Set up remote users in Win 2012 R2 remote server so employees can access their desktop remotely
Hi we want to get rid of PC/desktops in house. We are a 10 employee firm. We want all of them access the server remotely from their own laptop etc., They mostly use MS Office and adobe reader etc., very light work. How can
we set up a virtual desktop for each of the users in the Server. I heard about Remote Desktop Services but not sure how this would work.
we are planning to get a one managed dedicated server from some hosting provider with decent config (say Xeon Server with 8 GB or more RAM with SATA or SAS drives. If you have any suggestions please feel free to comment on whom to buy. Azure wouldn't
work as we cannot install MS Office App on the remote desktop services VM!).
Do I need a separate server for AD?
Does Win SRV 2012 have option to create remote desktop for users that can log in remotely?. I understand we need RDS CAL no problem,
How can we allow users to store data - what's a best option.. We can attach a SAS/SATA drive that users can map to is one idea.
We plan on getting Office 365 E3 plan that comes with Office Pro Plus. We understand that we need volume license for office to be installed on remote server. We will be migrating email and sharepoint to O365.
Appreciate if some one could advise how this would work. Also from backup point of view, what options that we need to consider.
thank you
Hi,
If all the users only need to use same applications, you can make the server as the Remote Desktop Session host server (RDSH), install the RD licensing role and install proper
RDS CALs.
If it is a Windows Server 2012, you can refer to
Deploying the RDS Quick Start deployment type in Windows Server 2012 (for Session Virtualization)
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/10421.deploying-the-rds-quick-start-deployment-type-in-windows-server-2012-for-session-virtualization.aspx
AD is not the requirement for you.
In addition, if you also would like to access the server from Internet, you may need to do one of the following:
1. Purchase a static public IP address and connect the server to the Internet directly.
2. Purchase a domain name and bind the IP address of the server to it.
3. If the server do not connect to Internet directly, you need to configure port forwarding on your router to forward TCP/DUP 3389.
4. Setup the VPN or RD gateway server.

