Hi...
Thanks for help miqorz...
unforunately, no change... : (
as there is no stupid question in the newbie area, is there any issue w/ the " or ' ?
i've seen something somewhere looking like BROWSER='firefox' &
you wrote "firefox"... anyway, i've tried both but...
btw, as i don't have any idea of what it means, ~/.bashrc contains the following :
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
PS1='[u@h W]$ '
doesn't look like browser related but ...
thanks in advance

  • "Set as default app" not working

I have the option of which application to use when doing certain things on my Q10. It gives me the option to "Set as default app" my selection. I check the check box and make my selection. Next time it asks the same thing with the list of applications to choose from. In Settings->App Manager->Default Apps it shows my selection too but the OS is not automatically using my selection. It is asking me ach time as I said. Does anyone know how to fix this so it works properly?
    Thanks

I've noticed the same thing. And even if the setting does stick it often has to be reset after a reboot. It appears that option is a "work in progress"

  • System keeps re-setting the default app to Preview for iWork files.

    Hello.
I've scoured the internet for a solution to this problem, but can't find one.  The problem applies to Numbers, Pages and Keynote, and I am putting this post in the forum for each.  I shall explain it using a Numbers file as an example.
For three or four years, I've had a file that was created in Numbers to be opened in Numbers; it's a spreadsheet that I update with every transaction of my bank account.
Until about a week ago, the file would always open in Numbers, its default application, and then the file kept opening in Preview instead of in Numbers.  I checked the 'Get Info' panel and found that its default application was Preview.  This was strange, so I changed it to Numbers.  When I opened the file the next day, it again opened in Preview, and I found again that Preview was set as its default app.  This time, I set Numbers as the default app by right-clicking on the file, selecting 'Open With', and Numbers wasn't on the list, so I went to 'Other...', and in the 'Choose Application' window, navigated to the Numbers app, selected it and activated the 'Always Open With' option.
As you would expect, the file then opens in Numbers.  However, whenever the computer has been off and I have logged in again, the default app for the file has reverted to Preview.
The only thing I can think of that might have a bearing on this problem is a recent App Store purchase.  I bought Numbers on an iWork '09 disk back in 2008/9, but about a week ago decided to uninstall the iWork apps with AppZapper and buy them from the App Store (I just like to have the App Store as the source of my apps, and I had some money to spare).  I can’t see why this would cause the problem, but the installation of these apps and the start of the problem seem to co-incide.
I wondered if the problem could be solved by re-creating my spreadsheet in a new Numbers file, so I opened Numbers, selected a blank worksheet and pasted the spreadsheet from the original file into this new one, but it made no difference: the next time I logged into my system, Preview was the default app for the new file as well.  The problem persists even with new files created in Numbers, Pages or Keynote that are unconnected with older files and after the App Store purchases.
I would be grateful for any advice the community can offer.
    Thank you.

    Hello again.
I followed your advice and created another user account, and in that one, Numbers, not Preview, was the default app for my Numbers file.  Logging back into my original account, I deleted the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file, and for good measure, the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist.lockfile as well, and reset Numbers as the default app for my Numbers file.
I restarted the system, but found that Preview was now the default app for the file.  Perhaps the .plist file needed a second restarting of the system, so I set the default app for the file to Numbers again.  I also put Pages, Numbers and Keynote into a new folder called iWork '09, as they used to be before I replaced my shop-bought iWork disk installations with the same apps bought form the App Store.  I don't know if this made a difference.  I restarted the system and, this time, the default app was Numbers.
Pages and Keynote are also now the default apps for files created by them.
You have been very helpful and I appreciate it.  Thank you.

  • How do I set the default app to open a certain file format?

I want preview to go away when I open images files, and I want tiffs and jpegs, etc to be opened by Photoshop, and .eps opened by Adobe Illustrator. Preview drives me nuts!

