Setting Brightness/Contrast in iTunes

I have searched high and low and can not find the information on google or here on the forums. Is there a way to adjust the video settings in iTunes? All the m4v movies I play in iTunes are to bright, blacks are very grey. When I play them in Windows Media Player they are perfect, blacks are black. I know I can adjust my video settings using my graphics card drivers, specifically nvidia, but as it sits I have it set to allow the individual programs to do the video adjusting. If I do change my settings system wide in the nvidia control panel it then makes other videos to dark. Maybe I'm crazy but I'm will be shocked if there is no way to adjust video settings in iTunes considering it is a used for renting and purchasing movies.

So my question is - what did I miss setting up in iTunes that I now need to do? A silly thing to do I know appreciate any advice.

For iTunes preferences, start iTunes, go to the iTunes Menu in your menu bar and select "preferences"; or a faster way, command key + , (true for most applications).
Once in the preference menu you can customize the various settings for iTunes if the default settings are lacking. Some of the more important preferences are found in the Advance panel for burning, importing and general.
Good Luck with your Mac.
BTW, there are excellent books for Mac computing and Tiger. One of my favorites is David Pogues "Tiger - the unwritten manual". Also, would be beneficial to understand the various maintenance requirements of the Mac. Dr. Smoke, a member of the forums, has an excellent primer here.

  • Set default Settings for Brightness/Contrast Slider

I am in the throes of editing several hundred pictures. My camera has a standard tendency toward too bright and not enough contrast. While editing about a hundred pictures in Photoshop Elements 3.0 last night, the brightness/Contrast and Shadow highlight slider suddenly retained the last setting - which GREATLY enhanced my editing efficiency! Alas, today it is back to normal - the Brightness/Contrast slider default is 0 for it's associated sliders and the Shadow Highlight option is again at 50%/0/0 for the three associated sliders.
Is there a way to set a default value for the associated sliders for each of these?
(I had installed Photoshop Elements 5.0 on a trial basis up until yesterday and also have Photoshop Elements 4.0 installed, but it is such a hassle to use, I just gave up on it (and 5.0 has the same issue as 4.0 - no concurrent file browser when editing.))

Can't help you with Shadows/Highlights, but you do have an option with Brightness/Contrast. Instead of going to Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Brightness/Contrast, go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast instead. Once you've established the parameters you want for Brightness and Contrast, you can open up additional pictures and drag-and-drop the adjustment layer onto each new picture, retaining the settings from the first adjustment. This also allows you to quickly tweak the settings on the succeeding pictures, as adjustment layers can be readjusted ad infinitum.
If only Shadows/Highlights had an adjustment layer option...

  • How to set brightness and contrast of video please

Hi, how can I set brightness and contrast of video in OSMF please?
I tried add filters to MediaContainer and VideoSurface of VideoElement, but doesn't work.

I think I find the reason, OSMF uses StageVideo other than Video when StageVideo is available. StageVideo doesn't support filters or mask.
So the answer would be no way unless I switch back to Video.

  • Greyed Out Brightness/Contrast onThinkvision

I have a Lenovo LCD monitor connected to my E520 laptop. I decided against my better judgement to adjust the colour settings today and after setting the brightness up to 100% I no longer have access to the brightness control on my monitor. I've tried restarting, but the brightness/contrast button will not respond. Can anyone help?

Some additional info: the brightness button on the monitor no longer works. I can access the settings by double-clicking the screens enter button, but in that menu brightness settings are greyed out. The computer/Windows is not remembering my calibration settings. I adjusted the gamma and colours to compensate, but it forgets after a few cold starts. Several reinstalls of the drivers doesn't help, trying to update the drivers doesn't help. The brightness adjusts on my laptop, but not on the external monitor. The monitor is an L197 Wide, laptop an E520, Windows 7 sp1, all updates and patches applied. I also tried creating a new user account and switching the graphics, no luck there either.

It is not about payment of $19.95 (Igalsses) or $7.99(webcam settings). This is a very basic setting that should be available in the system settings. The automatic setting of the internal cam does not work great on low lighting as everyone is aware.
i am just amazed how users take in lying down and suggest solutions such as paying for a 3rd party paid app or improving the lighting in your room.

