Set language without language portlet
Hello,
I want to force the language to dutch for all of our users, but don't want them to choose this language on the language portlet or to change the language settings in their browsers.
Jerry Silver suggested in Setting language for a group the use of patch 2948019.
This patch installs wwctx_api.set_nls_language
In portal 9.0.4 WWCTX_API.SET_NLS_LANGUAGE is available, but it says:
Note:</b> This API can only be used for portal sessions that
* have been created via SQL*Plus. It is not intended to be used in browser
* sessions for setting the NLS language and territory.
* The Set Language portlet should be used in that case.
Does someone knows a way to force the language to be different from US-English?
Thanks,
Ton
Hi Ton,
this seems to do the trick on our portal (9026):
<ORACLE>
begin
IF upper(portal.wwctx_api.get_http_language) <> 'NL-NL'
THEN
orasso.wwctx_app_language.set_language(
p_http_language => 'nl-nl',
p_nls_language => 'nl',
p_nls_territory => 'THE NETHERLANDS',
p_requested_url => 'http://hostname:7778/pls/portal/PORTAL.wwctx_app_language.set_language?p_http_language=nl-nl&p_nls_language=nl&p_nls_territory=THE NETHERLANDS&p_requested_url=http://hostname:7778/pls/portal/portal.home'
END IF;
exception
when others then htp.p(SQLCODE||':'||SQLERRM);
end;
</ORACLE>

java.util
Class Locale
java.lang.Object
java.util.Locale
All Implemented Interfaces:
Cloneable, Serializable
public final class Locale
extends Object
implements Cloneable, Serializable
A Locale object represents a specific geographical, political, or cultural region. An operation that requires a Locale to perform its task is called locale-sensitive and uses the Locale to tailor information for the user. For example, displaying a number is a locale-sensitive operation--the number should be formatted according to the customs/conventions of the user's native country, region, or culture.
Create a Locale object using the constructors in this class:
Locale(String language)
Locale(String language, String country)
Locale(String language, String country, String variant)
The language argument is a valid ISO Language Code. These codes are the lower-case, two-letter codes as defined by ISO-639. You can find a full list of these codes at a number of sites, such as:
http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/http/related/iso639.txt
The country argument is a valid ISO Country Code. These codes are the upper-case, two-letter codes as defined by ISO-3166. You can find a full list of these codes at a number of sites, such as:
http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/diverse/doc/ISO_3166.html
The variant argument is a vendor or browser-specific code. For example, use WIN for Windows, MAC for Macintosh, and POSIX for POSIX. Where there are two variants, separate them with an underscore, and put the most important one first. For example, a Traditional Spanish collation might construct a locale with parameters for language, country and variant as: "es", "ES", "Traditional_WIN".
Because a Locale object is just an identifier for a region, no validity check is performed when you construct a Locale. If you want to see whether particular resources are available for the Locale you construct, you must query those resources. For example, ask the NumberFormat for the locales it supports using its getAvailableLocales method.
Note: When you ask for a resource for a particular locale, you get back the best available match, not necessarily precisely what you asked for. For more information, look at ResourceBundle.
The Locale class provides a number of convenient constants that you can use to create Locale objects for commonly used locales. For example, the following creates a Locale object for the United States:
Locale.US
Once you've created a Locale you can query it for information about itself. Use getCountry to get the ISO Country Code and getLanguage to get the ISO Language Code. You can use getDisplayCountry to get the name of the country suitable for displaying to the user. Similarly, you can use getDisplayLanguage to get the name of the language suitable for displaying to the user. Interestingly, the getDisplayXXX methods are themselves locale-sensitive and have two versions: one that uses the default locale and one that uses the locale specified as an argument.
The Java 2 platform provides a number of classes that perform locale-sensitive operations. For example, the NumberFormat class formats numbers, currency, or percentages in a locale-sensitive manner. Classes such as NumberFormat have a number of convenience methods for creating a default object of that type. For example, the NumberFormat class provides these three convenience methods for creating a default NumberFormat object:
NumberFormat.getInstance()
NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance()
NumberFormat.getPercentInstance()
These methods have two variants; one with an explicit locale and one without; the latter using the default locale.
NumberFormat.getInstance(myLocale)
NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(myLocale)
NumberFormat.getPercentInstance(myLocale)
A Locale is the mechanism for identifying the kind of object (NumberFormat) that you would like to get. The locale is just a mechanism for identifying objects, not a container for the objects themselves.
Each class that performs locale-sensitive operations allows you to get all the available objects of that type. You can sift through these objects by language, country, or variant, and use the display names to present a menu to the user. For example, you can create a menu of all the collation objects suitable for a given language. Such classes must implement these three class methods:
public static Locale[] getAvailableLocales()
public static String getDisplayName(Locale objectLocale,
Locale displayLocale)
public static final String getDisplayName(Locale objectLocale)
// getDisplayName will throw MissingResourceException if the locale
// is not one of the available locales.

