Set RAW sharpening, noise to zero

Assuming that we are going to round trip to Photoshop for noise reduction and sharpening (via plugins for me), how do we make the Lightroom raw convertor NOT automatically set sharpening and noise reduction before this round trip?

  • Any chance Photoshop itself will get Camera Raw's noise reduction and sharpening?

I would love to have the noise reduction and sharpening from ACR 6 in Photoshop itself for JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files. Yes, I know I can open those files in ACR, apply noise reduction and sharpening, and then have it then open the files to Photoshop. But it would be so nice if we could do that without having to go through Camera Raw.

    Matt Howell wrote:
Yes, I am absolutely saying that the noise reduction and sharpening of ACR 6 is vastly superior to any filters in Photoshop CS5.
For those who only work only with RAW files this is a non-issue, but I sometimes prefer to use TIFF files generated by CANON DPP software or occasionally even JPEG's straight out of Canon DSLR's. Going through ACR just for noise reduction causes unnecessary color space conversions, as well as just a needlessly complex workflow.
Perhaps you should ask Canon to make DPP noise reduction better.  I also do not think is a good idea to get too aggressive with noise reduction  and sharpening when you first bring a image into Photoshop unless you only use the image single use for a particular output device.  Your better off working with a somewhat soft image till you ready for output and then sharpen for the output devive being used.  If you use strong sharpening and NR up front sharpeing again for your output device may produce unwanted sharpening and NR artifacts...  There are several third party noise reduction and sharpening plug-ins that are better then Adobe Photoshop built in ones.  Noise reduction has to be balanced too much will loose detail masking detail is important. ACR noise reduction provides masking adjustments and works well. Third party plug-ins offer offer advanced masking features also. Photoshop noise reduction filter has a basic preserve detail slider which I presumes does some kind of masking but this is not as good at ACR masking and third paty masking.  You can of course add you own masking before using photoshop noise reduction filter. Sharpening also needs masking for sarpening will sharpen noise as well as detail.
IMO your better off with third party plug-ins that are designed to be the best. They keep getting better there is no clear winner for all images. I'm been satisfied with NeatImage and I have only had to pay for two upgrades.  I had to pay for the addition the 32 bit plugin then and  for the addition a 64 bit plugin.  All other updates to NeatImage has been free of charge even the lates version 7 of the 64 bit plugin was no charge for me.

  • How to set RAW defaults for Contrast and Brightness?

When I open a RAW fole in PS Elements 8 the Brightness set to 50 and the contrast set to 25.
How to set these two values to 0 (zero) as a defaults when a RAW file opened for the first time (defaults).
    Thank you for the help.
    Leo

I think you can set presets in camera RAW (I'm at work now so I can't tell you the exact method), but setting contrast and brightness to zero gives you an ugly image, and you will most likely move the contrast up and the brightness up, so I'm not sure you are really gaining anything by having a default of 0 contrast and 0 brightness.
The defaults chosen by Adobe are reasonable.

It requires the Canon Hacker's Developement Kit (CHDK). It runs off of your SD card and does not harm your camera. Download a program called Stick-

Follow the directions and you will be able to shoot in RAW along with some other deatures not available on your camera previously.

  • Sharpening, noise reduction and blurring (general)

Sharpening, noise reduction and blurring ...
I need to read an extensive and up-to-date reference about these topics in digital imaging.
I would like to learn your book advises ...
    Thanks a lot.
    PS. It can be technical.

    Thanks Jeffrey,
I want to learn all the sharpening algorithms in the digital imaging world today (and also for NR and blurring, as they are closely related subjects with each other).
Indeed, I'm trying to understand the PS and LR tools.
And, in order to understand their tools completely,
I think I should have a solid background on these subjects ...
    For example ...
I could not understand yet how the detail slider works in LR.
It is said that it uses deconvolution algorithm ... but if you ask me it looks like a smart sharpen applied to the high frequency.
    Is smart sharpen deconvolution?
    Looks like ... but I don't know.
    Like this ...
Of course, I can use them without knowing them so much,
    Just "need for knowledge"
I read Jeff's book, but I think I need more.

  • Mls qos trust dscp??? is setting my DSCP values to zero!?

