Setting "Append file extension" in PSE9 Trial

I downloaded the trial version, and when I open a RAW file and then go to save it, the .MRW (yes, I know that's old now!) stays in place and I have to type in the required extension,  even though I have set the option in the box below. Looking at the Preferences dialogue box, I tried to set this to 'Always', but note that it always defaults back to 'Never'. This is annoying, because I don't want to overwrite my RAW files. If anyone has upgraded to the full version yet, I would like to know if this is a feature of the trial which might be unlocked on upgrade.
I have PSE6 & PSE8 still installed on my Mac. I much prefer to use Bridge from PSE8 rather than the frankly awful (and pointless) Organiser.

Barbara,
  Thanks for the link, I've passed it off to the engineers to chew on.
Michael,
  The specific file that carries the seed of this bug is "Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Prefs.psp" in Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Settings. Trashing/renaming this file while PSE is closed will fix this particular bug. No other files need be removed. I plan on taking a closer look at this file to see what might be done.
Byard,
  I am using the same version of the software that everybody else gets. Actually, I never got the beta to install on my Mac (Windows worked fine). I think there might have been a hiccup with the first attempt at the install, because I cleaned my machine of all traces of PSE9 before installing the final release version and that installed without issue. I suggest the same for anybody else that had their system touched by the beta. I don't know if that explains any of the issues you are seeing. Because I can change any preferences besides the Saving Files without issue.
  This same behavior does not happen on the Windows side, mainly because this is not an option on the Windows side. You ALWAYS save an extension with Windows, that's just how the OS works. Windows reads a lot of book covers, and by that I mean it puts a lot of stock into the extension. It determines how Windows will treat the file. For Mac, an extension isn't needed, it's really there to make you feel more comfortable and to be more compatible with Windows. Mac reads the file for information about what applications it belongs to. Windows see .JPG and it has one response to that when you double click on it (this is called file association). On Mac, depending on where that particular JPEG file came from and what you've been doing with it will determine how it will be treated in the future.

  • Append file extension

    I want to shut off the automatic append file extension when saving a file in Illustrator CS3 to not have the .ai appear at the end of the file name. How do I do this?

    In a manufacturing company where naming conventions are in place, we don't want .ai placed into the file name on certain files. I am running a Mac and never had to have an extension in the filenames before cause Macs always hid the extension? I have the Finder preference to not show extensions but since Illustrator is placing it as part of the filename in the save dialog, it shows no matter what. What does adobe expect us to do, click on the file in the Finder and get infor, then click hide extension? We are making the conversion from Freehand to Illustrator (not by choice) and this is turning into a big nightmare on a lot of issues.
    Give me a lecture on the mapping issue. If I remove the .ai in the save dialog box before saving, I haven't seen any issues yet. My applescript studio applications don't save the .ai when they drive Illustrator. No issue there either. Tell me what you know about mapping issues.
    Don't want the app to automatically append file extension. Can it be done.... Yes or No?

  • Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

    in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box.  it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
    i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
    it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

    Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
    When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.
    In Word I get the expected result:
    When I save a file in Word with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the extension is automatically added (047. Crayon - Abstract.docx)

  • How to set default file extension in the FileChooser?

    We are trying to use the FileChooser but for some reason, it doesn't have any file extensions in the drop down menu (like in windows). Does anyone know how to put this in?
    Also, how do we set the file name for the saving file, rather than typing the name in ourself?
    Also, how do we position the file chooser dialog in the middle of the screen? Right now, it's in the top left corner of the screen.
    Here's our piece of code, used for saving file.
    FileChooser fileChooser = new FileChooser();
            File file = fileChooser.showSaveDialog(stage);
            /*User might clicked on the cancel button*/
            if (file != null) {
                try {
                    Writer output = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(file));
                    output.write(text);
                    output.close();
                } catch (IOException ex) {
                    logger.error("save file error", ex);
            }Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

    We are trying to use the FileChooser but for some reason, it doesn't have any file extensions in the drop down menu (like in windows). Does anyone know how to put this in?Have you read the API? What's the nested class of FileChooser that's listed immediately after it in the classes list?
    Also, how do we set the file name for the saving file, rather than typing the name in ourself?I don't see any API for that. You could file a RFE on kenai.
    Also, how do we position the file chooser dialog in the middle of the screen? Right now, it's in the top left corner of the screen.I don't see any API for that either.