  • How do I save an edited movie with brightness, contrast adjustments

I am using Quicktime pro ver 7.6.4(518.35) and I love its editing features especially the rotation and brightness adjustment features. Is it possible to save a move with these edits so they will be view correct with the basic Quicktime player? I have a movie that I edited the contrast and brightness and resave it as its original MOV file. The new contrast and brightness setting show up when I play the video on the same computer that has my Quicktime pro on it. But, when I play it on another computer with the basic Quicktime player the movie reverts to the original Contrast and brightness. Am I doing something wrong? I even tried to export it to another format and lose the video portion of the movie.
I would hope that I could fully edit a movie save it and give it to my family so they can view it like it was edited. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Ok, after some searching, I found the export filter settings...
However, the exported video appearance does not match that of the source video with similar A/V settings.
Example 1 = Source video (.3g2) with A/V settings, recorded with screen capture software. *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezvE6sUeUb0*
Example 2 = Source video with similar export filter settings (brightness/contrast) *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tQYXWX17zQ*
When the video gets brighter, the brightness dims and when the video gets darker, the brightness increases... contrast settings seemed to be ignored.
All I can say is.. what the HECK?
It's pretty sad when I have to rely on screen capture software to get the desired result! Luckily the source video was taken with a cell phone, so there was no noticeable loss in video quality.

  • Brightness/Contrast issue

when I add the brightness/contrast filter to my footage and adjust it-the picture looks normal, until I render, in which case I get flickering multi-colored frames. I'm editing prores422HQ footage at 23.98fps. The timeline is set to the correct setting, and I've tried different render settings with no luck. Any help would be appreciated...

In support of Jim, (and I don't know what camera you are using when I say this). But pro gear, tends to record in a bigger colour space (higher colour resolution 4.2.2) therefore when adjusting (using FCP filters for example) there's greater latitude to tolerate the adjustments. In my early days of single chip, just a few minor tweaks in brightness contrast can have the image fall off really dramatically, so you do need to get the image right when you record it i.e. even a single chip will record a great image when lit well, but under-lit, it's very difficult to make adjustments using FCP filters.

  • Brightness/Contrast edit tool messes up my clips.HELP!

When I try to apply brightness/contrast to my iMovie 6.0.3 video clips (because so many of them end up much darker on iMovie than on my camcorder), it helps with the brightness, but after the rendering is done, my clip is messed up in 2 ways: 1) the sound is mainly gone, except for a few jerky sounds here and there; 2) visually, the clip is now jerky--like it's both in slow motion and being fast forwarded at the same time, if that makes sense. I've tried again and again, looked for advice all over the internet, to no avail, and wonder if it's just a glitch in my software and if so, what to do about it? (I did download an update on 6.0 from the Apple site, but it didn't help). Thanks!!

    Hi Z
    As Catspaw writes.
The Brightness & Contrast tool in iM6 should work - a new account is a smart way to test
    where the problem originate.
This tool in iMovie HD 6 - is crude and hard to use/get a good result with.
In iMovie'08 - this is one of the few things that is a real improvment but the loss
of so much other tools results in a useless situation (as Catspaw - I don't nearly use it)
    Solution: FinalCut Express 4
    • Superb tools to correct brigtness, contrast and colors
    • So much more
    Cons
    • COST - It's not free but price is reduced with 30% after introduction of iMovie'08
    • Some new learning. Mainly in starting up (setting up scratch discs & Capturing process)
Some says steap learning curve - there is a step but mainly there are so much new
tools so it's really to learn as You progress with Your movie.

  • Are there brightness/contrast controls in Flash Player?

    Dear Anyone.
I use Flash Player to watch streaming content on a bunch of websites. It's great when the video's been well made but on some of the websites it's VERY dark.
Are there TV-style brightness/contrast controls anywhere within any of the Flash Player interfaces, so I can brighten the picture up a bit? Or is there any other way of doing it - the monitor controls seem to brighten the area AROUND the picture, off the screen, not the streaming picture itself.
    Yours hopefully
    ulrichburke

