Setting AE with Ethernet cable

Sorry for my English.
After a week of pain, I've just downgraded from a n network (Time Capsule + AXn) to my old, reliable AEg + AXg network.
The problem is that now the Airport Utility 5.3.2 let me configure the devices by ethernet cable only.
Well, I successfully configured the AE base station via etherneth cable. But for some reason I'm not able to do the same with AE. When I connect the AE to my iMac, the Network preference panel says that the cable is not connected.Of course the cable works well, beacause I used it with the AP base station. I also bought a new one in case something was wrong. No success.
I created an ad hoc Ethernet position, but it asks me data for an Internet connection. How can I set up the Ethernet connection just to see my AE?

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Open Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

AE Works with Ethernet Cable, but not Wirelessly. Please Help!!

I purchased the AE to run music streams via Airtunes from my wireless router/PC upstairs to my stereo downstairs. When I hook everything up upstairs with the ethernet cable, everything works like a charm, but the moment I remove the ethernet cable, the AE is not being picked up by the network. I set everything up for the wireless network (while the ethernet cable was hooked up) and have a green light on the AE, but when I try to use it wirelessly, it is blinking amber and not appearing within AirPort Utlity (only when hooked up with ethernet). I have a Westell 327W Wireless Modem/Router and could use some advice as to what I am doing wrong to get some tunes downstairs.

I was chasing this very topic for a long while, then took a break.
You are suppose to be able to stream music from your PC to external stereo speakers via iTunes, thru an Airport Express (AE) wirelees connection.
Here's my status:
It is pretty easy to get a wireless connection up & running so that you can play music from your laptop/pc to external wirelss speakers via iTunes, thru AE.
I have that up & running. The problem comes in when trying to add the Airport Express to an already existing Linksys router's wireless network. When setting
the AE up, you'll most likely get 4 error messages that have to be addressed before you go from from a flashing amber LED to a solid green LED. If you are just using Apple's ad-hoc wireless conncetion, you'll need to use Airport Utility to address the 4 issues. Basically, Airport Utility doesn't know how to address AE, since it doesn't have any IP address to a network. The other 3 are simlar problems. If you just tell Aiport Utility to ignore each of these problems, you will get the solid green LED on AE, and you'll be able to stream music directly from your PC to your speakers, wirelessly, once you finish the AE configuartion, and Airport Utility reconfigures the AE.
I have my HP laptop and printer setup with a Linksys 54G Router and Printserver,
so that the laptop and printer communicate wirelssly via the Linksys Router.
Now comes the fun...trying to add the AE to this already existing wireless network. I could get the AE to work when I had an Ethernet cable connected directly from a port on the router to the AE, but when I disconnected the Ethernet cable, the router no longer saw the AE in the network. I followed all of the instructions in the Airport Utility software, went seeking advice on this
newsgroup, the web, etc. Found lots of good information, but a lot of it was outdated.
I have my Linksys wirless network setup with WEP-64 encryption.
From what I have gathered, it is much easeir to add the AE to a WPA/WPA2 network, than to a WEP64/128 network, just because of newer protocols.
The problem that I have is that WPA encryption works much slower for me than
WEP encryption. Example: iTunes is roughly 60 MB is size. Downloading it
using WPA, results is a download time of 22-23 minutes; where a download
using WEP-64 takes 75-80 seconds !
In the past, what I was trying to do was add the AE to my already existing
wireless network. Now, I have a wireless network for the AE. I want to try to add this network to my already existing wireless netowrk for the Linksys router.
I just haven't taken the time to try it yet. From what Apple tells me, Linksys makes this setup messy. The fact that the AE works by itself proves that the
device is OK.

NB100 - Can't connect with ethernet cable

My netbook works fine with the wireless connection (although I only get 4Mb when I have 10Mb connection). I visited a friends house the other day and she doesn't have a wireless router.
I plugged the broadand cable into my machine. I disabled the wireless connection and enabled the LAN connection in network connections. I then switched off the wireless feature on the keyboard using the Fn & F1 keys.
It shows that there is a connection in my task bar but when I try to open the internet it won't connect.
I thought it was her connection as she had been having problems so today I went to another friends house and got exactly the same response.
I decided to try the same thing at home and I unplugged the ethernet cable from my wireless router and carried out the steps mentioned above.
Still no joy - am I missing something?

