Set up iCal Server

Hi there,
I recently upgraded my server to 10.5.8 and now I want to use iCal across machines and iPad/iPhone. It's a standalone server that runs Afp, Firewall, Nat, Open Directory and Print. Coming from 10.3.9 I use the advanced settings. I've filled out all settings from an example in the Lynda training series but when I want to start iCal services I get an error: "No virtual host found for iCal Service". I used the default setting for Host Name: "localhost". What am I missing?
10.5.8 Server
G4 1.25 MDD

Here are my settings so far. From what I've gathered I need to make some adjustments at Open Directory and Dns. Anyone?

  • Setting up ical server

    Hi
can anybody give me some advice about ical server and the possible implementation within our company.
1.Can we set up calenders that only certain people can amend eg. we want to set up a calender for holidays but only certain people can alter the details.
2.Can you set up calenders that only certain people can view.
    3. Can you stop people from creating calender types on the server
4.Can we access the calenders through our webmail as we use kerio mail server
    hope someone can help

1 and 2. Yes. The person setting upp/adding a calendar delegates "permissions" to people from iCal by adding names of people who can either read and write to it or just read it. An "unticked" user can only read.
I think a user neeed to add his own calendar to see the calendars he/she is delegated (?).
    3. I don't know. If a user has calender "priviledges" in OD in WGM he/she can create calendars but if they are not delegated only he/she can see it/them. If a user doesn't have calendar "priviledges" I'm not sure but I don't think he/she can use any (CalDAV server) calendar with iCal.
    4. I don't know. If using the Wiki server you are supposed to be able to see/use the calendars from a webbrowser. Haven't tried that yet.
We use CommuniGate Pro 5.2.x which now handle CalDAV calendars and you can use the web calendar with iCal interchangeably. Setting up shared calendars in CommuniGate Pro needs quite a bit of tinkering though. If you do the setup/config it's easy for the users. Haven't tried mobile phone sync yet with CommuniGate (Exchange compatible or AirSync?).
You can still use publish and subscribe iCal ≤ 2.x style but to a separate WebDAV share (?). CommuniGate Pro used to (besides MAPI/Exchange/Outlook compatibility through a plug-in - like Kerio does) only support webcalendar "protocol" with no webbrowser integration.
I can't tell you what Kerio can do (yet) when it comes to iCal/CalDAV compatibility/setup/config.
Maybe others can fill in the "blanks"?

  • Need urgent Help for setting up iCal Server

I will move the iCal portion here, maybe I will get some help.
    Okay first my setup:
Two XServe with the latest 10.5 (one is the backup)
    Six Mac Pros with Leopard
Three Macbook Pros with Snow Leopard
All Macs are on an Windows 2003 Active Directory network. Also we have our accounts locally (on each workstation and laptop).
*So I have installed the advanced settings for the Server OS.
*Created a account for every user on the server
*The FTP, Web (for the local webpage), Open Directory and iCal services are on. (iCal would only activate with Open Directory service??)
*The iCal server destination (for the calendars) are on a separate drive with +Ignore Permissions+
Still can not link a account through iCal with the server!
Could somebody give me a walkthrough how to setup the iCal server?
Oh yeah another issue I had I can't get the calendaring checkbox in the user account to stick! Is this just a bug?

    Hi Umesh,
I would not use the repository on a database that was cloned. In my experience this leads to problems.
A better way is to clone the database and then create a new repository on the clone:
    1. export the repository on the windows server to an mdl file
    2. unregister all target users on solaris
    3. drop the repository on solarais
    4. create a new repository on solaris
    5. Import the data from the mdl file you exported in step 1
    6. register target users
    7. configure and register the locations
This way requires some manual work, but I do not see another way.
    Regards,
    Carsten.

  • Setting up iCal on the Mac OS X Server - please help if you can!

Trying to set up an iCal on our Mac OSX Server for just four of us at my small business. I spent all of yesterday trying to figure this out (i'm fairly novice), and I've had no luck. This is what I have done so far:
I created an open directory on our server, went into server admin -> services and checked iCal, open directory, and DNS (is this right?)
Then I created a group in workgroup manager and added the clients to the group.
I opened iCal and went to add an account. If i didn't put anything in the server details section it would just say that I don't have any configured principals - what does this mean??
Typed in the user information and copied a million different combinations of this in the account url spot:
    http://my.server.com:8008/principals/groups/groupshortname/. typing things like
    http://(my ip address here):8008/principals/groups/groupshortname/.
http://(what i think is my server address here):8008/principals/groups/groupshortname/ical.
and then it says server refused, or address could not be found, etc.
i do not know what to do. please help.
    thanks,
    ryan