If i have a new 2.2 macbook w/ leopard can i use desktop remote 2.0
if i have a brand new macbook with leopard installed can i use desktop 2.0 to control my emacs in my computer lab that are all running panther but are updated to 10.3.9
windozeARD 2.2 is not supported on Leopard. At least one user (raus), though, posted here that he got ARD 2.2 to work in Leopard. It's the same work-around Apple provided for ARD 2.2 to work on Intel Macs using Tiger. From the finder, navigate to:
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteMangement
From the folder, delete (or move) the ARDAgent v3.X file. Install the 2.2 update for ARD on the Apple site. (This may be optional; the original poster just reinstalled the update to be safe.) You can reportedly now run Remote Desktop 2.2 in 10.5. This works for PowerPC and Intel Macs.
Note, though, that this is completely unsupported by Apple and may or may not work, or may cause issues. For proper support for Leopard, you need ARD 3.2.
Good luck. -
We recently switched hardware and server software Win SBS 2008 to 2012R2 for a small network roughly 40 clients (Win7 Pro / Win 8.1 Pro) about 16 running concurrently at a given time and one network printer with the printer queue residing on the DC as well.
I read that a single server environment might not be ideal in particular no fail-over but that is an accepted risk in this particular network here.
Errors:
Error 1043: Timeout during name resolution request
Error 1129: Group policy updates could not be processed due to DC not available
Error 5719: Could not establish secure connection to DC, DC not available
Occasionally but disappears after a while
Error 134: As a result of a DNS resolution timeout could not reach time server
Symptoms
On Win 7 Clients
Network shares added through Group Policy will not show sometimes
Network shares disconnect (red X) and when accessed return access authorization error after one or two clicks on the share finally grant access again
When the issue with accessing network shares occurs, it usually also affects Internet access meaning a 'server not responding' error appears in the browser windows when trying to open just any web page
nslookup during the incident returns cannot resolve error
ipconfig on client shows correct default router (VDSL Router) and DHCP / DNS Domain Controller
Also, the Win system log shows the above errors during these incidents, however, the nuimber of incidents vary from 20-30
On Win 8.1 Clients
Same as above with the slight variation for network shares apparently due to Server 2012 and Win 8.1 clients managing drive shares differently. However, network share refresh does not work with this clients. In most cases only a gpupdate /force returns
drive shares but usually only for the active session. After logoff / logon the shares are gone again.
The issue does appear to be load related since it occurs even if there are only one or two workstations active.
Server Configuration
Dell R320 PowerEdge 16GB / 4TB 7200RPM RAID10 / GBitEthernet
Zyxel 1910-48 Port Switch
VDSL 50Mbps Down / 20Mbps Up
Since the DC is the only local DNS and there are no plans to add another one or move DNS to another server, the DNS server is configured with this own address as preferred DNS with three DNS forwarders 1) VDSL Router 2) ISP DNS1 3) ISP DNS2
Currently only one Network card is active for problem determination reasons.
There appears to be no consensus concerning IPV6 enabled or disabled, I tried both with no apparent effect
I have set all network cards server and client to Full Duplex and the same speed, also disabled Offload functions within the adapter settings. Some but no consistent improvements.
Best Practice Analyzer Results
DNS server scavening not enabled
Root hint server XYZ must respond to NS queries for the root zone
More than one forwarding server should be configured (although 3 are configured)
NIC1 should be configured to use both a preferred and alternate DNS (there is only one DNS in this network)
I have found some instructions to apply changes to the clients through a host file but I would rather like to understand whether this DNS response time issue can be resolved on the server for example timing setting perhaps. Currently the DNS forwarders are
set to 3 second.
Since a few people have reported issues with DNS but most are working with multi DNS, DC environment I could not really apply any suggestions made there. perhaps there is anyone like me who is running a single server who has overcome or experience the same
issues. Any help would be appreciatedHello Milos thx for your reply.. my comments below
1. What does it "switched"? You may mean migration or new installation. We do not know...
>> Switched is probably the incorrect term, replaced would be the appropriate wording. Before, there was a HP Proliant Server with SBS 2008 with distinct domain and now there is a Dell Server with MS 2012 R2 with a distinct domain. Client were
removed from one (SBS) domain and added to the new Server 2012 domain. Other components did not change for example same Network Switch or VDSL Router, Workstations and Printer
2. Two DCs are better alternative. Or backup very frequently. There are two groups of administrators. Those who have lost DC and those who will experience this disaster in near future.
>> Correct, and I am aware of that
3. NIC settings in W 7 and W 8.1, namely DNS points to DC (...and NOTHING else. No public IP or that of router DNS.))
>> Correct, this is how it's currently implemented. Clients point to DC for DHCP and DNS and Default Router, no public IP or DNS. The only references to ISP DNS exist on the VDSL Router itself as provided through ISP when establishing VDSL
Link and the list of Forwarders in the DNS Server configuration. However, I have just recently added the ISPs DNS as forwarders for test purposes and will probably learn tomorrow morning whether this had any effect for better or worse.
4. Do nslookup to RR on clients. RR branch is saying client basic info on LDAP parameters of AD.
>> Will post as soon as available
5. I do not use forwarders and the system works
>> Ok, does this mean it works for you in a similar or the same infrastructure setup or are you saying it is not required at all and I can remove any forwarder in a scenario like mine? If not required can you explain a bit more why it is not
required apart from that it does work for you that way?
6. DHCP should sit on DC (DHCP on router is disabled)
>> Correct, no other device is configured to provide DHCP service other than DC and DHCP is currently running on DC
7. NIC settings in DC points to itself (loopback address 127.0.0.1)
>> Are you sure this is still correct and does apply to Server 2012? I am reading articles stating that it should be the servers own IP but local loop or should this be added as alternate DNS in addition to the servers own IP?
8. Use IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS whenever you change DNS settings.
>> OK, that was not done every time I changed some settings but I can do that next week. Reboot alone would not suffice, correct?
9. Test your system with dcdiag.
>> See result below
10. Share your findings.