Are you saying that you can connect to LAN but not the internet, can you see other computers connected to the router? If you run 'CMD' and type 'ipconfig /all' do you get the network information or blank lines?
I'd recommend setting up static IP's too, and set the routers IP address as your default gateway. Also be sure to use an IP address within the routers range, and use the same Subnet Mask as the router.
Also have a look at the LAN setting in internet explorer to see if any of the boxes are ticked. I seem to recall when I first got broadband a few years ago I had issues connecting because the 'Automatically detect setting' box was ticked - I might be wrong, but I'm sure it caused me problems.

Migrate with ethernet cable?

i'm told that i can do the migration of data from another computer to the macbook air using the ethernet cable but i'm not clear how to do this. i assume this would be dramatically faster than doing it wirelessly, right? can anyone help?

I had a similar but slightly different experience using the Time Machine backup from my MacBook to a USB HD that was then connected to the MBA for use with Migration Assistant. Migration Assistant did not operate smoothly as I've experienced in the past, but it seemed to work. On reboot of the MBA, the blue screen of death appeared and remained for a very long time. I was certain that the machine was hosed. The next morning I simply turned it on and let it sit for over an hour with the blue screen being the only sign of life. Finally, the log-on window appeared, but after logging on, the Airport icon in the menu part kept telling me that I was not connected to a wireless network even though I was. So I took the MBA to my local Apple Store.
The Apple Store tech worked on the machine for about an hour and then decided that we needed to reformat the HD from an external CD drive with the original Leopard installation disks. It ran for 45 minutes but never finished "calculating sizes". At that point, the technician declared the MBA "dead" and set up a case number for a swap for a new machine. They would have done it in the store, but I ordered the 1.8 Ghz CPU version, and that's considered a custom configuration that stores don't stock. So I'm awaiting Apple Customer Service to call me with instructions to return my MBA that I've had since 4 Feb but never gotten to test very much. I like the form factor and the strength of the unit very much but I'm a little concerned over this wireless world working as promoted. Apple needs to change their current recommendations for Migration Assistant going to the MBA by telling everyone to try the Time Machine backup to HD first as I'm guessing that attempts at the wireless and wired connections with some inadvertent dropped bits set my MBA up for the scrap heap early.

Wi-fi only works with Ethernet cable

I'm using a MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, with Lion. My wi-fi works fine at home and several other wi-fi spots, but at work it seems that it can only access the internet with an Ethernet cable plugged in. Immediately after I unplug the ethernet cord, the wi-fi bars turn grey with a exclamation mark on top of it, displaying that there's no internet connection. I'm pretty sure it has something do to with IP address recognition or something like that, I just can't fix it!
The wi-fi at work works perfectly for everybody else, both mac and PC users. Help?

check which wifi router they are using. I had a linksys with that issue, and the firmware was old. It would connect, but no internet.

try setting up your tcp/ip with manually adding a ip address, similar to an address that works on other devices.
if u check you automatic dhcp ip and it starts with 169 then u know that its Class B (APIPA) address. This range is use in Zero Configuration Network and wont have internet. try to fix it manually.

Can 2 Macs connect with ethernet cable to share DVD for remote install?

Can I simply connect a Mac Mini Server and MacBook together with an ethernet cable?
I want to reinstall Mac OS X Server on the DVDless Mac Mini. There is no separate AirPort device.
So do I just connect the two machines with an ethernet cable, start the remote install program on the MacBook, then restart the Mac Mini with the Option key pressed?

According to page 57 of the Getting Started 10.6 server manual, you can use a Mac with a DVD drive operating in target disk mode for this. I see no mention of using Ethernet so I assume it is not supported. Even if it was, it would be extremely slow compared to using FireWire target disk mode.

Can't log in with ethernet cable plugged in

I have a whole department that has the same basic image and exact same workstations as other departments but solely has issues logging into their computers after a restart or shutdown. To log back in, they need to unplug their ethernet cables. Otherwise,
it never gets passed the welcome screen. After looking through the event logs, I see that when they are trying to log in with the cable plugged in they get an error stating:
Error 4/23/2014 10:31:52 AM Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy 1055 None "The processing
of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following:
a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller.
b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller)."
It seems that they are getting in with cached credentials and I've looked up the error and tried to see if there are DNS issues with the workstations being able to contact the DC and I can't quite figure out why this is happening. Does anyone have any suggestions
as to why this is happening? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I have been thinking about rejoining the machine to the domain but it is difficult to log in to the machine as an admin or any other acct that isn't the common user of the machine so I haven't tried it. All of the machines in that department aren't connected
on the same switch. The dept does not have a separate DC and it is not an RODC, it's a global catalog DC. I haven't run rsop.msc but have run a GPresult and I don't see any errors.

