Set Portable Home users to admins of local machines

Does any one know how to setup users using portable home directories to be Admins of the machines they login to and use.
I can manually go set them as as an admin of the machine, but this is not practical on a long term basis.
I can't seem to see a setting in wgm computer group preferences to set this option. Is it even possible?

Sorry, I seem to be having some fog on this in setting up a new server. Existing Mac computers, so local computers have users/passwords already setup. In creating users on the new server, I still want want users to access their local directories/files on their local machines - but we want access to server services too.
Question: use the same user name/passwords as local machine in setting up server users - or something different?

This is a difficult question to answer given the information available.
In general though, I would refrain from setting up both a local and a network account with the same username. It causes confusion since you never know which account you're really using, you will have problem matching UIDs (which is what's really used to track file ownership) and you will have problems when users change passwords (assuming they ever do) because they'll change it locally but it won't have any effect on the server-side services.
So I would probably look to move ALL the accounts to the network directory. You can still use local home directories in this scenario, but it will take some time to migrate all users, ensuring they maintain access to their files after their UID changes.
The above does depend on what services you're running, though, so it might not be worth the hassle, depending on those services, number of users, etc.

Trying to Get Netwrok Users Working in a Prelude to Portable Home User

Hi,
Currently the standalone server has 5 local client side users. I have created another user in WGM who has a network home folder. I can't log into him. The only other network user I have is the serveradmin, setup at the start of the process, which I can log onto with now problem.
The network user home folder is on a AFP automount share with guest access. I went to "home" on WGM and selected the AFP path (which is less than 83 characters) and successfully created the home folder. (I don't know if it is relevent but two other attemts at making home directories are still selectable in the home list, even though they no loger exist. In fact they still come up in the finder if I goto network/servers/myserver.company.co.uk/Volumes/).
My login screen is meant to show network users (having set the preference in WGM for my Mac), but only shows my local account, gueest and other. When I try to log on with the network user, it just shakes.
I did create a local account for this user, bound the account to the network account. The home folder automount didn't mount. When I manually mounted it the user's directory was there but with no access to the folders. I then noticed that if I logged into one local account the second local account I logged into would not show he server as a shared computer via AFP in the Finder (SMB showed up fine).
I suspect that I've set something up odd, but I am suspicious of the AFP automount. Any ideas?

To David - I had setup my new user as described by the documents and by you (i.e. Created user, made a "User" sharepoint with automount set as AFP "User Home Folders", used WGM to select this share for said user and created folder). The users homefolder can be seen under the share "Users". If I create a locally managed user on a client Mac and link it with this user, I can navigate to the folder under the "My Server" directory. What I wanted to do, and believe can do, is have this user as a network account, not a local one, with its home folder mapped automounting (which I thought meant that I could go to the relevant folders by using the standard icon's on the Finder - am I wrong? will I always need to go My Server>Users>username?).
To Jeff - this is the output:

DNS HostName = myserver.mycompany.co.uk
The names match. There is nothing to change.
I have set WGM for this computer to show network accounts on the login screen. It doesn't show the user I'm trying to setup.

Admin on local machines

I would like to create an Open Directory group and give them admin access on what ever machine they log on to.. How would I do this.

Local admin rights or OD admins with rights to admin computers bound to the domain produces the same effect; local administration of workstations and all the problems that entails. Putting a user into the OD admin group -even if you give them no WGM privileges- still gives them admin rights to shared/server resources that you might not want them to have. It's better to restrict them to the local machine and limit the damage -as I said before- to a workstation reimage than to allow them to access things that you might regret later. It's all a matter of trust.

What profile option need to be set to deny user from login to diff Machine

Hello all,
What profile option do i need to be set to deny user access from login on to different machine. I mean a user that logon to Machine A if he/she tries to logon to machine B. Machine A must be disconnected telling him/her that he/she had already logon to a machine before.

Adding network user as admin

Hi,
We are binding our Macintoshes to AD and I have a script that does the binding and sets the user as admin of their machine. However, they are only admin of their own machine if they are logged in to their account on the network. I have the laptops creating a local home directory and when they take it off the network and login at home, they are no longer admin.
I thought this line might add the user:
/usr/bin/dseditgroup -o edit -a $loginname -t group -n /Local/Default admin
of course there is a parameter that does equal their login name, but it doesn't seem to work.
Can someone help me with this?

thanks but we are in a WINDOWS server enviorment-not a mac-though after reading the OS X and windows server section, it appears that Virtual PC might be needed-my question is can someone take essentaily move a file from Virtual PC to the local mac client- like copy a file from a sever being accessed via virtual PC and put it on the mac desktop?

Can't create portable home directory

I recently changed a user's login in Active Directory (she changed her last name.) I changed her local home folder on her Mac to her new login, ran chown on the folder to update her home directory ownership to the new login name and everything was fine. She could log in and access her account using her new login. However, she now gets the message "Can't create portable home directory" when logging in. Nobody else on the machine gets that message. I understand what it's telling me, but I don't know where to look to fix it.

see how many occurrences her shortname has in netinfo and delete the second one. There is a conflict on the local machine w/ her userid and shortname or try removing the first acct and let it rebuild her new user acct on the local machine.

after opening an email I knew to be a phishing attempt, I forwarded it to my bank's spam/phishing email address. I did NOT click any link in the suspicious email. only forwarded it.

Setting the home page to be computer, rather than user specific

I run a computer lab and would like to set the home page to be computer, rather than user specific. Is this possible ?

Use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify default values for all users.
Place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.

Config manager client deployment script states the user is not a local admin

Guys I posted here a while back in regards to deploying config manager clients in a wan environment.One of the suggestions was to use Jason Sandy's script. I finally got around to playing around with the script however I ran into some strange problems
while testing.I am deploying this via the user side of group policy not the computer side. The script goes out and installs the client the problem is when our users click on any Citrix application the script pops up a message box stating "the user is
not a local admin". I don't see how that's the case because this group of users all have local admin rights on there systems. If I run this script as a domain admin or under the system account everything works smoothly. Citrix is the only application
that's doing this however this is a big deal because we deliver all of our enterprise apps using Citrix. So has anyone here ran into this before?

Setting Custom location for Portable Home Directories

I'm using the Portable Home Directories to create a separate home on certain desktop machines for users to use on that machine only. These are not synced either way to the server.
Problem is I want it to create the homes on a different internal hard disk. Rather than in the users folder on the boot drive.
Is this possible, and if so how?

Disable Portable Home Directories on specific hosts for all users?

Hello All,
Would it be possible to block any and all Portable Home Directory services for specific hosts? Something like "MobileAccountNeverAsk-<user>" but for the whole workstation? We have a network with both portable and stationary machines. I'd like our users to be able to use all machines, going portable on the MacBook and not bothering with syncing when logged into iMacs or Mac Pros.
The Open Directory servers are running Snow Leopard (for now) and all clients are running Lion.

Yes. The clients are Solaris 10 as well. And the domain is the same on both server and clients.
The files should be owned by real users.
If a user ssh's into the server directly, the permissions display properly. But on the clients it is nobody. Other than the permission displaying wrong, I haven't noticed any permission-related restrictions on the clients.