Set up diff users, diff libraries
I thought I knew how to do this, but how do I set up a second ipod under a different user name (with non-admin privledges) so that they can have their own library? I thought that by downloading iTunes under their user name would do it, but apparently they have to have admin privs. I did that for an experiment, but as soon as I launched iTunes it immediatley pulled in the entire main libary of 4k songs that I have...way too much for their 2Gig nano. How do I set this up so that they can populate the libary selectively?
Delete contents of library then add only what you want.

ISDB30 remote user access options! help.
We have ISDN30 here, what are the options to allow remote users to dial into the ISDN30 system to grant them access to our LAN?
apparently ISDN30 should support thisDirect ISDN PE Dial-in Remote Access for the LAN.
The remote user initiates a PPP or MLP connection to the NAS/PE using ISDN. The NAS/PE accepts the connection, and a PPP or MLP link is established.

Win 7 Client cannot access Win 2012 share by domain name
Hello Everyone,
We have Windows 2012 R2 Server configured as Domain cum File Server Role,
There are 20 Win7 Clients / Domain Users who access and used their specific folder on server with \\Servername\Foldername
After some hour (not fixed) for some users (not specific) the server path goes unavailable, but the same folder is accessible with IP address like \\192.168.1.1\Foldername. and after rebooting Win7 Client we can again access the server folder with name.
This happen to any users anytime and the same time other users can access their folder by name,
Please help me on this issue..
Thanks in Advance> After some hour (not fixed) for some users (not specific) the server
> path goes unavailable, but the same folder is accessible with IP address

This is a kerberos issue.
By default, tickets (especially the TGT which is issued at logon) have a
live time of 8 hours or so (can be adjustet). If this ticket expires and
cannot be renewed (due to a lack of connectivity to a DC or whatever
infrastructure issue), Kerberos fails and ressources cannot be accessed
via name.
IP on the other hand always uses NTLM and thus still works.

How can I make one computer server at Home for access of SQL Server 2012/2008
Hi All,
Sorry for this basic question but I am zero in networking. I will be very grateful if someone guides what should I do to make one of my home PC as server. Scenario is as follows:
I want to give training to few students about SQL SERVER T-SQL.
I have one Laptop using SQL Server 2012 having Windows 7 Pro(Laptop Master-want to make this server). I have other laptop running Windows 7 pro and got SQL SERVER 2008. My students have mix of laptops including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows
8. All students have SQL SERVER 2008 installed and working.
Q1: I actually want to make Laptop Master(explained in above paragraph) as server and want other laptops to access that master server in home network. I will install sample exercise database on server and students will be writing queries to access
data.
Q2: can I secure sample database from students who can copy sample database from server?
Q3: can students run queries remotely sitting their home?
Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards
A K
AdnanHi itsadnan,
According to your description, if you want to make your Laptop as Server, and your student can log in your SQL Server 2012 instance, you need to ensure that your computer and student’s computers are the same domain, and you enable TCP/IP, name pipes protocol
in SQL Server Configuration Manager, your SQL Server 2012 instance is allowed to connect remotely and your student install SQL Server Manager Studio 2012 as client tool in their computer, and you create the related login name for your students. For more information,
see:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/walzenbach/archive/2010/04/14/how-to-enable-remote-connections-in-sql-server-2008.aspx
According to your requirement, in actual, since your students install SQL Server 2008 on their computer, you totally can ask your student to install the sample exercise database in their SQL Server. For example, there are many resource about sample database
in Website, which is helpful for student to learn database technology, such as
AdventureWorks databases for SQL Server 2008. From SQL Server Management Studio, they can attach an AdventureWorks database, then write queries to access data.
Since you have SQL Server 2008 in your other laptop, you can create the sample exercise database, and student can install this database via backup and restore, then write queries to access data and send to you for checking if it is right.
Note: Due to backwards compatibility, The students could not restore SQL Server 2012 database in their SQL Server 2008 instance.