  • Save as just started automatically appending file extension -- how to stop

    When I do file->save_as  the file name is automatically appended with the file type (ie: .jpg or .tiff). This just started and I do not know why. I do not want this as I am doing a save_as instead of save so I can append some tag info to the name of the file:  file name: foo  and I want to save as foo1. Having to delete the .jpg is annoying and will lead to errors. Why did this start and how do I go back to the old way it worked? I updated nothing when this started.
    thanks Ry

    Thanks Benjamin,
    Part of your description is correct. Old way of working:
           do save as: get filename without any extension
    If I change the file type (as you mentioned) then the file extension is added.
    So if I saved a jpg file and then I am working on a raw file and want to save it as a tiff I would do a save as. save as wants to save the file in the format previously saved in. So when making the change I first change the file name (which is easier without the extension present and then I change the file type, which then adds the new extension.
    having the extension added coming in is what has changed and is really annoying.
    I would like to thank all for the answers so far, hopefully there is a way to get back to the original behaviour, which by the way has been working that way for years.
    thanks ry

    This is correct, even after you have enumerated over the marked (xls and xlsx files) how do you intend to process these files. What are the subsequent tasks in the for each loop?

  • Setting proper file extensions for downloadable links?

    I'm trying to create a link on a webpage to download an InDesign file (*.indd) and a PDF.  The link for the pdf works fine, but whenver I try to test the page and download the .indd file from the website, I get a *.indd.html file and the size of the file has changed by a lot.  The link is correctly directed, and the file is correctly uploaded. Here is the website and code snippet used:
    http://www.cheungdesigns.info/MMM.html
    HTML code:
    <p><a href="MeatlessMeals.indd" target="_blank">InDesign file</a></p>
    Can anybody see the problem?

    Zip it.   Providing the file isn't too huge, a zipped file should download OK.

    Hello,
    I would like to set the file extension for cl_gui_frontend_services=>file_open_dialog such that my default extension in the file open dialogue is the .csv (comma-separated value) file. May I know how can I do that?

  • Photoshop CS6 stopped saving file extensions

    I am running PhotoShop CS6 on Mac Yosemite 10.10.2.  Photoshop suddenly stopped saving file extensions.  I can open the files saved on my computer, but others cannot because the file extension is missing.  Under preferences > file handling > append file extension, "always" is selected.  It doesn't matter which file format PSD, JPEG, PNG, etc., the file extension is not saved.  I have the capability to view the file, but if I send it to someone else, or if I save it to dropbox and download it back to my computer, the image cannot be viewed.

    Try resetting the Photoshop preference file: Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Opt+Shift as you initiate Photoshop's startup. Select "yes" when asked if you would like to continue with reset.

    You were right, but there's one thing many authors are not
    aware of.
    Technically the above are two completely _different_ URLs.
    Most servers
    are by default configured to automatically add the trailing
    slash if the
    URL looks like the first one and points to a directory on the
    server.
    But this causes a 301 redirect, which means that the browser
    has to send
    a second request with the correct URL.
    Every additional HTTP request means more network traffic and
    - even more
    important - a slower download. The first URL will always take
    longer to
    download than the second one. In the best case the users
    won't notice,
    but on high-traffic sites or in a congested network this can
    become an
    issue. Speed matters.

  • PSD files sent over FTP given 1kb file size, archived, and have .bin appended to extension

    I'm trying to deliver PSD files to someone over our server's FTP. If the FTP shared folder is accessed via a browser (like safari which is the main thing I've been testing on), the files in are listed as being only 1kb in size when each is approximately 60MB and all have had .bin appended to the .psd file extension. When the file is downloaded it's still 1kb and when opened it is associated with the archive utility which attempts to unarchive it and produces and identically named and extensioned file of 4kb size which cannot be opened by preview or text edit or photoshop.
    Changing the extension does not help as suggested here http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-25119.html . Also if the file is downloaded via 3rd party FTP software like cyber duck, though the file size is listed as 1kb, the correct size file is downloaded though still has the .bin extension. When this full sized .bin file is opened, archive utility instead of unarchiving attempts to archive it and produces a file roughly half the size which too cannot be opened. Speaking with apple care resulted in the suggestion that I use terminal command line to force the client to use binary mode when downloading the file which also downloads a file of correct size but with the .bin extension and that can not be opened.
    Is this a known issue with PSD files? I've not come accross this before, the server is configured correctly and different file types are successfully downloading with no changes to size or extension and then opening as they should upon receipt at the client side.

    Hi and thanks,
    that was my next port of call but I stumbled across a more permanent fix. Mac OSX server automatically converts files sent over FTP to something called MacBinary on the fly and it seems this process doesn't agree with PSD files. Someone else encountered this problem back in 2003 and found this solution
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-25119.html
    speaking to apple care they also sent a link for the official mac instructions for achieving the same thing here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20996
    and here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20645?viewlocale=en_US
    in the second explanation it's important to note for anyone attempting to follow this that if you're fixing the problem on MacOsX server rather than just MacOSX it isn't necessary to enable the root account as it is automatically enabled by default. Simply log out and log back in as root and use the same password as the first administrator account you set up when the server was first configured.

