Set up new iphone as new or restore to backup

I just purchased my new iphone4 today. At the store they transferred over all my contacts and got my email set up. When I came home I immediately backed up my old iphone and then proceeded to plug in my iphone4. When prompted I selected to restore to backup instead of set up as new phone. After I did that I began thinking that was not what I should have done. The folder that was combined on the iphone4 when I was at the store was no longer there (I know I can combine apps, but I am not sure how they were set up before). Plus now the email looks different than it did also, it looks just like my previous iphone did and when I was in the store it listed the mailboxes as "Yahoo" or "Gmail" not by the email addresses. So now I am thinking what else am I missing? Are there new ringtones or wallpapers that I am now missing?
How can I get my email to go back to what the iphone4 should look like?
Should I restore and then start over by setting it up as a new phone this time? Will I have to go to the at&t store to have them transfer my contacts again (I do not have outlook)?
I just wanted to ask for some advice before I go restoring things if I am not missing anything or if there is an easier way to fix it.

You haven't lost any features by restoring from backup.
You can learn how to use the software in the manual:

    Hi Mcchen425,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
As a precaution, I would suggest backing up your iPhone to your computer via iTunes as well as iCloud.  Then you can delete one of your two backups.  The article below will explain all of your options for deleting data or backups from your iCloud storage.

    Restore from backup.

  • IPhone 4 will not restore my backup to iOS7, I am getting the message your backup was corrupt or is not compatible with the iPhone that is beinng restored

Restore it as a new device first, then try again. If it still won't work, you're hosed, unless you can get hold of the old device and try backing it up again.

  • Received a replacement iphone 5. Do i set up as new or restore from backup?

Just received a replacement iphone 5. Original was backed up and during set up of the replacement it states that i cannot complete the backup as the replacement does noy have ios 7.0.3. Do I backup to an older backup? Set up as new?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In that case, you have to set up the device as a new one. The iPhone you have received has got an older iOS version than the one you had before, so now what you can do is to open Settings > General > Software Update, and install iOS 7.0.3.
Then, you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to restore the phone to default settings, so you will be able to restore the backup and use your old settings

  • Trouble setting up new device with iCloud backup

I am trying to set up a new Mac Book Pro, and a new iPad Air. I wasn't sure which to choose, set up as new or from iCloud backup. I was having challenges backing up to iCloud from my iPhone, so I chose set up as new, thinking when I logged into iCloud I could transfer the info. We used the new devices, the contacts were blank and my husband added myself and him to the Contacts.
I was able to back up my iCloud on my iPhone, so I started over from scratch with the new iPad, and chose restore from iCloud backup. the contacts and calendar are not showing up? and the only names in the Contacts are the two my husband added before.

You can check what is stored in iCloud.
    iCloud.com > login > Contacts.
Then check out Calendar and Notes from there.
If they are there then there will be a way to download (sync) them to your iPad and new Mac. I’m not an expert in this latter procedure so I will leave it to others to post such instructions.
If on iCloud you find some good Notes, back them up by mailing them to yourself.
Did you have iCloud enabled on the MBP or another Mac with a copy of you Contacts on same?  Is there a Time Machine backup of same?  If so you can recover Contacts, Calendar, and Notes from that Time Machine backup.  If so post back and I’ll post instructions on such restores.

  • IPhone 4 won't restore from backup - Not Enough Space

My wife deleted some photos from her iPhone 4 by accident and we are trying to recover them. We hooked her phone up and tried to do a restore from backup but we are getting an error saying there is not enough space on the iphone. How can that be if the backup came from the computer? How do we get the photos back or how do we get iTunes to restore the backup? Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jim

We called Apple and they told us to take it to the Genius bar and they would be able to help us restore the photos from the backup file that is on my wife's laptop. We haven't had a chance to take it in yet though. I'll try to post our results once we get in there.

  • IPad 2, restore & setup as new, then restore from backup?

