Set TonerSaveMode=On as default printing preference, drag drop PDF to dock

Printing large number of PDF documents by dragging and dropping them to the printer dock icon causes the documents to be printed with default settings (TonerSaveMode=Off) according to (com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.BrotherMFC7840W.plist, com.apple.print.lastUsedSettingsPref Dictionary, com.apple.print.preset.settings Dictionary, com.apple.print.JobInfo.PMJobName String) despite:
1. whether "use last settings" are configured in the printing dialog of Preview.app
2. and despite wether the printer itself using its web interface is configured to have Toner Save Mode to be on.
And as it is not allowed to overwrite "default" settings preference, as a result there is no way to set default preferences for a Mac OS X configured printer, other than the paper size.
Is there a way to set a default preference TonerSaveMode=On for a Brother MFC-7840 device (for instance by manually editing the printers default preferences .plist, could you then point me to the exact file to edit)?
PS - The only goal is to drag and drop files to the printer its dock icon, and print these PDF documents with "TonerSaveMode=On" (or "Duplux" or "UsingSpecificTray" or "Resolution300Dpi" etcetera.)

Thanks for pointing me to Cups Admin on localhost:631
The only problem was that the username/password combination would not be accepted. Cups error_log returned: cupsdAuthorize: pam_authenticate() returned 9 (authentication error)!
My short username was easily found with terminal command > whoami
After temporary setting my password to an 8 character length numeric value, the user/password combination was finally accepted and default "Toner Save" = on could be set.

  • Cannot Drag & Drop in the dock or double click to open files anymore

Since installing OS X 10.4.3 then .4 I can only open files through the appropiate
application using OPEN under FILE in that application. Drag & drop into the dock app only gives a momentary flash and a double click on the file/document does nothing. Any ideas? It worked fine in 10.3

I have a similar issue, but my case is pretty odd (it is to me, anyway). I am in a largely Windows-based company, but work in a small Mac-based department. We recently relocated into new offices, and the new environment is run on a Windows 2003 server (our old offices were on a Windows 2000 server).
My issue is that when I try to double-click an icon, drag an icon to the Dock, or open with keyboard shortcuts, the application launches, but no file opens. The only way I can open a file is via File>Open through the application.
My computer is a PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.4 -- oddly, our 10.3.x users do not have this issue. And I never had any problems on the W2K server. So I'm sure there's something with the new 2003 server and 10.4, but I've searched through the threads and didn't see anything exactly like my issue.
Any thoughts? Are there server settings that may have been missed by our IT department? Or is there something I need to set on my Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Any way to override default printer settings into a PDF

Hi -- I work for a large organization that has lots of computers and printers and prints a lot of forms and documents.  We are moving towards more digitization of documents and records including printing forms as needed as opposed to having large sets of forms onhand.  This should save us a lot of time and money once complete as these forms often change and the old process would be to then trash much of these documents and re-print for just one change.  The majority of our printers do have letter & legal trays as well as duplex support, however due to the vast number of users the default printer settings tied to each user and/or computer may be slightly different.  While standardizing all the printer settings across all users/computers would be one solution, we don't anticipate doing this as depending on the job peformed the different settings may be more preferable / advantageous for that user.
As such the other solution I can think of is to hardcode the specific printer settings needed to correctly print a large document into that PDF file which may differ from that computer's print settings.  For example, the default computer print settings may be to print on just 1 side but duplex would be encoded / scripted directly into the PDF so IRREGARDLESS of the computer/printer settings this document would always print duplexed.
Is there anyway to do this?  I would need to do more than just duplexing -- ie some form sets would need to be both duplexed and 'fit to printable area' whereas some would need to be only on one page and 'shrunk to printable area', etc, etc.  Our current practice is to insert a 1 page coversheet at the front of each document with the printer settings that need to be used for that form set, however this has been difficult for some users to do and has caused unnecessary time with our IT troubleshooting form printing.

    Hi Brandon,
You can use the Print Presets in Acrobat for that purpose. Please follow the steps below:
    1. Open the PDF in Acrobat
    2. Open Document Properties dialog (using Ctrl + D)
    3. Select the "Advanced" tab
    4. In the "Print dialog Presets" section, you can choose DuplexMode as well as Page Scaling for this document.
Please let us know if this works for you

  • How to fix missing entries in the printing preferences of Adobe PDF

    Hi all,
we are on Acrobat Pro 8 (8.16) as part of the CS3 Design Standard package.
A colleague of mine is missing some of the entries in the printing preferences of the Adobe PDF printer:
The Adobe PDF Security dropdown is empty and he can't set the Printer to ask him where to put the final pdf files ("Prompt for Adobe PDF filename").
I already tried repairing Acrobat - didn't help.
Has anyone some ideas what to do?
    Many thanks,
    Mike

    This is getting nasty:
After reinstalling Acrobat (via the add CS3 components function in "add or remove software") it wants to be activated (!?!) and doesn't accept the CS3 key any more.
So I will probably have to reinstall the whole CS3.
Is there any way to make sure that every trace of the old installation gets deleted before I start?