    Hi,
I was just doing some testing to ensure that the command 'mls qos trust dscp' is working on my 6509 switches before rolling out QoS.
Before adding any configuration I could see using wireshark that traffic from my Avaya 9608 handset was coming through with a DSCP value of 46 (as it is supposed to).
I then added the command 'mls qos' (at global level)
on examining the wireshark output this time, the DSCP value had been set to zero (i.e. it defaulted it to best effort)
I then expected by adding the commmand 'mls qos trust dscp' on the interface the phone is connected to that the DSCP value would would again be left alone?
does anybody know why this is happening?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Andy

  • JTable.setRowHeight(int row, int rowHeight) sets the row height to Zero

    TableModel1 model1 = new TableModel1();
    TableModel2 model2 = new TableModel2().
    JTable table = new JTable();
I dynamically switch the model of the table by calling table.setModel(model1) or table.setModel(model2).
Now, I have to show rows of variable heights in my table. But when I say table.setRowHeight(row, rowHeight), it is setting it the rowHeight to Zero. What is the problem? Does the fact that I am changing the tablemodels is causing any problem?
    Any help is really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

OK, I found two fixes to this problem:
    1. upgrade to jdk1.4
    OR
    2. When table model data is changed, replace the calls to fireTableDataChanged() with appropriate combination of calls to fireTableRowsDeleted(), fireTableRowsInserted(), and fireTableRowsUpdated().
I'm not sure if #2 will work for you since you're changing the table model entirely, but you might try #1. I got the ideas from bug 4398268. Good luck!

  • How do I permanently disable Detail (sharpening / noise reduction)?

I did this a while ago with the LR3 beta, but I forgot how I did it.
Anyway, I want to disable Detail (sharpening and noise reduction) in the right hand panel forever, so that when I import new pictures, it's disabled by default when I start developing them (so I don't have to disable it manually for each picture, which is very annoying). The reason is, I handle sharpening & n.r. as a separate step outside of LR (export as TIFF and then n.r. and sharpen).
Any hints please? I know it's simple, I just can't remember it.
    Thanks.

first select an image, then drag the Sharpening Amount and Noise slider to zero, next choose Set Default Settings from the Develop menu. When dialog opens hit the Update to Current Settings button. If you have photos from more than one camera model you'll need to repeat process for each camera. • Lightroom, Photoshop, RAW Presharpening, Noise Reduction Workflow Help

I'm tying to determine a best practices route using Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and Nik Software Sharpener and Dfine (Noise Management Software).
I shoot only RAW with a Canon EOS 30D with good quality lenses.
I import the RAW files from the CF card directly (DNG and save) into LR, add keywords, organize, etc.
However, I am now at the point where I need to determine a sensible workflow that includes these steps:
Import RAW into LR as DNG.
    Edit, as needed, in PS.
Apply RAW Presharpening (as provided in Nik Sharpener).
Manage Noise (with Nik Dfine (2.0 available in next 24 hours).
Apply usage-based sharpening prior to printing or saving final file version.
    Maintain organization in LR.
    My original plan was:
    1. Import RAW in LR.
    2. Open in PS.
    3. Apply noise reduction.
    4. Apply RAW presharpening.
    5. Save (with new version being an "Edit" copy back in LR.
    6. Maintain organization in LR.
I'm wondering, though, if I wouldn't be better off doing the basics to the files prior to LR import. Note that the Nik tools work in 16-bit mode.
This is theoretically what I'm thinking, and would appreciate other user's input:
    1. Save RAW files to location on Mac.
    2. Apply Noise reduction to RAW files with Nik software within PS (perhaps automated, perhaps batched).
    3. Apply RAW presharpening to RAW files with Nik software within PS (perhaps automated, perhaps batched).
    4. Import noise- and presharpening-adjusted files into LR, with metadata additions, etc.
    5. Open files in PS as needed, with files becoming edit versions within LR.
    Any thoughts?

    To summarize, then:
First time opening a RAW file from Lightroom, LR automatically creates a copy and appends "-Edit" to the filename. If it's a RAW file, only available option is the third option in the dialog box: "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments."
Once opened in Photoshop, any number of adjustments can be made and saved. All adjustments are reflected in the -Edit copy when previewed in back in LR.
If, later, I want to perform further PS edits on the -Edit version, I have 3 options as presented in the dialog box.
    1. "Edit Original (LR adjustments will not be visible)"
    2. "Edit a Copy (LR adjustments will not be visible)"
    3. "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments"
Option 1 will open -Edit version #1 (but it will not show any changes made in LR to the -Edit file when opened in PS)
Option 2 will create a copy of -Edit version #1 and open that new file, -Edit-2 (but it will not contain any changes made in LR to the -Edit file)
Option 3 will create a copy of -Edit version #1 and open that new file, -Edit-2 and it will contain any changes made in LR to the -Edit file
So, a typical workflow would be:
    1. Import RAW file in LR.
    2. Make adjustments in LR.
    3. If needed, open a copy (by default) in PS via LR (command-E).
    4. Adjust in PS, save.
    5. Adjusted file is stacked with original RAW file in LR.
6A. Assuming no additional edits in LR, further PS adjustments can be made to -Edit version original, keeping just 1 stacked version in LR.
6B. If additional adjustments are made to the saved -Edit version in LR, and further PS adjustments are needed, I must edit a copy of the -Edit file, ultimately resulting in a second stacked file.

