Set up VNC on time capsule behind uverse?

Please Help....
I want to have the ability to VNC into my machine remotely. Along with a handful of other things I use, plex, back to my mac, remote access to the time capsule HDD, ect. I had this all setup before perfectly with Time Warner using a dyndns.com account and my time capsule (worked flawlessly)
Unfortunately I am stuck using Uverse in my new apartment with a 2wire router/modem as it's my only ISP option.
I have a time capsule plugged into the 2wire (3801HVG) and the only way I can get VNC to work (port 5900) is to put my machine into DMZ mode and the time capsule in bride mode. I'm just afraid that this will be not very secure even with the software firewall turned on in my system prefs. With this setup my machine has the same public IP as the 2wire– essentially does not have a private ip. -"hello world here is my iMac!"
Although with this setup I went to canyouseeme.com and after testing various random ports it could only see me on 5900. Which is exactly what I want but I'm still worried about my iMac's ip being the same as my public ip.
I tried to port forward just the port I want to use in the settings for the 2wire (gateway.2wire.net) but it does not connect. Only if I put the machine in DMZ mode does it work.
I've tried so many different setups and spent hours digging through the interwebs and I just cannot seem to make it happen.
things I've tried / info you should know:
1. disabling routing all together on the 2wire (not possible with my model I found out)
2. tried separately putting both devices in DMZ mode (my machine, time capsule)
3. forwarding ports on 2wire and time capsule
4. time capsule in bridge mode, sharing a public ip, distributing a range of ip's
5. I also have the wireless function of the 2wire router off
6. I have tv through them as well
7. I put in my own DNS servers from opendns.com
8. called ATT and they attempted to open the ports for me which worked at first then I realized they put my machine in DMZ mode, then they transferred me to another company who wanted to charge me $150 for a week of support. (yuck)
Is there anyone out there that could point me in the right direction to the best way to set this up? Or is it safe having my public ip the same as my iMacs?

Hello! Anyone out there have authoritative info on getting Back to My Mac working without opening DMZ using uverse 2wire router? Is opening DMZ very risky even if you keep appropriate firewalls in place?
I agree Uverse were wanks for this: the tech who installed my system said it would work just as it was w prior service (ie BTMM working perfectly). Now, I discover I can't remotely login, and ATT tries to farm me off to some $150 tech service for what they should have done @ the outset.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
1) The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
2) Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule. Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

Airport Time capsule behind cisco router download speed

My airport time capsule is connected to the internet in bridge mode via a cisco router.
The cisco router provides a 99Mbps download speed. However, when I " bridge" my time capsule in between (wired) the speed slows down to 9 Mbps.
I have already tried to assign a static DHCP IP to my time capsules MAC address and disabled DMZ for that specific IP address, but am failing to get the speed up to par.
Any suggestions?

Manual port-forwarding to Time Capsule behind firewall (NVG589)

A happy new year to all. I'm writing seeking help with my computer setup in a well-connected home. In short, here is what I want to do: I want to get access to my latest-gen Time Capsule (wireless AC) from outside my house, so that I can read or write files on the 2TB HD on my time capsule, using the Back to My Mac feature in the Time Capsule (with my Apple ID). I have no interest in sharing screens or anything else, just in the data on the drive.
Now, my current setup, which otherwise works like a charm.
ATT Uverse's Motorola NVG589 is the incoming modem/gateway/firewall for my entire house (using their 'Power' service, the fastest): it is possible via various tricks and hacks to put the NVG589 into 'near-bridge mode' or to root the modem via and exploit and through it into full bridge mode (which the Motorola NVG589 is capable of, but ATT does not expose that functionality [imagine the tech calls!]). I'm resisting the temptation to do so, because I don't want to the run the risk of messing up service to our house, and a call to ATT tech support. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The Motorola NVG589 has its DHCP service on and doles out IP addresses to everything else in the network (thankfully it also has a hidden mDNS system, too, allowing me Bonjour functionality inside my whole house). The Time Capsule, however, has a static-IP that I've assigned, and I also have a DHCP reservation for the Time Capsule in the NVG589's DHCP table.
One crucial thing is that the Motorola NVG589 does not expose UPnP or NAT-PMP to the user, which means that I'll have to do the work manually to allow externally-originating traffic to pass through the Motorola NVG589 to the Time Capsule.
Apple's latest Time Capsule 2TB unit, in bridge mode, so that its IP address is the one given it by the Motorola NVG589 (192.168.1.x, not the usual 10.0.0.x that the TC would give out were it the router). No double-NAT, in other words. The Time Capsule is solely a wireless access point and a passive shared disk (and my target for Time Machine on my Mac).
Nothing else on my home network needs to be accessed from the outside world, no gaming, no servers, no Back to My Mac for any individual Mac computer (we have four).
So what I'm looking for is help knowing what holes to poke into the NVG589's firewall to direct to my time capsule. I've searched through many docs here on Apple's support site, and the number of potential ports I could open is dizzying. Security concerns require that I open the necessary ports, and no more.
I'd be grateful for any help.