    Confused yet? I am!
So here we go, yes, I'm new to the forum, I've had my iPad 2 since Oct. 2011. And No, this problem isn't in my head.
Last week, I finally updated to iOS 5.1.1, and I deeply regret doing so. I had NO issue before the update, and now, my battery is garbage.
I used to be able to go 2 - 3 days before having to charge and that's with an average of 4 hours a day. Now, after just a few hours (5) I have to charge and it takes forever. I've been working with Apple, but they having given me an option I'm happy with.
    1) Mail my unit back to them to switch out with a refurb. I am against this option as I like my unit. I didn't originally buy a refurb and I should have to accept one now. The screen on my unit is perfect, no bleed or dead pixels. I've taken immaculate care of mine and I'm afraid I'll get a unit I'm not happy with. Plus, it will be running iOS 6, which I'm not ready for.
Option two is...and this needs to be done whether I return my unit or not, is a restore and setup as new. Which means I would loose all my information buried deep within my apps. This would also install iOS 6 on my unit.
    My question is this...
If I do a Restore, Setup as new, can I then go back in and do a restore from back up, to put all my stuff back in its place.
I'd love to hear from anyone that has any insight, suggestions, experience, or comments about this.
    How did you handle it?
    What was the outcome?
Did you involve Apple in the resolution?
    Or,
Is it just not worth dealing with and I should just keep using it until it won't take a charge.
I know there have been a million posts about this, and I've read a lot of them, but I just haven't found a solution yet.
And before anyone states the obvious, ALL locations are off, all email accounts are set to manual, there are no notifications set.
In the past week, I've done 3 reset all settings, drained battery until system shut down, and did an uninterrupted full charge.
I've reset network settings. I make sure apps are closed by double tapping Home button, and done a hard reset by holding power button and home button until apple icon appears. I'm at a loss, and don't know what else to do.

First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8).  Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

  • IPhone gift: Can I restore from backup without her knowing?

    Hi
I have bought a new iphone 5S for my wife's Christmas present.
I know her Apple ID and so I know that I can restore from iCloud backup
However.... Can I download the iCloud data to her new phone without her knowing OR without it deleting the content from her old (current) phone?
It would be nice to give her it on Christmas Day all done - without all the set-up fuss that you can get.
    Thanks
    B

Plug her old phone into iTunes and back it up. Plug the new phone into iTunes and restore it from the backup you made.

  • MacBook Pro OS 10.6.6 and iPhone 6 - can't restore from backup...

    Hi,
I have been using Apple products for a long time but I am not super technical. I have a MacBook Pro that is running OS 10.6.6. Yesterday, I bought the iPhone 6. I would like to restore using iTunes or iCloud but cannot because i have iTunes 10. I have tried numerous times to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 using Software Update (Combined) and by downloading a dmg file with no success. It runs through to the end and in the last seconds I get an error. I have restarted a few times and tried running Disk Repair to fix permissions. Nothing. Now my new iPhone 6 won't work and my old one has no service. I really don't want to "Set Up as New iPhone". Buying a new computer is not really an option. Worst case scenario, I will update my iPhone 6 as a new phone and use my old phone as an iPod temporarily.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Make a Genius Appointment at the Apple Store, take your laptop in and get them to help you upgrade it.

  • IPhone 4S won't restore from backup

I left my iPhone 4S overnight to update to iOS6, but when I woke up it said it was in "recovery"(? not sure exactly, but something like this) mode and needed to be restored to factory settings. I restored it and went to get my backup from before I downloaded the update, but it isn't restoring at all, even with older versions of my backup. It says it takes 5 seconds to restore, and then is exactly the same and on factory settings. None of my contacts, settings, etc. are restoring. How can I get an old backup to restore??

Exactly the same thing has happened to me. I've been banging my head against a brick wall for 5 hours trying to fix it!!

  • When setting up my iPhone 6 I loaded an old backup of my iCloud. It is associated to an invalid email address. How do I correct that?

I have had this issue resolved before by a Help supervisor. But I cannot remember how we did it.

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • How to fix my iPhone after I accidentally restored to backup for my ipod.

It basically deleted all my pictures and contacts from my phone and basically turned it into my old ipod. So I'm just confused on how that happened, and if there's anyway to fix it. Help is appreciated! Thanks

Do you have any previous backups?  If so back it up to any other previous backup of your iphone.