Method Detail
getDefault
public static Locale getDefault()Gets the current value of the default locale for this instance of the Java Virtual Machine.
The Java Virtual Machine sets the default locale during startup based on the host environment. It is used by many locale-sensitive methods if no locale is explicitly specified. It can be changed using the setDefault method.
Returns:
the default locale for this instance of the Java Virtual Machine
setDefault
public static void setDefault(Locale newLocale)Sets the default locale for this instance of the Java Virtual Machine. This does not affect the host locale.
If there is a security manager, its checkPermission method is called with a PropertyPermission("user.language", "write") permission before the default locale is changed.
The Java Virtual Machine sets the default locale during startup based on the host environment. It is used by many locale-sensitive methods if no locale is explicitly specified.
Since changing the default locale may affect many different areas of functionality, this method should only be used if the caller is prepared to reinitialize locale-sensitive code running within the same Java Virtual Machine, such as the user interface.
Parameters:
newLocale - the new default locale
Throws:
SecurityException - if a security manager exists and its checkPermission method doesn't allow the operation.
NullPointerException - if newLocale is null
See Also:
SecurityManager.checkPermission(java.security.Permission), PropertyPermission
getAvailableLocales
public static Locale[] getAvailableLocales()Returns a list of all installed locales.
getISOCountries
public static String[] getISOCountries()Returns a list of all 2-letter country codes defined in ISO 3166. Can be used to create Locales.
getISOLanguages
public static String[] getISOLanguages()Returns a list of all 2-letter language codes defined in ISO 639. Can be used to create Locales. [NOTE: ISO 639 is not a stable standard-- some languages' codes have changed. The list this function returns includes both the new and the old codes for the languages whose codes have changed.]
getLanguage
public String getLanguage()Returns the language code for this locale, which will either be the empty string or a lowercase ISO 639 code.
NOTE: ISO 639 is not a stable standard-- some languages' codes have changed. Locale's constructor recognizes both the new and the old codes for the languages whose codes have changed, but this function always returns the old code. If you want to check for a specific language whose code has changed, don't do
if (locale.getLanguage().equals("he")
Instead, do
if (locale.getLanguage().equals(new Locale("he", "", "").getLanguage())

getDisplayLanguage()
getCountry
public String getCountry()Returns the country/region code for this locale, which will either be the empty string or an upercase ISO 3166 2-letter code.

