Set Up Airport Extreme with Static IPs and DHCP same time
I have Verizon Fios to my Business with 5 Static IP Address. One of them must be assigned to the Airport Extreme Base Station. I have 5 iMacs needing internet connection of which 2 need to use a static ip,( Filemaker Server and my Mac OS X Web Server). I also use 2 iPhones with a custom App accessing that FileMaker Server via the internet too. I want to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station to have those 2 iMacs connected with static ips , which must NEVER CHANGE, via an ethernet cable and all the rest wireless with WiFi. Do to the size of my building I also want another Airport Extreme or Express to just expand the range from the Base Station for the wireless connections only. Looking at the Airport Internet Settings I only see 3 options for Connection Sharing, "Share A Public IP Address", "Distribute a range of IP addresses", "Off (Bridge Mode)". I'm thinking I need to give 1 IP Address to the Base Station, 2 ip addresses to my servers, then 1 ip address to share for my wireless DHCP connections. The additional Airport set to Off(Bridge Mode) to expand the base station. Please advise on how I would set up that base station to do this.
With respect to expanding the base stations range, in the Base stations Wireless Settings I would click to select "Allow this network to be extendeded". Then what settings would I need in the Additional Airport?
Note: Both AirPorts would have to be 802.11n models in order for this to work. The additional AirPort would need to be configured to extend the Extreme. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless > Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network)
Would that NEED to be connected to the base station via ethernet cable or will it pick up the base station wirelessly?
Using the "extend" feature is intended to expand the wireless range of an AirPort with another wirelessly. You would not need to connect them by Ethernet. In this configuration, the additional AirPort would be in bridge mode and will pass through the IP information from the other base station's DHCP service.

I'm having a house built and all of the wiring for TV, phone, and internet will be centralized in a closet. The cable modem can be placed there as well. In one room in the basement I want to use my Airport Extreme for my iMac and USB external hard drives. In another location of the basement, I'd like to set up a Time Capsule for another desktop and USB printer. If the cat5e comes out of the wall at each location, I "think" I need a router at the closet location. I also thought I might need an Airport Express upstairs on first or second floor to boost signal for my laptop. The house isn't that big so maybe that's overkill. So beyond the router question, do I want to set up a roaming network and have the Airport Express connected via ethernet or just wireless if the thought is that I need this? Finally, if I should connect cable modem to router to Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc., in what order and ports does the equipment get connected? It would be best to position the cable modem and main router in the central location like the closet if possible. The other devices would connect via ethernet to the wall jacks in each room.
If you could setup a "roaming" wireless network as you mention, this will give you better wireless performance and coverage. This is the way commercial establishments like airports, businesses, etc. are configured for wireless.
The order of connection would go something like this: ethernet connection > cable modem >main router>devices. Devices could be computers, routers, a backup device, etc. Since the Extreme has only 3 LAN ports for ethernet connections, you will also need to plan to install an "ethernet switch" near the location of the main router to provide enough ethernet jacks. If you are planning to use DirectTV, etc or your audio/video devices require ethernet connections (most new products do for updates and extra features), be sure to plan for that as well.
Make sure that CAT5e or CAT6 wiring is run so you will be able to take advantage of faster gigabit speeds.
Finally, it would be a good idea to work with an IT specialist to go over your plans to make sure all the bases are covered. This would be money well spent. -

