Set ringtone/sms tone

Shouldn't being able to set a song as a ringtone or sms tone be a feature on this phone (the same way you can set a picture as a wallpaper)?
Will this be included in future iOS updates? It's such an obvious feature!

You can create a custom ringtone manually with iTunes on your computer for a song or sound file that does not include DRM protection, and there are a number of 3rd party utilities that provide for this with some being free. Apple has a free ringtone maker app called Ringer available via their new computer app store for the Mac. A ringtone must be less than 40 or 30 seconds in length. The Ringer app allows for choosing the segment of the selected song to be used as the ringtone and listening to the chosen segment before creating the chosen segment as a ringtone which is then placed as an available ringtone with Ringtones under Library in the iTunes source list along with being available as a custom ringtone to select under the Ringtones tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. The feee Ringer app and those like it can be used with a song or sound file that does not include DRM protection only.
There is no option to create a custom tone to be used as an SMS/MMS tone - not at the present time anyway. Since this is a user to user help forum only, no one here has any idea if this option will be included with a future iOS update and if so, when.

I have an E61, so there might be a third-party app for your phone. However, I was looking for the same and I couldn´t find any possibility. You can set up only one message tone per profile. What I did to achieve roughly the effect you want is, I have [whatever is the maximum number] different profiles and I switch between them regularly. There are third-party apps to automate that switching process. However, there´s no telling who sent you a message without looking at the phone.

I experience the same problem and it's extremely annoying. Have you found a solution yet?
Of course one might want to keep the earphones plugged in most of the time (if this is the way you prefer to answer you calls + talk on the phone) even if you're not using the phone/earphones. The ringtone does come through to to the speaker when someone calls… yet the sms signal DOES NOT and only plays in the earphones.
This means that the earphones must be unplugged after every call and then plugged in again before every call in order not to miss any sms:es! (Talk about unsafe driving e.g.!)
It would seem to be such an obvious setting/option to include in the iPhones settings. Why has Apple has completely missed this!? .... or is there a solution?

I just got an iPhone 4s, and I am unable to set ringtones that are not purchased from the store. However, I don't want to repurchase music that I have already paid for. How do I set rigntones from my iTunes library onto my Iphone 4s? I have synched the music from my computer to my phone, but I can't get get any of my songs to appear in sound settings. Help!

Problem with Iphone SMS tone.

I'm using Iphone 4 white. I have already update the software to IOS5
But i cannot set my own sms tone on iphone. What is the problem?
(My Dad is using same model as me but there's no problem, even my aunty using Iphone 3 with update ver of IOS5 is fine.)

I am absolutely in LOVE with my iPhone. It is my life, literally. However, I am truly disappointed with Apple's ability to provide us with decent text tones. I was incredibly happy when they came out with the last update that gave us the new set of tones! I found them to be childish, especially for somebody who works in business. PLEASE come out with new SMS tones; ones that aren't childish that adults can actually play without being publicly embarassed. May I suggest allowing us to make our own, like EVERY OTHER DEVICE out there? At the very least, could we edit the iPhone ringtone presets to be SMS tones? I personally like the Duck ringtone, and if I could use a single "quack" as my SMS tone, I would be one happy camper.

Ringtone messgage tone and vibration not working

For the last few days I have been reading many forums on sounds not working properly on the iphone, unfortunately no-one seems to be having the same problems as me...
My ringtones, message tones, keyboard clicks, e-mail alerts, general notifications, vibrations and the LED flashing are all not working. When I go into settings and have a quickplay of my message and ringtones they work without a problem as do alarm, youtube sounds, the ipod and podcasts, so i am assuming the speaker is fine...?
Once on a call (if I am lucky enough to be looking at the phone while it is ringing) both myself and the other party can hear one another perfectly. These issues have been going on for 3-4days but approximately 6-8weeks ago my loudspeaker did decide that it would also be another mute setting, although I can hear the other person cannot.. this doesn't bother me I am just not sure if it is related so thought it worth mentioning.
I have tried a soft reset (home and power button), reset all via settings and a restore via itunes all with no luck. I have also read of other people with similar reasons have inserted and removed headphones several times, and even cleaning the headphone jack, again none of this working.
I have checked the flip button at the side of the phone (above the volume) is not set to vibrate, though have since noticing these problems have tried moving it and feel no vibrations when set to vibrate.
ANY ideas on what to try next would be soooooo grateful! Thanks in advance.