    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • Files lose Default App preferences

Mac Pro Dual 2.6, 5 gb RAM, OS 10.1.11, CS4.
These are the steps I take to set the default app for PSD, tif, and jpegs.  Selected a file/Get Info/Open with/CS4/Change All/"Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application "Adobe Photoshop CS4.app"?"/Continue.  This works fine until I shut downt the computer.  When I restart the OS has gone back to it's defaults and made the "default app" Preview.  In order to get the PSD, tif, or jpeg files to recognize CS4 as the default app, I have to go through the previous process again.
What is am I doing wrong or how to do stop this from happeing?
    Thanks,

Odd that it didn't work before.  All that Cocktail option does is to delete the "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" and reboot your machine.
Are you sure you rebooted after deleting the file manually early?

  • CS4 trial overrides CS3 default apps

    Hey,
I've installed trial versions of the new CS4 apps we use (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to evaluate a bit before deciding on an upgrade.
However, EVERYTHING seems to open in CS4 apps now, and it seems impossible to change the default app to anything other than the CS4 versions. I can change single documents, but I can't change the default for all documents, CS4 somehow overrides this on and on.
I've even tried a "Default Apps" prefpane, but no go. Selecting the CS3 app just causes it to immediately revert to the CS4 version. Changing the UTI it seems possible to change it to Preview, but it doesn't even list the CS3 version in that dropdown. Whichever way I turn, it seems to always go back to defaulting to CS4 apps. I DO NOT WANT THAT! I am only evaluating it, not using it for day to day production. I also don't want to uninstall it (yet), since I still need to check it out further.
Following some tips on the net, I've also tried setting the default apps in BOTH Bridge CS3 and Bridge CS4 to for example InDesign CS3 for .indd files, yet it STILL opens in CS4 for some reason. And why there are two seemingly independent tables (one in Bridge CS3, one in CS4) that doesn't reflect the changes of the other one is beyond me.
What can I do to have CS3 apps open documents as default, but still allow CS4 to reside on the system for evaluation purposes? For that matter, I can't for the life of me understand why Adobe needs to fiddle with this in their own apps as well, why not just let the system/user handle this?
b Any help is welcome, the bottom line is: I want to keep CS4 installed for evaluation, but keep using CS3 apps as default apps for all existing documents.

Aliases is what I use now, yes, and of course it
    i works.
Not the first time I've had to use multiple versions of Adobe apps, although the first time I've had problems with it on OS X. I was just wondering if there was any way for the USER to override this (I believe it is meant to be possible, if you ask Apple) and choose which app to open a specific file type in. I guess in that respect, even old Windows (despite all its flaws) versions trumps OS X.
Let's just conclude then that no one knows any workaround for this and leave it at that. Funny thing, it seems that if you ask a question within the Mac or Linux community, the answers you get are sometimes waaay off the mark (nowhere near helpful to the original question) while Windows communities are more like "Do this, it'll solve your problem". Are Linux/Mac users thinking more outside the box, one wonders? :)

  • How do I set Preview to be the default app for opening ALL pdf's?

I have both Preview and Acrobat Professional on a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion.
I don't see an option if I get info on Preview to set it as the default app for all PDF's.
Where can I set this?  I only use Acrobat on occasion for form fill-in but prefer to use Preview.
    thanks

Looks like I got it to work by selecting a document and setting in get info.  For some reason it was not working before.

  • Setting Default apps with minimal WMs (dwm, awesome, etc)

How are folks running WMs like awesome and dwm setting their default applications (I'm particularly interested in the web-browser setting)?
On past systems, I've had GNOME installed, and just used the preferred applications dialogue, but that's not the case in my current system.
Does anyone know where dwm/awesome look for default app settings, and how I'm able to change those settings?

For example, in your shell config:
    export BROWSER="your-browser"
There's nothing like that in either Awesome or dwm. And I don't think one really needs it. In case you want to open certain file types in dedicated applications, you can e.g. define aliases to achieve this. (Everything depends on the shell you use, or the file manager. In my case Midnight Commander together with zsh does the job well.)
Edit: consider me slowww, always a couple of minutes slowwwer.

