Set up Ipad for a gift

I bought an Ipad 2 for my in-laws.  Can I get it set up with some apps and the like before I ship it to them? Can I set them up on itunes?

Make it fun for them.  Help them set up their e mail.  Send them an email with links to what youmthink are the first 5 apps they should get.  With the links, they dont need to search.
From any app in the store, there is a button on the top right that is  tell a friend.    It sends them the email with a brief description and a link direct to the store page.   Get all of your siblings to pick their favories, and send the tell a friend links.

Depending on exactly what you want to do, there are a couple of ways of handling this. You may want to access teh user guide for some ideas: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
In particular, check the sections on Customizing iPad and Settings > Restrictions.

Afraid not. The iPad is not intended for multiple users.

  • How to set up iPad as surprise gift

I am going to buy my mom an iPad 3 for Mother's Day.  As I just started working full-time several months ago (I'm 22), this will be my first big present to anyone.  I even ordered a case already, and am looking at speaker docks.  I want the ipad to be perfect and fully-set up for my mom by May 13th.  My mom is almost computer illeterate; she knows how to check email, and thats about it.  I want to completely set it up for her: buy apps, save bookmarks, add music, photos, etc.  I was planning on setting up an new email address for her, registering an apple id with this email, and buying apps with a gift card.  However, my dad has an apple id that is linked to his iPhone; I realized today that they might want to end up on the same apple id.  I don't want to use my dad's apple id because they share the same email address, which my mom checks pretty frequently.  Is she going to be able to change apple id's and still keep all of the loaded content?
If that is not possible, what are my other options?
    Thanks!

You really need to get the apple id straightened out before you start, or you will pay the price forever!   You have a couple of options.  I assume your dad is cooperating with this project.  I think you are probably right about using his apple account.
Make sure you have established the second e mail address and that to works.
Log onto apple.com, and in the upper right, log into the account.  Once in the accout, click on the area where you can change you data, and add the second email address.    Apple wil verify the adress by send it an e mail, and won't do anything further until you respond to an e mail sent to that address, so watch for it.
After the address is verified, on your accout page, make that address your primary address contact from apple.  That way if apple sends confirmations for apps and things, they will go to the new address, and your mom won't see them.  Then set the pad up using the same aple Id as your dad.  Remember, you have not changed the apple id or the password, you have only changed the e mail address for contact.   ( you can change it back after the surprise)
The other suggestion...  I have given a coule of pads to folks, and one of the real fun parts for them and for you is o
Ending the box, and doing the set up.  It is a great way for them to learn enough to use it.  Press the buttons etc.  pick their own apps.  You can gift her all the apps you want, and she can learn how to download them herself.
I gave a pad to mom in law, and did pretty much what you are planning, and at the end of the day, having it all set when she openied it made it harder for her to learn, rather than easier.
But you are doing a god thing, and I am sure she will enjoy the pad.

  • How to set up ipad for elderly user

I want some ideas for setting up an iPad for my 89 year old father who has never used a computer and has some visual impairment. The only thing he wants to do is listen to audiobooks. I want the titles of the books to be no more than one click away from the desktop. I want him to be able to control the stop/start and volume with a clearly laid out dialog box on the desktop. Help please...

    Hi,
I have been looking into this subject. We are buying my father-in law an ipad for his 91st birthday in two weeks. He had unsuccessful surgery for a detached retina a couple of years ago and so has vision (not too good) in only one eye. When we were researching how and if he'd benefit from an ipad (which he wants) we weren't sure, but then I read about VoiceOver that is built into every ipad. We're all very excited about it.
    http://www.apple.com/accessibility/ipad/vision.html
Because you said they have a desktop, they can also set up Home Sharing between their desktop and the ipad if they have a wireless connection. If not, they just need an inexpensive wireless router and a little help setting it up. We're getting a $40 ish Netgear for him that we paid $80.00 for two years ago. They're practicall plug an play and need only cable modem box, which most have these days.
Your father/parents will be able to do more than listen to audio books. With an ipad he can do a lot more. He'll be able to read and hear newspapers, magazines, etc. There are many games/apps that he can buy that can exercise his brain. They will speak to him! Some months ago there was a thread that went on and on about how nurses/family membes who were finding that their senior parents/patients (some with Alheimer's) became more alert when working with someone on the ipad. It was encouraging. IF he has netflix he can watch movies on it. Your music might be on your computers from cd's. If they have music cd's at home, you can quickly upload them to their computer, put them in itunes, and sync them to the ipad, too.
VoiceOver will help with so many other things that are explained in the link I gave you earlier.
Please also check out you tube videos for using VoiceOver in the ipad. The setting up and usage videos are very good and many examples are given by blind people. (Seeing how VoiceOver even reads the apps that might be on the front page as fingers glide over them is great.)
Also, I'm not sure where you live. Many libraries have free e-books with or without audio that your parents can take out. I learned last week from someone looking for the same, that if you're in Canada there is something called CNIB where people with vision problems can get all the e-books they want. You might want to google it and see where you can get free -ebooks for your parents. Audio books can be expensive. The thread below
Please go to the link above and then check out you tube.
I wish my 86 year old Mom (vision is good) would use an ipad.
    I hope this helps.

