Setting a default application

Hello, every time I double-click on a .doc file it automatically opens in Word 2008 instead of Word 2004.
- I have selected a .doc file and hit "get info" then selected "Open this with..." and chose Word 2004. Then I hit the button under it that says "Change All".
If I go back and check the file (and others) it shows it is back to Word 2008 again. Apparently this feature is worthless as I have the same problem with other programs such as Photoshop CS3 & CS4.
Does anyone know of a method that is more reliable? Thanks. -Derryl

Reset the LaunchServices database, running this one-line command in the Terminal.app, restart, and try resetting .doc files to open with Word 2004:

How to set my default application...not working

My company has nearly all adobe applications installed from PageMaker 6.5 through InDesign 5.5. We use them all frequently. I'm trying to set my defaults on the Mac Pros and it is not working.
Specs if Needed:
OSX 10.6.8
Model Identifier:          MacPro5,1
Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors:          1
Total Number Of Cores:          4
Memory:          6 GB
Boot ROM Version:          MP51.007F.B01
+BootCamp dual boot Windows 7
We proof out all files in the version that it comes to us. Our customers are on different versions than the most current, and it's driving us crazy that we can't set the defaults for
each Adobe application. For Instance,
We want for Defaults:
Photoshop = CS4
InDesign = CS4
Illustrator = CS5
etc.
The Finder will not allow us to make the change to open all of a certain file type in the version we want by default. We also use a third party application that allows us to "double
click" InDesign files and open them in the correct version. This saves valuable navigation time and because of the OS's problem with using the correct icons, it also saves us time
dealing with the "Untitled" document when we accidentally convert by opening in the wrong application by mistake. We have gone through Onyx utilities and massive permissions
troubleshooting to no avail. Does anyone know how to set the default for ALL files of a type for Adobe Apps? This has been thoroughly tested and is not working on 10 plus
machines, and only effects Adobe apps.
Any Ideas?

I think you miss understand the question. There is a problem with OSX 10.6 and Adobe Apps. 10.5 ok, not sure about 10.7 because of all of the other Adobe problems we downgraded the test machine that we used for the upgrade. There is no way that I have found to make the files “Double-Clickable” through assigning a default application of files with Adobe extensions. We already have an app. that we use and it worked fine until 10.6. I can’t just approve a division-wide purchase of software for a bug that may be solvable by other means (by the way supposed cost of the licensing Soxy is deceiving at $20. Not for us. For companies it’s $20 per platform & also for each time Adobe updates. When we swap out hardware, we have to pay $40 again . Their pricing is absurd). $40 x a couple hundred machines every 18 months or so, uugh! The ten or so I’m working with are just the ones in my immediate department.
I know you have good intentions with your reply and I appreciate it, however I’m looking to solve the problem, not put a band-aid on it. If the problem is by design so Rorohiko can hold companies hostage, then I guess we’ll just have to deal with the few extra clicks it takes to figure out which version we’re in need of, and dragging to the launch bar.

Adobe Reader will not set as default application for .pdf in windows 8.1 pro x64

When I install adobe reader the icon/app changes from windows reader to Pick an app, I choose change and select adobe reader, the icons on my desktop flicker but nothing actually changes.Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, Select adobe reader, Choose defaults for this program, PDF is unticked so I tick it and choose save, go back in and it is unticked again??? Right click on a pdf file, choose open with, choose default program, use this app for all .pdf files is ticked, select adobe...Still nothing changes, stays on pick an app. I uninstall adobe reader then the pdf icon changes to and default opens with windows reader again. Reinstall adobe reader and back to the same thing. ???? I am a power user, build configure computers and subsequent software, started with DOS 6.0, learned unix/linux/networking concepts/networking security/server versions of windows/active directory. The only solution I could think of was to hack the registry which I looked for but could not find. I am running 8.1 pro x64, I just discovered that windows reader (which I cant uninstall) has the same problem when adobe reader is installed. Windows will not allow either one to be set as default while they co-exist.

