Setting a folder size??
Hi there,
This is my first time to install OCS; the doc says that the TMP env. variable has to refere to a directory with 300mb of free space; originally, how can I create or set a folder size on windows??
thanks alot.
If you have a disk thay offers a filesystem with 10 GB and you create a directory in this dilesystem than it could contain up to 10 GB (which includes your 300 MB).
So, in essence just create a directory in a filesystem (or disk in Windows) that is large enough to contain the 300 MB.

Share Point folder size limit - File Services
I created a new folder inside a share point using Server Admin. Is there a way to set a folder size limit (quota) for that folder.
P.S. I am NOT talking about user accounts quotas for home folders created using Workgroup Manager! ...Just any new folder created, to be used on any volume, is there a way to set a mamimum size?
For example I have a 1TB volume on my Xserve RAID. I create a new folder but want to set its maximum capacity to 200GB. Is that possible?
Thank you very much in advance for any feedback. There's no direct way to set a limit on a folder size.
The 'simplest' method I can think of is to create partitions on your disk of the appropriate sizes and share these - they will have inherent size limits based on the size of the partition. It's a little messier but should solve your issue.
:: thinking :: you might be able to use disk images rather than partitions, although I've never tried sharing a mounted disk image, and you'd need to address automounting the disk images when the server starts, so it might not be viable. -
How do I set the default size of a new folder?
I have finder sized the way I want for existing folders and if I do Finder > New Finder Window. These preferrences, however, do not seem to apply to new folders. Everytime I create a new folder on my desktop, and open that folder for the first time, the window size is really small and the sidebar is narrow. This is incredibally annoying. How do I set the default size for all new folders? Is there a plist file I can edit to fix this? Or an AppleScript I can run automatically in the background that fixes this? I am running Mavericks 10.9.1.
If you use the Finder's New Finder Window command (command N) to create a new window, resize it, place it where you want, and set it for icon view or however you want it. Then close it. Closing it is what sets these as the default. That should become the default for every new Finder window you create using the new window command. But if you have lots of windows open at once and then close them, the last window you close will set a new default.
There are lots of utilities that control Windows - their size and placement. I use one called Moom but there are many more. -
Sccm Client Cache folder size growing instead of limit set
Hi Everyone.
Greetings.
We have noticed that in our sccm environment, the cache folder size (under CCM path) in clients keeps increasing but however it should not as i believe the older contents automatically to be removed while downloading new contents.
The cache folder to download the contents as by default set to 5GB and we haven't modified anything on that.
Please suggest us on this as it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
ThangarajHi Jason,
Yes. However we are using software distribution as well.
We noticed recently this large size CCM folder (19GB) in one of our server as C drive is running out of space.
But when i looked at the contents inside that CCMCache folder, below are the findings.
The content size of all the advertisements are around 18GB.
The content size of software updates are around 1GB.
MS KB patches, Service packs are pushed through software advertisement(present inside folder named as package ID. So it cannot be considered as software updates deployment right?
Please suggest. Thanks.

Folder size is twice that of its contents????
Startup Disk > Users > Username
My Username folder shows a folder size that is just about double the size of all of its visible folders. I can see this when viewed in the Finder in List View with Folder Size Shown as my default View setting. Any idea how I can figure out what is going on?
thanks
BradTopher,
Before I saw your reply, I emptied my trash and that brought the folder size down to what it should be to match its contents. I should have remembered that. None the less, I did what you suggested once I read your message and here it is:

