Setting Composition Rule In Mail

THE SET-UP
I've got mail configured to send and receive from a gmail account and my school-issued student account with the outrageously long extension @student.schoolname.edu. I use my school account strictly for communicating with other students and faculty. Everything else goes through gmail. The extensions for faculty are simply @schoolname.edu
THE PROBLEM
Seeing as how my composing rules are currently set to default new messages as being sent from my gmail account, and seeing as how I'm too spacy to double check stuff and switch my address in the message window before I send, I realized I just sent a whole bunch of emails to school people from my gmail. This is certainly not a tragedy, it's just kind of annoying and unprofessional-looking in my opinion.
HERE'S THE QUESTION
When I'm composing message, is there a way to program Mail or set a rule so that when I enter "schoolname.edu" in the TO: line, the message will default to my school account?
For example, if I open a new message window and type "[email protected]" or "[email protected]," I'd like for the sending address to change to my school address rather than my gmail.
I've clicked around in the menus and haven't seen anything incredibly obvious to this effect, so I'm hoping somebody out there can help. If you can't, I guess I'll just have to learn to double check things.

no, there is now way to do that in mail.

  • TS3276 Setting Rules in Mail, and misunderstanding the terms.

Just tried, for the first time, setting a Rule in mail to deal with holiday messages. Thought sending it to 'Every message' would be appropriate, as couldn't make sense of any other options. Now EVERYONE, who ever sent me a message has received the absence message, some people hugely multiple times. They would be correct to be very irritated.
    Anyone else every done this?

    Hi Redkite7,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The following article will provide some information about sending automatic replies.
Mail (Mountain Lion): Send automatic replies
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11760
I gathered this information from the Help menu in the Mail application for you:
    Send automatic replies
You can create a rule to have Mail automatically reply to incoming messages.
Choose Mail > Preferences, and then click Rules.
Click Add Rule and type a descriptive name for the rule.
Set the conditions necessary for the rule to apply to a message.
From the “Perform the following actions” pop-up menu, choose “Reply to Message.”
Click “Reply message text” and enter the text for your reply message.Mail will include the text you enter, along with the full text of the original message, in the reply that it sends.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Rules in Mail are not working!!

I set up rules in mail to moved messages after 7 days old from date send and will not apply! not working! if this can help I am using an AOL account. . . any suggestions on how to solve this issue. I am also running SL . . thanks.

Hey, Ray & welcome to the forums.
Don't set a 'rule' - go to Mail preferences/general/advanced and do it there √ instead.

  • Set up rule and lost mail!

I thought I was doing a 'good' thing when I set up a rule in Mail that said if the email address does not contain my exact email address, please move it to the junk folder. I set it up for both my cable company's email address and for my Mac address. Went back into Mail- all messages gone from both accounts!! Wiped out. So I went back into Rules and removed both rules. The Mac mail reappeared but my cable company emails did NOT reappear. Now I can probably recover them cuz I back up every morning but since the backup this morning, of course I have gotten some emails which did not get backed up. What happened?! Where did they go? Can I get them back? Ugh! Judy

I tried rebuilding the mailbox and that didn't help. Judy

  • Mail doesn't show a new mail icon when you set up rules

I've just transfered over to Mail from entourage and love it, apart from one thing.
I set up rules so all my emails go into folders ie work, friends and now when I get a new email which goes into one of these folders I don't get the little red circle on the mail application icon in my dock.
I do however get it when a mail comes in which isn't part of my rules and goes into my inbox, normally someone who I'm not waiting for an email.
It's not the end of the world but does mean if I forget to check my emails I might miss something important.
    Any ideas?

I'm now able to see when i've got new emails after your pointer. It is however telling me I have 10 new mails which aren't there?
Do you know why it would do this, I thought perhaps it was thinking a draft was an email but i've only got 3 in there not 10.
    Thanks

  • How to set up rules for emails to go to junk on iphone 4

i have an iphone4 that i use for work and a coworker sent out over 40,000 emails which has now overloaded my email to where i cannot send or recieve emails can i set up rules for his emails to go straight to junk? and how my email address is linked to iphone4s and ipad as well.
ps i did set up the rules on my desktop but it didnt seem to work or flow over to the iphone or ipad or maybe i just need to delete the emails? however theres literally 30,000 of them who do i do that quickly? please

The Mail app on the iPhone doesn't support filters. You'd need to do that on the server side (not desktop). There is just no quick way to delete 30,000 emails.  At this point, I would remove the email account from your phone, delete the offending emails from your account, then add the account back to the iPhone.
I would also report the co-worker to your IT department (if they haven't already noticed) for sending that many emails. I'm surprised that it didn't cause issues.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I remove a flag using a rule in Mail.app?