Using Time Capsule as an external hard drive with ethernet cable, disabling airport, using wifi from laptop

Okay, first of all, I admit right off the bat that I should have bought an external hard drive. Now I am stuck with a 3TB Time Capsule that I want to tie to my laptop via ethernet cable, without having the Time Capsule disable my laptop's current wifi. So, I want to be able to back up my laptop (using the ethernet cable and Time Machine) to my Time Capsule drive and still be able to be surfing the internet as if I didn't have Time Capsule at all.
My MacBook Pro is OS 10.7.5.
Any thoughts are much appreciated.

This is not difficult.
You need to work out one issue beforehand..
What IP address range does the computer get from the wifi router.. ?
If you get 10.0.x.x then you will need to adjust the settings on the TC to a different IP range.. eg 192.168.1.1 for the TC.
Tell me what IP you get on wireless. I will assume for now you are getting 192.168.x.x
In the ethernet setup on the laptop, choose configure IPv4 Manually.
Give the computer an IP address say 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet. Do not fill in router or dns values.
You can now find the ethernet linked TC and get internet via the airport.
On the TC itself, just leave it in router mode.. and ignore all the errors.. turn off the wireless.

The process is transparent. I have done it before.
Now, it gives me an error message when I try Wi-Fi:
"There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again.(5)"
When I try the ethernet cable connection it won't let me do automatic or custom.
I unplugged and replugged the Apple TV box but don't know how else to trouble shoot the lack of connectivity.

My TC won't startup with ethernet cables connected.

It will start up fine w/out ethernet cables, but with ethernet, it won't startup. I have two wired connections, my thunderbolt display/mbp and my cannon printer.
It will sit with amber light solid.
When I disconnect the two ethernet cables, it will startup fine. Then I connect the two cables and everything is good.
This is a new from apple store today 2tb TC. It's taken about 2 hours to get it setup until now I've figured out the ethernet cable issue. Is there a fix? I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow or in the next couple of days if there's no fix provided.

Well, it's working fine today. I'll continue to try it over the next couple of days and if it happens more, I'll take it back for an exchange. It happend quite a few times last night.
I have apple care for my mbp, so this should be covered on it. About 1.5 years left.

EMac File Sharing with Ethernet Cable

Hello All!
I was wondering how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
Now how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4 in my Signature. Thank you for the help.

Flash drives are great for probably your Toshiba and Intel iMac, since they likely have USB 2. The older Macs don't have USB 2 and it would take ages to transfer info on old USB 1.1.

Printer won't work with Ethernet cable connected to AEBS

I've been using my AEBS with built-in modem for a year with no problems. Today I got a DSL modem (finally available in my area) and when I connected the ethernet cable from the DSL modem to my AEBS, my printer stopped working. It now gives the following error message: "Printing Problem - the process "mdns" stopped unexpectedly with status 1". The printer is still available from the printer setup utility and I tried deleting and reinstalling the printer
I have tried several different variations of restarting the modem and AE in various orders, but no joy. However, when I disconnect the ethernet cable from the AE and restart it, I can print fine.
I have three computers on the network (G4 MDD PowerMac, G5 iMac, and C2D MPB) and I get the same error message from all three.
Any suggestions (perhaps an interpretive dance to the network gods?) on how to get both the DSL and printer to play nice at the same time??

Communication Error with wireless router, Works fine with Ethernet cable.

Video iChat is fine when my MBP and other MB's and MBP's are at my house using the Netgear 240 rangemax wireless router. I'm currently running High speed Internet via cable modem through Time Warner Cable. When I try to chat with them while they are at home, I get a communication error. I then tried to use the Ethernet cable hooked up to the cable modem to my MacBook Pro. It worked fine. I would like to use video iChat via my wireless router. I don't understand why it is not working. I think it is my router. Do I need to buy an Airport Extreme Base Station or can I still use this router. Can you possibly help me configure this Netgear router? The internet connection is fine when I use the wireless router.

I have not had very good experiences with the Netgear routers. I can't say that it is the router causing your problem, however, it might be the effective wireless bandwidth over your router. Do a speedcheck and determine the download and upload speed with wireless. Hopefully you're getting about 400Kbps up and 400Kbps down or about 1000Kbps in total.
