Set up VAT on server 2012 R2 now WIn7 computers won't activate?

I recently install the Volume activation tools onto a server 2012 box to activate the new servers we are bringing on line to retire some older ones. Now i know this key will do win 8 and '12 boxes, and thats the KMS key I installed.  But today one
of our helpdesk guys was trying to deploy some windows 7 computers and got an error when trying to activate them "software licensing service reported that the computer could not be activated.
The count reported by your key management service (kms) is insufficient ".  This windows 7 image already has the
MAK in the image we deploy, and we've never had a KMS set up for windows 7and none was entered into the server when it was set up.  I tried to put in the KMS key for win 7 into the server 2012 box but it just errors out.  So I"m a little
confused as to why all of the sudden it's trying to authenticate against this server, and how do I get a windows 7 key in that server 2012 box?

Hi ,
"KMS can activate both physical computers and virtual machines. To qualify for KMS activation, a network must meet the activation threshold: KMS hosts activate client computers only after meeting this threshold. To ensure that the activation threshold
is met, a KMS host counts the number of computers that are requesting activation on the network. For computers running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the activation threshold is five. For computers running Windows Vista or Windows 7, the activation
threshold is 25. The thresholds include client computers and servers that are running on physical computers or virtual machines."

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.

Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

  • Deleted failed DC from the domain (Server 2012 R2) - Now after doing metadata and DNS cleanup, I can no longer promote a new DC to the domain

I work for a university and teach IT courses to undergrad and graduate students. The details below are pertaining an isolated lab environment
I had a storage failure in my lab and the DCs became corrupt. This is a university lab environment so there isn't anything crucial on here. I just would rather avoid rebuilding the domain/forest and would rather use this as a learning experience with my
    students...
So after the storage failed and was restored, the VMs hosted became corrupt. I did a NTDSUTIL to basically repair the NDTS.dit file but one of my DCs reverted to a state before DC promotion. Naturally, the domain still had this object in AD. After numerous
failed attempts at trying to reinstall the DC on the server through the server manager wizard in 2012 R2, I decided that a metadata cleanup of the old failed object was necessary.
Utilizing this article, I removed all references of the failed DC from both AD and DNS (http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm)
So now that the failed object is removed completely from the domain and the metadata cleanup was successful, I then proceeded to re-install the necessary AD DS role on the server and re-promote to the existing domain. Pre-Requisites pass but generate some
warning around DNS Delgation, and Dynamic Updates (delegation is ignored because the lab is isolated from external comms, and dynamic updates are in fact enabled on both my _msdcs and root domain zones).
Upon the promotion process, I get the following error message (also worth mentioning - the account performing these operations is a member of DA, EA, and Schema Admins)
    The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=domainVMDC1,CN=Servers,CN=Default-
First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=school,DC=edu on the remote AD DC domainVMDC2. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions.
"While processing a change to the DNS Host Name for an object, the Service Principal Name values could not be kept in sync."
As you can see, this error seems odd considering. Now that I'm down to a single DC and DNS server, the sync should be corrected. I've run a repadmin /syncall and it completed successfully. Since then, I've run dcdiags and dumped those to a text as well and
    here are my results...

From what I can gather, there is a definite DNS issue but I don't have any stale records to the old DC stored anywhere. I've tried this with a new server as well and get similar errors...
At this rate I'm ready to rebuild the entire forest over again. I'm just reluctant to do so as I want to make this a learning experience for the students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there seems to be some errors. The one that I did correct was the one around the _msdcs NS record being unable to resolve. For whatever, reason the name wasn't resolving the IP but all other NS tabs and records were. Just that one _msdcs
sub-zone. Furthermore, the mentioning of any connections to root hint servers can be viewed as false positives. There is no external comms to this lab so no communication with outside IPs can be expected. Lastly, they mentioned a connectivity issue yet mention
that I should check the firewall settings. All three profiles are disabled in Windows Firewall (as they have been the entire time). Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Client won't connect to Host.

Hi I have a server with 2012 R2 and Hyper-V is installed. I have set my VM's up and everything on the server is working perfectly. I installed the hyper-v role on my Win 7 x64 machine and it will not connect to my server. I ended up calling in to microsoft
and they have determined it's a bug. I really need a work around does anyone know of a work around?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
You can install the Windows Management Framework 4.0, then use PowerShell to manage the Hyper-V.