Hi, everyone.
When I use command-F to search in Finder, the Folder Size option doesn't seem to work at all. Whenever I type some number (ie, greater than 1 kb), nothing was found. Is this function broken? Nor does the Size of Application or the File pathname work also.
Thanks for any suggestions.Hi Tempura
I believe that both Mike and I haven't yet to experience a corrupt index. Certainly in one case, I initiated it myself.
Although there appears a number have, if you analyse the postings, you find that more than not, the issues are not related to corrupt indexes.
Many issues are simply not understanding Spotlight, setting the Preference pane improperly, not letting Spotlight do a proper and complete indexing, messing around with the System prefs, not running Disk Utility to repair permissions after installing, updating or revising applications and the OS, insufficient ram, trying to index CDs, DVDs, servers, etc.
Personally, I find Spotlight amazing fast and accurate except when I have forgotten that I had adjusted the Preferance pane. I have tested various third-party products, and have tossed them out. Not that I don't share their unique functionalities, I just haven't found it to be advantageous to have them on board. Note that if you do install any third-party app, check to see how it may affect Tiger and all its utilities. There are some that will reset the preferences including Spotlight's and its ability to index.
If you haven't as yet, Apple and The XLab (the book especially) have some great stuff on Spotlight that is well worth reading. I say this, because no doubt, Spotlight is not going away and the introduction of Leopard will advance it even further, e.g., as described (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/spotlight.html), and certainly in Time Machine.
Good luck

Can you search by file folder size?
I have 42 GB left on my hard drive and I've purged as much as I can but it still says I have used 148.93 GB of space, of which I cannot really account for in Documents, Music, Movies or Photos (they are all stored on external hard drives). My Applications folder appears to only take up 17 GB of space.
Is there a way of looking at which folders contain the most information? This article from PeachPit points me to third party software but I'm curious to see if anyone knows of a way just within the native Apple environment?
http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=761745
Many thanks!
NathanThe easiest way to do this is to set a folder to 'List View' Open View Options (command-J) select to show the size column and also select 'Calculate all sizes'.
Then click on the size column to sort by size and you will have the largest at the top/bottom... including folders. So you can see where the largest files are.
Hope that helps. -
It would be helpful when in folder view to be able to see the size of the folder - I fill folders until they are a DVD-worth and then archive and create a new folder (DAM approach). Currently I have to go to windows to see the size and then back to Bridge to decide what to do next.
A folder size indication when folder on Content panel + perhaps a right click to give properties etc. as per Windows. This is about as minimal as Finder lets it get -
As far as I can tell that arrangement is displayed only when viewing the Desktop.
Finder uses a slightly longer one for a window whose view is set to Icon -
...and the one I posted previously for windows whose view is set to List.
In Finder, there is actually only one View Options display and it is live; what is shown in it will change as you change the view mode for a window, and also will change to reflect the choices/settings if you click on a different window.
Perhaps Path Finder has altered how that behaves. However, try some experimenting. Open the View Options display, and then try navigating into a nest of folders. Try highlighting different things in the Path Finder displays - the name of a folder in a list, the name of a column display, etc. At some point you may be able to access the long form for the particular folder's window.
On the other hand, Path Finder seems to act by changing how Finder's info is displayed. In doing so, it may also be interfereing with Finder's ability to present applicable choices in the View Options screen (perhaps because Finder is not coded to understand Path Finder). If you determine that is indeed the case, suggest you send a 'bug' report back to the publisher, explaining the problem and asking them to fix it in a future release of Path Finder. -
How can I set the preferences to calculate the size of folders on the hard drive?
Hi Dave,
You can see the folder sizes in List View.
While in List View, under the View Menu, select "Show View Options",
then check the boxes for "Size" and "Calculate all sizes"
Note while in List view, you can then sort by size by clicking on the Size column header. You can also reverse the sort by clicking it again. This works with any column header.

Folder Size in Explorer, Windows 7
Dear Readers:
I would like to know if Windows 7 includes the option to view Folder Size in the Explorer window interface (an option similar to viewing [file] Size)? I have attempted to use various software to do this in Windows Vista such as Tree Size Professional but the help files say that Windows Vista does not allow viewing of Folder Sizes in Explorer.
Sincerely,

Hi ,
We have set up WSUS Server 3.2 on Windows server 2008 R2 and set the Disk size as 80 GB. The WSUSContents folder is taking away all the disk space and as a result WSUS Server stopped working.
Details:
1. There are no other languages selected other than English.
2.There are no Downstream servers configured.
3.Server cleanup wizard runs for 10 seconds and it shows the below report .
4. Is there any script available to purge the WSUS database?
India1947The WSUSContents folder is taking away all the disk space and as a result WSUS Server stopped working.
You need to perform additional administration on the server other than just running the Server Cleanup Wizard. Running the wizard with no other administration will accomplish nothing of significance.
Removing unneeded update approvals
Of course, running out of room on the disk drive may well have corrupted the database, at which point the only reliable means of recovery is to install a NEW instance of WSUS with a fresh database.