Hello ryankarolak, and Welcome to the AppleBoards,
Setting up iCal Server is a little complicated in that you need to do several things in the right order. If you don't have DNS from another source you'll need good DNS set-up for many of the OS X Server services to function correctly. But I'm a little unsure of what your next move is since you didn't give any details about your server set-up or your office network lay-out.
You should be aware that there is an entire group dedicated to iCal Server here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1234
This other board is really the best place to search and find previous threads and post questions with the best chance of getting knowledgeable eyes on them. This forum is really for Xserve specific questions and isn't the best place to get OS X Server services questions answered - people will help out if they can but dedicated groups exist for some of the more complicated issues.
    Good luck,
    =Tod

  • Group calendars on 10.6.4 client machines no longer work with iCal Server

After updating 2 client machines to 10.6.4 I realized my group calendars no longer work in iCal.
I get "Server Responded With an Error" on all my group calendars, on both machines.
Preferences>Accounts>Server Path reveles the server path has reverted back to a GUID "/principals/_uids_/GUID string/" .
I change it back to "/principals/_uids_/wiki-GroupName/" and get it working again, but if I quit iCal and restart it again reverts back to the GUID.
I've trashed all calendars in ~/Library/Calendars, and the Prefs. I also tried "/principals/wikis/GroupName/", but again it reverts.
I booted to my 10.6.3 clone and have no problems with the group calendars there.
    (I'm running 10.6.4 Server)
Is anyone else having this issue?
    Any ideas?

Are you asking for an example of how to use calendarservermanageprincipals? While the tool is designed to help you configure privileges on resources and locations, it works fine for users. So I created a new user in Workgroup Manager to represent my Marketing department's calendars. I named this user "sharedmarketing".
Then, I wanted to give staff read-only access to the calendar and give Marketing write access, so I executed these two commands:
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-write-proxy groups:marketing users:sharedmarketing
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-read-proxy groups:staff users:sharedmarketing
I then imported the content from the Marketing Wiki calendar into this calendar and that was it!
If I logged in directly to the sharedmarketing account (not necessary), and looked how the account was set to be delegated, it properly showed group names:
There is no way to configure it like this using the iCal GUI, and this was I always felt that the management of privileges was the biggest obstacle in setting up iCal Server in this proper, supported fashion.
Then, from the client, I can naturally access those group calendars:
This is SO much easier to setup and maintain as each user only needs to have their ONE iCal account configured and they can just add the necessary groups, which is WAY easier than supplying users with crazy wiki-calendar URLs.

iCal Server email invitations - how to test and get this feature working
Thanks Apple for introducing this nice little feature into iCal but then completely neglecting to write any sort of useful manual that can explain what to do when it doesn't work after you set it up for the first time.
At long, long last we have finally got there after about 6 months of fiddling on and off, so I thought I had better post up the process since many have similar issues and it is hard to ascertain what is going on.
Using an external email server was just a waste of time and it still wouldn't handle the replies properly even though it was supposed to handle '+addressing'. In the end I set up a special gmail account for the iCal server and finally got it working. I list here the process of configuring and testing the system to check that each little stage is working.
    Set up a Gmail account in Apple Mail to access and test in the usual way for any email account (e.g. [email protected].);
Set the iCal server email to access the same email using the following settings:
    IMAP
    SMTP
    [email protected]
    smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 993 [x] Use SSL
    Port: 587 [x] Use SSL
    User & Pwd
    Login
    User & Pwd
    To test the settings:
    send out a test email from Apple Mail to a non-server email address that you can access to check it has been received;
    send out a test email from your non-server email account to [email protected] and check that it is received;
this tells you that the GMail account is setup correctly and working
    Testing iCal:
    I noted that iCal was deleting any emails that arrive in the inBox in Apple Mail as soon as they arrived (this is to be expected);
    test that the invites are being sent from iCal by setting an event in iCal and inviting your non-server address (you may not see any sign of this in Apple Mail but you should catch it in the iCal server log and possibly in the Gmail sent mail box);
    check that the invite is received at your non-server account and Accept it in iCal on another machine - the reply is automatically sent back;
    the replies appear in Apple Mail but are quickly deleted by iCal. But their record for you to see is left in Gmail under 'All Mail';
Accepted invites appear as a notification button on the top left hand bar on iCal where you click to acknowledge them and then the attendee is shown as a green circled tick instead of a grey circled ?.
this shows that iCal invitations are working correctly. Whenever an event is updated, all invitees should be updated by email automatically.
I hope this helps anyone - I could certainly have done with something similar when I started with looking at this.