  • Enable/Disable VMQ Setting on VMs in Server 2012 - Hyper-V

We have a cluster of 2012 Server Core where each one holds about 40 VMs. We are concerned that the limited VMQs on each node are full of low priority VMs instead of those that could really benefit.  Indeed, this article says VMQs should be treated
    as a scarce resource:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg162704(v=ws.10).aspx
However, it is not clear how to choose which VMs get to use the VMQ. There is a check box in VM Settings > Network Adapter > Hardware Acceleration called "Enable virtual machine queue", and it appears to be checked on all VMs by default.
I can uncheck it manually, but I cannot find a PowerShell way to affect that checkbox.  We also have SCVMM 2012 SP1, and I cannot find any way to choose VMs to use VMQ there either.
So if it is true that I need to choose the VMs using VMQ, how can I do it with PowerShell, since there are so many VMs?

A basic idea to help you get started:
    Get-VMNetworkAdapter <criteria> | Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VmqWeight 0
There are a lot of ways to trim this up to get it to do exactly what you want.
    Get-VMNetworkAdapter documentation.
    Set-VMNetworkAdapter documentation.

  • My Server 2008 standard 32/64 bit won't activate...

It says "my Key is in use"... to purchase another key, the link provided takes me to no where I can do that.
Am I not allowed to "transfer" this lic to my new hardware?
Yes, I activated once before and then the hardware failed, so I purchased new machine... Old machine is not working...
How can I re-activate using my old key? I also tried to do it over the phone and it says "my product installation is invalid"...
    Thank you for any insight,

The whole product and installation sounds odd to me. The contents of the CD's are all basically the same with the different versions. An OEM set usually has drivers added and would have a vendor label such as Dell or HP rather than a Microsoft label. If
a Retail boxed version, the Microsoft CD's have a holographic appearance. As for packaging that can vary, I can't say. The only way to get a sticker is through OEM where it would be attached to the box on receipt, or in a retail box.
There are thousands of cases of companies and individuals selling pirated/forged copies, though most often they use a Volume license key rather than MSDN, I won't go into why.
Where did you purchase the software? You are always best to buy from an OEM vendor or a Microsoft partner, just for this reason. The "deals" found on the internet often turn out to be pirated or illegal sources. The pricing doesn't usually vary that much.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
If two Microsoft support staff have given you more or less the same answer it sounds like you have a pirated set, or somebody changed keys on installation.
    Rob Williams
Yes, the MS staff have given me pretty much the same answer, the real problem IS I just purchased another product that looks very simular in every way to this product, only I haven't openned it yet. So I emailed this new vendor and they assure me its good.
But I'm still skeptical. I do have a paper trail on this new one, as far as the old one goes, I really have no idea where I purchased it from... I thought it was from ebay, but my paypal account has no record for the amount I remember paying... Niether does
my CC... that leaves my ATM and I will have to go through my paper statements to find this amount to see who scammed me.
I have purchased many OEM software from newegg.com and I feel they have a good reputation, I don't see this old purchased in my records with them.
I think I'm going to try this new software out, just answer two questions if you could, please...
1- MSDN lic, can I use it a second time? for example if I upgrade to another computer more than 90 days from now, can I use this lic to install again? And lets suppose I purchased a MSDN essentials lic package which has 10 win7, 1 server2008, 1 sql,
and 1 other I forget, but can't I reinstall all these lic on different hardware to test my developing software?
The whole thing doesn't make any sence to me, even though it IS a MSDN lic, and as you said the CDs are pretty much all the same program.
2- OEM lic, I have reinstalled up to five times before being asked to speak over the phone that "its installed on one computer", I guess to record my response. I understand OEM is suposed to be installed or supplied with a new machine to the end user other
than the computer builder, and I have had min problems reinstalling the software in the past. And its not supposed to be transfered. I guess theres no question here.
Thanks Rob, for all the help...

  • WPA key was changed to WEP now other computers won...

The WPA key on my router was recently changed by the Go To Assistace help. It's now WEP. I always thought WEP was at least 10 characters but they still usd my 9 digit WPA key. I share a flat with 3 others. The main computer that was used to change it was Vista. Onee using XP changed his WPA to WEP using the same key and it worked. The other 2 using Windows 7 can't change, when they change to WEP it's saying not enough character you need at least 10. Is there a way to allow the guys to connect using WIN 7?
    Thanks in Advance.

is there any reason you have changed to WEP?  it is easily hacked so someone couls hack your router and get free wifi.  if no reason the change back to more secure WPA2

  • Remote Desktop in Server 2012 is inaccessible from outside of LAN

We have a server 2012 machine it was setup and accessible via Remote Desktop for months.  A few days ago we wiped it and did a fresh install of Server 2012.  Now we can not remote to the server from outside of the LAN, even though it is setup exactly
    as it was before.
Here is a checklist of things I have checked while trying to figure out the break:
Router/firewall is forwarding port 3389 to the correct internal static IP of the server.  Port forward test tools online confirm the port is open.
Windows firewall is set to allow all connections for Remote Desktop on 3389.  Also tried turning off firewall completely, does not fix the issue.
Allow remote connections is enabled in System Properties, and users have been added to the list of allowed user
Additional info:  The server is also a standalone Active Directory and Domain Controller.
Remote desktop connections work fine while in the office on the LAN.  When remoting to the external IP, it doesn't work, even though it did only days before we re-did the server.
    Thanks!