After an extended session with chat only to be told that since Adobe Reader was free they could not help me :-(... I figured it out myself.
I opened a administrator: command prompt window and typed "regedit" Through extensive searching and stumbled on this key located at... HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids The S-1-5-21...1001... is my current logged on user, your value may differ slightly. Typically the builtin disabled administrator account is 1000 and when you install windows and create a user account "John Doe" it will have administrator priveleges and be auto numbered 1001, every user account created therafter will increase by 1 ie...1002, 1003, 1004 etc. even if you remove (delete) an account and re-create it you wont get the same number, the system will use the next number in sequence. The old one will have been trashed never to be used again. Again here is the key...
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids I deleted this key under (default) on the right side...

Personally I selected computer on the left side and the went to file/export then chose a file name [01 29 2014 regbackup.reg] and location. Then I selected "OpenWithProgids" and did the same thing,[pdf.reg] this saves a backup of the entire regestry and the key you are about to delete as a safety net. When you are done all you have to do is go to a pdf file, right click and choose open with...Adobe Reader - the box always use this app should already be checked.
I did this and it works yet because improper regestry modification can crash your system I am compelled to warn... Use at your own risk. If you are uncomfortable modifying your registry I would suggest consulting with someone qualified and has resources to do offline registry modifications/restorations which makes it VERY important to do the computer export registry backup.

How to set my default application for illustrator files (windows)

I have both illustrator CS3 and CS5 on my windows 7 machine. I want to keep both versions as CS3 is better for converting SVG files.
Windows has CS3 as the default application when opeing .svg files. but I want to change this to CS5. I have tried changing the default program in the normal way,
right click - open with - choose default program...
only CS3 is listed in the programs, so I navigate to CS5
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5.1\Support Files\Contents\Windows\illustrator.exe
but when I click ok, CS5 isn't added to the program list.
I have managed to change the default program for .ai and .eps files in this way and its workeds, but not with.svg files.
Any ideas?

Setting up default application?

Hello, is there a way to make certain filetypes open with a different application on default? For example, say I have a bunch of video clips that are in .mov (which opens in quicktime on default). Is there a way to set it up so that any .mov would open with another application like VLC?

Select any .mov, and Get Info. Turn down the Open With arrow, and select the application you wish from the drop down menu. Check the "Apply to all" box. Bingo!

Hi there,
Does anyone know how to set one application to be the default (when opening files) over another application?
For example: I have both Acrobat 7 and Acrobat 8 installed on my machine. When I installed Acrobat 8, it automatically made itself the default program for all things related to PDFs. This is annoying as I much prefer to open my PDFs in Acrobat 7.
My work around is to control/click/open with - 7, but sometimes I forget. What I want is to set Acrobat 7 as the default rather than Acrobat 8.
I need both programs, so I don't want to simply un-install 8.
Any ideas?

how can we possibly set an application to run when a specified filetype are opened..
for example: when we open a txt file(Doubleclick), notepad will automatically be launched to view the text file..
what i want to do is set my own notepad-like app to be launched when a text file is double clicked
can any 1 help??

On Windows (because you realise this is a Windows question, not a Java one ...;) find a .txt file and right click on it. Follow the arrow from "Open With..." and click on "Choose Program".
You can get more options and things by going to "My COmputer" and selecting "Tools" -> "Folder Options" and going to the "File Types" tab. Locate .txt files (they are alphabetical by extension) and you will find there are a couple of buttons. The "Change" button takes you to the "Open with" dialog mentioned above. But there is an "Advanced" button - and that looks just the thing to break your Windows, so you click on that.
From there you can add, remove and edit the various things that appear when you right click on an icon (open, print etc) and select which is the default action when the user double clicks. Have a look at the commands that already exist to get an idea what command you would use to invoke your program as a plain text editor.

Setting a default application after loggin in

Hai all,
whenever I login, a default standard application is coming (cfx_rfc_ui). but i need my custom application should appear first through the custom application it will navigate to cfx_rfc_ui. How to make my custom appln (zappln) to appear first ? Any settings needs to be maintained?

