Set up web with an external dns server

hi i have bought a mac server. and i am new to configure them, I have hosted dns with a company called speednames and I have plans to host several domains there. but I would like to put them to point to the server because I want to install joomla on the domains. on one of the domains, I still want to have the mail to run on speednames. the rest of the domains mail part i would like to point to the server. do somebody have a guide to do that

Your DNS MX (mail exchange) record goes to Speednames, and your DNS translation(s) go to your own static IP address(es), and your static IP names are (at your external firewall) NAT'd and port-forwarded to your server.
The DNS MX entry is the identity of the host where your in-bound mail for the domain is sent, and the other DNS translations are where (all) other queries go.

External DNS server not replicating records to secondary after migration from 2003 to 2012

Hi
I have a query relating to 2012 Server and DNS.
Last week we de-commissioned our primary external DNS server (Windows 2003 Server) and moved the role over to a new Windows 2012 server.
Since this point replication to our secondary server (3rd party hosted) does not seem to occur and our DNS records seem to have expired on the secondary server as we cannot look these up via nslookup.
I cannot see any failures in the event log of the server; I have checked our external firewall logs and nothing is being blocked inbound/ outbound as far as I can see. And the server’s local firewall has been disabled.
The server is a standalone server in a workgroup with a standard filebased primary zone, with no AD integration and recursion disabled.
When I created the zone I copied the .dns file from the old server and selected this in the interface during the creation of the zone on the new server. The new server has the same internal and external IP as the old server and the old server is off-line.
I have also manually increased the serial number of the zone and still no joy.
One thing that I have noticed is when I open the zones properties/Name Servers and click edit on the external nameserver I get the infamous "The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone" error.
Any help Would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Nice to hear that you are close in finding the problem. So in short:
You have enabled Zone transfers in DNS management console for the applicable zone
You have verified that your DNS is listening to the correct interfaces
You have enabled firewall rules to accept TCP and UDP traffic to port 53
You have checked if "BIND secondaries" option is applicable to your case
You have initiated a zone transfer from the secondary server

Can´t communicate with the primary DNS Server 200.49.156.5: and now?

I have connected a Sony Vaio with a Linksys WRT54G router, using broadband cable provided by a Motorola Surfboard Modem (model 5b5100i)
I followed all the steps from the router´s CD.
Finally I connected a network cable to the port 1 of the router and on the other extreme the Motorola Modem is now connected. As result, since I have a desktop already connected to the modem, there are now 2 connections on the back of the motorola modem, 1 for a desktop that uses its USB plug and a 2nd, which uses a network cable (ethernet connection) and that plugs at the end to the Linksys router. connection is ok based on the Linksys CD.
The wireless card of 2 different laptops recognize the router´s signal, but no internet copnnection is available.
after diagnostic on network problems by Vista Windows, I receive the following message
¨"Cannot communicate with the primary DNS Server 200.49.156.5"
What does it mean? what needs to be set in order to make it work?

I talked to a tech support form my cable company and the motorola only provides 1 IP address, therefore, in order to make a router work (it will need its own IP address, a 2nd one), you need to buy an ADDITIONAL internet connection or access point....this company is in Argentina. While I lived in the US (last month) they allowed me to have multiple computers from the same one connection.
bottom line, calll your ISP and tell them you need either to install the router on your connection OR to have an additional internet cable input....
just my 2 cents...business rules.

Just as what ManU Philip said, you need to create
Autodiscovery.domaincom and mail.domain.com for external dns server.
Generally, you configure your Exchange Servers as DNS clients of your internal DNS server.

Setting up a mail server IMAP + SMTP with an external DNS

I'm not sure if i will be 100% clear in this message because i've got a slight pain in the head because i've been trying to get a mail server running in Tiger Server the entire evening.
So here's my problem: The server i'm administrating needs to gain a mail server. For the first time in my life i have to set one up and i'm not to happy about it. I've tried to follow everything in the manual but it isn't working at all.
This is my server situation: Domain registered by a friend points to DNS server of my ISP which creates all the Entries which all point to my server in the datacenter. On that server i need to get an IMAP + SMTP server running.
I've tried everything and I even got the IMAP part working at one time (people could send emails to a temp. account on the server) but after altering the setting so i could send email everything went wrong. No receiving or sending.
Please help me out!

