Set Monitor iSight as Default?

I have a Macbook Pro with built in iSight and a 24" ACD with built in iSight. When hooked up to my monitor, I want to only use the ACD iSight. I want this to be the default for every application that uses iSight.
I don't want to do the hack-y load-up-iChat to "force a lock" onto the laptop camera every time I open up a piece of video conference software. The instructions, while definitely a creative workaround (and I applaud the effort) are just too obtuse to follow for the majority of my users.
Also, the users don't use iChat, and it's not on their Dock. So even if they dig through Applications and find it, when they try to follow those instructions, they'll get the "Please setup your iChat account" wizard which will require IT support to get rid of.
Any other ideas? I simply want to set a preference that basically says, "When given the choice between two iSight cameras, regardless of the application, always default to the one on the monitor."

(1) I do not know of any preference like that which you seek. Nor do I know of any single preference or other single setting that will do what you want to accomplish.
Unlike Sound, which allows selection of default input and output devices for your entire system via Mac OS X's  > System Preferences.... > Sound menu command, I cannot find a way to select a single, system-wide, default camera/sight/video device.
The best I can offer is the suggestion that you set the desired default camera for each individual app that you use with a camera. For some examples, see the following:
  http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11033260&#11033260
As long as you are using Mac OS X (10.5.8) (or earlier), there is no way to select among two connected cameras in Photo Booth other than the "hack-y" you "don't want to do". Photo Booth did not add a menu selectable camera choice until Snow Leopard.
(2) You may want to offer specific comments by using Mac OS X Feedback to send your suggestions for improvement directly to Apple. You will not get an answer, but the responsible Apple people will see your input for consideration in future product releases..

  • Set monitor to manufacturers defaults before monitor calibration

Hi, I just want to be absolutley sure here about something. I am wishing to do a complete fresh calibration of my monitor with spyder3 pro. When you calibrate for the first time you are asked to set the monitor back to default settings. In my IMAC under Preferences-Display-Colour-Profiles associated with this display one is given two choices, either Apples 1.8 or s'RGB (i know I have others when I untick that little box, I originally set my monitor back to 1.8, I had done my own calibration at 2.2 before i invested in the spyder software, so i went ahead and re-set the monitor to this profile since this was how it was shipped).
Was this the correct thing to do, if so, when I wish to RE-CALIBRATE, that is NOT CHECK THE CALIBRATION for accuracy, but to do a new calibration. Should I keep setting this monitor back to its default settings. Have I done the right thing?
    Thanks
    Chris.

It doesn't matter what profile you set in Apple's Display Preferences. The i1 Display calibrator clears the TRC and gamma curves from the video card LUTs from whatever profile is loaded no matter if it's 2.2 or 1.8 gamma. You set target gamma (should be 2.2) or native gamma in i1 Match and run it.
On the iMac all you can do is adjust the backlight with the brightness slider in Display Preferences. It should be adjusted according to how bright a white sheet of paper looks under available ambient light to display white. The preloaded profile would only influence the appearance of contrast in a grayramp as you adjust the brightness slider, not the brightness of the white on the display.
Other than that the preloaded canned profile doesn't influence anything but allow i1 Display to reload it after final calibration to compare before and after affects of calibration.

  • Setting "Monitor RGB" as default.

Like many others I know, I design ONLY for the screen and thus, I ALWAYS want my screen to soft proof to "Monitor RGB" in both Illustrator and Photoshop (CS3). I've developed the habit of selecting View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB and making sure that View > Proof Colors is checked EVERY SINGLE time I create or open a document. Is there a way I can set this as my default?
    (17" "unibody" MacBook Pro, CS3)

The variable that is used in this report is 1VERP. You can changed this via GS12 to enter the whatever plan version to default under the default value. For your information, the report group 1AIP is run when you run the t-code S_ALRr_87013613, which inturn runs the report 1AIP-001 that incorporate the variable 1VERP under the plan data for version selection.
But this may not be the best practise, because you will be changing the SAP standard, which will be overwritten when you upload support packages or do an upgrade. Better you copy this report and use your own version variable, by copying the 1VERP.

  • Set One Display as 'Default' on Startup?

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core that I have connected primarily to one external display (22" LCD monitor by Insignia) and two LCD projectors. The projectors are not always plugged in, because the primary use of this computer is in the tech booth of a theatre space, but logistically, we need to have the VGA cords for the projecters plugged into the back of the Mac at all times. I'm having trouble getting the computer to recognize the LCD monitor as the default/master display on startup (both when the projecters are plugged in and when they're not.) Is there a way to set the display settings to always recognize the port that the LCD monitor is plugged in to as a default? When it doesn't, I can't see the login screen on startup.
Thanks for any help you can give!

Login to your administrator account and in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, drag the menu bar to the picture of the 22" display.
Have you tried switching DVI ports on the back of the computer?