(solved}set a default application

Hi... i have arch with openbox as my wm..... I have just installed dropbox from aur, but when I click the icon in the system tray, it opens spacefm, but I want it to open pcmanfm...... how would I do this??
I am guessing I need to "export" pcmanfm somewhere... just don't know how or where to.

Setting default application

when I'm trying to open up a document or something it says something like "There is no default application specified to open the document (name of document)" . How do you set a default application and what should I set it to?
I have an iMac version 10.4.8

Tell me some of the names of these programs. What are the 3 letter suffixes (after the .)?
Examples: .sit opens with Stuffit Expander, .xls = Excel, .mov = Quicktime Player etc.
Most games run by themselves after you've installed them
Are these Mac games you've downloaded? Files ending .exe are Windows programs & require Windows XP SP2 to be installed through Bootcamp.

Set "default application language" in 11i

i want to know if there is a way to set the default application language for some users from the table level.
i know i can set it up from the preferences. but my requirement is to do a mass update of 5000 users.
the only thing i updated was the wf_local_roles table but that did not do anything.
i think i am missing some more tables.
any help would be appreciated.

[SOLVED] Unable to set default application to open files

Hello,
Whenever I try to set a default application for a file type (an avi for example) by right-clicking the file in Nautilus and choosing Open with Other Application, I can select the application (in this case VLC), check the Remember this Application checkbox and click Open, I always get the below message:
Could not set application as the default: Can't create user application configuration folder /root/.local/share/applications: Permission denied
I'm not logged in as root (confirmed with "whoami") so I'm not sure why it's trying to access the root home folder.
I'm thinking this is simply a misconfigured path statement (forgive the Windows terminology) but I'm not sure where to start looking. Any help would be most appreciated.

The situation has already changed a bit. Still being in Windows mode, I decided to try a reboot. After rebooting I no longer get the error I was before (I wonder if it had something to do with logging in initially as root then su'ing to my user account) but the association with vlc just isn't sticking.
I noticed though that now when I right-click on a video file I get the option to "Open with Movie Player" as well as "Open with VLC media player" (which does do what it's supposed to), which wasn't there before. For grins I went and set the preferred multimedia app to VLC through System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, but that didn't help.
Is there a place these preferences are stored that I might take a peek at?

Click the file, click File>Get Info, then under "Open With", select the app you want .doc files to open with, and click "Change All".

Change default applications in Nokia 5530 XM

I have a question about setting the default applications under Menu -> Settings -> Phone -> Application sett. -> Default apps. As I understand this, I can change the default application here. But I can't. I want to change the default webbrowser from the built in thing to Opera Mobile and the default music player to PowerMP3 but can't figure out how to do this as I only have the standard items when I want to change them.

[how to] Thunar forgets preferred / default applications in Openbox

This was my situation:
I would set default image viewer to gpicview, default for movies and music was vlc, default for PDF's was evince. After reboot these settings would be forgotten and the system would use gimp for images, mplayer for movies and music and gimp(!?!) for PDF's
This was my fix:
edit ~/.bashrc and add this
#set desktop environment as XFCE so default apps can be managed
export DE=xfce
now in terminal follow these ideas...
1) to check the MIME of a file do this
xdg-mime query filetype ~/imagelocation/imagename.png
response is
image/png
2) tell it to use a certain program
xdg-mime default gpicview.desktop image/png
0) To get the name of the program:
navigate to /usr/share/applications and get properties on the relavant program. Check the "Launcher" tab and copy the command.

But I can not set my default application correctly.
What I did is as follow:

[Desktop:henry 10:39]$ xdg-mime default mousepad.desktop text/plain
[Desktop:henry 10:41]$ xdg-open ./doc.doc
method return sender=:1.10 -> dest=:1.9 reply_serial=2
but xdg-open still use "mousepad" (my default application for plain text) to open this office doc.
I don't know what did I do wrong here...?