How to install external DNS Server on Windows server 2008?

After 2 days hard working I'm confused about DNS servers.
i registered a domain name and want to host my own DNS for my website.
i install DNS Role and IIS on a windows server 2008 R2 and config them all and set 127.0.0.1 and 8.8.8.8 on my network interface on my serve .
on my server i have 2 website
dns1.mysite.com //to set it on my domain panel as name server
mysite.com //hosting
now everything work on my server , when i type mysite.com at my web browser i can see my site.and when i ping mysite.com it reply my server static ip.
but on internet it does not work. i mean if you type dns1.mysite.com or mysite.com not works and i got request time out when i ping theme.
at this state if you set my server IP as DNS server at your network adapter(interface) everything work great.
how can i have a DNS Server like that hosting using on our domains like dns1.godaddy.com ?
i should register my DNS on any where like a organization or website or...?

For the local nic you should _always_ configure dns servers that have the same scope. I think 8.8.8.8 and 127.0.0.1 will never have the same scope. Note that the configuration of multiple dns servers is only there for failover purposes. If the first one
is working, the second one is never used.
You should create a zone on your dns server matching your domain, and you should request your registrar to make your server authorative over your zone. Some providers let you configure this yourself (on a weninterface), so please consult the documentation
provided by the service provider/registrar. If in doubt, they will be the primary contact point as the required configuration depends on theirs.
Note that when you want to host a public dns server, the server should be reachable from the internet on port 53 tcp/udp and you should follow guidelines for serrver security very strictly.
Also be aware updates on dns servers need some time to be applied worldwide due to caching that has to expire and zone transfers that might be needed. be patient.

Layer 3 Web redirect without MD DNS Server

Actually, I want to configure layer 3 web redirect and i dont have any DNS server. I tried to use the core switch to resolve the name into ip through the comment ip host webauth 1.1.1.1 but it did not work, I am using the DHCP currently local on the controller any suggestions?

Can you elaborate on what you are trying to do?
Unless you've specified a DNS name on your Virtual Interface, webauth with redirect the client to the IP address of your Virtual Interface. Generally speaking you only put a DNS name on the Interface if you are using a certificate... For you to have a valid certificate, I would suspect it has a valid domain, and therefor you should be able to make a DNS entry global for that domain pointing webauth.domain.com back to 1.1.1.1......
But if all you're trying to accomplish is webauth without a dns lookup resolving 1.1.1.1, then this should already be in place if you haven't put a name on the Virtual Interface.

Strange issues with domain controller/DNS server

Our domain controller/DNS server was working fine this morning. Then suddenly we stopped being able to access certain things on it. I could ping it, RDP into it, and access some files on it, but I couldn't run any applications hosted on it, accessing shared
network files was slow, and different people around the office were getting access denied errors to files and folders they had full control of in NTFS (and in shared permissions).
At first I noticed an NTP error so I registered w32tm and started the service and that got rid of the error but didn't fix anything.
Oddly, machines still had internet access.
We tried rebooting everything, restarting services, nothing has helped.
When I accessed the server directly through the console I could access everything, could connect to any machine in the office, nothing seemed to be wrong with it.
Any ideas?

Is there any recent changes in your network or firewall or antivirus? Is there any change/updates performed in the AD side? I would suggest find out changes being done at the AD or Network/FIrewall level. You can run various diagnostic test within your AD
environment to find the overall health of the AD infra.