When Charter Tech goes to your site, have them connect the modem up, but do not connect the modem to your iMAC or MacBook Pro. What you want to do is connect the Airport Extreme to the iMac or MacBook Pro first with the Ethernet Cable. You have to do this to configure via Airport Utility to set up the Base Station Name & Base Station Password.
You will then create/configure a Wireless Network, create your Wireless Password that will be entered on each of your Devices, example, Apple Tv, your iPhone, etc., you want to allow access to your Wireless Network you are creating.
Wireless Security will be -> WPA/WPA2 personal or just WPA2
Enter the Wireless Password you want
Verify the Wireless Password (enter it again)
After it is created you will see it on the Airport Utility window with the name you created for it and to the left, will be a Dot (circle that will be yellow).
Next you then want to unplug the power to the Airport Extreme, and then take the end of the Ethernet cable you unplugged from the iMac or Lap top MacBook Pro and connect it to the back of the Modem.
Next unplug the power cord from the modem and wait about 5 minutes, then plug the power back into the Arris Modem and wait until all lights come back on the modem wait
about 5 minutes, then plug the power cord back to the Airport Extreme and you will see it the light blinking yellow. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes, during this time Restart you IMAC or MacBook Pro, and once it is back up click on the Airport Utility and you should see on the Airport Utility screen.
For INTERNET to the left the light should be green and you should see the Airport Extreme also appear and the light to the left on the screen should also be green. If they are, you then should be able to click on the Wireless Symbol on top of bar of the screen and click to select the Wireless Network Name you created.
If you Do Not See the light (Icon) next to INTERNET turn Green, or if you see the Internet Light Green, but the Light (Icon) next to the Airport Extreme is yellow, unplug the power again to the modem and unplug the power again to the Airport extreme and wait about 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes. Then plug the power cord back to the modem wait till all the lights light up then, plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme and Restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro.
The Airport Extreme light should change from yellow to green. Open up the Airport Utility to see what the indicators are showing they should both be green. Again select Wireless network you created under the Wireless Icon on the top right of the screen. Open Safari and see if you are able to Route to a web page or the apple site should appear.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR AIRPORT EXTREME WAS PREVIOUSLY SET UP FOR USE WITH ANOTHER CARRIERS ROUTER OR MODEM.
NOTE: If you already had your Airport Extreme connected for example, I previously had ATT Uverse and the Airport Extreme was connected to the Wireless Router Model 3801HGV, I disabled the Uverse Wireless and used the Airport Extreme for the Wireless signal in bridge mode, as the Airport extreme Signal is much stronger than the Uverse router, and I was able to obtain a Wireless signal with the Airport Extreme way much better with no signal loss which was very very frustrating with the Uverse router.
Anyhow if you had it hooked up like this, now that you will be using it with the Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A, you will need to reset the Airport Extreme to clear out the old data it has in memory, with the previous set up otherwise it will not work. Trust me I spent 6 hours trying to make it work reading all Apple Support Community questions and answers relating to this type issue/problem others have been having trying to get their set up working. I tried all the tips, and I finally decided just to see if by chance I would be able to connect with someone with Charter Tech support who might be familiar with Apple to be able to assist me and by luck I did. He told me why it was not working and was all due the previous configuration with the ATT Uverse router was still in memory with the Airport Extreme. Finally it was 10:30 PM when I decided to call Charter Tech Support and I had been working on this since 3:00 pm pacific. I did not call them earlier as all the post I read said they never received any good help from Charter. After calling them I finished up by 11:00 PM and was able to finally connect Apple Tv, iMac, iPhones and Macbook Pro. We love our Apple Product and Happy all is connected with the new
Internet Provider Charter. I must say the speed is way way much better than it ever was with AT&T Uverse.
THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO:
First you will need to unplug the Airport Extreme, then by taking the tip of a pen or paper clip end you need to push the reset button on the back of the Airport Extreme and hold it
down and at the same time plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme count to 5 or 10 then release the reset button. Then once he light in front of the Airport Extreme stops blinking you need to plug the Ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to your iMAC or Macbook Pro, and restart which ever one you have, then open the Airport Utility once it is back up. If you see airport extreme pop up with the old network name or it shows and yellow triangle click on the Airport Extreme ICON it will not let you configure it but will ask if you want to get rid of it or remove and just do it. Then Again restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro, open up Airport Utility again, and on the top left you should see under “Other Airport Base Stations” the MAC ID for the Airport Extreme.

I have an Airport Extreme as my router and am using time capsule to extend the network in my new house. My ISP is only providing me 4-5 ip addresses and wants me to set up my router to issue out new ip addresses for all my devices.How do I fix this?Help.
They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.

