Set of CDs have distortion when played in DVD drive

Hi,
I'm on an October 2011 Mac Book Pro 17". I just re-imported two CDs of music at a higher bitrate and they are terribly distorted as if they are playing at way too loud a volume. Then, I tried the disks themselves. They both sound the same, played from iTunes or from the finder window. They play fine in a CD player.
Any idea what the deal is? They must be manufactured using the same procedure that causes them to play badly on the macbook pro. I had originally imported them on another computer.
Thanks.

Did you try 'error correction' on 'import settings'?  Here a few other items from iTunes Help to ponder:
To choose import options:
Choose iTunes > Preferences, click General, and click Import Settings.
Choose an encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu.
You can listen to songs encoded in AAC or Apple Lossless formats in iTunes, on iPhone and iPad, and on iPod models that come with a dock connector. If you plan to listen to your music using a different program or MP3 player, choose MP3 Encoder.
If you want to burn high-quality audio CDs with the songs you’re importing without losing quality, choose Apple Lossless or AIFF. (Keep in mind that songs imported using this format use much more disc space.)
If you’ll be playing your songs on a computer that does not have MP3 software, choose WAV.
Choose a bit rate from the Setting pop-up menu (not available with Apple Lossless Encoder). In most cases, the default selection works well.
If you chose MP3 Encoder, choose one of the following from the Setting pop-up menu:
Good Quality: Choose to fit more songs on a portable MP3 player with limited storage capacity.
High Quality: Choose if you play music in a noisy environment. This setting creates files that are about 1 MB in size per minute of music.
Higher Quality: Choose if you plan to create your own audio CDs or listen to your music with high-quality stereo speakers.
Custom: Choose for greater control over the file size and sound quality.
Good Luck!
Ciao.

Very good idea starting your own new thread based on your specific issues and details of them. Although the subject matter may sound the same, it often gets confusing trying to exchange information with two different users at the same time in the same thread and trying to follow the discussion as the thread content gets entangled.
I just got finishing responding to your post of this thread's question's in rsayen06's thread where you initially posted.

For you convenience this is a copy of what I just wrote there:

SG asked rsayen06 several important questions to get at the core of that user's Premiere Elements issues. So far I do not see any answers to the questions. An the answers will be in those details. Although you have offered your project settings and saying that you have the same problem, they are but a small part of the troubleshooting equation.
    1. What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    2. You say you are putting pictures and music on the Timeline? How many pictures and what are their pixel dimensions? What type of music, what compression and file extension? What is the total duration of the Timeline content?
    3. When you playback the Timeline content in the Edit Mode Monitor are you looking at the rendered or unrender Timeline?
    4. When you say that you see distortion in the pictures...how are they distorted...
    a. from the point of view of pixel aspect ratio, flicker, lines, other?
    b. What do your computer resources look like in the way of installed and available RAM and free hard drive space? Are you getting any error messages associated with any of the project difficulties that you are encountering?
    c. When you get to the burn dialog, what does the Quality Area show for Space Required and Bitrate?
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thanks.

I no longer have sound when playing my clips through adobe premiere elements 12. How to I correct this problem? I have checked all audio levels and there is no mute on etc. I updated to 12.1, but still no sound in any clips. Even not on old files which used to work.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 running on? Can we assume that this audio plays back OK
on the same computer when you are using a computer player independent of Premiere Elements?
What are the properties of these clips that worked before but do not know with regard to sound
For now, I will assume that you are working on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
Have you checked the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware ASIO settings? Do you have any 3rd party audio devices incorporated in your computer environment?
Please delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if that does not work, then the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. The Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path is
    Local Disk C
    Users
    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    12.0
and, in the 12.0 Folder, is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Make sure that you are working with Folder Option "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" active so that you can see the complete path cited.
Do you have installation files or installation disc with the purchased serial number in case we need to resort to uninstall/reinstall?
We will be watching for your follow up.