getVariant
public String getVariant()Returns the variant code for this locale.
See Also:
getDisplayVariant()
toString
public final String toString()Getter for the programmatic name of the entire locale, with the language, country and variant separated by underbars. Language is always lower case, and country is always upper case. If the language is missing, the string will begin with an underbar. If both the language and country fields are missing, this function will return the empty string, even if the variant field is filled in (you can't have a locale with just a variant-- the variant must accompany a valid language or country code). Examples: "en", "de_DE", "_GB", "en_US_WIN", "de__POSIX", "fr__MAC"
Overrides:
toString in class Object
Returns:
a string representation of the object.
See Also:
getDisplayName()
getISO3Language
public String getISO3Language()
throws MissingResourceExceptionReturns a three-letter abbreviation for this locale's language. If the locale doesn't specify a language, this will be the empty string. Otherwise, this will be a lowercase ISO 639-2/T language code. The ISO 639-2 language codes can be found on-line at ftp://dkuug.dk/i18n/iso-639-2.txt
Throws:
MissingResourceException - Throws MissingResourceException if the three-letter language abbreviation is not available for this locale.
getISO3Country
public String getISO3Country()
throws MissingResourceExceptionReturns a three-letter abbreviation for this locale's country. If the locale doesn't specify a country, this will be tbe the empty string. Otherwise, this will be an uppercase ISO 3166 3-letter country code.
Throws:
MissingResourceException - Throws MissingResourceException if the three-letter country abbreviation is not available for this locale.
getDisplayLanguage
public final String getDisplayLanguage()Returns a name for the locale's language that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name returned will be localized for the default locale. For example, if the locale is fr_FR and the default locale is en_US, getDisplayLanguage() will return "French"; if the locale is en_US and the default locale is fr_FR, getDisplayLanguage() will return "anglais". If the name returned cannot be localized for the default locale, (say, we don't have a Japanese name for Croatian), this function falls back on the English name, and uses the ISO code as a last-resort value. If the locale doesn't specify a language, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayLanguage
public String getDisplayLanguage(Locale inLocale)Returns a name for the locale's language that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name returned will be localized according to inLocale. For example, if the locale is fr_FR and inLocale is en_US, getDisplayLanguage() will return "French"; if the locale is en_US and inLocale is fr_FR, getDisplayLanguage() will return "anglais". If the name returned cannot be localized according to inLocale, (say, we don't have a Japanese name for Croatian), this function falls back on the default locale, on the English name, and finally on the ISO code as a last-resort value. If the locale doesn't specify a language, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayCountry
public final String getDisplayCountry()Returns a name for the locale's country that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name returned will be localized for the default locale. For example, if the locale is fr_FR and the default locale is en_US, getDisplayCountry() will return "France"; if the locale is en_US and the default locale is fr_FR, getDisplayLanguage() will return "Etats-Unis". If the name returned cannot be localized for the default locale, (say, we don't have a Japanese name for Croatia), this function falls back on the English name, and uses the ISO code as a last-resort value. If the locale doesn't specify a country, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayCountry
public String getDisplayCountry(Locale inLocale)Returns a name for the locale's country that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name returned will be localized according to inLocale. For example, if the locale is fr_FR and inLocale is en_US, getDisplayCountry() will return "France"; if the locale is en_US and inLocale is fr_FR, getDisplayLanguage() will return "Etats-Unis". If the name returned cannot be localized according to inLocale. (say, we don't have a Japanese name for Croatia), this function falls back on the default locale, on the English name, and finally on the ISO code as a last-resort value. If the locale doesn't specify a country, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayVariant
public final String getDisplayVariant()Returns a name for the locale's variant code that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name will be localized for the default locale. If the locale doesn't specify a variant code, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayVariant
public String getDisplayVariant(Locale inLocale)Returns a name for the locale's variant code that is appropriate for display to the user. If possible, the name will be localized for inLocale. If the locale doesn't specify a variant code, this function returns the empty string.
getDisplayName
public final String getDisplayName()Returns a name for the locale that is appropriate for display to the user. This will be the values returned by getDisplayLanguage(), getDisplayCountry(), and getDisplayVariant() assembled into a single string. The display name will have one of the following forms:
language (country, variant)
language (country)

How can I change Firefox language without having to download it again?
Hi,
I'd like to know how I can change firefox language, without having to download and re-install it again. I read there is a way to do it, but I just can't find the language file I have to download. (I have firefox in french, and i want to set it in spanish)
thanks for your answersYou need an English language version and there is no en-US language pack in Firefox 3.6. If you do not want the download the en-US version then you can install the en-GB language and switch to that version and remove the Spanish es-ES language pack from the chrome folder in the Firefox program folder.
You can find all language pack here:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.11/win32/xpi/.
You can install language pack just like extensions.<br />
You can set the pref "general.useragent.locale" to the preferred language ("en-GB") on the about:config page.<br />
You can open the about:config page via the location bar, like you open a web site.<br />
Use the Filter bar at the top of that page to quickly locate the pref.
See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Language_packs
If you need the en-US dictionary then look here:<br />

How to get current language bar setting for input language
I am using Flex Builder 3, IE 7 and windows OS. Is there a
way to determine the current input language as set in the "language
bar"? The Capabilities class always returns "en" even after I set
Chinese ("ch") as my input language.Hi Dragon Cao,
No need to create any customer exit variable for this ..
You have standard variable CMONTH this displays current month summation. Just restrict your Key figure with this variable.
And in properities of Key figure goto Calculations> Local Calculations> select Summation.
If you want to assign some calday at run time sure you need to create customer exit variable using Step_2 value in enhancements(CMOD).
Regards,
Rajeswari.

When typing in gmail (firefox) or thunderbird, randomly foreign characters will be produced like the keyboard has been set to spanish or french, but it is set to english, and the character encoding is set to what it is supposed to be. Web pages appear correctly.

