Set up an Airport Express as an extender for an Extreme base station

Thanksgiving Friday arrived, and I was excited to see my Airport Express arrived in the mail. My plan was to use it to extend my Wifi from my Airport Base Station. I will fast forward past some of what I did (unless you need the details to help me), but I am now at a point where my Macbook recognizes the Extreme in Airport Utility (I lost even that at one point last night) as it always has, but It does not recognize the Express. In other words, when I open the utility, the Extreme shows up in the left pane, and the Express is nowhere to be found.
In going through the set up procedures the Mac did recognize the Express at first, but I must have screwed something up. I have done hard resets on the Express, and I have done resets and reboots of the Extreme, modem and Mac. The Express is plugged in and giving my the flashing amber light. I am definitely in range of the Express, and the Express is in range of the Extreme.
HELP!

You'll need to jot down a setting that the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) is using in order to give the AirPort Express (AX) the correct setting.
Open AirPort Utility, select your AEBS and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Jot down the setting that you see for Wireless Security
Close AirPort Utility
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly and then release.
Temporarily, position the AX near your AirPort Extreme and connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility, select the AX and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, establish a device password (write this down) and adjust time settings
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AEBS that you wrote down
Wireless Password = Same password that your AEBS network is using
Confirm Password
Click Update at the lower right and the AX will restart. You can close AirPort Utility and disconnect the ethernet cable once you see the message that the settings have been saved to the AX.
After 30-45 seconds, you should have a green light on the AX. Now you can move the AX where it is needed and power it back up again. The ethernet port on the AX is also enabled in this type of configuration if you need to connect an ethernet device.
Assuming no major obstructions, a good starting location for the AX is a point that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from your AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more coverage. The AX can only "extend" what it receives, so if you position it too far away, it will extend a weak signal.

  • Can an airport express 802.11n extend range of Netgear base stn?

can an airport express 802.11n model (i think it is two years old) work as a range extender for an existing base station (it's a netgear station, not an airport base) without having to hook up an internet cable to the Airport Express?  --Bishop

Virtually no chance that the Express is compatible with a product from another manufacturer, but you can always give it a try.
Apple designed the "extend" feature to only work with other Apple routers.
If you have already been trying to do this and cannot, I think you already have your answer.

  • Airport Utility can not find air port extreme base station

I am running XP home on my computer and have an air port extreme base station connected to it wired. I have no problem connecting to the internet yet more times then not the air port utility can not find the base station. On occasion it will find it but most of the time it can not. Rebooting does not help.

I recently purchased one of the new Airport Extreme base stations and after carefully reading the instructions; I first installed the Airport Utility 5.5 that came on the CD onto my MacbookPro. I then connected the new base station to my macbookpro via Ethernet and power it up. I copied a previously saved configuration onto it. All my printers, IMAC and macbookpro were able to connect.
I then used my older base station and my airport express to extend the N and G networks through the house. My problem was (1) the new Airport utility would consistently lose the older extreme base station and the airport express, (2) An my HP printers keep losing the wireless connection to the new airport extreme base station. The only resolve was to consistently restart the new base station, after which (1) the new airport utility would see the older base station and express again and (2) the wireless connection to the printers would be restored.
After about a week of this, I removed the new Airport Extreme and replaced it with the older extreme (802.11N DRAFT) and de-installed the Airport Utility 5.5 and re-installed Airport Utility 5.4.2 and everything works fine.
Has anyone else experienced any problems with the newly released Airport Extreme (fully 802.11N) base stations and Airport Utility 5.5?

    Welcome to the discussions!
You might want to follow Apple's step by step guide for setting up the "extend a wireless network" feature. I assume that you have an AirPort Express(n).
Reference pages 43-44 in the AirPort Neworks Guide.

  • How do I use the new Airport Express as an extender for a non-Apple router?

We have an "Arris" router in our house and are thinking of buying an Airport Express to extend the internet. How can we use the Airport express as a repeater on a non-Apple router without having to use millions of ethernet cables?

Apple designed their "extend a wireless network" to only work with other Apple routers wirelessly, so it would be extremely unlikely like it would work with an Arris wireless router.
Your best bet is to always use products from the same manufacturer if you need this type of feature on your network to insure compatibility.
If Arris does not offer a product for this purpose, a "universal" extender like the Netgear device linked below might be able to do what you want. It was not "universal" enough to extend an Apple network when I tested a device recently.

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.

  • Airport express will not show up as a base station in Airport utility

I just got Quest service and also Airport express. I hooked it up to my Quest internet modem and Airport Express has a steady green light. That means it is receiving a internet signal right? Then why won't the Airport utility find it as a base station? I cannot go anywhere from there, as far as setting up a wireless network for the airport. Am I missing a key step or what can I do? HELP!

torenh, Welcome to the discussion area!
Have you tried doing a hard or factory default reset?
Have you tried temporarily connecting the AirPort Express (AX) via Ethernet to your Mac to configure it?