As was explained to me, the latest version of Flash Player, with Protected Mode disabled, is the same as version "10.3.whatever," the recommended work-around, in terms of basic security updates.
As Jeromie Clark notes:   FROM: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4744651#4744651
    " Jeromie Clark,
      Oct 2, 2012 5:42 PM    in reply to Ortho_Fan
To the extent possible, we maintain Flash Player 10.3 with critical security fixes in Flash Player 11.4.  There is a functional difference, in that new features are not present.
My concern with recommending people disable ProtectedMode via mms.cfg, is that that preference will persist forever and it's extremely unlikely that the average persons is going to remember to undo that preference at some point in the future.  We see sandboxing as a critical component of effectively mitigating an ever-evolving class of sophisticated security threats.  We're mostly ahead of the threat curve at the moment with sandboxing, but attackers will ultimately adapt and up the ante at some point.  If that day comes and a large population of users has sandboxing disabled, that would be an unfortunate outcome, and something we'd like to avoid.  To that end, we've recommended Flash Player 10.3, because it is maintained (but will eventually be deprecated) from a security standpoint, and because it prevents that persistent preference from being set. "
The important thing is to remember to re-enable Protected Mode by deleting "ProtectedMode=0" from the mms.cfg file after installing the latest version of Flash Player.  (It can always be added again, as I have done, when the newest version continues to cause problems.)

  • Brightness/Contrast in CS6 - Best Method?

    Hi there,
Can anyone please tell me what is the best method for adjusting brightness and contrast in CS6? Is it by simply adjusting the Brightness/Contrast properties in an Adjustment Layer or is there a better way of going about it?
    Thanks!

The advice I have gotten is use it on an adjustment layer. It's "non-destructive", won't  permanently alter your picture and you can return to the picture  for further adjustments or delete the layer later on.
When using the brightness/contrast setting, try the Auto button first, and if you are not satisfied with that, set brightness to 100, contrast to 50 and adjust from there.
Leave the "Legacy" box unchecked. It mimics how the older versions of b/c use to behave, causing clipping.
Yes, there are better ways, like curves, but I'm assuming you want to work with b/c for now.

  • Always "use legacy" for brightness/contrast

    Hi,
I am on photoshop CS4 and I would like to always have the "use legacy" case ticked in ""brightness/contrast" (by default). I managed to do it on mac (but cannot remember how) and was wondering if you knew how to do it on pc (win 7).
Many thanks for any help !!!
    P

Just complete an operation once ([ OK ]) with that setting checked.  It sticks for next time.

  • Brightness & Contrast control for SMP

I did raise my suggestion at Google Youtube discussion and wish that you could also provide an option for these controls to be available on 1.0 release, it is easy to implement using filter, useful for those using projector screen where audience could not see the dark themed video clearly could be compensate with brightness/contrast setting.

I mean a widget as creating a new button in the control bar.
For example an engineer might need to create a FastForward widget and add it to the control bar just after the play button. He'll need to configure the widget UI, it's layout and the logic that it should provide.
In in this use case, you might be able to create your brightness control widget. Won't this better then adding this behavior directly to the player code?

  • Brightness/contrast, normalization, etc.

Hi everybody, i just upgraded to Mavericks and now have the new iMovie. I hope this hasn't been covered elsewhere but i'm wasting A LOT of time trying to get productive again on this new iMovie version.
I can't find the brightness/contrast settings adjustments for the video and the normalization setting for the audio. Can anybody help?
Completely and totally frustrated with this thing.
    Paul

The Enhance button improves both the video and audio quality of a clip with just one click, and you can also use the Adjustments Bar to make more detailed corrections. Visit the “Make manual color adjustments” and “Make automatic audio improvements” sections on the page below for more information:

  • Brightness/Contrast - Lighting

If something was recorded in a low light setting, (wedding reception indoors with dim lighting and candlelight) can FCE be used to modify the scene and add some brightness/contrast so the viewer can see more than shadows and things like that? If so, how?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you very much Tom!
The person for whom this footage was intended states they are unable to see anything but dark shadows and images on their TV and pc.
For me as the editor, the footage appears mostly clear keeping in mind it was a low-lit room and you can see people in motion, etc. on two TV's in my home and two pc monitors. The FCE manual says to only do color correction on a broadcast video monitor, not on Mac or another television.
Aside from telling them to buy a new TV and pc, (haha) I'm not sure specifically what to fix in this case.
Thanks once again for your help initially.