  • How to set default .PDF file extension for Form Downloads

    I am trying to find a way of setting the PDF file extension when I download forms.
    I author the forms under a Plus subscription and am then downloading the forms under a basic subscription Collaborator account (diffrent person)
    If I don't include .pdf as the file type when downloading a form with a unique name as the Collaborator, it downloads without a file extension.
    Remembering to continually add the pdf file extension is a pain so I'm hoping there is away of setting this as a defaulet for my 'collaborator' account ?

    Firstly, apologies for multiple posts, I received messages saying my comment hadn't posted and also checked my history before re-submitting.
    Okay, the process is
    1. Log in as the Author account and I can rename the file without having to set the extension
    2. Log in as the Collaboartor account - same PC, browser etc and it doesn't save with a default file extension; HOWEVER, I have done this whilst also being logged in on a diffrent browser as the Author
    3 I have just tried logging out as Author and only being in as the collaborator and the form downloaded with a default PDF.
    4. I had someone else log in as the collaborator from thei PC and browser whilst I was still signed inunder my author account and again they were unable to save as PDF by default
    This has me wondering if there is anything at play when you've got multiple Users?

  • Cannot set default programs for a file extension in Gnome

    After a gnome upgrade (cannot remember when), I can no longer set the default program for a particular file extension by right clicking the file in nautilus -> going to "properties" -> going to "open with" tab -> highlighting a program -> pressing "set as default".

    The program I was trying to set was totem for default video playback; wine had made windows media player the default player prior. Interestingly, once I installed gnome-mplayer; the default program changed to gnome-mplayer and I was then able to switch default programs. This error may be related to wine.

  • How to set the name for an 'unknown' file extension?

    Specifics:
    I have various file extensions that are recognized by my mac. I would like to know how to create a list of applications that can open it so I do not get a 'There is no Default Application to open this file' error. I would also like to be able to give these file extensions names recognized by the mac.
    Just like .txt is a "Textedit Document" and .html is a "HTML Document," I'd like to be able to change the name and assosication of a file and give it its own .icns if possible.
    As for the default applications, I know how to set a default application. However, if a mac does not recognize a file extension, adding a new default application to run the file wil actually erase the old one, which is a big pain, especially when your file can be opened with ANY text editor.
    I understand that this may involve hacking into the operating system's databases, but if anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Timo,
    My jdev version is 10.1.3.3.0, this is for R12. By PR i mean to say process request and PFR process form request in the controller.
    In the Process request of the controller, i am finding the checkbox bean and assigning the firepartialaction for it.
    Later in the process form request for the fired event, i am trying to handle the rendered property of the messagetextinput. Is this a right approach?
    my code below
    public void processRequest(OAPageContext oapagecontext, OAWebBean oawebbean)
    super.processRequest(oapagecontext, oawebbean);
    OAApplicationModule oaapplicationmodule = oapagecontext.getApplicationModule(oawebbean);
    OAMessageCheckBoxBean oamessagecheckboxbean = (OAMessageCheckBoxBean)oawebbean.findChildRecursive("X_FLAG");
    if(oamessagecheckboxbean != null)
    oapagecontext.writeDiagnostics(this, "Message check box Bean found:", 1);
    FirePartialAction firepartialaction = new FirePartialAction("change");
    oamessagecheckboxbean.setAttributeValue(PRIMARY_CLIENT_ACTION_ATTR, firepartialaction);
    oamessagecheckboxbean.setFireActionForSubmit("change", null, null, true);
    oapagecontext.writeDiagnostics(this, "setting fire event", 1);
    public void processFormRequest(OAPageContext oapagecontext, OAWebBean oawebbean)
    super.processFormRequest(oapagecontext, oawebbean);
    oapagecontext.writeDiagnostics(this, "Inside Process Form Request", 1);
    if("change".equals(oapagecontext.getParameter(OAWebBeanConstants.EVENT_PARAM)))
    OAMessageTextInputBean bean = (OAMessageTextInputBean)oawebbean.findChildRecursive("X_NUMBER");
    if(bean!=null){
    bean.setRendered(Boolean.TRUE);}

  • How to set file extension?

    Hello there,
    I have added the ablility of saving the data in my program. I was wondering how do I restrict the file extension when the user wants to save the file?
    What I mean is right now, when a user saves the data to file, they can choose the file name and the file extension. I do not want to allow them to choose file extension. I want to have a predefined extension, for example .usr or .dat.
    I have seen this in many applications but I do not know how to implement this. I would appreciate it if someone could help me.
    Thanks for your help!

    How you are getting the fname from the user has an impact on how you do this, but not what needs to be done. What is required to have something that takes the fname from the user and parses it, extracting a fname. Once you have that, just append the extension that you want and save the file.
