Set file-saving preferences

Is there still a bug in the Saving part of Elements Preferences for the Mac?  Did version 10 correct it?

  • How to set file opening preference in OS 10.5

I have around 1500 Census files which are JPEGS, and they opened nicely with Preview.  Today, I loaded most of iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb).  Now, for some reason, every one of those files wants to be opened with Adobe Illustrator which is far from optimal for viewing them.  Preview is not even recognized now by the operating system as a means of opening JPEGS, and it refuses to open them even though it is open and running.
Is it possible somewhere in the operating system to specify what piece of software has a preference to open a certain type of file?  All of those files which once has as their opening preference Preview have now been converted to Adobe Illustrator.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Kappy, that did not work.  I did a Google search on the subject and learned about an app called RCDefaultApp.  I downloaded that and placed it in my Library file as directed.  I then closed System Preferences and reopened it. The app showed up on the far left of the "Other" line of System Preferences.
This let me set default apps for each "extension."  Sure enough, Illustrator was set to open jpeg, jpg, JPG, JPEG and PNG files.  I changed all of them to Preview.  Well, it still didn't work.  Even though Preview was open and actually allowing me to view one of these files, it would not let me open another one of them.
About ready to tear my hair out, I decided if all else fails restart the computer.  That fixed the problem.  It appears the opening preferences got returned to their original values.  The files now open with Preview.
Interestingly, when I started installing iLife, there was a warning that I would have to restart my computer when the software was loaded.  I omitted GarageBand which I don't need.  There was never any alert that the software was loaded and I should restart my computer.  So, I didn't.  Maybe some corruption crept in as a result.
While at it, I also went into Finder preferences and checked the block under Advanced to show all extensions.  Quite a few of those census files had none, and they do now.
Preview is working now and is opening all those files.  I also tried two small PNGs which I trashed because they would not open, and they work, too.  Happiness!!

  • File Saving preferences

We are new to using OSX in our newspaper production. When we receive new images, by e-mail for example, we open them up, touch them up, and save them in their proper folders. It used to be that once we saved one image to its new locations, the application "knew" that the next save would be to that new location, too. But now every application goes back to the original folder. This is very time consuming. There used to be a way to fix this, in system preferences somewhere. But I can't find it in OSX. Any suggestions?

It's not (and never has been) a "feature" of OS X. However, you can purchase the shareware utility called Default Folder X (VersionTracker or MacUpdate) which provides that and many other conveniences well worth the shareware fee.

  • Setting file type in preferences

I seem to be unable to have PSE 9 set the file type. When I change the preference it alwasy goes back to never. What am I doing wrong.
    Bob

I take it you have a mac and you mean that the file extension preference keeps setting itself to Never?
This is a known bug, caused by merely opening the Saving Files preferences in PSE 9. There are two workarounds:
    1. Just type in the extension manually, or
2.Quit the PSE editor, then relaunch it while holding down command+shift+option. Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do. Then never open the Saving Files preference window again.

  • Downloaded adobe photoshop elements 10 editor from Mac app store onto my mac book pro, set i photo preferences to APE 10 Editor, but can not open any files from my library, error saying " program error". What else do I need to do?

Have downloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor from the Mac App Store onto my Mac Book Pro, set i photo preferences to Adobe PSE 10 editor, but when I try to open a file from my photo library, the following message appears: "could not complete your request because of a program error". What can I do to resolve this issue?

What version of Premiere Elements and what computer operating system? You have a few other threads awaiting follow up, and consequently that information
    is not available elsewhere.
    What is your specific export...
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    and Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 or something like that.
    Specific please.
But what specifically are you entering in the Save In: field of the dialog that includes the Save button to initiate the export process.
Are you saving it as a file to the Desktop or to a specific folder on the Desktop? Have you given the export a distinctive file name?
The screenshot shows the Save In: to the Desktop as a file.
I have no idea of your background with the program, so I ask these questions so as to take nothing for granted.
If the computer Desktop is crowded, as mine often is, it is easy to have difficulty spotting a file save to the Desktop.
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thank you.

  • Can i set different energy saving preferences for different accounts?

    Hi,
I have bought an Mbox for my iMac. Its instructions for installation include disabling the energy saving features in Preferences.
However, I also want to use the machine for many other purposes and would prefer to have energy saving activated.
I set up a new account but it seems that energy saving preferences can't be different between different users on the machine? Is that true?
I have tried unlocking and locking after making the change and switching between accounts (both admin accounts at present)
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   c2d, 2GB
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Niel,
When i entered the syntax exactly as you recommended, and as provided as example code within the general commands manual for PMSET ie
do shell script pmset - a displaysleep 0 disksleep 0 sleep 0 password
    "password" with administrator privileges
I got a syntax error "A identifier can't go after this identifier." and it highlighted [-a displaysleep]
By inserting carriage returns to spread the command over lines, and adding brackets around the minutes, I got increasing acceptance of the script, up to the following point
do shell script pmset - a
    displaysleep(0)
    disksleep(0)
    sleep(0)
    password
    "password" with administrator
    privileges
at which point it said "The variable pmset is not defined."
Can you suggest where I am getting stuck? Is something missing?
Late news: A friend of mine found script on line which seemed to suggest that the following would be the format
do shell script ("pmset displaysleep 0 disksleep 0 sleep 0") password "my password"
    with administrator privileges
However, when i try to compile or run that it says:
Expected “timeout” or “transaction” but found identifier
and it highlights the word [administrator]
If you can see where i am going wrong I'd love to hear from you.