Am attempting to set up a Wi Fi network with an airport extreme. Get most of the way through the setup (have a dsl modem) but get an error that it cannot connect to the internet. Says I have a problem with a DSN server and asks for what appears to be a series of numbers. I had an old airport express working for some time and never saw this.
Decided to upgrade since the express was not powerful enough to work in the whole house.It is always a good idea when changing out networking hardware to perform a complete power recycle of all of your networking gear.
Please try the following:
Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s). Leave them powered-off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to make sure that is has enough time to initialize.
Power-up (plug into power) the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: The status light may continue to flash amber after this timeframe. This is ok as it may just be letting you know that some additional configuration items need to be taken care of like setting up wireless security.)
Power-up the computer(s).
Computers connected to the AEBS by either wire or wireless should now be able to access the Internet. Please post back your results. -
Setting up airport extremes with mobile netbook cart
I work in a school environment, running windows. We have four mobile carts in the high school. We have an airport extreme for each of the carts. In our situation, the airport extremes are mobile. They do not stay in one location all the time. The teachers connect the airports to a wired connection in their classrooms. We have the netbooks set up to automatically connect to an airport when in range. I have each of the airports setup the same way; create a wireless network, each has it's own network name, radio mode is automatic, channel selection is automatic. Internet options are connect using ethernet, connection sharing is off (bridge mode) and tcp/ip is static. There are a couple of issues we seem to be having. One is that the airport with the stronger signal is not always the one the netbook connects to. I could have one classroom of netbooks connecting to an airport that is located two classrooms down the hall when there is airport in the classroom that has a stronger signal. What could be causing this? We push out settings to the netbooks via group policy, such as redirected desktop and network shares. When a user logs in they don't seem to get the whole policy all of the time. If you restart or logoff then login, the netbook gets the policy correctly. Could this be a problem when multiple airports are in range of the netbook trying to access the network? Is having the airports mobile, moving from one room to the next, a bad idea? tried this but it didnt work that well, the distance between the main airport and the extenders is too long. Also, when choosing extending, it came bugging me with incorrect dhcp settings. Couldn't solve that.
So i configured allt he extremes with creating a wireless network, same ssid and same wpa settings. Als bridgedsetting is disabled.
That seems to work. Anyone with an opinion about this configuration? -
WDS Set up - Help Needed! Airport Extreme with one Relay and one remote

I need a bit of help. I am feeling quite stupid and frustrated. I am having some difficulty with setting up a WDS network with:
Base station: Airport extreme (current version)
Relay: Airport Express (current version)
Remote: Airport Express (current version)
I start by cold resetting the three units. The Base station is connected via Ethernet. The setup I wish to get going is a simple base - relay - remote.
I go through the utility manager and set up the base station, first as "create a wireless network" enter the ISP details etc etc. Its green light. Everything is fine. Then manually configure the Base Station. Hold down option key hit Participate in a WDS. I then select main enter + and add the Mac Id's for the intended Relay unit and Remote Unit (12 character and numeric string). At this stage I am only adding the intended Relay unit and Remote units MAC number.
Question 1: Do I need to add the base unit's MAC number itself under: WDS Remotes? even I am setting it up as Main?
I am careful to note the security settings and the the Wireless Network name to match these in the relay and remote set up. Under the Wireless tab I leave the Radio Mode: as Automatic (802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n). I make sure the base has "allow this network to be extended" ticked. Under Radio Channel selection I edit it to reference channel 1 for 2.4Ghz (5 Ghz leave as Auto). I am careful when setting up the Relay and remote to match the Radio Channel. (Although I tired many channels as I thought maybe interference was a factor and denying the fact its obviously my set up skills as a factor).
Question 2: Do you need to disable Guest networks? I would think it does not matter as I have tired turning it off and has not made any difference.
Under Access Control I leave as default, Not enabled.
Next I hit update and and error message comes up. WDS Error as it can not find other units. Ok fine as the relay and remote are not yet set up. So I ignore and can get to the stage where the base unit is working and green light with an internet connection.
I then proceed to set up the Relay unit. Doing the same steps as above with a couple of differences being I add the MAC numbers and select the WDS Mode (Relay for Relay and Remote for Remote. I add the Main base station (i.e Airpot Extreme MAC No.) when prompted and then + the Remotes MAC number. The same for the Remote except I only need to add the base station's main no.
Question 3. Do I need to add the Relay's own MAC number to its own setup? This seems doubtful as with the base station but tired with and without for good measure with no success.
The 2.4Ghz channels are all set to 1. Radio mode set to Auto. Although even when I try to manually set them to all identical it doesn't seem t help.
Then the problems begin. The base unit is Green and the Relay and Remote say they are not connected to the internet. I assume since I have not seen a WDS Error message then the units are set up correctly or as I ignored it on the base unit. But when click unignore the error seems to work itself out.
Question 4. I need help to understand why I have no internet. The remote / relay says something about no IP number and I don't really understand what I should do? Do I need to go back the Airport Utility Manager and start messing about with the TCP/IP, DHCP, NAT ? The base is set up PPPoE and the relay and remote are set to Bridge.
It is really puzzling me why the relay and remote flash amber with error messages related to the IP number? I have tried turning off the base station and router and then on again but no joy.
Can anyone please enlighten me or give me a few ideas? I am doing something very obviously stupid and I guess the fix is something simple that I have overlooked.