ViewKind Parameter Ignored in ProjectItem.Open if ProjectItem is Set to Open With Default External Editor

In my VS2010 extension, I have just encountered a situation which I can find no workaround for. As always, I went to Carlos Quintero's MZ-Tools first to see if I could find an answer. In this excellent article of his (http://www.mztools.com/articles/2007/mz2007027.aspx),
he discusses how to get "the ProjectItem in the desired view using ProjectItem.Open(viewKind), which returns an EnvDTE.Window object."
This is the behavior I have experienced until I noticed that if a user selects "Open With..." and sets a default external program to open a given item with, I can no longer programmatically open the item in the text editor (this is required
functionality for my extension, since I am not setting the Window to visible, anyway). The screenshot below illustrates my point, even though I am working with my own custom extensions.
In this case, calling ProjectItem.Open with every available ViewKind value will cause Program.cs to open in Notepad rather than the text editor. The Window returned from the Open call is always null in this case.
Is there any way I can force an item to open in the text editor, regardless what its default program/viewer is? Thanks for your help,

I don't think that is a bug but a limitation of the automation model.
As workaround, you can use the following method:
IVsUIShellOpenDocument.OpenSpecificEditor
If you want something somewhat more palatable you can use the following method:
VsShellUtilities.OpenDocumentWithSpecificEditor
Editor guids are stored in the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0_Config\Editors, but since you are only interested in the text editor guid, you are lucky because there is already a constant defined Microsoft.VisualStudio.VSConstants.GUID_TextEditorFactory.
There is also a constant defined for the logical view: Microsoft.VisualStudio.VSConstants.LOGVIEWID.TextView_guid.
So, even if text files are set to open with Notepad, this code should open them in the text editor:

How to setup NTP service in server 2012 R2 to synch with an external NTP server

I have looked at the blogs on setup and could not make sense of them. I did this easily on SBS2008 before I migrated to 2012 R2.
What is the process to establish the DC server 2012 R2 as the time source. Right now it is BIOS clock and I wish to move to NTP as the time source.

TS1258 Is there a way to re-set the monitor with an external keyboard, since my internal keyboard is not working?

My internal keyboard and mouse have stopped working, so I have attached an external keyboard and mouse. But now I need to re-set the monitor. Can I do it with an external keyboard?
I have the dark bands at the bottom of the internal display.

You cant switch off the power to the monitor but you can send it to sleep.
1 - Apple > System preferences > energy saver: set the monitor to sleep at the shortest duration
2 - While the second display is connected and powered on, System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement: deselect the Mirror Displays option
While the presentation plays on the secondary display, the Mac display will go to sleep as there is nothing on the screen during play, entering display sleep within seconds.

How to set up iTunes with an external hard drive so that there is not a double location for the iTunes Media folder

A very helpful postee got to the end of his knowledge level, so I am posting this for you tech guys to sort out. Bit long because I've tried to set it out step by step. Briefly I'm new to iTunes and my laptop has a very small hard drive and is virtually full and due to be replaced. So I want to use an external hard drive.
Now I know that iTunes installs itself to two locations: 1. Programs Files 2. Music. And its the Music location that bothers me.
I asked about using an external hard disk to store the actual AAC files. I was advised that in order to change the loaction of the iTunes media folder I was should employ preferences/advanced/ and this is what i saw (as you would expect):
Then I hooked up my hard drive, hit 'change', and this is what I saw:
I was a bit worried by the lack of pathway details, but assumed it must have done something on the external drive, so I looked on it and this is what i saw (highlighted):
But compare this with what was in the directory I attempted to reproduce, viz in the iTunes folder in /laptop/Music/iTunes:
A ton of stuff. The only stuff that corresponded with what iTunes had created on my external hard drive was in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder:
Now this suggests that there are TWO locations for my preferences. The advanced tab only allowed me to ADD an extra location, not REPLACE the original.
So:
1. Which of the two locations will iTunes choose when I add music? Surely it will go with the original pathway laid down in the directory when iTunes was installed, and ignore my external Hard Drive? I mean, how can there be two automatic locations?!!!
2.. I don't mind itunes library being on my laptop as this is just a list, but it obvoiusly has to have a pathway to the site where the actual AAC files are stored.
so surely it won't work unless the whole lot is on the external hard drive: library, extras, genius, the lot?
4. How then do I get it all on the external since merely changing "preferences" doesn't do the job?
5. Is this perhaps the reason why so many people report that iTunes does not recognize their external hard disk:

Easy method 1:
Move or Copy entire working library from current location to the root of your external drive. Press & hold down shift (option on a Mac) as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Choose when prompted, then browse to ..\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl on the external. If you copied the library across then test your new library works properly after renaming the original folder, before deleting the original folder to recover space.
Easy method 2:
If you haven't really started to build your library. Press & hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Create. Browse to the root of the external drive. Create the library as ITunes. Drag your media into ..\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes.
Complex method:
Required if you've already tried other things and now have media & library scattered around. See the post make a split library portable.
in addition...
In all cases the idea is to get a library folder called iTunes containing a media folder called iTunes Media with all media inside this media folder. Once you have the library in this shape it is easy to reconnect to the library with the shift-start-iTunes method if the drive letter changes, move the library to another computer, and backup the library by cloning the folder to another drive.

NAP with DHCP with an external NPS server

Hi ,
I have setup NAP with DHCP setup in my lab setup and it is working . On my setup both the DHCP server and NPS are running on the same Longhorn server .
What I would like to understand better is the communication between the DHCP server and the radius server ( i.e NPS ) .I would therefore like to run these two components on two separate boxes and capture sniffer traces as the two are communicating.
My question is what do I need to configure to have the DHCP server and NPS to talk to each other since I will run them on two separate machines. Is there a write up that explains the interaction between the two .

I have configured NPS2 to proxy Machine Identity "Machine health check" to NPS1. NPS2 is generating RADIUS Access-Requests when a client is attempting to obtain a DHCP address (as configured in the step by step doc) The RADIUS Access-Reject message is being returned, here is the output. There is no user account in the originating request from NPS2, nor is the user account info present in the DHCP request by the NAP enabled client so I'm not sure how this should work.

How to configure DNS server to redirect all web traffic to one external website?

I'd like to use the DNS service on my OS X Server as a way to force all all web traffic to one specific, external website. Not quite sure how to go about configuring it, though - any recommendations?
(BTW, this is, obviously, not our primary DNS server; I intend to silently update the preferred DNS server for users who fail to complete their timesheets in order to force the issue)

Web clients don't generate uniquely-identifiable DNS queries; there's no SRV request or related traffic that you could select on and spoof. So if you do implement this, everything querying the spoofing DNS server will get the spoofed host, or you'll have to spot specific queries that are likely web queries; Facebook, Google, Bing, etc.
If you still want to implement this, then I'd probably replace the DNS server with a runt DNS server (maybe hack dnsmasq or maraDNS, or create yourself a trivial DNS server) and have that always return the specified IP address. This avoids having to hack BIND to be universally authoritative, which is probably on par with hacking a simpler DNS server to always return a fixed IP address, and the latter is probably easier to undo.
A firewall can spot TCP port 80 and port 443 traffic, unlike a DNS server. Firewalling outbound port 80 traffic is more typical of these requests, and either trap that traffic to a specific web page based on the capabilities of the firewall, or the web proxy approach that Camelot suggests. There are folks that tie access into the web proxies into external authentication and related; that'd be able to do what you want. Web proxies are usually combined with firewall blocks, as most sites want only the web proxy to have external access, too. But this is also rather more pieces than a DNS redirect, too.

External DNS name with Transversal Firewall

It is possible to have more that one external DNS name. Please see:
Array Manager - Array - <server> - General - Properties
In here you can map ip-addresses (of clients) to dns names.
However, a user will not be able to dynamically choose which server to
access - the
server will be selected on the first matching IP pattern.

Have have one server RedHat 4.0 with SGD 4.1 with this names in diferrent
IP:
server1.company.com (peer dns name)-> IP1
server2.company.com (Bind in another IP2 with external dns name and
firewall forewarding in port 443, the customca is server2.company.com)

Can I configure SGD 4.1 to respond with two external dns name with
firewall forewarding ?

The client user can works with two names ?
Client prefer to choose access with server1 or server2.