  • Monitor calibration and default brightness

I am using SpyderPro to calibrate my monitors. My G4 15-inch alum powerbook (purchased 11 months ago) has a brightness setting.
SpyderPro instructs me to set this monitor to its default. In this case, I've only brightness to set.
Might anyone know the brightness default?
    Suzie
    G4 Powerbook 15-inch alum   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Ideally, for your monitor profile to be valid, you should be checking images at the same brightness level that you set when you create the profile. I set my PowerBook to full brightness and calibrate it at that. When checking images, I set it to full brightness so that it matches the brightness assumed by the profile. I think the default is full on, but Philip Tyler has a point in that some LCDs are too bright at the top level. For example, there are reports that some Dell widescreen LCDs are too bright to be calibrated, even at their lowest setting. That's probably because Dell displays are made for consumers, not graphics pros like Apple's.
This is a tricky issue on the higher-end PowerBooks, because they have the ambient light sensor that can change the brightness at any time. I use my Eye-One calibrator with my LCD at highest brightness and make sure the LCD is set to that when checking images. It's a very good idea to turn off the auto brightness adjustment in the Displays preference during the calibration process to ensure it doesn't drift up and down during calibration. If you're a purist, you'll leave the ambient light adjustment off permanently so that the brightness is always the same, especially if you calibrated at a level other than full brightness. I like the feature so I leave it on, but not when calibrating.
With that in mind, I don't split hairs about color accuracy on the PowerBook. My calibrated CRT is so much better at rendering color that I feel like I can't trust my PowerBook LCD much even if it's calibrated. While it is a very good idea to calibrate the PowerBook LCD, if you really need good color, plug in a good external monitor. Either a decent CRT or a good DVI LCD like an Apple display.

  • Manually set Monitor Profile

Instead of Photoshop, et al using my Win7 x64 ICC monitor profile, I would like to set it manually, as I'm able to do in other applications.  Is this possible?
The reason why is that I have a Dell U3014 and using the software that comes with it, I want to use its sRGB mode (and an associated sRGB profile from my Spyder 4 set as my Windows default) for all of my regular apps, and AdobeRGB mode (and profile) for my CS and other color-aware apps. My other apps DxO, PhotoMechanic, Canon SLR apps, etc. let me choose the profile.

I would think that your calibration software would create a color profile for your display and set it into its device drivers color management configuration and set something up to load the Video Adapter LUT when the system boots up using the values stored in you displays color profile.  I think the software changes your systems displays color management configuration default profile. If not I think you should.
When you edit images in Photoshop you should be editing them in a standard color space like sRGB, Adobe RGB or ProPhotoRGB.  When ever Photoshop renders an image for you it will use the document color profile and your displays color profile to display the best colors you display is capable of displaying for the image.  You don't set your displays profile for Photoshop. Photoshop retrieves your displays profile from your system configuration.

  • When I email myself a picture from my iphone 4s, the email is sent from an email account that I don't have set up as the default account. How can I set it up so that the emails are coming from the default account selected in Mail?

Under my mail tab, it shows that I have a specific email account set up as a default account. That is the account I would like for me emails to be sent from. But when I actually send out an email such as a picture, it is being sent from one of my different email accounts that is not set up as the default. How can I change this so that future messages will be sent from the default account? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

All photo attachments received or sent with the iPhone's Mail app appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message when viewed with the iPhone's Mail app which is the same with the Mail.app on a Mac. A photo attachment that appears inline or viewed in place does not mean the photo was not sent as a true attachment to the message. A photo attached to a message with the iPhone's Mail app is sent as a true attachment to the message. How an inline or viewed in place attachment appears on the recipient's end depends on the recipient's email client. If the recipient's email client does not support viewing an attached photo inline or viewed in place within the body of the message, the attached file must be manually selected and opened to viewed.
I am getting the email with the Picture Inline ( not as attachment),The picture is shown distorted , no metter what i do and with what mail client i am using (Gmail\Hotmail\My Enterprise exchange mail), i still get the same behavior.
    With which email client?

I have a similar problem: I switched from mac mail to Outlook 2011 as the default client, and want to switch back. Mailto links (eg from browser etc) default to Mail.  However, when I try to email a Word document as an attachment, it continues to open Outlook.  Outlook has a button in its prefs for making it the default client, but I don't see a way to turn this pref off in either Outlook or in Word.

  • My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus prints emails as landscape only; how to set to A4 as default?

All of a sudden my printer has set to landscape printing of emails; how to set it portrait as default for printing?

Hi there @OB1214 , welcome to the forums
I understand your emails are printing in landscape. If the issue is only when printing emails, there may be a setting within your email settings to change the print settings.
If all of your programs are printing in landscape, check the print settings on your computer.
Changing Print Settings in Mac OS X
Changing Print Settings in Windows 7
    I hope that helps!
If the problem continues, please let me know the details and also which OS you are running.

  • How do I set firefox as the default browser in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Editor?