I'm using Mail Act-On to flag messages that are important. I also have got a smart mailbox that displays only those messages that are flagged, this is my "To Do" mailbox.
Once I've read and answered the message I want to remove the flag, preferrably via a rule using Mail Act-On as well. However in the rules dialog in the Mail.app preferences there's only the option to set a flag, not to remove one.
Can anyone help: how can I remove a flag using a rule?? Maybe via Applescript as the last resort?
    Thanks for any advice Jan

    Hi Jan
I haven't gotten around to put unread and unflag into Mail-ActOn but MailTags has the functionality. MailTags also allows you to mark a message unread via act-On rule.
It is interesting to note that apple doesn't include unflag and unread as the rules were originally intended to apply only to new messages (of which none should be read or flagged) with that logic, there would be no need for unread, unflagg.
@David: The reason to do it via Act-On rule would be to set up a sequence of events, one of which is to unflag, others may be to set keywords, move messages, set colors etc.

  • This is regarding CBMA in SAP PI 7.3.1. I have set up the alert mail using default java mail client.I do receive the alerts via mail. But my requirement is to direct all the mails to Business workplace inbox in ECC.

This is regarding CBMA in single stack SAP PI 7.3.1. I have set up the alert mail using default java mail client.I do receive the alerts via mail. But my requirement is to direct all the alert mails to Business workplace inbox in ECC.
So I need to set up PI to redirect mails to ECC Business workplace user inbox (sbwp). From here rules are set up & routed per distribution list.
Please guide me how I can achieve this requirement.

    Hi,
yes, it is a little bit different. This is the issue.....
But I am not sure if your links will help:
    1) /people/william.li/blog/2008/02/13/sap-pi-71-mapping-enhancements-series-using-graphical-variable
is about a different solution. I do not need to count the number of lines of the source message.
And the second variable is about concat line by line from unbound node to unbound node.
    My issue is:
    Souce:
    Message line (0...unbound) ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    .    ResultLine   (1..1)
    Mapping:
    =>   ResultLine1
           ResultLine2
ResultLine........          => into UDF to an element  (1..1) in one mapping operation.
So that all "ResultLine"s are included.
The result is explained in the given link for Mail attachment with UDF.
So I am not sure how to use this thread for my issue.
In the comments of that blog Christoph Gerber writes that the new variable feature can only handle single values.
So it is not suitable for my purposes as I have a list of values here that needs to be moved into the target message field.
    2) http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/Java/UsingEditJavaSectioninMessageMapping
shows where to find the button "Java section" which is not available here in 7.1
    3) /people/sap.user72/blog/2005/10/01/xi-new-features-in-sp14
too is about the nice little button for Java Section that is no longer existing on PI 7.1 screen for mappings.
So my issue is: How to replace the Java section function with global variables in PI 7.1?
    Best regards
    Dirk

  • How do I create a rule in mail that only applies to flagged messages?

I would like to create a rule in mail that would delete messages of a certain age, but I need to keep some messages safe. I would like to be able to flag these or put them in a mailbox and have a rule making messages with those flags or mailboxes safe from being deleted. Is that something I can do? Thanks!

You can create a local mailbox and move the messages you want to keep there. I don't see any kind to rule you can make to move a flagged message, so you would probably have to do it manually, unless you can use other criteria to identify messages you wish to keep.
If you're using the server settings in mail to determine the age before deletion, the local mailboxes would be safe from that deletion. You can set to store messages on server for up to 30 days before deletion. This will work for IMAP accounts, but don't apply to the inbox. Just to the other main mailboxes such as Sent, Trash, etc.
If you create a rule to delete messages after a certain age (outside of what the servers would do automatically), I think it would only work on the inbox if at all, but not sure. If it were applied through all, it would delete them from the local folders also.
You can create a smart mailbox and input certain criteria such as flagged, age. You could exclude any mailbox that you don't want to include, such as local folders, by adding that to part of the criteria. You would have to delete the messages manually as they accumulate. This would be useful when you save a lot of mail, but say you only want to keep messages less than a year old. This would help you instantly see messages that meet your deletion criteria without having to manually check messages for age.

  • Cannot establish new Rules in Mail 7.3

For at least the last 6 months when I try to set up new Rules in Mail, they don't stay. The old ones I set up >6 months ago always appear to work, but if I define a new rule and apply it immediately it works, but next time I open Mail it is gone from the list of Rules.
Any suggestions for how to fix this? I like to filter some incoming messages into certain mailboxes using Rules but can no longer do this because new Rules  have become ephemeral
    TIA for any help.

