Set up a RAID 1 with four Hard disks with DiskUtility

I have a Sonnet Fusion-500 RAID enclosure with four hard disks of 500 GB (2TB total) connected to a Power Mac G5 (2x2.3 GHz, 2GB RAM, MacOSX 10.4.8) through a Sonnet Serial ATA PCI express card (Tempo E4P model). Since I have a total capacity of 2 TB, I would like to set up a RAID 1 (mirrored) and combine the four drives in a final working volume of 1GB, (and the remaining 1GB in the mirror volume). I've been trying to setup the RAID with DiskUtility, but I cannot get a working volume of 1 GB (only 500 GB -the size of a single disc-). Can anybody please give me some help in setting up this type of RAID?
The four 500 GB discs are OK, since I can create a RAID 0 (~ 2 TB) or initialize them al individual drives without problems.

Glad I could help.

  • How do I set up a RAID array with an external hard drive?

Im trying to backup my hard drive onto a 250 GB external hard drive (connected by Firewire) via a RAID 1 configuration. What is the best way to do this?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Intel-based, Windows XP Pro is installed via Boot Camp

There are times when a mirror is fine. SoftRAID in their example of uses, has a situation with someone who doesn't backup, has a laptop (where failures seem higher) and might also want to be able to take the external mirror and take it with them.
One backup is never enough. What if something goes wrong during the backup? power failure or crash? the backup is now corrupt.
Having a mirror and a 2nd copy would be fine. And you can do that. I find DVDs have been too small and slow in the past to use regularly, I use disks, and burn a DVD of important stuff on a 3 month or longer basis, and some stuff is even less.
so while there is always going to be "mirror raid is not a true backup mantra" it is still useful for what it does. Even if it is instant and copies the good and bad. Just don't rely on it as your ONLY backup, you should have another disk drive as well (and DVDs).
Also, FW400 is not a speed daemon - 35MB/sec or less is not uncommon.

  • How can I recover files from an hard disk that DiskUtility cannot rapair?

When I push the power button of my PowerBook, while the computer is rebooting and you see the gray screen with the apple, the black screen appears saying that I have to restart the computer!

Of course, I didn't try to format it, because the HD contains data that I don't want to lose.
I tried "Data Rescue II", and I can see and scan the HD, but it seems that I can only recover deleted files...
Any suggestions on how to repair the HD without losing the files?
Or a software suggestion that at least lets me first recover the files. If I recover the files, then I will try to reformat the HD.

Before giving up I would try Alsoft Disk Warrior which may be able to fix the problem:

If this doesn't work out you can usually recover most of your files with Prosoft's Data Rescue II:

  • Setting up a RAID 0 between the Mini's internal HD and an external

Would it be possible to set up a RAID 0 between two hard drive, one being the internal drive of the MacMini and the other being an external firewire drive?
Would these two drive have to be configured outside of the computer in external enclosure and then one transplanted into the mac mini, or will the operating system allow this to be set up between the two drive?

Yes you can RAID the internal Mac mini 2.5" hard drive with a FireWire external, but a striped RAID set is always limited by the speed of the slowest drive and the size of the smallest drive.
As such I would not expect much of a performance gain and you would have to erase your internal drive to create the striped RAID set while booting from a 3rd drive to setup the RAID0.
Using a FW boot drive will give you increased performance. You can see details here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/max/
Or if you really want to speed up the Mac mini read about the AMUG Super-mini project which uses 3.5" SATA hard drives. It was tested in single and RAID0 configurations on the internal ATA/100 IDE bus of the Mac mini

  • HARD DISK DRIVER ISSUES WHILE INSTALLING WINDOWS 8

I am trying to install windows 8 on my PC, but it is asking for hard drive drivers. I have installed windows 8 before with no issues on the same PC with same configuration, but now I am facing these driver issues. Currently  I am running Win7 as i cannot
    reinstall Win8.
    Config:
    Gigabyte Motherboard 945G with Intel Core2duo8400 3ghz,
    Intel(R) 82801G(ICH7) FAMILY CHIP SET,
4gb Ram, Nvidia graphic card, Seagate hard disk 160Gb.

    Hi,
I doubt that the hard drive is either a SATA drive or in a RAID setup, you might need to install RAID controller drivers or SATA driver during the installation.
I also suggest you refer to the following link and check if it can give some hints.

  • HD Video and External Hard Disks

    Howdy.
I'm having a strange problem with HD video footage (1080p from various sources) and playing it back from external hard disk.
    Here is the situation:
I have a new 17" Macbook Pro; if I play 1080p video directly from the internal drive, it plays with no problems at all.
I have a 1TB USB 2 external drive; 1080p video also plays back fine from this drive.
I also have 2 G-Drive's; both with a capacity of 1TB each and connected via FireWire 800 and when I try to play 1080p footage from either of these drivers, the video is very stuttery.
Now, it would be easy to say "well the G-Drives but be operating slowly", but if I copy files between them and the internal drive, the files copy very quickly; much quicker infact than copying files to the USB2 drive.
So for all transferring of files the G-Drives are much quicker than the USB2 drive.
To make matters even stranger, if I connect the same G-Drives to the MacPro we have at work, the 1080p video plays back fine.
So it seems to be the combination of my MacBook Pro + the G-Drives that dont like playing 1080p video (since the drives on another computer play fine, and my macbook pro plays the same video fine from both the internal and usb2 external drives).
    It's got me baffled.
Anyone have any idea whats causing this?
    Thanks.
    James.