  • How to change the default print template for broadcast PDF Export

    Hi,
I have currently designed a print template for printing purposes and use this as the template for the print button(Export to PDF),if i were to click on this button the output pdf is the desired PDF. But if i were to broadcast the template with output format as PDF it picks the layout of the current template, how do i set broadcast to pick up the print template also???
Further how to insert a page break in a PDF print template.

    Hi Nagesh,
    These setting are for
    1.Adhoc Template for Queries
    2. Adhoc Template for reports designed through report designer
    3. Template for query precalculation
    4. Template for displaying broadcasting wizard.
When we use broadcasting from query designer  to email PDF's the system uses 0QUERY_TEMPLATE_BROADCAST_PDF.
From WAD the system uses the current template layout as PDF Layout.

  • Can you set Reader X's default Print orientation?

    Hello -
We have a myriad of web docs provided in PDF form.  These are launched in a browser window using IE9 or 10.  These are various and sundry parts inventory lists and we are constantly calling them up to print, then dismising them until the next context based request.  IOW, the parts lists are not static, otherwise I'd tell everyone to just keep the one they get up on the screen.  They are produced by our corp HQ so we have no control over how they are authored.
When these docs appear in the browser window, they are in landscape mode (or at least appear to the eye to be).  When we print however they're printing in portrait mode -UNLESS- you remember to select landscape in the print dialog window before you hit <OK>.  So, why don't we just remember to do that?  We're humans, I guess.  And the other thing is the authoring office completely disables all Reader menus, toolbars and other screen elements.  You do get a small bar area near the bottom with controls to zoom in/out and print, etc.  So I was trying to attack this by calling up Reader at the workstation level to see if I could adjust.
I've looked extensively through Reader's excellent menu system trying to find a way to set Reader to always print landscape.  Of course, I can't find it.  Then it occurred to me that perhaps this is not a Reader issue and perhaps is a printer driver issue.  However, if we default the printer driver to landscape then we're facing the same problem with other applications that require printing like MS Word and so forth.  So that's not a real good option.
So, let me ask then if Reader does or does not have a default setting that can be set and that can persist session to session?  Even if I did this once a day, it would be better than having to hear the 'Gosh darn it' arias all throughout the day!  How about a launch script or launch switch?  Anyone know of one?
    Thanks, all.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 not able to be set as default printer

I've just installed the Officejet Pro 8600 on my wireless network.  It was added correctly using WPS andindicated no problems found on the wireless network test results that the printer did. All items were listed as 'PASS'. It is showing up in the device and printers on my Windows7  64-bit machine. When I right-click on the printer icon, it does not allow me any option to set it as my default printer and it also doesn't show up as an available printer from any application to print (like from MS Office). The device driver was auto-located by Windows, so there is also no option for me to update it. Anyone have a solution for what I need to do to get the printer available to actually print too?? Thanks.

    Hi,
I had a smiliar problem for the same printer that I bought just yesterday.
Despite numerous troubleshooting tasks, I was still unable to make the printer my default one.
    I tried
    - switching from wireless to USB connected
    - uninstalling and reinstalling

and clicked on Printer Support under Additional Help (down at the bottom)
    - choose North America

DO NOT  Enter a product name/number

Or automatically find your products and solutions - click on START button
you may need to ALLOW your antivirus software to scan your computer and after a minute or so you will get a response like this:

  • Default printer setting

I have a Canon printer set up as the default printer on my Mac. I also have a Dymo label printer that I use occasionally.Althought the Canon printer is the default printer whenever I choose to print from the Dymo printer (using the printer dialogue box - not changing any default settings) the computer never defaults back to the Canon printer. The next time I print, I must remember to open the dialogue box and change it back to the Canon. I usually forget and end up running out a bunch of expensive labels as the computer trys to print a document to the label printer.
Is there another setting that actually makes the computer default back to the default printer after a certain period of time?
I am using Mac OS 10.7.4 and have the latest firmware and software updates for both printers.

Before I print anything I have a question. When
printing and selecting a printer does if no printer
is selected does it take the default printer from the
computer being used? Depends on the application.
Some desktop apps allow you to choose from among all the printers installed on the client machine.
This assumes that you have a printer installed on the computer in question. Do you? One is designated as the default. If the app doesn't prompt you, chances are good that it's using the default. (But it's not guaranteed.)
    Our office has over 200
printers and unfortunately this is the first time we
have had to print anything. Typically it is
    paperless. Thanks for the help
E.C.I'll assume these are networked printers and not attached locally to a particular machine. Did you add the printer you wanted by searching on the network for a shared server?
200 printers in a paperless office? That's a lot of equipment sitting around doing nothing.
What operating system are you talking about?
What does any of this have to do with Java?

  • Setting default printer reverts back to old printer on reboot

Using Windows XP and my HP Officejet Pro 8000, I can set in as my default printer and the next time I boot the computer it shows my old 5600 printer.  Any suggestions?