  • How to amend Rules in Mail

I am using Mail on my Mac and also have it configured on my iPhone and iPad.
I have an alias e-mail address and set up a rule for any mails to that e-mail address to go straight into a specific folder (mailbox) within Mail.
I am now trying to amend the rule but cannot access it.
I have tried via Mail > Preferences but no rules are displayed.
I have also tried to delete the folder and then send a test mail to the e-mail address, but when the mail arrives in the inbox it just creates a new folder again.
How can I amend the rule in Mail?
    Thank you

Many thanks. Would be more helpful if the rules in Mail on my Mac reflected those in iCloud but I followed your advice and made the change successfully.
    Two other linked questions:
    1. Why can't I access icloud.com on my iPad? (to effect the change, I had to use my Mac to go to icloud.com)
    2. Can the e-mail alias addresses be colour coded so that I can easily identify incoming mail?
    Thank you

  • Why are rules in Mail so troublesome?

Here is my question. In Mail v.7.3 (1878.6), in the top left of the email in bold letters it says a one-word company name for example "XYZ".
    So I did the following:
In Preferences/Rules the rule is set to
If: any of the following conditions are met
    From contains "XYZ"
Perform the following actions Set Color of background green.
When I get emails from "XYZ" or "XYZ Pharmacy" or "[email protected]" the background is green in the email from "XYZ" but not the others.
Am I setting the rule incorrectly? Thanks for any suggestions.

The XYZ you're seeing in the upper left hand corner is the first letter of each word in the company's name.  What's in the From field may not be the same.   For instance for emails from my web hosting service, Host Excellence this is what shows up:
So a Rule with HE in the From field would not catch those emails.  You need to use what is actually in the From field instead of that circle.

  • Using "Rules" causes mail to be "read"

When I set up rules to move incoming email to a special folder, I noticed that these emails do not show up as unread, even though I have not read them. Apparently the process of using a "rule" to sort them causes them to be marked as "read" and therefore missed unless specially looked for.
Is there anyway to turn off this automatic "read" that "rules" performs so that unread email show up in the "Mail" box as unread, without having to look for them one by one?
I have them moved to a local folder - that seems to be part of the problem. Unread files in local folders are not tagged in the main mail icon.

If you observe the Mail icon on the bottom of the screen, it has a red number indicating the number of unread messages.
Apparently, this only signifies the number of unread messages in the "online" inbox. Those that are moved to a local inbox on the computer do not register.
In other words, the Mail icon indicates unread messages stored on the Mac server. Once a message is moved to a local mailbox via the rules, it does not show up as an unread message on the deskcop icon.
Annoying, but not a real problem. I have to actually open the mail program and look inside to see if I have any unread messages.
I would suggest to Mac to use Red for unread messages in the online mailbox and Green for all other unread messages which are stored locally. It would be a nice update.

  • Can I set a rule to move outgoing messages?

    Hi all
Mail rules (Tiger) seem to only apply to incoming mail automatically. I want the mail in the Sent folder for a POP account to automatically move to a folder that belongs to an IMAP account (.mac), so I have access to those messages on all my computers. I know I can manually move the messages, and that you can manually apply a rule to selected messages, but I want it to happen whenever a message is sent from that account. Have I overlooked something obvious?
I suppose I could send everything from my .mac account and use the Reply-To field, but I'd have to choose that on a message-by-message basis. Too much mousing.
    Thanks for any ideas.

    Hi,
We are now on version 3.0 of the Mail application... I am using Leopard and have just checked out Mail.
I too want to be able to set a rule to move outgoing messages to the Mailbox of my preference.
We can do it in Entourage. We can do it in Eudora. Why, oh why, can't we do it in Mail? This is the reason I cannot switch to Mail. Why would anybody want to keep thousands of unorganized messages in the Sent Mailbox?
Or am I missing some hidden function of Mail that does something similar to this?
Anyone with experience using Mail have a suggestion?

  • Rules: can Mail move messages if they are 'X days old'? Seems not!

    Hi,
I set up a bunch of rules on Mail, to move messages that were sent from certain people and that had been in my Inbox for a certain minimum period of time into special folders so as to automate the cleanup of my Inbox to some degree.
For example, the rule for messages from my work is as follows.
If ALL the following conditions are met:
From Contains (name of company mail server)
Date Received Is Greater Than 3 Days Old
    Perform the following actions:
    Move Message to mailbox Work
Right, so this works the first time I write it, and never again after that. I would have thought that whilever the rule was active, if Mail ever detected that there were messages from work that had been sent more than 3 days ago, it would automatically move them, but it doesn't. Since setting the rule up months ago it only ever worked the first time I wrote it and it asked if I wanted to apply it.
What am I doing wrong? Or is what I'm asking for not actually possible with the rules?
    Cheers,
    Owen

    Hi Owen
rules are applied 1: when mail is received, 2: (optionally) when the rule is first set up, and 3: if messages are selected & the 'apply rules' menu command chosen.
to apply rules to messages you’ve already received, select the messages in the viewer window and then choose Message > Apply Rules.
A smart mailbox will evaluate constantly, although I appreciate that's not the same thing.