    Hi,
It seems this is a Microsoft related. You are referring on how to set JPG Image in Photoshop Elements by default. You may try visiting Microsoft's Support page http://support.microsoft.com/ for you to get the correct information/help you need.

  • Is it possible to set ID 5 as default app for INDD files?

I am using Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), and I have upgraded to ID 5.5 for the 30-day trial. As I am not sure whether I want to keep it, I would like to keep ID 5 as the application associated with INDD files, as opposed to ID 5.5. Is this possible? Currently, when I click on a file to open it, it automatically opens in 5.5. I have tried to set the default application in the "Get Info" panel (please see attached screenshot), but it doesn't seem to stick. I know that a workaround is simply to open ID 5, and then open INDD files through the FILE>OPEN command, but it would be easier if I could open files directly by clicking on them in a Finder window.
    Thanks,
    Neil

You can also start the cs4 versions of the program first and when you double click on any creative suite files it will default to the program you have running.
Alternative would be to drag them to the required version.

  • How to set Preview as default app to open pdf's?

Hi, Somehow I switched to Adobe Reader as the default app with which to open PDFs and I don't know how to switch back to Preview. Help? I'd like to be able to click on a PDF or download one with Safari without opening Reader but opening Preview instead. Thanks!

Select any PDF file then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select Preview from the Default drop down menu then click on the Change All button.

  • TextEdit problems: causes spinning ball/freezes, can't make it default app

I'm having some serious problems with, of all things, TextEdit. On an iMac running 10.4.11 with TextEdit v. 1.4 (the standard version for Tiger), I've been having the following two major issues:
    1. About once per day, or at least once every two days, for absolutely no perceivable reason, while typing in TextEdit, I get the "spinning beach ball"; the same pattern happens every time: I wait about 6 minutes for the beach ball to stop spinning, then I try to "save" my open document; this causes another six-minute spin/wait, after which it saves. Then I try to "Quit" Textedit, and after another six-minute spin, it finally quits. Then, any successive action on my part -- clicking an application icon in the dock, or doing command-option-escape to force quit things, or basically anything at all, causes the spinning ball to return, and this time it will not go away. I've waited as long as two hours, and it just keeps spinning. Command-option-escape does nothing -- no response. Nor does command-period, or anything I could think of. The only way out of the freeze is to press the power button and turn off the computer. Terrible!
This ONLY happens when I am working in TextEdit -- no other application causes the problem. And it only happens when I have an unsaved TextEdit document topmost on the screen. It has happened at least 30 times now, consistently, so it's not a one-time glitch. It has even happened when TextEdit was the ONLY application running -- so it couldn't be another application causing the problem. I had thought that "Classic" was causing the problem, because I often have Classic running to use a legacy OS9 application, but even when I restarted the computer and did not ever launch Classic, I still got the TextEdit-freeze problem.
    2. None of my TextEdit documents have TextEdit as their default launch application. Yes, I know about single-clicking the file, pressing "command-I" and in the Info box changing the "Open With" application to "TextEdit," and also then clicking on "change all" so that all similar files are opened with the same application. When I attempt this, it apparently makes the change, but in fact nothing happens: even after making the change, double-clicking the files does not launch TextEdit. In fact, it launches nothing at all, because when I check command-I again, the launch application has reverted to either "None", or to something mysterious called "ams1108.html", which not only is not an application, but it doesn't even exist on my computer (I searched for it).
HOWEVER, if TextEdit is already running, then when I double-click on any of my text documents, they will then open in TextEdit. But if TextEdit is not currently running, they won't open in it.
This applies to any file that has a visible or hidden "txt" or "rtf" or other normal TextEdit-compatible extension. Basically, any text file.
What is going on? I thought TextEdit was the most stable, most reliable application in all of Apple-dom. And I've been using it for years and years, but this problem has only recently started in the past couple months. I have no memory of making any changes to my computer that could have precipitated the change. Also: are these two problems related to each other?
I really don't know what to do. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated. (And no, I don't have the original 10.4 install disks, so I can't re-install TextEdit, unless it can be downloaded somewhere). Thanks.