The Error and Access logfile in the Server app under iCal server are very useful in determining any errors. I got lots of imip errors when I didn't quite have the settings right. The port is critical and it won't tell you this is the problem if it fails.

    OK,
Well I have demoted my ODR (diary.mydomain.com) to just being connected to an ODM.
Again, editing the user/groups records on the ODM doesn't give me any option to enable calendaring. However, I am able to enable calendaring for users and groups in the WGM if I connect to WGM as diary.mydomain.com. As my ical server is no longer a ODR, and only connected, is it safe to edit records on it and enable calendaring or I am still not getting this right?

  • ICal Server won't send invites to e-mail addresses

Set up a new 10.7.2 Server, enabled OD, added 6 users. Set up iCal Server, everything works fine between OD users. Problem is when you try to share a calendar with an e-mail address for someone outside the company, iCal comes back with "The server returned an error" and "Mail gateway didn't find a token in message" shows up in the iCal Server log.
We created a new dedicated e-mail account on their mail server (hosted by their ISP, not by the server I just installed) and put all the info into the iCal settings in the Server app. As far as I can tell that part is working. I also tried creating a Gmail account, but I get the same errors.
Google hasn't been much help. Only reference to the token error was from someone else's calendar server application, and wanted me to edit caldavd.plist (I checked the settings there just in case, and it all is correct.)
The server is hostings DNS for itself, but all other DNS info is being provided by their Airport Extreme.
    -Z

Today I reloaded the server in question. Downloaded 10.7.3 via the Recovery Partition, restored the OD archive, and tried to set up iCal. I have exactly the same problem.
I set up a calendar on a Lion client, and try to set it to share with someone who has an OD account. The sharing dialog closes, but no invite is ever sent. If I try to share with someone who is not in OD, I get error messages in the server log.
An entire afternoon of Googling shows a lot of people are having the same problem. Best I can tell, it seems to happen if your e-mail server is hosted elsewhere, as if iCal Server assumes that the mail server is on the same Mac. This is not the case with this setup. Their web page and domain are hosted outside as well, but we have a DNS entry made so server.domain.com forwards to the Mac Mini server inside their office. We've tested this for VPN, Remote Desktop, and FileMaker access, and all work fine.
I've tried two types of configurations, neither of which is working.
    1. Created an [email protected] account with their mail host. I used that outside mail server information for IMAP / SMTP settings, but every time I try to share a calendar the iCal error log shows IMAP login errors. Their mail server does not use SMTP authentication. They have the option to use SSL or not, but neither work.
    2. Used [email protected], and used the default localhost server info. I then tried to set up the server's built in Mail server to forward mail to their outside mail host. This started giving me
[mailgateway] 2012-04-05 19:51:05-0400 [IMAP4DownloadProtocol,client] Unhandled unsolicited response: ['OK', ['HIGHESTMODSEQ', '1'], 'Highest']
I now get that error no matter what I do, meaning something broke again.
I've gone through several Google pages referring to greylisting, the postfix, etc, but since the server is not running a Mail server, none of these apply.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Lion has been out a year, surely in that time this has been worked out. So why can't I find a solution? Everywhere I look it's either a thread starting out with the same problem I am having, followed by a dozen or so "me too" posts, or it's someone saying they managed to make it work, but their fix doesn't work for me. I'm really frustrated right now, and so is my customer.
Oh, almost forgot... now we have a new problem. FileMaker Admin requires access to port 16000, but for whatever reason the server is blocking that port. It's not running a firewall. Good to know that reloading causes more problems than it solves.

  • ICal Server, iPhone, Delegates (or lack there of) & Alerts

I have set up iCal Server, with a company-wide calendar, with all employees added as delegates. When I add an employee's CalDAV account on their 3.0 iPhone, they don't see the company-wide calendar, because iPhone 3.0 doesn't support delegates. But then when I set the company-wide iCal CalDAV on the iPhone, and set an alert, obviously every iPhone in the company receives the alert. Even when I turn off "New Alert Notices" in the iPhone settings, the iPhones still receive the alerts. I would like to avoid every iPhone in the company from receiving every alert, yet be able to view and add events to the company-wide calendar.
    Any ideas?

This doesn't answer your question but there is a way to make delegates work on the iPhone. If you are setup as a delegate of someone's calendars you can trick the iPhone into giving you full access to that calendar. For each delegate you need a separate CalDAV account setup in the iPhone which is a pain but doable for small companies.
Setup the CalDAV account with your server and your login information. Put anything you want for the description but I suggest the name of the calendar user you are gaining access to.
When done, go back into the account details and click Advanced Settings. Click the Account URL and change the end of the URL from: "\yourname" to "\Jane" (in my example, use the short name of the person you're accessing)
When you go back into your list of calendars you will see this new category with the calendars listed.