The USB drive is older but for my first tests, was actually NTFS formatted (since Id been using it on my windows PC); the files played fine even with the NTFS formatting and over 200GB of files on the drive.
I then wiped the drive and formatted as Mac OS Extended, transferred a couple of video files and played them, again they played back fine.
The thing is, if I simply move/copy files between internal drive and fire wire drive; and from internal drive to USB drive, the fire wire drives are clearly much faster.
So it's not like the fire wire drives are running slow, the problem is only in the playback of the files.
Also, as I have 2 of these fire wire drives, 1 drive is empty appart from the video files im trying to play (less than 200MB), the other drive has about 200GB on it and the video doesn't play properly on either of them.
But as i said, if I simply connect the drives up to the MacPro we have in the office, the videos play back without a hitch.
So it seems the problem is specific to playing video back from the g-drive in combination with the macbook pro (general file operations happen very fast); individually if separated and used with another device they work fine.
    EDIT:
    Forgot to mention.
I also tried setting the 2 fire wire (G-Drives) up as a striped raid.
Again, when moving/copying files between said raid and the internal hard disk, the transfers were very quick; but the video files (which come from various sources, i.e canon 7d slr camera, gopro HD helmet cam etc) all fail to play smoothly even from the raid.

  • Designjet 1050C Plus Compatible EIO Hard disks

Which EIO hard disks are compatible with the Designjet 1050C Plus Plotter?

    Hey guys
THanks for much response. More specifically, it is K7N2G-L.
Here is a quotation from the manual:
Hard disk RAID connectors: IDE3, SER1&SER2(optional)
    Controlled by Promise 20376
The mainboard also provides optional dual high speed Serial ATAinterface ports, SER1&2
Each supports 1st generation serial ATA data ratesof 150 MB/s
Both fully compliant with Serial ATA 1.0 specs
Each SATA connector can connect to one hard disk device
And here is the preceding page on ATA hds:
The mainboard has a 32-bit enhanced PCI IDE and ultra dma controller. that provides PIO mode 0`4, Bus Master and Ultra DMA function.
You can connect up to four hard disk drives, CD-Rom, 120MB Floppy and other devices.
Pls help me understand the above: 4) This means that in total you can connect up to four different devices, hds among them.
So If you have a CD-Rom, only 3 HDs (ata or sata) can be connected, right?
    and one more
    5) Is SATA much better than ATA? If yes, 6) Will it improve performance of WinXP significantly if I install it on SATA?
The other option is to use such an additional sata for wav samples (I make music on sample-based programs).
    7) which one is better sata for windows or sata for samples?

    Hi Guys,
Im using oracle 8i 8174 on windows 2000 server.
Suddenly out of four hard disks one of them corrupted. No RAID configuration.
This disk is F: drive partition only and having a datafile.
Windows 2000 server is working fine , but database is not opened due to failure of hard disk.
I have export of one day back.
I want to recover datafile file from export which is in corrupted hard disk.
    Pls guide me.

no redundancy, no physical backup and you have lost complete drive/partition.
But better having something than nothing, you got export dump created from last night.
You need to create a new database and just do the import using last night export dump file.
Also, ZIP all the existing database files, and keep them safe, if you are manage to repair the disk, could be useful to get the data for a day..

I have a perc 4e/di Raid Controler and 3 hard disk off 73 Gb
    Thanks for Advance.

Solaris 10 does not play well with certain raid controllers shipping on the Dell 2850s.

You may want to look at the HCL entry for the 2850
    From http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/systems/details/806.html
    Stephan Sachweh writes,
If you have a DRAC4/I board inside you should upgrade the firmware to v1.20 and disable the VIRTUALCDROM and VIRTUALFLOPPY while installing Solaris.
Also you need a patch for big drives if you have 73GB Seagate harddisks.
In your Solaris 10 boot floppy, edit Solaris/bootenv.rc, append this line to the end of this file: setprop acpi-user-options 0x4 ---

    Hi,
I'm using iPod 30GB. I tried to set my iPod to be an external hard disk by following the steps in the support. Although, I tried a hundred times, I'm still having trouble that my iPod doesn't appear in the Windows Explorer on my PC. Could you tell me why? Thanks for your help ahead.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.

  • Building a Raid-0 with two out of four internal drives?

    Hello everyone
I have four drives in my MacPro:
    1) OS+Apps
    2) Virtualization
    3) iTunes
    4) empty
My iTunes library fills drive 3 and I am close to having a full drive.
I would like to 'span' my iTunes library over to drive 4 and was thinking about building a Raid-0 on drives 3) and 4).
Can I do this without any additonal software and hardware?
Do I simply do that in Disk Utility?
Can you foresee any limitations to that setup (except for fault tolerance)?
I assume performance is also sufficient as after all it is only for iTunes.
I am not worried about drive crashes as I can back-up the spanned drives externally
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

Quick follow-up information from the disk utility help menu:
"Using several disks as a single volume with a concatenated RAID set
If you need to set up two or more disks or volumes to work together as a single, large volume, you can create a concatenated RAID set. You can even increase the size of a concatenated disk set after it's been created by dragging more disks to it in Disk Utility. This RAID set is helpful if you have a file, such as a database, that's larger than any of the disks you have. Or you may need to create a mirrored or striped RAID set with one large disk and two smaller disks.
If you booted your computer from a disk that has multiple partitions, you cannot create a RAID set that contains partitions from your boot disk. To create a RAID disk that contains partitions from that disk, you must boot your computer from another disk or the Mac OS X Install disk first.
You cannot remove individual disks from a concatenated disk set."
So it seems I can add disks whenever I want but once added I can't remove them...

As stated above. I get this when I try to resize my HD. Was having issues with BootCamp so I removed it and got this.