  • Document file saving confusion using desktop "alias" folder

I'm having trouble finding files in Snow Leopard. My question is , where are "saved" document files supposed to go?
I like using a desktop alias folder, but over time I've played around with Time Machine, adding and deleted folders in the Dock, and created three or four different alias folders and basically I've screwed the pooch; there are now non-duplicate folders named "User Name" and "User Name 2"  (plus the  empty "Documents" sub-folder I've heard is a place holder for older software files ?) on the HD and I don't what is where the new files are being saved.
In any case, I may have two, three or even four sets of partial documents, so I need to do some work moving files around, trashing some and condsolidating the rest into the master Documents file ... but before I go through all that I need to make sure I understand where the OS wants saved files to go.
Is this path correct ? MS Word > Save > Documents Alias Folder > HD > Users > User Name > Documents.
If that's correct, then I can go to the various Word 2011  forums and find out how to make sure files are being saved using that path.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Stuffit's default is to decompress files saved to the desktop.
Pages documents are actually zipped folders.
Look in the Stuffit preferences and see if you can turn it off. Or get out of the habit of saving to the desktop, there are better places to organise your work
I disagree that Stuffit is useless, in fact it really is the swiss army knife of decompression and pays to have it around. Amongst other archive utilities.

  • Double-Click Setting not saved

Help! On my brand-new MBP 13" the double-click speed is not saved with "Keyboard & Mouse" preferences.
Everytime I log in the double-click speed rate is set to "slow" and as a result many mouse-clicks are considered as "double" without intended to be. After correcting the setting everything works fine ... until the next log-out / log-in.
I already trashed the preference file without success.
Any suggestions? This behaviour is really annoying ...

  • Lion not saving preferences

I just switched to a new retina macbook, with os 10.7. I'm having trouble with Linotype Font Explorer X not retaining its settings - previously, you could turn a font on & it would stay on. Although sometimes it does retain some of the font settings, but not all.
I've also noticed other programs occasionally not saving preferences.
Is this a known issue with Lion?

Make sure the systemprefs plist file is not locked. If it is, unlock it. If it isn't, delete it then restart.
    To find the file
    1. Make Finder active. Choose 'Go' from the menu bar, hold down the option key.
    2. Choose Library (you must have the 'option' key held down).
    3. Go to Preferences > com.apple.systemprefereces.plist
    4. Right-click (or hit 'cmd-i' on the keyboard) and choose 'Get Info'. If the 'Locked' option is ticked, untick it. Then Restart. If the 'Locked' option is not ticked, close the dialogue, remove the file to trash. Restart.
    5. What happens now is that system will restart at default system prefs. However, it should now save your new settings. To test it, just set one of the setting that you know didn't 'stick before', then restart and see if all is good.

  • Setting save as preferences??

Any idea how to override the save as preferences when you close out a picture
Defaults to file size three low quality as the save preference.....Hate seeing a 4 mg file saved as 444kb size especially when I'm doing large prints
Also, seem to set the file size save to low qualiy(3) when I attempt to watermark several files
Any reset options would be appreciated

I assume you're referring to JPG files.
In PSE9, if I simply close the JPG file after editing, I get a couple of prompts and dialog boxes for the location and filename, etc., then this window:
Once I set the "Quality", that's what is pre-populated the next time that window appears.
Similarily, for batch watermarking the dialog box retains the last used quality setting:

  • V10 Default Settings For File saving

Hello, Could someone please tell me the default setting for file saving options in preferences for Elements V10 ?
    Thank you.

If you reset the Preferences, all preferences will be set to their defaults:  Hold down your Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys when launching the Editor and answer "Yes" to the prompt asking if you want to delete the Preferences.  They will be re-built.

  • Pages can´t open files saved in iCloud

I can´t open any file save to iCloud
    I tried a workaraound:
I couldn´t open a file save to iCloud from my iPad.
I opened it from icloud.com and downloaded it to my iMac.
Opened the downloaded file, and everything semed ok.
I then closed the dokument and opened the file on my ipad again. Made som editing before I closed the dokument.
Then I tried to open it again in Pages on my iMac, but couldent open it.
    Translated: Couldn´t open the file ".... ..."
I also tried to open a file saved to icloud (without opening it on other machines and devises). Pages couldn´t open those files either...
    Can sombody help me?

Possibly you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.

  • Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?

My work involves preparing images for printing lightboxes and window installations.  My clients require to pre-approve the photos before printing.
I usually save my files as psd but since the files are very large in this format I usually save another copy as a jpg file that has a much smaller file size.  This makes it possible for me to add these to a presentation and and send them to my client.
Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?  Or do I still have to do this manually?

If you save the document manually as a PSD file in Phtoshop not from within an Action, Script, Plugin or Droplette.  You may be able to write a Photoshop that would do as save as Jpeg,  And you should be able trigger its execution by setting up a Script Save event using the Script event manager.  When You do a manual save  the script should be triggered.  I wrote may be able to for I have never tried to write that script or set up a Script Manager Save event.  I have only use open events.

  • Photoshop CS6 files saved to User/Library/Caches/Temporary Items

Many of the users on my school network cannot save their Photoshop files to a specified folder. Instead the files are automatically saved to User/Library/Caches/Temporary Items folder.
I've changed the File Handling Preferences with no results in changing this issue. Since a couple users did not experience this problem, I'm wondering if it might be a permissions problem.