  • Best strategies for setting up iPad for elderly person?

I hope to eventually get an iPad 3 for an elderly parent and I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it.
Here is what I was thinking:
    - get iPad.
    - set up iPad using iTunes account that I create from a spare email address I have access to.
    - get some iTunes cards via my own account and load it into the new account.
    - install apps, fiddle with settings, set up iCloud, possibly load it with photos, etc.
    - send iPad to them.
    - change email address on the new account to reflect their actual email address.
    - Is it correct in that no credit card would need to be entered by them at any point?
    - I have tweaked iChat on their laptop to auto-answer incoming video chats.  It sounds like there is no such setting on Facetime, right?   Is it still pretty easy to accept Facetime calls on the iPad (I've only used it via OS X).   From reading some past threads it sounds like there is no way to make a shortcut so that a specific contact could be called in one click (i.e. icon on dock), is that still the case?  (a Siri on iPad would help with this)
    - I currently do not do much photo sharing via Apple devices.  What is the easiest/best way to have them be able to view a gallary of images that one or more people can add things to remotely?  Do I have to turn to third-party apps to do this?
    - Any other general recommendations on getting a iPad set up for someone (especially the elderly) who are physically far away (and thus who won't get hands-on training from the person setting it up, but from people who are iPad savvy)?
I envision them mainly using it for: video chat, solitaire, email reading (not heavy email composing), light web, photo taking/sharing, etc.
    Thanks,

    Hi Captino,
Please note I sent this earlier today to the thread you posted on yesterday.
If you haven't yet, in the box near the top right on your posts only, click on receive e-mail notifications. Then you won't have to search through to find any responses you might get from the threads you are participating in.
One of my big concerns is that Apple should advertise to seniors with or without many of the issues that often accompany aging. The ipad's target audience did not start out advertising to toddlers, but we know they're using them and they are included in the new iphone 5 for photos and itunes. So let's get the increasing elderly population involved.
First, you might want to contact Apple corp offices in Cupertino and see if someone will listen to your suggestions. (I have sent them the links below.) The more Apple is aware that there is a real  need, they will hopefully increase focus and develop more to make the ipad usable for our elderly with needs, which varies from person to person.
I'd also like to suggest you start your own thread, posting in the title something like "How can an elderly person with dimentia benefit from ipad?" Then, copy the info you wrote in your post above here.
Here are some links that might interest you. The information is out there that many elderly people with needs can be helped by and are benefitting using an ipad. There are also links to support user forums.

  • How can I set up iPad for use as a customer sales tool?

I want to use my new iPad for personal and business. For my business I want to hand to a customer as a self-driven presentation on my business created In Keynote or some similar program. But I'd like to lock all personal content so the customer can only explore my business content and not access personal contacts, music, etc. Can this be done? Recommendations on apps and set-up are appreciated.

Can't be done. All the customer has to do is press the home button and they're able to access all your apps.
You either need different iPads for different purposes, or mount it in a display cabinet that blocks the home button.

  • I would like to buy an ipad for a gift for a friend that lives in Santiago,Dominican Republic.  What do I need to do to make the ipad function efficiently and properly in Santiago,Dominican Republic?