  • ICal Server installation

There seem to be a lot of threads by people like me who run into trouble setting up iCal Server (I get SACL authentication errors). I admit that I mostly get confused trying to make sense of the various problems and solutions. It'd be great if one of the experts (Tony comes to mind would consolidate the knowledge and describe the process step-by-step for two cases:
    1) iCal Server on a Server that uses ISP DNS services
    2) iCal Server on a Server that runs DNS
If I read the threads properly, that process should probably begin by a clean installation. The DNS aspects, binding, and the iCal authentication process are among the things that I have the hardest time coming to grips with. And yes, I downloaded & looked at the manuals, followed the instructions, and got absolutely nowhere.
    Thanks,
    Derk

For many services to work properly in OS X server:
    1) Server IP must have forward and reverse IP "FQDN" reachable through the DNS the server use. If the server is behind a NAT router you can't use a public IP (ISP) DNS (can be used only as forwarder).
    2) Server and clients should use (the same) private IP DNS (no public IP DNS) if on a private IP network.
searchdomain and hostname on server also important.
On server try: changeip -checkhostname to see if you got it right.
This (DNS) must be working before setting up as OD Master and most other services.

  • Can I set all existing events in a ICal Server calendar to 'private'?

I am consolidating my calendar histories. I have been able to get everything in my iCal Server calendar. But what I'd like to do is set all events before a certain date to 'private' as public/private has been lost for all items. I do want them in the iCal Server and not in a local client side calendar.
Is there a way to do this?

    Hi, Trevor!
Did you consult the online DOM documentation for something like that?
    I found the following:
    http://help.adobe.com/livedocs/acrobat_sdk/10/Acrobat10_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/ww help.htm?href=JS_API_AcroJS.88…
    http://help.adobe.com/livedocs/acrobat_sdk/10/Acrobat10_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/ww help.htm?href=JS_API_AcroJS.88…
Using AnnotRichMedia instead of media could be the key. Since media seems to be outdated, deprecated or something…
I'm out in the dark like you are with Acrobat and JS. Just consulted some of my bookmarks pointing at the SDK of Acrobat.
    Some dummy-code:
    var myRichMediaObjects = myDoc.getAnnotsRichMedia(nPage);
    Properties of AnnotRichMedia object:
    http://help.adobe.com/livedocs/acrobat_sdk/10/Acrobat10_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/ww help.htm?href=JS_API_AcroJS.88…
    for(var n=0;n<myRichMediaObjects.length;n++){
    myRichMediaObjects[n].activated = false;
Don't know much about the DOM here. Maybe there is no length property for the object that is returned by getAnnotsRichMedia() ??
    Did not try anything.

  • Setting up an iCal server?

I have followed the docs as best I can figure out. However, I am stuck on the the part:
Web Technologies Admin (page 72), "Open to the web calendar". Sorry, but what does that mean?
I have set up the server, built a bare bones web page (I can navigate to the page). I have turned on iCal in services. I have a test calendare in my personal iCal, that I would like to to tryout, but when I attempt to publish the the url (base url that pulls up the web page), I get the error, " not a valid location for this request".
The docs seem to imply that you just start the ical service, specifying the server and your web calendar is magically created... I doubt this is the case, but I'm at a loss as to what to try next.
Can anyone walk me through this?

Web calendars are part of a group collaboration on your site. When you setup wikis/blogs for a group then you can include calendars at Web -> Site -> Web services.
Under WGM select the Group and enable Calendaring for the group on the specific site from the pulldown menu.
Groups will dynamically update the Server page pointed to by http://sitedomain/groups

  • Leopard iCal Server, iPhone & MobileMe - best way to set up?

Hi there, hoping someone can help with this scenario:
In our office (approx. 30 people running Leopard), we connect to an iCal Server in order to have a shared CalDAV diary.
Currently, everyone logs in as the same CalDAV account. Within this account there are several separate calendars, one for each job number.
    "332 Blah Blah Road"
    "333 Etc Etc Street"
Our boss (and three others) have just bought new iPhone 3Gs and want to be able to:
    a) have any shared calendar changes pushed to their iPhones when they are away from the office.
    b) be able to make changes to shared calendars on the move and push them back to the iCal Server.
Would we need to get MobileMe (or several accounts) to do this? Apology for the ignorance, I have tried to look for information on this and got nowhere.
Can anyone suggest a way of getting this scenario to work? What are we doing wrong, or would we need an Exchange Server to achieve what we want?
Please feel free to patronise and start from basics!
    Many thanks!