  • Airport Express Network won't play music from Base Station and remote spkrs

Is there any way i can hook up speakers to the base statino and the remote speakers? I am getting a message that says the base station is not configured to play music as part of the group. it says I can play music from base station, but not simultaneously with the living room speakers which i have set up on a repeater airport express.
    Thanks,
    PW

Well, I can choose multiple speakers, "living room" and "computer," and they play out of both, but it will not play from multiple speakers if I include the base station, which is hooked up to speakers in my office. The base station will only play if I choose it exclusively, and I wondered if there was something i needed to do to configure the base station to enable it to play as well.

  • Airport extreme base station and express WDS?

    Greetings,
Before I continue to struggle with this, I'm wondering if someone can confirm the viability of the following scenario:
N wired to AE wds'd to ABS wired to switch wired to other PCs
    N = existing ethernet network
AE = Airport Express config'd thru WDS as a 'base station', though not distributing IPs etc (that is handled through N)
ABS = Airport Base Station config'd thru WDS as a 'Remote base station'
The problem is, when I connect an Airport client computer to the network (by choosing the AE) I cannot see the PCs at the end of the chain. I'm testing this connectivity through pinging.
Am I missing something? Is it possible that an AE cannot be a base station?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions/tips!
PowerMac, Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks, Don. Yes, that link was a big help. A couple of key points for anyone else trying to do something similar:
    - You can use WDS to bridge two different ethernet networks, providing that only there is only one gateway and one machine/router doling out IPs via DHCP
    - Use the same network name for all APs in the WDS network
    - Assign the APs IP addresses manually
    - The ethernet port on an AP Express can only be used to extend a network when WDS is employed

  • How to set-up new Airport Express to extend range of Airport Extreme

Purchased a new Airport Express to use it as a range extender on existing home network with an operating Airport Extreme base station. While I've read instructions, I'm unclear whether the Express needs to be connected by ethernet cable for its initial setup, or can I simply plug it and initialize it wirelessly onto the same household network? (I've tried the latter but without success).

    to edex67 and Bob Timmons:
My objective is to extend the wireless range of the Airport Extreme base station wirelessly - so I do appreciate that the Airport Express would needsto be located haflway between the base station and the "dead zone" area.
The suggestion of using a Powerline ethernet connection to the Airport Express has merit (especially as I have one available).
I continue to use OSX 10.6.8 - does this affect my set-up in any way?
My problem had been - and remains - how to configure the Airport Express in range extend mode - I did click these boxes on both the Extreme base station and the Express, however the Express still has flashing amber lights and error codes - one indicating no internet availability on the Airport Express.

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

  • I did set up my Airport Express to extend my existing network. It did ok but I can't see the name assigned to the Airport Express name in my available networks. Is that normal?

I did set up my Airport Express to extend my existing network. It did ok but I can't see the name assigned to the Airport Express name in my available networks. Is that normal?

If the AirPort Express is extending your network it is using the same wireless network name as your "main" router.
Your main router and the Express act like one "big" network now.
Your computer will connect to either the main router or the Express automatically....depending on where it sees the best signal.

  • My Airport Express won't extend range. How to set up?

My Airport Express won't extend the range of my Airport Extreme. How should I set it up to get it to work?  Stuart

When the Express is configured to "extend" it is a wireless repeater.
"Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary
    Speaks for itself
can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead."
As will adding another computer, iPhone or any wireless device to the network, for that matter.
FWIW, I have run 4 AirPort Expresses all setup to "extend" and noticed nothing except faster Internet browsing and download speeds throughout the house.
IF...you can connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet connection, that will provide better overall performance. That is the way any commercial network is designed, except on a much larger scale.

  • Trying to set up Airport Express as range extender

I successfully set up my new Airport Extreme base station. Now I want to add on my new Airport Express to extend the range of WiFi. I plugged in the Express, opened Airport Utility, selected the Express icon on the left. I get this message: "Setting up this AirPort wireless device requires switching wireless networks. Switching wireless networks may interrupt your connection to the Internet." What does this mean? Should I go ahead and click "Switch"? None of the directions in the manual or discussion forums mention this message in their instructions. I am timid! Can anyone advise me?

Bob, I had a big failure today. I clicked on Airport Extreme and "Switch," and chose the option "Extend the range of network." I answered the other required questions (password, etc.) then waited for Airport Utility to "Upgrade" the system. After about 3 minutes Airport Utility says that the network cannot be found! The whole internet service was down! Did not even appear in the Airport menu. The base station no longer appeared in the left column, and I had to reset and re-enter the base Extreme all over again.
Then I tried again but this time used Airport Express first. It said that my network "could not be found." I tried again the original way - I am embarrassed to tell how many times I tried this. Finally I gave up. I will be returning the Airport Express gizmo to amazon.com for a refund. I don't know how other smart people accomplished this, but apparently the range cannot be "extended' on Airport Extreme, so I sure don't need the Extender.
I wish I could learn something from this frustrating experience, other than I am not very capable, and Apple products are not all they are cracked up to be.
    Any comments?
