duo Core i7 = 2 (cores) * 2.7 GHZ = 5.4 Ghz total processor power
Quad Core i5 = 4 (cores) * 2.0 GHZ = 8.0 Ghz
Like I said, oversimplified. But, you get the point. Not to mention, most apps still aren't optimized, so at a given time they only use a single core anyway. In this case, it'd be more beneficial to have more cores, since they would (hypothetically) be able to run more simultaneous processes (four vs. two in your case).
I gues the greater question is: what were you planning on using the mini for? Most CPUs go underutilized anyway, so you may be better off getting a 2.0, and maxing out your RAM and maybe adding a SSD. Those upgrades (the SSD especially) will result in a very noticeable increase in performance.

Processor question - Dual core vs. single core.

I currently have an Aspire 6930 laptop that I bought about a year ago on clearance from Best Buy. I'm quite happy with it. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (2.0 GHZ, 800MHz, FSB, 2 MB L2 cache), 3 GB DDR2, 320 GB HDD if that means anything. I'm not a computer geek so really don't know much about this stuff.
Our old laptop is a modular laptop (about 4 years old) which my husband is using (I won't let him mess with my Aspire - long story) and it's pretty much falling apart. None of the USB ports work, the CD/DVD RW is broken, one of the hinges is busted so it won't close properly and it runs slower than a snails pace as he's dowloaded any and all "speed up your PC" and "diagnose your PC" programs from the web - if it's on the web it must be true, right???? Anyway, I've taken pity on him and have decided to try to buy him a new laptop as a combination 10 year anniversary/42nd birthday/Christmas present. Money is a HUGE issue as I'm a SAHM and have been pinching pennies and clipping coupons from the grocery money to try to come up with some funds for this surprise. I'd like to stay around $400.

We are not gamers. DH basically uses the computer to surf the web, watch Youtube video's, upload and download photo's, burn DVD's, etc. He does talk with family overseas so I would need/like to add a webcam.

But the Asus has a Pentium processor which I've heard isn't the best???? Also, it's over $150 more. Is the duo processor and increase processor speed (1.6GHz vs 2.1 GHz) really going to increase the speed/response time significantly for what we do on the computer?? An extra $150 is going to be really tough for me to come up with but if it will truly make a significant difference I will try to find it somewhere.
Your thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input. We really don't have the space for a desktop which is why the laptop worked so well for us. The only place to put a desktop is on the kitchen table and then we are always taking it apart when family come for dinner (which is often). I thought of netbook, but it does seem so limited. My husband is an amateur photographer and I would like the larger screen so that if he decides to persue this he would be able to do some basic photo editing, etc.

Hotmail/intel duo core

Has anyone successfully downloaded the plugin for hotmail in mail on the new intel duo core and managed to get it to work?
v grateful for any advice on how to do this. i have installed the plugin but it doesn't seem to be recognised in the options for account set up.

I don't believe the httpmail plugin is Universal yet which means it runs/works for the Mail.app on a PowerPC Mac at the present time only.
An Intel Mac includes Rosetta which is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh computer—it allows applications to run as nonnative binaries.
For the Intel based Mail.app (which should be Universal), try selecting run as a PowerPC binary (which requires Rosetta) using Get Info for the Mail.app application via the Finder.
This should allow the httpmail plugin to work.

Random reboots - Mac Mini Duo Core - heat related?

I've had my mini for a few weeks, with the original memory, but haven't played with all the features. Then I had 3rd party memory installed (by my local CompUSA, I bought the memory directly from another source) to bring the box up to 2 Gig. Now most functions work just fine, I can run in Safari and Thunderbird (instead of Mail) and GarageBand all day (like for 12 hours). However, if I go into the supplied Big Bang Board Games and play Reversi, either with other apps running or not, the mac will reboot itself. I've had it reboot itself in other random places, but not the big apps. I can't say exactly if the rebooting started after putting in the 2 Gig memory, I didn't start playing Reversi until after I had the memory installed. I've downloaded memtest from Memtest.org, the memory appears fine, even running the test in single user mode. I've also run the TechTools CD (with the AppleCare Protection Plan) and the Apple Hardware Test from the original Disc #1 DVD that comes with the mini. They all show memory, and for that matter, all the other hardware is fine. I've downloaded a temperature app and I see that the processors run consistently above 47C and it's more likely to happen when it's higher than that. However, I played a few games of Reversi right after a reboot and the temperature showing 29C and it rebooted.
Obviously I'd like to NOT blame the 3rd party memory, as it's a hassle to take the mini back to CompUSA and shell out another $30 for them to take it out. But the memory tests all came back fine.
It almost seems like anything doing any real graphic activity, such as the art work in Reversi seems to trigger the reboots. But web browsing doesn't affect it.
So what shall I do?
Could it be the 3rd party memory?
Could it be that the memory was installed wrong and messed up something else?
Could the installation of the memory affect the cooling fan and cause heat errors (reboots)?
Is Reversi that bad of a game that makes the mini reboot itself as a common occurrence?
It doesn't exclusively reboot in Reversi, it can reboot elsewhere, but it reboots more often there than anywhere else.

I just purchased two gig of ram for my intel duo core mac mini and cannot figure out how to install. I was able to get the cover off - but where does the RAM go?
I can't find any instructions on the apple support page for the mac mini.
All of the links in discussion board that I found are for instructions on installing ram on single processor mac mini which uses different type of ram and is installed in diff location.

Using Adobe CS2 with mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 .17"

As a designer working on high definition heavy graphic files intended for digital printing, i am about to go for mc book pro 2,16 duo core and 2gb ram.
I need to use CS2 (photoshop, illustrator) and know that it is not a native soft version, so not otimized for this processor. Any how, I just cannot wait CS3 (Adobe says 2007 whenever they are ready !), so I need advise of professional users of such applications on this mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 17".
I heard pretty scary rumours about such a professional use.

CS runs beautifully, with really no lag at all. Keep in mind that I haven't gotten to upgrading from 1 GB RAM to 2 yet, since my tablet died and I needed to replace that. I just installed CS2 last week, and there is a lag, and we'll soon see if more memory helps. Everything works fine, no crashes, etc., but there is in my opinion a noticeable difference in loading time, and various other tasks within the apps take longer. Again, CS2 works just fine, but the performance of CS is much better.

After installation of OSX Snow Leopard and installation of neccessary updates to it you can then use the Mac App Store to buy OSX Lion and install it.