I searched lot of forums but all they say, install bos.loc.utf.EN_US Package for the Oracle BI locale setting english-usa language. From where we can download this package.
Thanks in advance.But I am assuming that when I make the installer, the 32-bit Run Time Engine is appened with the installer, as show below
Since from the picture you can see its including the support installers from '\Program Files (x86)\'
The application runs queries to fetch data from database in SQL server 2008, and for that I am using a Microsoft SQL Native Client 2008 R2 64 bit ( this is the only version that installs on either PC, even the one on which I developed my LV Application).
I am not using any driver, only toolkits for reports - and for that I un-checked the "Remove unused polymorphic VI instances" when making the executable, otherwise LV throws up an exception that share variable are not being included.
Yes I did reboot every time after I ran the installation.
Still getting the same error. -
Setting the reading language in PDF programmatically
Hi, I have searched the forums and didn't find a reliable post on how to set the reading language for accessibility in a PDF document programmatically. Maybe using a pdfmark or specifying XMP metadata or postscript code, javascript or any other way. Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks, this looks very promising. I am using FrameMaker and the FDK. Is
there a way to specify the
Lang key using pdfmark or XMP? I could also embed postscript code if I
knew what the correct code would
be. I don't know much about PDF/PS and any help will be appreciated. -
How to set the default language in preferences- dictionary- language
Hi guys,
i like to set the default dictionary language as well as the lookup path of the dictionary via script. I've found the property dictionary path as well as some settings for qoutation under languages with vendors:
app.languagesWithVendors[INDEX OF LANGUAGE].name
app.languagesWithVendors[INDEX OF LANGUAGE].dictionaryPaths
Thats fine, but how can it set a certain language with vendor as the default language for the application itself? Under the Preferences->Dictionary dialog, I can find a dropdown showing the default language. But how can I access this default or set it?
The application object has a property object called dictionaryPreferences, but this object only contains some flags like the merge behaviour but not the default language itself. So where is it?
app.dictionaryPreferences.mergeUserDictionary

APIOk guys,
in the meantime I think I got it. I can setup several dictionaries for several languages. Depending on the language I use in my paragraph styles the according dictionary will be used. Fine for the desktop.
But what about the InDesign Server! I use the server via scripting and SOAP ports, webservice calls. I've launched several webservice ports, like 10001,10002,10003,10004. In this case, I can set up a vendor dictionary by providing a path via script send to one port 10001 for example. But here are two problems:
1. The other InDesign Server instances aka webservice ports and engines won't get informed about the change. I have to run the script on all instances.
2. The change only lives as long as the instance is running but doesn't get saved. After restart the instance, the setup got lost.
So can I save the dictionary-setup with an pref-xml file, all InDesign Server instances would use and read per default? -
I have Hello screen after i slide to set up gel language options after select English , Egypt it request to connect with WI FI after connect start to activate my IPhone after that it unable to activated because the activation server is unavailable and request to connect to itunes and no activate.
4 possible causes of that message:
1] Activation server is actually down. Very rare occurrence, but it does happen.
When it does occur, down time is very short. Solution - try again.
2] Your firewall or antivirus are blocking the connection. Solution - temporarily
deactivate your firewall or antivirus until the update completes.
3] Computer being used for the activation has previously been used to jailbreak
an iOS device. Solution - use a computer that has not been used to jailbreak an
iOs device.
4] Your iPhone is jailbroken. Google may provide some direction. Be advised the jailbreak
may have made changes that will prevent the iPhone from successfully activating.
Terms of Use for this forum prohibit discussion of jailbroken iPhones. -

I was comfortable with my font settings and was enjoying Bengali Language side by side English. I forgot what was the actual settings. After an upgrade my settings have been changed. I want to know about the latest setting to accommodate both Bengali and English Language.

How I can set the spelling language in Pages for iPad?
how I can set the spelling language in Pages for iPad? may for german...
how I can set the spelling check to other language in Papers/iPad?
The only choices you have in the iPad itself are to change the keyboard or change the user interface language. If that doesn't do what you want, probably best ask the people who make Papers. -
Editing prtDefault.properties to set mandatory system language
I have seen a few threads suggesting that if you want to force a language for the portal to do it by editing the "prtDefault.properties " for the following two values:
request.mandatorylanguage=en
request.mandatorycountry=gb
However, I was curious if there is any other way to do this than editing a operating system level file. The "request.defaultlanguage" version of these parameters is editable in the System Administration -> System Config -> Service Config->Portal Runtime
Any chance there is a cleaner way to edit achieve this goal?Hi,
prtDefault.properties can only be modified at operating system level. Save a copy of the old one, modify, save again and restart the portal afterwards.
The one at System Administration -> System Config -> Service Config->Portal Runtime is not prtDefault.properties. There you can only set the default language, not the mandatory one.

Set the default language and other preferences
This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS1b49059a33f7772672b3318712c5ece24f8-8000.h tml
It is in the help, the issue is with finding it!
Click Help > Contents & Index.
When the help opens enter Default Language. The important bit is to tick This Reference Only so that you stay in the help. That tells you how to set the default language but not how to get to the screen where you do that. To get to that you need to go up a level, use the breadcrumbs.
I realise it's too late for what you wanted but it may help knowing how to get another answer in the future.