I don't think the "main" unit needs to be told about the "remote" unit, only about the "relay" unit.

You'd never enter the MAC address of a unit into its own configuration, if that's what you mean. I also don't think that you'd need to enter the MAC address of the main into the remote and conversely.

Five things have to match in a WDS configuration: network name, encryption type, network password, band, and channel.

I think this should be the MAC address of the relay station, not that of the main station.

New Set up of Airport Extreme with New Macbook and 'Old' Mac Mini
I have wirelessly connected my new Mac Book to Airport Extreme, and have tested the connection by using a shared printer. I have connected my old Mac Mini (OSX 10.3.9) via Wired LAN.The MacMini does not recognise a connection to the Airport Extreme. I would like to share files between the MacBook and the Mini, but they do not 'See' each other. What have I not done correctly?

A restart did not change anything.
I have been able to Ping each IP address succesfully from each machine, so the only aspect I can't understand is why each machine is not showing when I view the Network in Finder

Setting up Airport Extreme with Arescom MSN NetDSL 800 Modem
Hi There,
I helped a friend set up his new Airport Extreme yesterday and although we were able to get the network and internet working, we are getting the Double Nat error (amber blinking light). This was only after hours of trial and error and the only setting that gave us a successful internet connection and network was to set the Extreme to "Share a public IP address" with IPv4 configured manually and defining a DHCP range. Again, this results in a connectable network for all clients and gives access to the internet but the Extreme is telling us that there's a double NAT error.
The only info I can find about the Arescom 800 modem is that it is designed for one connection and only has two IP addresses to distribute. One for itself and one for the computer or router connected to it. So while our setup seems to work and is the most logical of the choices, the Extreme still doesn't like it. It suggests using bridging mode but that results in no IPs being distributed past the first connection to the modem (the Extreme).
Any ideas to get that beautiful green light instead of this amber error flasher?
Thanks in advance.That's the plan for now. Thanks Duane! Although I hate seeing that eyesore amber blinking light. He may end up with a new DSL modem in the near future anyway because he's thinking of upgrading his DSL service. I guess he'll just have to ignore the light for now unless there's an easy configuration option I'm missing?

Setting Up AirPort Extreme for Static IP
We purchased a new AirPort Extreme about a month ago. It was very easy to set up and worked very well for all of the devices in our home, with the exception of VPN connections on our work laptops. These were incredibly slow (taking 20-30 minutes to open large spreadsheets, etc.). We talked to our ISP (4G satellite connection) about this, and they recommended going to a static IP. I have used the AirPort Utility to enter the IP address, sub net mass, router address and DNS numbers, and the AirPort indicates everything is set up properly (green status light, no errors in AirPort Utility), but it will no connect. Looking at the Internet Connection through AirPort Utility, it has all the correct numbers but the connection says "disconnected". I am able to establish an ethernet connection directly from the modem to a computer and connect with no issues. And the ISP has confirmed that the modem is working properly.
What am I missing to get the connection throughb to my AirPort Extreme?

Yes i did change all those and have tried with all the possible settings.
Still the problem persists..It shows all the configuration and all is right and still it is not connecting to internet.
Cross checked with the ISP, Tried same configuration in the mac machine(It's working) everything else seems to be fine but only the Airport is not connecting to the Internet.
Any solution or clarification will be appreciated.

AirPort Extreme with Static IP unable to connect to internet
I have a business internet account and static IP addresses. I just purchased a new AirPort yesterday and after setting it up with the static info, I am unable to connect to the internet. My other clients on the network can connect to each other but not to the internet. I tired pinging the IP address and that was successful but when I tried to ping the Gateway / Router address, that was not. When I plug my computer directly into the cable modem I can connect to the internet. The funny thing is that when I pull up my network settings and look at the IP address that the Ethernet connection is showing, they are nothing like the addresses that Cox gave to me. I am assuming that this problem is on their end and not my end but since I am new to this type of networking I wanted to see if there is possibly something I am doing wrong before I get them on the phone again.