OK, Carolyn, I wrote down all my prefs (glad I did), trashed the prefs file, restarted, relaunched TextEdit, reset all my preferences to my liking (which had reverted to default settings), quit TextEdit. Then I tried double-clicking some text files -- and the same problem (#2 above) persists. None of my TextEdit or text files have TextEdit as the default launch application -- they're still all either "None" or "ams1108.html". And, as before, if I try to change it to "TextEdit" in the file's info box, then click on "change all," it does not work: not only does it not change all the text files to be TextEdit, but clicking "change all" will cause the file in question to revert to "None" or "ams1108.html". However, if I only change the default app for that one file to TextEdit, and don't click "change all," then it will stick -- for now at least. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if after a restart they all changed back to "None.")
The short assessment is: trashing the prefs did NOT fix problem #2 above. It may or may not have fixed problem #1 -- hard to tell immediately, since the only way to find out is the use TextEdit for two days.
So, setting aside problem #1 for now: any suggestions for fixing problem #2 (default app can't be changed to TextEdit by clicking "change all")? I have thousands and thousands of TextEdit files I use, so changing them all manually one-by-one isn't feasible. Thanks.

  • Adobe Reader will not set as default application for .pdf in windows 8.1 pro x64

When I install adobe reader the icon/app changes from windows reader to Pick an app, I choose change and select adobe reader, the icons on my desktop flicker but nothing actually changes.Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, Select adobe reader, Choose defaults for this program, PDF is unticked so I tick it and choose save, go back in and it is unticked again??? Right click on a pdf file, choose open with, choose default program, use this app for all .pdf files is ticked, select adobe...Still nothing changes, stays on pick an app. I uninstall adobe reader then the pdf icon changes to and default opens with windows reader again. Reinstall adobe reader and back to the same thing. ???? I am a power user, build configure computers and subsequent software, started with DOS 6.0, learned unix/linux/networking concepts/networking security/server versions of windows/active directory. The only solution I could think of was to hack the registry which I looked for but could not find. I am running 8.1 pro x64, I just discovered that windows reader (which I cant uninstall) has the same problem when adobe reader is installed. Windows will not allow either one to be set as default while they co-exist.

After an extended session with chat only to be told that since Adobe Reader was free they could not help me :-(... I figured it out myself.
I opened a administrator: command prompt window and typed "regedit"  Through extensive searching and stumbled on this key located at... HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids  The S-1-5-21...1001... is my current logged on user, your value may differ slightly. Typically the builtin disabled administrator account is 1000 and when you install windows and create a user account "John Doe" it will have administrator priveleges and be auto numbered 1001, every user account created therafter will increase by 1 ie...1002, 1003, 1004 etc. even if you remove (delete) an account and re-create it you wont get the same number, the system will use the next number in sequence. The old one will have been trashed never to be used again. Again here is the key...
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids I deleted this key under (default) on the right side...
    Name                                                                       Type                                           Data
    (Default)                                                                   REG_SZ                                    (value not set)
AppX86746z2101ayy2ygv3g96e4eqdf8r99j            REG_NONE                              (zero-length binary value)  ---- This is the key to delete!!!
Personally I selected computer on the left side and the went to file/export then chose a file name [01 29 2014 regbackup.reg] and location. Then I selected "OpenWithProgids" and did the same thing,[pdf.reg] this saves a backup of the entire regestry and the key you are about to delete as a safety net. When you are done all you have to do is go to a pdf file, right click and choose open with...Adobe Reader - the box always use this app should already be checked.
I did this and it works yet because improper regestry modification can crash your system I am compelled to warn... Use at your own risk. If you are uncomfortable modifying your registry I would suggest consulting with someone qualified and has resources to do offline registry modifications/restorations which makes it VERY important to do the computer export registry backup.