    Hi Nicholas,
In case it's not too late for you, I'd add the following "information bits":
    - MobileMe is great for a single person. Getting multiple MobileMe's to talk to eachother may be possible, but MObileMe is clearly NOT advertised as for the small business.
That said, I still advocate all our team members to have MobileMe, just as a super-simple way to show/share images, for an added layer of backup redundancy, making transformation to newer laptops easier etc. etc.
Whilst some argue it is "too expensive", "can be had for free" etc., I am of the opinion 99 USD/y is a very small price to pay for the simplicity and comfort.
For GROUPWARE appslications (sharing calendars, contacts...), I would strongly recommend to look into KERIO Mail Server instead. It runs perfectly on our XServe, handles Outlook & Blackberry clients as well (there's always gonna be someone clinging on to a Berry-Device or using a PC until they understand how much better the Mac side is ). A 30-day demo is available, very easy to install and just make sure you don't get a conflict with your ports, as Kerio Webmail starts on port 80 (I disabled it, only allowing SSL connections) and your OS X Mailserver might run on it. Also perhaps an idea to deactivate your OS X Mail-Server in case you're using it on an XServe, if at all possible, otherwise make sure there are no port comflicts.
    Hope this helps somewhat.

  • ICal Server Set Up

My goal is to have a common office calendar in my VERY small office.
I have a mac mini (ppc) with leopard server running File Sharing, iCal Server and Web Server. File sharing works fine. The web server seems to be serving the wiki calendar pages. But the iCal Server and/or client seems to have problems. I have 2 iMacs running Leopard. I've used directory utility to make the imac's ical can see the server. A new little calendar icon appeared in each imac's ical. The icon is called "calendar" and that icon is located under a group called "server". But next to that "calendar" icon is a squiggle. Clicking on the squiggle, I get the following dialog:
This account (server) appears to be offline because of a network or
    server problem.
Request for "calendar" in account "server" failed.
    The server responded with
    "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error"
    to operation CalDAVDeleteEntityQueueableOperation.
Would you like to go online now?
Additionally, when I'm in the calendar wiki (via safari), I cannot make a new entry on the wiki calendar. This is true for the 2 imac's as well as for when I'm in the calendar wiki using safari on the server itself.
The server preferences for every user permit iCal services.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks! I have only 3 machines running leopard so far: server and 2 iMac (mariela and belleange). File sharing for the iMac's works and each imac has permission to use iCal. I'm still testing. Our needs are simple and basic: I want a common calendar and a common address book. (I'm reluctant to go back to Now Contact and Calendar.)
    The server log appears below:

  • ICal server will not work

I am running a small network on a MacPro running OS X server 10.5.4 with 2 mac clients and 2 windows clients. The OS X server was installed by an apple specialist but it is still not working properly and I find it hard to believe that it is a bug is the software as it seems to be a fundamental problem which most people would have encountered.
Each user has their home directories stored on a separate drive on the server and iCal server is running. However, when a Mac client logs into the network they iCal does not work properly. It either will not show any calendars or if it does then a new event cannot be entered.
Below is an extract from the client message log from rebooting the machine. The first problems with iCal seem to occur at 1:20:48:

Once loaded iCal does not respond and a "force quit" is the only option.
I have looked at the logs in Server Admin and I can't seem to see any problems at about the same time.
I would be grateful if someone could let me know whether this is a bug with the software or whether there is a solution. For the time being, the mac users are having to use portable home directories in order to allow them to use iCal.
    <Edited by Moderator>

    Hi
I've not long ago spotted it. It is a longish log. I would sort out that problem anyway because it can't be good for that user.
What needs to happen is a sampling of a the log server side when the problems occur for the clients. It would be a good idea if you posted a little more about how the server is configured. Are you using Server Preferences to administer the Server by any chance? What is the result of issuing this command from terminal:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Post the result. Did the apple engineer configure internal DNS & DHCP Services to accommodate the web and ical services? Is the web service running? Are you using virtual domains? Are the client macs using the Server to resolve DNS?
As you can see lots of questions. If you are using Server Preferences then I'm going to have to stop trying to assist you. Please don't think there is anything wrong with your server because you are using the application, because there is not. Neither is there anything wrong with the choices made by the original guy. It's just I don't deal with anything other than Advanced. I have little knowledge of Server Preferences. Please don't be tempted to 'convert' to Advanced thinking it may 'improve' matters. It's just as likely it will make things worse.
Consider getting the original guy back in and having him do it for you again. Who knows you may find things will go a lot smoother this time?
    Tony