What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
Yes, I am using the same client OS.
I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP.
It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Windows Server 2012 as NTP Server for Windows Server 2008R2 Domain Controller

We have one domain with 3 Windows Server 2008R2 DC's. Our Edge router is configured to get the time from the internet, and was our timesource for the PDC emulator. But lately we have migrated our major routers to Cisco IOS15, and now the timeservice on the
PDCe is unable to fetch the time. This is a known bug, as you can read here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ja-JP/b16de048-8642-4799-b85a-ad092e17dd47/windows-server-2012-ntp-version-compatibility
Now I've found out that Windows Server 2012 does sync with the router. That's our DirSync server, and is in the same VLAN as our DC's. So I thought: I'll set up the Windows Server 2012 as new timeserver, so our PDCe can sync with that server. (Compony
policy is that DC's don't talk to the internet). Everything seems alright.
    I've set:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:<IP of router>,0x8 /syncfromflags:manual
    w32tm /config /reliable:yes
    Changed the registry with:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\TIMEPROVIDERS\NTPSERVER - Enabled:1
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\Config - AnnounceFlags:A
And stopped and started the W32Time service. I can see that the Windows 2012 server is fetching the correct time, and checked with NBTSTAT -NA that it's listening on port 123.
But our PDCe doesn't sync. (also changed the config so it has the 2012 server as timesource). Get the EventID 47:
Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer <w2012server> after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS
name. The error was: The peer is unreachable.
    What more can I try?

It only shows me the 3 DC's:

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.
    I have two problems.
First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, at
logoff, the system event log contains these errors:
The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.
The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:
It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected"
before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?
    Second:
Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved
    the problem described below.
My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk
file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD and
always logs on with a temporary profile.

We experience less to zero problems after an outage with our User Profile Disks when we use the option: "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk". Other then when we use the other checkbox (even though all checkboxes
    underneath are checked).
Our test setup was, an RDSH 2012 r2 server(s), with an 2012r2 server holding the share.
We first tried the "store all user settings" for the User Profile Disk, we logged several accounts onto our RDSH Server we then disconnected our server which holds the share to simulate an outage. After about 5 minutes we connected the
server again holding the share. When the share comes back online, we logged off the users and logged them back in. The result was a valid profile for all the accounts including their last changes from before the share got disconnected.
The exact same test was done with the option: "Store only the following folders on the user profile disk" with all checkboxes underneath checked, which gave us corrupt profiles.. We also did these tests by giving the server holding the share a reboot instead
of an disconnect from network. This gave us the same result. Each test was done at least 2 to 3 times..
I hope others can confirm this as well in their situation, as it seems to be a bug within that specific checkbox.
Looking at the above tests, the best way in my test cases were to exclude the default folders (f.e.: \Documents) if you would like to redirect them instead of using them inside your User Profile Disk. Redirects can be done through GPO Folder redirection
options or GPO registry combined with Environment Variables.
Even after several attemps to simulate an outage, i get left with consistent profiles. I've now also included an hard reset of my virtual machine (that gave the same results as a disconnect of the network card). This was all done through using the: "Store
all user settings in the user profile disk". The other option left us with inconsistent profiles. I hope others can confirm this as well..
Looks to me that the type of connection towards the User profile happens different. You can see this when looking at the C:\users\<username> and subfolders if you use user profile disks. The 2 options show different symbols as well.

  • Unable to login Windows Server 2012 after making local policy changes

Experts, we have modified the local policy setting on the windows server 2012 and badly it was domain controller now none of the users are able to login to the server. After entering the user name and password it will launch till welcome screen then it errors
out saying user name or password incorrect. below are the steps which we followed
    1. Policy setting is located in Computer Configuration\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options \Network security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos values change from Not Configured to DES_CBC_MD5
    2. changed user attribute msDS-SupprtdEncryptionTypes to 2 , this account we were used for kerberos authentication.
    3. Logged off from the server and then server doesn't allow any user to login.
    regards,
    Jakk

Have you tried connecting to the server from a 2nd DC? Have you tried installing the RSAT tools on a domain member server and modify the offending policy ?
last choice would be restart the DC into safe mode.