  • How do you restrict the scorm reporting to only set raw value if 100

I have an issue with the LMSSetValue cmi.core.score.raw output from a Captivate 4 course published to SCORM 1.2.

What the remote user can do is to implement this policy . Allow UDP protocol on port 5060 but the only source should be west.broadcore.com.
Unfortunately, Apple routers are quite simple, and do not have the features and settings that you would need to do this.
However, if you are using a modem/router or gateway device with the AirPort Express, then you might be able to set up the modem/router to do what you need. What is the make and model number of the device that you likely call your "modem"?

Yes, it sets the size of an array to zero elements, unless the default value is defined otherwise (right click, make current value default.).
There are several ways to empty an array indicator/control.Normally I write it's value to the terminal or to a local variable. I have never used 'Reinit values to default'

  • Help suggestions RAW JPG (noise / sharpness)

    Hi,
Does anyone have a better suggestion for this picture to convert from RAW to JPG, particularly noise and sharpness.
I have put the standard JPG image (from the camera) + RAW file + XMP file at the following website WETRANSFER.COM
To download these files (12 MB) type: http://wtrns.fr/ZSrKp1UoL7P8Vw
(files available until 10 January 2013)
P1080056.JPG       =small JPG image from camera
    P1080056.RAW     =Original RAW file
P1080056.XMP     =settings ACR (Noise + Sharpness + Main tabs used)
P1080056RAWJPG=image after conversion to JPG (adobe PS)
    I use PS CS6 + ACR 7.0
    example image (JPG from camera):

thanks you for the example YAMMER P.
    questions:
Did you use the alt key for the BLACKS and WHITES in the main panel to see the limits for over- and underexposure?
How do you determine the amount CALRITY in the main panel.
How do you determine the amount DETAIL an MASKING in sharpness panel
How do you determine the amount LUMINANCE DETAIL in NOISE panel
Do you have any order for processing an image
For me...I think I know not enough of sliders like: CLARITY,  DETAIL,  MASKING,  LUMINANCE DETAIL,  LUMINANCE CONTRAST  ...... especially when these are used together
    maybe there are more suggestions?

  • Camera Raw Sharpening Settings for Landscapes

    Hi
Would anyone be so kind as to tell me if they have their own preferred sharpening (Detail) settings for sharpening landscapes in Camera Raw, and what these settings are.
Also if you have sharpening settings for other photographs I would also be very grateful for them. Maybe there is a guide out there that gives suggested sharpening parameters for the Detail tab that someone may know of?
Thanking you in advance for any anticipated help you can give me here.

The short answer is to dial in what looks right.  Sometimes that's NO sharpening.  Only experience will tell you what will work best in YOUR post processing workflow.  You have to experiment some to arrive at your own best practices.
May I suggest some additional things that I've found to be useful:
    1.  Convert to a resolution higher than the native camera photosite count.  In other words, if you're shooting a 10 MP camera, convert to the 17 MP size.
    2.  Determination of a good conversion sharpening value will depend on what you're going to do with an image.  You might, for example, choose to dial in a LOT of sharpening during conversion if you're going to immediately downsize an image greatly for web display.  Or you might dial in very little if you have a sophisticated sharpening tool you're going to use later.
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting Sidebar's Width to Zero?

Does someone know a way to set permanently the sidebar's width, and forall Finder windows?
This question has already been asked in the past and didn't receive a positive answer as far as I know. There doesn't seem to be a global variable anywhere, either in System Preferences, Finder Preferences or any of the .plist files.
There is a way to do this through AppleScript, but I wanted to know if anybody had an easier solution for this.
(BTW, the AppleScript I now have is a folder action... and it works. One must add the action to each folder though... So I still have to do some work to automatically add the action to the folder when it is created.)

Setting the sidebar to "zero"? In other words you
want to simply eliminate the sidebar in all Finder
windows? A double-click on the small dimple in the
center between your sidebar and the first column
    should do it?
Oh yes, I know about that, macjack. Or I could drag it until it is hidden ("closed"). The problem with this is that it is not a global variable, nor is it an inherited one.
So, each time I create a new folder and open it, this folder's window has a sidebar, which I may not see if I chose "Open folders in the same window" AND created a new folder inside an existing one. Drag this folder to the desktop however, or simply create a new folder on the desktop, the sidebar is there.
Each folder remembers its window's sidebar status, but this is a case by case affair, not a global one.
Since seeing the sidebar may well be a matter of personal taste or working conditions, it would be fun to have a handle on a global variable managing this. I've looked at both com.apple.systempreferences.plist and com.apple.sidebars.plist, but to no avail. There is no such global variable as far as I can see.
The Finder will allow you to choose if you want column view or not as a general rule, but nothing about the sidebars...