  • No sound when playing burned DVD with Windows Media Player

    Hello!
I made a 10 minute movie which I burned , tested and delivered today.
But it turns out that when playing the DVD with WMP, there is no sound.
I had tested the movie playing it with powerDVD, and it worked as it should. When playing it with a normal DVD player and TV it works allright.
But I had not tested it with WMP. And sure enough, when playing it with WMP there is no sound!
The ones who will show the DVD will do it from a computer to a video projector, and maybe they don't have a "proper" DVD program installed. But I heard that there was sound when playing with "VLC" which is a relief.
But I feel the need to get to the bottom of why there is no sound with WMP? Any clues?

In NTSC-land, one has but two choices: PCM/WAV or DD AC3, which is a particular "flavor" of MPEG. In PAL-land, one does have the option of MPEG (not DD AC3) as an option, but that seems to be falling out of favor.
When MS was re-tooling WMP, they wanted to add back the functionality of commercial (pressed/replicated) DVD's, but sought to limit any burned DVD's. Do not know what the mindset is now, so much could have changed with a few iterations of WMP. I have to admit that I just do not reach for it that often.
In the Project, or Disc, menus, one can tell En which Audio Transcoding to use. As John T, suggests, I would definitely do a test with PCM/WAV, and X my fingers.
If your client(s) is/are set on WMP as the player, there is hopefully a scheme that you can get to work. Also, remember that some older versions of WMP might not play the DVD at all, unless one finds the right plug-in, that basically hacked the intended setup in those older versions. Just like when delivering to a client, and not knowing their systems' calibration, or setup, trying to cover every base in a particular player software might involve a lot of work, and prayer.
    Good luck,

  • Movies stall or hang up when playing on  DVD player

I've used both IDVD 5 and iDVD 6 but the problem continues. DVD's tend to "hang up" or "stick" at multiple scenes when playing on a DVD player. The same problem occurs on all sorts of DVD player of family and friends. This issue does not happen when playing the DVD on a computer. The movies are created in iMovie and the sent to iDVD with Themes added and then burned. I've tried disc immaages vs a burn - same result.
Any ideas what is causing this problem and how to overcome?

My iMac G5 is 2 months old, so probably not an issue. I am currently using Memorex 16X DVD's, but get the stall, hang up and freeze problem when playing on DVD players. This is not an issue playing back on computers. I started making movies on a Dell a year ago using Microsoft Movie Maker and experienced the same problem. Totally different systems, different applications...but the same issue.
All sorts of makes DVD players both in the U.S. and England and Canada have problems playing my DVDs.
I have tried saving as a disc image and the burning, but not a solution.
Is Toast better than using Apple's iDVD or disk utility to burn DVD's. Is there any way to control burn speed? Does Toast allow different burn speeds? Should I use 16X DVD's or 8X or whatever?

  • No sound when playing a DVD...

I replaced my DVD ROM with an HP dvd 1040i DVD R/RW and there is no sound when playing a DVD? I loaded the Nero 7 essentials software that came with it. My system is a HP compac dc7600 Small Form Factor. I am running Windows XP-Pro and IE8.

    Hi:
    Interesting...
Does your onboard audio work when listening to music files or playing a video on the internet?
If you have sound normally but not thru the DVD player, try this free DVD playing software. I use it all the time. See if that fixes the audio problem.

  • No sound when playing a DVD on my Lenovo 3000 N200 (0769-A44)

    Hi,
I recently got an N200 under Vista Home Premium.  Everything is doing well, except an annoying problem with PowerDVD 7 which is factory-installed.  When I play a DVD with PowerDVD, there is no sound.  With Windows Media player, MediaCenter and even MediaPlayer Classic, the sound is there.  Only with PowerDVD is there no sound.
Any hint on how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

Update 2008-04-30 : the problem only appears when playing commercial DVD that rely on AC3 codec for sound. For recorded DVD that use MPEG2-Layer2, sound is OK. Seems to be a limitation of PowerDVD OEM. However, if there is a solution ...