I would like to buy an ipad for a friend of mine that lives in Santiago,Dominican Republic.  How and what do I need to do as far as set up of the ipad to make sure that it functions efficiently and properly in Santiago,Dominican Republic?  The availability of wi-fi is not very good, so should I buy an ipad model that has wi-fi and cellular capability?  I am quite new to all this technology so I would appreciate it very much if someone can explain step by by step and in simple terms how the ipad needs to be set up to work in this country.

The Smart Cover only protects the front screen. You'll get scratches on the back plus it provides no protection for a small drop.
I added a screen protector as it was cheap insurance protection.
For my iPad 2, I bought an Adesso case/keyboard model WKB-2000CD http://www.adesso.com/en/component/content/article/49-coming-soon/455-wkb-2000cd .html Works great & looks good. The keyboard is easier to use than Apple's on-screen keyboard. Do a Google search using the model number to get the best price. About the same price as Apple's covers & it covers the whole iPad. Although the new iPad  is slightly thicker, it should fit this case.

  • How do i set my ipad for english and enter Netherlands as country of residence?

I live in The Netherlands but want my language set to English.
Also when I ask for an app, my billing address is in the Netherlands, but I want to set country to USA,
otherwise everything turns to Dutch language

The language of your iPad and apps (except the two stores which will be the language of the country where your account is based) should be what you set in Settings > General > International > Language
If you set your account's address to the US then you will need to be in the US in order to buy anything - and if using a credit card then that would also need to be registered in the US

  • Is there any way to set my iPad to access only one website?

I am trying to set up a set of iPads for use in an online examination and would like to be able to limit wi fi access to just one website.  Is this possible?  If so how would I do it?
    Thanks.

You might look into parental control apps. One I see a lot is McGruff. Turn safari off in restrictions, see if the mcgruff browser can be locked to one site only and, since safari is off, the only browser they should be able to use is the mcgruff one.
I've never used it but you can explore it and other parental control ones and see if they will do what you want.
You'll also want to lock out installing and downloading apps and possibly other things in the restrictions.

  • How do I set up an iPad for my mother, without her knowing what her Christmas gift will be?

I am buying my mother an ipad for Christmas.  I want to register it and load up her contacts before I give it to her.  I only have 1 day with her and want to spend it on teaching her how to use it.  Is there anyway to do it and not link it to her email.  She will instantly know and ruin the suprise if I use her email.

Set up a free email specifically to use for her Apple ID.  Handle the emails on that account during setup, then turn the account over to her after you give her the present.

  • Setting up iPad 1 3G for friend

I bought an iPad 1st Gen AT+T on ebay. I'm assuming there will be no SIM card so I ordered one from Amazon.
I want to set up this iPad for a friend who is basically clueless. I would like to  use a VIsa Gift card to activate the
the 3G service for 3 months. Will I need to put my address as billing address or can I use hers. She does have an AT+T
    account for her phone.
I haven't used an iPad 3G for a long time, but I seem to remember there was some issue with billing addresses if you are
not in AT+T territory which I am not. So, the ideal situation would be to use her address and the Visa gift card.
    Should that work okay?

    Look what I found:
fter much hassle, I got it working. Much thanks to
(Name Removed) and (Name Removed) at Apple
    For their help and suggestions.
    History:
I received my iPad 3G on Friday, 4/30/2010.
Worked great, love it!! Then I tried to activate
The AT&T 3G account. Wouldn’t accept my credit
Card apparently because of the mailing address.
I live in a small town with no mail delivery. So
Apparently my street address is not in the USPS database.
(Name Removed) of Apple suggested as a work-around
Getting a pre-paid Visa card and using that to
    Activate the AT&T account. Since it’s pre-paid,
AT&T doesn’t care about the address matching. Then
In the AT&T activation process I can enter any valid
Street address that’s in an AT&T coverage area.
I did this, using my son’s address, and it worked!!
It was a little funny though. At first it rejected my
Visa, but could have been because I just bought it an
Hour before. Maybe it wasn’t fully activated yet.
A few hours later I tried again and low and behold,
The iPad (AT&T) asked for my password. I entered the
One I was attempting to create a couple of days ago,
And it took it!! From there I just selected my data
Plan and off it went, activating my account.
Next, using the iPad, I accessed my AT&T account and
Changed my billing info (credit card and address) to
The one I’d been trying to use all along. It took it!!
    All is well.
What a goofy system. Hopefully Apple and AT&T will be
Looking at this. What a way to greet a new customer!