Hello, I am unable to set firefox as the default browser despite multiple different attempts to do so using group policy.
    I have:
    - Set a registry command (targeted at 32/64 via a WMI query) to reset the opening command as shown below:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -osint -url "%1"
    - Set a powershell logon script to run (that does run):
    firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
Despite setting the above it seems the client computers browsers are not affected by the settings above. When the script runs or if I run the command above a UAC window pops up and requests that I accept the command (for the setDefaultBrowser) but even if I click yes as an administrator it does nothing.
Since GPO in 2012 has changed perhaps there is something that I am missing? Do I need to somehow disable Windows Internet Explorer from achieving default browser status?
Please do not reply if you will suggest that I use Internet Explorer Maintenance (since this function in GPO has been disabled since IE10)
My DC is Server 2012, my client computers are Win7 32/64.

The above reply does not take into account that I am trying to use GROUP POLICY EDITOR to make it the default browser.

  • I downloaded Ringtone from iTunes into my iPhone 6 and set it as the default Ringtone. Worked well until I had to recharge my phone. Now disappearred from my iPhone but shows in Tones when phone sync'd. How do I get to show back as default Ringtone

I downloaded a Ringtone from iTunes into my iPhone 6 and set it as the default Ringtone.Worked well until I had to recharge my phone. The Ringtone has now disappeared from my iPhone and I'm left with just the Ringtones that come standard with iPhone 6. I sync'd my phone and it shows in the Tones folder. How do I get the Ringtone back as a default Ringtone in my iPhone 6. Quite frustrating!!

In iTunes, try signing out of your Apple ID & then back in: click on iTunes Store on the left sidebar of iTunes, click on your Apple ID on the top right, sign out, sign back in.  Then try to sync your purchased music to your phone again.

  • How to set the user's Default joboptions directory?

    Hello Experts,
When we installed Acrobat Pro 8.x on our Win XP Pro systems our systems were NOT in a Windows Domain.  At that time the default location for user-created/customized joboptions files was:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings
where <Username> is the name of the LOCAL Windows user.
A few years ago we migrated to a Windows Domain and converted our LOCAL users to domain users and disabled, but did not delete, the LOCAL user's account.  We did not remove the LOCAL user's Documents and Settings directory structure either.
Our users now log into a DOMAIN rather than the LOCAL account.
    As a result of that process the user's Documents and Settings directory structure changed to;
      C:\Documents and Settings\<Username.DOMAINNAME>
where DOMAINNAME is, of course, our Windows Domain Name.
    Now we are beginning to use Acrobat Distiller joboptions and I notice that when Acrobat/Distiller goes to save a user-created/customized joboptions file the default location has remained;
      C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings
which is NOT the user who is logged in
    Acrobat/Distiller should use the Documents and Settings directory of the user who is actually logged in which is;
      C:\Documents and Settings\<Username.DOMAINNAME>\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings
This anomaly has created some confusion and appears to have created a dependency of the old LOCAL user's Documents and Settings directory preventing us from deleting it.
    Question:
How can we force Acrobat/Distiller to use the Documents and Settings directory of the logged in user (eg: the Domain user)?
In other words, how do we set the user's default joboptions directory?
    Pointers/tips/and tricks are most welcome.

    if the user is the one running the program, you can always get the home directory using System.getProperties ("user.home");
If you are trying to get the properties of another user, you could try using setProperties to change the user name first, before getiting the home directory, but it probably won't work because of the security manager. You could read the /etc/passwd file and parse the path out, but once again, the user of the code would have to have appropriate permission.

  • How to set QuickTime export setting to 1080p as default? Thank you! ;-)

    HI there,
I was wondering how to set the export settings to 1080p when exporting a video (after trimming for instance)...
It is set to "Movie" by default, I'm not to sure what resolution or data rate "Movie" format is (identical to original file)... since according to apple the other export options are:
    Thanks.

Cool, so would it be the same if I save the file as "Movie" or "1080p" once I've trimmed the original file?
No, the 1080p option would re-compress the file as a 1080p H.264/AAC file. This means the compression format may be chaged from its original compression format and that the quality MAY be reduced due to the process of recompression. Basically, it all depends on what the original compression format, settings, and quality were like to begin with. If the original data was in a low compression editing format, then recompressing the data to H.264/AAC should produce a much smaller file with little or no loss in visual quality while recompressing a high compression format may produce little or now change in the file size but noticeably reduce the visual quality. Since "quality" is a highly subjective term, you should really be running your own tests to see which output you prefer rather than asking for opinions from others here.
Also, my question was if I could change the default export settings:
Depends on what you mean by "change" the default settings. The Apple H.264 presets are context adaptive in nature. They are, within certain limits, self-adjusting depending on the video content being transcoded and the specific preset selected. For instance, small target dispay dimensions will produce lower average data rates which means the final file will be smaller but you cannot manually change the frame rate, set key frame frequency, set a/v data rate limits, create custom anamorphic encodes, manually set the profile/level combination, set the entropy mode, etc.