I connected one of devices that I was trying to reach directly to the U-Verse modem and the port forwarding doesnt work anymore. This must be somthing in the way I reconfigured the U-Verse modem to work with my new TC, becuase it used to work jsut fine.
I have a U-Verse modem model number 3801HGV. I have a new TC with a 3TB HD but I don't know the specifcs of what generation is it. It is new and dual band WiFi... that is why I am trying to use it as a wireless access point behind my At&T modem/router.
As far as the details go, I will explain. The port forwarding worked before I added the TC, so I'm sure I just dont have them working together yet. The devices that I want to reach from my iPhone and iPad are a Foscam 8910W IP camera, and a Neptune Apex aquarium controller. Both devices have static IPs and configured with ports 8080, and 8090 respectivly. The IP camera is connected to the TC wirelessly and the Apex is a little different...it is connected to a Sonos (wireless music media) bridge via a ethernet patch cable. The Sonos bridge is connected to the Sonos wireless network (assume it is a dedicated frequency) which originates at another Bridge that is physically connected to the TC with a ethernet cable. Sounds weird, but it works as that is one of the features the the Sonos has is to offer. I think it is similar to a wirless gaming adapter in that sense.
As far as port fowarding goes, I configured within the U-Verse router to open up the two IP ports 192.168.X.X:8080 for the Apex and 192.168.Y.Y:8090 for the Foscam in the Firewall section called "Applications, pinholes and DMZ". I would use my cellphone when away from home by putting my public IP along with the correct port number to get access to the assocated device (ex.99.56.289.34:8080). The phone was on a cellular signal and not tethered to the wireless network. My public IP always stays the same so I don't have to worry about that variable.
Again, all this used to work, but now when I added the TC I cant access it externally. Any suggestions to get this to work would be apprected.

Time Capsule behind Cisco WRVS4400N

I have tried adding a time capsule to my existing network, but after setting it up and doing the manual setup, the Time Capsule couldn't be reached by any MAC just Windows PC.
TC is behind a Cisco WRVS4400N connecting by ethernet cable. Always when I try to connect a MAC to it I got a connection failed error. I followed some post here doing a hard reset and setting TC up as Internet (Off -Bridge Mode) and wireless OFF with no success.

I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

Having very difficult time setting up and running time capsule and airport

I am having a very difficult time setting up and running airport express and time capsule. My time machine is not being recognized by my mac. The amber light keeps blinking. I'm ready to stsrt over.

#3 for itunes streaming. I reset the base station and eventually was able to get the backup working and now my green light is on. Next I'd like to be able to play itunes using Airport Express and have connected to my stereo receiver in another room.

Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <existing TC's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
Enable AirTunes (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

How to set up a second Time Capsule as a Hard Drive?

Hi, I have a macbook pro and the older version of Time Capsule for back up. I was needing more space in my hard drive, so I went shopping for an external hard drive today. The largest drive they had in store here was a 1TB lacie. As I need more space than that, the salesperson suggested me getting another Time Capsule and use it as a hard drive, so I did. How do I set it up without using it as a back up device? Will my older time capsule back up the files from the new Time Capsule as well?

Sorry but you got really bad advice.
The TC is much slower than the slowest USB drive plugged into your computer..
It is totally unsuitable for using to store files. This is regularly asked. I have stored a standard reply.

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
Major issues.
1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

Take it back to the store and order a 3TB external drive with the fastest interface you have available and can afford.
Thunderbolt being hugely fast and hugely expensive.. usb3 is cheap.. same as usb2 now and very fast. Only the latest Macs have it.. then FW800 then USB2.