You may have already done this, but it was not mentioned in your post. Your cable modem may be "remembering" your computer. In order for it to connect correctly to a new device, you must always reset and power down the cable modem for a period of time.
Some newer modems will reset in a few minutes, some take 15-30 minutes and some older devices on older cable system may require 4-6 hours or more to fully reset the equipment back at the service provider.
If you haven't done this yet, try pushing the reset button on the modem and then power it off and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Power off the rest of the network as well.
Power up the modem first and let it run a few moments, then power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes, then your devices one by one. If your settings are correct on the AEBS, that should get you connected to the internet.

Hello al, l I have an existing wireless network with an arcitonic wireless router provider with my fios tv. Everything is working well. Now I want to add airport extreme to increase my network range and later add apple tv /net flicks I,m not great with this stuff. Some wold be great.
You will need to establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Fios router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme and then configure the AriPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network".
You can configure the AirPort Extreme to provide another separate wireless network if you wish, or if you assign the same wireless network name, and use the same security setting and password that the Fios is using, the Extreme will provide more wireless coverage....and you won't have to change wireless networks to connect to the wireless on the Extreme.
Follow the guided setup using AirPort Utility to "create a wireless network". The setup will suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode, which would be the correct setting when used with the Fios router. -

I Just purchased a Airport Extreme and what to use it on my current cable broadband network. But i have a few issues with doing this, due to my exsisting setup.
Here is my current set up.
NetGear CG3100D-2 which i have 2 Port forwards set up on this router (i have 2 CCTV DVR's connected via ethernet to this router, so i can remotley view DVR's).
2 Apple TV's ( 1 connected via ethernet and 1 wifi)
Multiple wifi devices.
Here is what i would like to achieve on my Network.
I want to be able to remotley access my 2 CCTV DVR's and also be able to access my AEBS-USB External HDD Remotely.
I have tried so many ways of connecting AEBS but havent be able to achieve what i want from my network..
I have spent hours trying to do this so any help or information would be much appreciated.
If the solution is difficult to set up could i get some step by step direction on how to achive this if possible..

oh and i have access to airport utility 5.6 and i am obviously running Mac (apple household)My gut feel is that the bottleneck is the link from your home to your ISP. Airport will not address that issue.
I'm not familiar with AT7T U-verse. Is that DSL or cable. If it's DSL, be aware of the following... The nominal data rate is 700Kbps. Optional (extra cost) versions are available at 3Mbps and 5Mbps. In all cases, these nomal rates are valid only if you live in a tent on the phone company's central office. Physical distance from the C.O. will reduce the actual rates.
Nominal cable rates range from around 3Mbps to as high as 30Mbps, depending on how much you're paying for the service. Unlike DSL, these nominal data rates do not change with distance from the provider. However, also unlike DSL, the cable data rates will change when neighbors are using the system as the facility is shared. (With DSL, you have your own physical wire pair to the C.O.) -
Set up Airport Extreme with 2 Airport Express connected by CAT5??
I recently bought an Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express. My plan was to use to Airtunes with my AV receiver in my basement. Unfortunately, because the distance between these two areas is long (and separated by two floors) I'm not able to get a strong enough signal with the Airport Express to use Airtunes. I bought another Airport Express to put on the middle floor of our house but the signal in the basement was still not strong enough even with this addition.
I do have a way of connecting the middle floor of our house with the basement area by a CAT5 ethernet cable. My plan now is to connect the two Airport Express modules by their ethernet ports with this cable. The Airport Express on the middle floor connects with the Airport Extreme base station wirelessly without any problems. My question is what is the proper setup for the 2nd Airport Express connected by ethernet in my basement.
Airport Tech support said this could be done. They recommended setting up a new wireless network with the 2nd Airport Express by "fooling" into thinking it was connected directly to the router but using the same network name with a different wireless channel as my Airport Extreme base station. This setup actually works for several hours but then the Airport Express module that is connected to the Airport Extreme blinks amber. Interestingly the 2nd Airport Express with usually remain with the green light on.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to set this up regarding network configuration with the Airport Utility?

That will work with as long as the AirPort Express (AX) is connected via Ethernet. The only other setting you need to make is to configure it to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
If this one looses connection, then something is wrong with the AX or the Ethernet connection (cable and/or connectors).