Hello every one! I have this script:
$log = ".\logfile.log"
$startFolder = "C:\VMs"
$colItems = Get-ChildItem $startFolder | Where-Object {$_.PSIsContainer -eq $True} | Sort-Object
foreach ($i in $colItems){
$itemSum = Get-ChildItem ("$startFolder\" + $i.Name) -recurse | Measure-Object -property length -sum
"$startFolder\$i -- " + "{0:N2}" -f ($itemSum.sum / 1KB) + " KB" >> $log
import-csv $log -delimiter "`t" | export-csv .\TEST.csv
$body = Get-Content $log | Sort | Out-String
Send-MailMessage -From [email protected] -To [email protected] -Subject "Test Theme" -attachment .\TEST.csv -Encoding ([System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8) -Body $body -SmtpServer test123.test.local
Remove-Item $log
Remove-Item .\TEST.csv
When this script done I
receive something like this in email message:
C:\VMs\Backup -- 0,00 KB
C:\VMs\Vbox -- 82 874 750,42 KB
C:\VMs\VMWARE_BACKUP -- 182 818,77 KB
How I can change this script to sort by folder size?
Not alphabetically.
Thanks in advance!Hello Darkwind,
you can do this, but it'll require some reformatting your script. I've done the honors:
$startFolder = "C:\VMs"
# Get folders
$colItems = Get-ChildItem $startFolder | Where-Object {$_.PSIsContainer -eq $True} | Sort-Object
# This one will do the measuring for us
$fso = New-Object -ComObject Scripting.FileSystemObject
# iterate over each folder and measure length
$FolderReport = @()
foreach ($i in $colItems)
# 1: Get Size
$folder = $fso.GetFolder($i.FullName)
$size = $folder.size
# 2: Set Properties in a hashtable
$props = @{
name = $i.FullName
size = $size
displaysize = (("{0:N2}" -f ($size / 1KB)) + " KB")
# 3: Add to results
$FolderReport += New-Object PSObject -Property $props
# Sort results
$FolderReport = $FolderReport | Sort size
# Build CSV attachment
$FolderReport | export-csv .\TEST.csv
# Build body
$lines = @()
$FolderReport | %{$lines += ($_.name + " -- " + $_.displaysize)}
$body = $lines -join "`n"
# Send mail
Send-MailMessage -From [email protected] -To [email protected] -Subject "Test Theme" -attachment .\TEST.csv -Encoding ([System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8) -Body $body -SmtpServer test123.test.local
# Cleanup file
Remove-Item .\TEST.csv
As you can see, some slight modifications :)
Now, just what did I change ...
I used the Scripting.FileSystemObject Comobject to measure size, since that's a bit faster.
When selecting the size, I built custom objects containing the information (Name & size), since if we want to sort by size, we need to keep it as a separate property.
Then I sorted by size, and exported the result into a csv file for attachment
I built the body from strings in memory - no point writing it to a file, just to reread it. (that "`n" should work as a linebreak)
Cheers,
Fred

But this script first shows the

size. Is it possible to do the opposite? -
I am trying to get the size of a folder I used:
Set Archive to "Martha:EyeTV Archive"
Set ASize to size of (info for Archive)
I get and error on "info for Archive" saying it can find the file. This is a folder not a file. Do I have to use a shell script:
Set ASize to word 1 of (do shell script "/usr/bin/du -ks" & quoted form of (POSIX path of (Archive as string)))By the way, since the Standard Additions scripting dictionary describes the “info for” command as deprecated, maybe you'd better use the following code:
set Archive to POSIX file "/Volumes/Martha/EyeTV Archive" as alias
tell application "System Events" to set ASize to size of Archive
You could also ask for the “physical size” property of the Archive folder.