Can't pair apple remote to mbp
I've been searching for a while now but all the solutions found did not fix the pairing issue I encounter between my Macbook Pro and the apple remote.
I've a Apple TV and a Macbook Pro. Both I want to control with a apple remote. Now pairing should do the trick as the device will only listen to the paired remote. I've paired the Apple TV but I can not get the remote paired to my MBP. Following the instructions on apples website does not work.
Solutions found:
Hold Menu + Right - FAIL
Hold Menu + Play - FAIL
Checked all other key combinations - FAIL
However the remotes woring fine using them just made sure they work correct. I checked the functioning of the remote by holding it in front of the webcam. It showed the IR light on cam so the remotes are functioning well. (IR is visible on CMOS cameras)
Anybody a bright idea on how to pair the remote to my MBP?
Thanx in advance.Hi Sig,
That box is not checked. Thanx for the thoughtful idea.
I found the cause of the issue about an hour ago. Within XBMC I had the apple remote active. Although the application is not running it did prevent me from pairing the remote. Once turned of in XBMC I was able to pair the remote using the menu+play key combination.
Thanx again for your thought. -

i have both "user processes and root user processes running all of the time
i have never set up a root user
I live with my boyfriend who has a mac - ipad and iphone- we use the same wireless network
He has vuze and bit torrent which both i cant seen to run properly as the way they are safed or locked i can not access the files - he also has vmware fusion- again i am unable to run it -
I was told by a friend to turn on my data and watch it to see which programs or applications that I have could be possibly malfunctioning- since then I have notices in my data the following:
there are ports on my connections which i have looked up and are all associated with hacking - 5353-5433-6401-5223--80- so many more I cant bare to look through all the data I have saved- I am not technology savy - the whole process of trying to figure out if this is true or even possible is emotionally and mentally draining-
in my data there are key logs some short some long- some private some public?
key logs
which have information such as -
encodin=UTF-8"?><DOCTYPEplist PUBLIC"-aplle//dtdplist 1.0//EN
key com.apple OTAcrashcopier.successfulSubmissionTime<\key>
array
after multiple list with temperature 1 through 8- which each have a list
<real>a number<real>
it says key com.apple.springboard.thermallevels key array
<key> adlogcreation date</key>
<key>metadata</key>
<dict>
<key>ADuserIntefaceLanguage<key/>
<string> en </string>
<key> adusersetregionformat<key/>
<stiring> US </string>
<dict/>
then a list of
<Key>ad scalars<key/>
<dict>
<key/> appActivationCount.com.apple.ApStore<key>
integer 1 interger
and it then does that for each one of my applications including
count maps
mobilesms
preference
mobilemail
mobilephone
mobilesafari
key appbackgroundactive time
integer 0 interger
and goes through a list of keys associated with again each of my apps
and so on and so on
another key log-
7deviceid- a bunch of letters and numbers

How to set NTFS and share permissions for Users share for home directories in Server 2012
I have a new Server 2012 server, and I want to set up a Users share, that will contain subfolders of each user's username and contain their home directory. But what do I set the share and NTFS permissions as on the root level, lets call the folder
Users? Is the following older article the correct permissions I need?
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/274443Hi RJO22,
You can choose configure the Folder Redirection, Folder Redirection enables you to redirect the location of specific folders within user profiles to a new location, such as
a shared network location. Folder redirection is used in the process of administering user profiles and roaming user profiles. You can configure Folder Redirection using the Group Policy Management Console to redirect specific user profile folders, as well
as edit Folder Redirection policy settings.

Remote Desktop connection from Macbook to Win 2012 TS
One of our users purchased a new Macbook (OS X Yosemite) and installed the MS Remote Desktop app to do work from home. We've been trying to connect, we get to the logon screen, but there is a message that the user does not have Allow Logon through
Terminal Services right. I've checked the rights, and the user can log in remotely from other workstations, so rights are not the issue. We are using Remote Desktop version 8.0.14 (Build 25823).
Any help would be appreciated.Hi,
How you are trying to remote desktop (either by IP address or Password)?
Did you find any specific error\log for your issue?
Please try to reinstall the app and collect log from below path for further research.
Microsoft Remote Desktop>About Microsoft Remote Desktop>Send log via email
Apart you can check this article for more information.
Hope it helps!
Thanks.