Setting up a new Time Capsule - WAN or Ethernet quandry

Just got a new TC - I am hoping to have it host (or extend) my wireless network off a wired foundation that has a cable modem. I am struggling with which hard-wire port I can use to get it access to the internet. I try plugging the wire into the WAN port and the TC just disappears. I switch it to an Ethernet port and the Airport utility cries foul that I don't have anything in the WAN port! My Cable Modem is buried deep in the basement with a d-link WAN hub connected to it, sharing a wired network through the house. I was under the impression the TC would work (and talk to the internet) if you only hooked it to the rest of your wired network (using the Ethernet ports.) Is that not so? Does it need to be the go-between for your Cable Modem & Home wired network?

Since you have a router ahead of the Time Capsule, please check to make sure that you have your TC set for Bridge Mode as follows:
Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
At the bottom of the next page the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
In this setting, it does not really matter whether you have the ethernet cable from the router plugged into the WAN or LAN port as they all behave the same when the TC is in Bridge Mode.
You may need to restart your modem and router ahead of the TC and you should have internet.

Problem setting up an AirPort Time Capsule

I am trying to link a new AirPort Time Capsule (2TB) to my iMac and MacBook Pro.
While the machines 'recognise' the AirPort, neither can connect to it as the AirPort is not connecting to the WiFi.
Do I need to link the AirPort to the modem directly (by ethernet cable) to set it up initially?
If yes, can I then disconnect the AirPort form the modem and move it to another room where I want to use it?

The Time Capsule needs to stay connected to the modem using an Ethernet cable at all times. Please refer to the illustration in your Setup Guide for the Time Capsule.
Ethernet cabling can be run 330 feet, or 100 meters, with virtually no signal loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule just about anywhere that you want.

Problems with setting up my new Time Capsule.

I've searched through internet several times now and still can't find the answers...
I got an AirPort Time Capsule (3 TB) for Christmas and tried to get it to work today.
When I connected it to the modem (ethernet) and then plugged it in, on my MacBook Air (OS X, Version 10.9) I clicked on the Time Capsule link (or whatever it was called) in the WiFi bar, then did everything I was told to do (filled in the information such as the name of my WiFi, named the 'base' - I mean the Time Capsule; I don't really know how it's called in English since I'm not a native -, blah blah, and then restarted the modem... After a few minutes long wait the only thing that I've recieved was a 'Sorry, something went wrong'. - Or something similiar.) After this happened, I could no longer see the 'Time Capsule link' in the WiFi bar and had to reset the Time Capsule itself.
So here's the question... Does anyone know what to do? Any answer will be much appreciated.

We are seeing more and more that auto setup is simply failing.. The problem is Apple preselects certain preferred outcomes from their point of view rather than work with what exists.
But we need some facts before we can tell you how to fix it.
What modem do you have? Type of broadband?
Most important.. is this modem also working as router?
If it is adsl the TC seems to pick that up and immediately wants to take over as router.
Whichever broadband you have.. if the existing modem is also a router, stick to the TC working in bridge mode.
Do this manually. And do it by ethernet.
Steps as follows.
1. Reset the TC and plug a LAN port of the TC into ethernet port of the computer.
Open your Network preferences and you should see it exactly as below.. the TC at 10.0.1.1 and the ethernet on 10.0.1.2
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local.. this is crucial.. and not given enough emphasis in the instructions.. you cannot get the setup to work properly without it. Don't forget to change ipv6 to link-local for wireless as well.
2. Open the airport utility and go to File / Configure Other.
3. Type in the IP of the TC.. no password is needed until it is setup. Click OK
4. You are now in the Manual setup area. And finally YOU can setup the TC.. CORRECTLY.
5.
As per above.. if the modem is a router.. set the TC to bridge.
6. Go to the Internet tab and check it is set to dhcp.. it will be by default.
7. Go to the wireless tab and create a wireless network.
Give it a suitable name. Short .. no spaces and pure alphaunumeric.. is my recommendation.
8. Go to the Base Station tab and give the TC a suitable name.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric, I strongly recommend.
Click update and now plug the TC into the modem.. ethernet LAN port modem to WAN port of the TC.
All will now work.. because YOU are the BOSS!