I think I solved the problem.  Apparently the HP Digital Imaging program (hpotddo1.exe) will lock the computers printer selection onto one printer.  In my case it was the wrong printer.  By disabling the program, my computer will now accept the default designation and stay on it through reboots.  !!  RodCart

    How to fix this?
    thanks

Yes, you need your own copy of WinXP (I used the one that came with VPC) but I'm afraid I have some good news/bad news to report. The good news is that WinXP does run a bit faster than VPC did on my dual processor G4 - the bad news is that XPs hardware detection DOES NOT - and I could find no way t force it - to recognize any USB or Firewire devices. Because I use Windows primarily to connect to USB GPS devices, this was a real letdown (and would be to users who need to, oh, I don't know, PRINT from Windows).
I'd love to hear from anyone has Windows actually functioning under OpenOSX Wintel - the website only goes as far a getting it to install and running Explorer (which I was able to do). I also had numerous keyboard problems: sometimes Windows would accept no input from the keyboard, sometimes it would reverse the caps lock key (on produced lowercase letters, off all uppercase). It also does not recognize the Apple Mighty Mouse as a two-button mouse. A number of these problems were - somehow - fixed by VPC which I never had a problem with when it came to USB devices (at least it DOES recognize a 'network card' and I can use Internet Explorer - whoopee!).
I'm going to play with this some more before throwing in the towel but I'm not so certain that I'm going to work towards the dual boot solution until I hear that Windows and Windows apps actually function - like being able to print or recognize a USB device.
Just getting Windows to install and run is of little good if it doesn't actually provide simple functionality.
I may copy and paste my original post in the Windows compatibility forum - see if any of those folks have found a working solution,

  • Default printer does not appear in custom-sized templates

I posted this question in the 'Pages' community, but received no replies, so I am possting it again here.
I now have an Epson XP-750 printer-scanner. I have set it as my default printer in System Preferences. When I create a document in Pages whose paper size is one of the standard ones catered for by the XP-750 or open a previously saved one in one of those sizes, or I open a document from one of the templates provided by Pages, the printer shown in Page Setup is always the XP-750. But if I create a document in a custom size (such as a 9 cm x 14 cm correspondence card), Page Setup shows 'Any Printer' until I re-set it to 'XP-750', and even if I save the document or save it as a template and then re-open it, the printer is always shown as 'Any Printer'.
Is there any way of making the XP-750 'stick' as the printer shown in Page Setup even in these custom documents?

Thanks for this, Joe Bailey. I am ignorant of programming and cerainly wouldn't dream of trying to make such a modification. But the interesting thing is that if I create a document in MS Word and give it a custom size, the printer's name and paper size are retained after saving, closure and re-opening, though they are not retained in Pages.
I want to use Pages for my custom-sized correspondence cards because the database that I use for mail merge is in Numbers. I suppose I could export it as Excel and use that with a Word correspondence card, but it all gets a bit messy, especially when it comes to updating the database, and will be a lot of work, as I have several such cards with different letter-heads, etc.
I contacted Epson about this problem, and they said it was a matter for the application in which the custom-sized document was created — i.e. Pages in my case — so according to Epson it is not a matter of the printer driver.

  • HELP Please!!  Changing Printing Preferences

    Can anyone assist me?....
How do I code in Java to set the printing preference to landscape.
At the moment when u go to print, for example, in eclipse, you go to File -> Print. In the "print" dialog you can select "preferences" (or something similar). Another dialog opens up showing the printing preferences. In that dialog it has "portrait" as default...
but how can I code it so that "landscape" is the default preference rather than portrait...
any help will be much appreciated. I've tried googling it but haven't found anything relevant which can help me.
    Cheers!

    Hi
I meant creating a program using Java to set the default printing preference to Landscape. I'm writing a plugin program using Java for eclipse. So when the user uses the plugin program and they want to print they can just go to File -> Print -> OK and the printout will be in Landscape. At the moment when you go to File -> Print -> Preferences the page orientation is set to Portrait. What I want to know is how to set it to Landscape (as the default option) using Java coding without the user having to set it in the print option.
Hope I've cleared the confusion up.
    Thanks

  • Default Printer Settings

Am just setting up my first Mac. Have connected a Brother 5150D printer which works fine both on Mac and on wireless network but..... as most of my printing is duplex (to save paper) I want to set this as the default and get two-sided printing each time I click the print icon in Office Mac or any other application. I have set up the printer and gone to http//:127.0.0.1.631/printers and set the parameters to duplex - no tumble and set the duplex option in printer preferences/layout. Despite these default settings when I click the print icon it always prints single sided. The only way I can get duplex printing is to click file/print/copies & pages/layout/2 sided/long edge binding and hit print. I have restarted the Mac after changes, recycled the printer, deleted and reinstalled the printer but the icon default seems to remain insistent on printing single sided
    Help please!!

    Hello dgcornett,
Depending on which printer that you have, the software interface to change the default print settings could vary. You can click the link below to view steps to change the settings on the Photosmart 7510 series printer, which is a recently released printer.

If you can specify the printer that you have, more specific steps can be posted.