Thanks for sharing this. For the moment, and until someone finds a solution, I am relying on WMP and also on an opensource player that can play DVD, Media Player Classic :

Very easy to use. May be it will solve your problem with the DVD player noise ? There is also an excellent media play, that plays DVD, and that I intend to install : JetAudio 7, from Cowon.

Believe it or not, it was the FireWire drive that was the problem! I managed to successfully install Windows 7 using an external USB DVD drive!
Well I am truly staggered, I have tried this on two different MacBook Pros, with three different external USB optical drives. Don't know if you googled as I suggested but you would find hundreds of others who have found same thing. The exception is MacBook Air which works with the Apple writer, but I don't know much about this.
Were you doing any of the special workarounds with refedit etc?

  • How do I get rid of distortion when playing old CDs in iTunes?

Yesterday I imported a fairly old CD into iTunes and was disappointed to find playback of the CD was so distorted it was impossible to listen to.
    Here are some facts:
All my other music in iTunes still plays perfectly
The CD plays perfectly in QuickTime Player on the same machine from the same drive, so it's not a hardware or CD problem
A newer CD imported today into iTunes imported perfectly
A bit of research on the web suggests it's to do with the fact that the CD was manufactured a long time ago - the date on the disk itself is 1987.
I've upgraded to the latest version of iTunes, removed all iTunes plug-ins from my iMac (as instructed by one of the Apple iTunes troubleshooting pages) and I've also switched off Equalizer, Crossfade, Sound Enhancer and Sound Check, but none of these make any difference.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is it something to do with the import settings? If so, can you tell me what they should be set to?
    Many thanks

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I wasn't specific about this. I get distortion in iTunes when I play straight from this particular CD and when I import it. With QuickTime, I get no distortion when I play straight from the CD, but (I hadn't tried this before but I just gave it a go) I do get distortion when I play the .m4a file created by iTunes. So presumably it's something iTunes is doing when it processes the .aiff file from the CD.
At the moment the import settings are:
    Import using: AAC Encoder
    Setting: High Quality (128 kbps)
with the 'Use error correction...' box checked.
I've never had to touch them before. Is there a better setting to use for importing early CDs?
    Thanks.

  • CD distorts when played/ripped.  Is my external Apple CD drive faulty?

    I'm using iTunes 11.1 on a late 2012 iMac.
There's no CD drive so I use an external Apple CD drive via a USB port.
I have just tried to import a CD and found that all the tracks are heavily distorted when I play them back.  This is the first time this has happened.  I played the same CD on my hi fi and it sounds fine.  If I play the CD via iTunes and the external Apple CD it also sounds distorted.  The CD is part of a double CD album.  The first disc sounds fine on the external Apple CD and has ripped with no sound problems.
Is this a fault with the external Apple CD drive?  Should I try and replace it?
It seems strange that, so far, this has only occurred with one CD.  I have ripped plenty of other CDs with no similar issues.
    What do you advise?

got it. Just had to reboot with the CD drive connected (duh), then patchburn was able to locate it and installed it. It's working at least for iTunes. We'll see if I can upgrade to Snow Leopard when it comes tomorrow.

  • Desktop Pavilion Elite m9250f distorted audio when playing a dvd

I have a 64-bit operating system: Vista Service Pack 2 (two).  The monitor is an HP w2207h HDMI with internal speakers.
When I play a dvd with audio going to the monitor speakers, I get this nasty repeating rumbling noise that has both a low-pitched and a high-pitched component to it; absolutely no intelligible audio (music, dialog, etc.) comes through, and the video displays fine.  However, when I play the dvd using headphones, there's no problem with the audio whatsoever.  There are no other problems related to audio coming through the monitor.  I control whether the audio goes to the headphones by using the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" found in the Control Panel; when I choose "Speakers," the audio goes to the headphones; when I choose "HDMI Output," it goes to the monitor's internal speakers.
Any assistance with this vexing problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hello @Jeff77xx,
I understand that your HP w2207h monitor has distorted audio. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try different cables between your computer and monitor.
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836.