General
Accesability
Assistive touch - switch to on.
using the assistive touch (the white circle that now appears on your screen), go to:
Device
Then tap the bell (mute) icon.
This should fix the issue. To test it (without having to wait for someone to call you) write an SMS and see if the keyboard clicks are audible.
I hope this solves your issue like it did mine. If it doesn't maybe try tapping that mute icon again and/or flicking the actual mute bottom on the left hand side of your iPhone.

Problem with SMS tone

Hi I have a problem with my iPhone..
Sometimes when i receive an SMS, the Sound that I have allocated to play when I receive the SMS does not play..
This only happen sometimes, and I cant explain why its not playing..
All the settings is correct (Volume is up , The SMS tone is set, Its not on Silent)

they are fixing the apps issue, i have never heard of their being no ringtone showing on ur iphone or itunes, have u downloaded itunes 8 as u will need that for the update, sounds like alot of your probs should be fixed, they are fixing the battery life issue i still dont use my iphone with 3g on as i have no service so im waiting for a major fix for that...well lets hope its all fixed by this update and nothing is screwed up by it as im sick of the firmware screwing up a part of the iphone, only good stable firmware was 1.1.4

Settings > Sound > Text Tone.
That sets the default sound. You can also set a specific tone for each person by placing an entry containing the person's phone number in the AddressBook and specifying the tone there.
What iOS does not currently support is adding new text tones to the list provided (like you can do with ringtones). If you Google "iOS 5 text tone" you'll note several respectable news outlets have stated that custom text tones appear to be part of that.

IOS 4.2 SMS tone (possible) bug

Has anyone else noticed that there are SMS tones you can't remove for sent SMS texts? Another user and myself updated to iOS 4.2 this afternoon, both of us using iPhone 4's, and now both of us are stuck with outgoing text tones.
Anyone else experience this or notice this? Even with all tones set to 'off' it still makes a tone for outgoing.

I am ready to throw my phone at the wall I am so frustrated by the annoying whooshing sound it emits after I send a text message. Upon calling Apple Tech Support I learned that there is no control setting to fix or alter the sound made once a text is sent.
I want to individually control what happens when I receive a call, receive a text, and send a text. I have no idea why they are all interconnected. This is a basic phone necessity that has been completely overlooked by Apple.
Those of you who have this same problem I encourage you to post about it so the problem is addressed in the next update. For a short term fix just set the phone to vibrate, you lose the ability to hear calls, but gain sanity that would otherwise be lost putting up with the whoosh sound.

Thanks On my phone, these are the options under Menu>Settings & Tools>Sound Settings>Alert Sounds: 1. TXT Message 2. Multimedia Message 3. Voicemail 4. Emergency Tone 5. Missed Call . And under Service Alerts: 1. ERI 2. Minute Beep 3. Call Connect 4. Charge Complete 5. Software Update. So nothing there for the calendar. And options from the calendar that I can see are Add (here you can change the tone for one event or recurring event, but not set a default tone for the event alarm), View (gives you the options of viewing an existing event in more detail, adding a new one, and the same choices from the Options list on the first screen where you are viewing the entire month), and Options (1. lets you view weekly/monthly, 2. Go To Today 3. Go To Date 4. Search 5. Erase All 6. Erase All Old 7. Send. So as far as I can see, there's no way to do it. I have been through all the Settings and Tools menus... and the Events menu. But...I have just discovered that if I delete ALL my alarms and change the Ringtone for the first alarm I set, that ringtone becomes the default ringtone. I will try deleting ALL my events and starting fresh with a new tone and see if that works!

Please tell me how to set ringtones/images/photos to individual contacts/numbers. If you have more than one number for a contact can you set up each one separately. ie home/mobile/office etc.

to perform all the mentioned operations(expect assigning different tones to different numbers of the same contact,which isn't possible,as already indicated in the previous post)you need to move the contact to the phone memory. now what you can do is copy all the contacts to the phone memory as well.then after that you can set all the options for the your contacts.
but, after copying the contacts to phone memory,the contact list will have two entries to the same contact(of both the memories).If you don't want them in that manner then you can configure the current memory in Contacts->Settings and set that option as 'Phone'.But this will now be the default memory for your new contact,so be careful!! Still any doubts??

You would have to create the ringtone. Google will find several ways to do this.
You can only buy ready made ringtones from the ringtones asections of the itunes store on your iphone.

My custom set ringtones are not working

Just recently my custom set ringtones for someone have stopped working and instead the basic tones I have set for the phone are being used instead. I recently synced my phone to itunes with the back up assistant and this happened after that. How do I fix that?

Have you checked these two points?
1. Is the ringtone still set in the contact info in Contacts/Phone?
2. Is the ringtone still available on the iPhone?
If one is no just restore (1. select the tone again, 2. sync the ringtone again)
