Setting default JPEG quality in Preview Export

Does anyone happen to know how to change the default quality setting of the JPEG export in Preview? I pretty much always need it to be best, and it's a little bit of a pain to have to adjust it from medium every time...

Hi can you navigate to the Start menu and then into HP and the HP Solution Center? From within that, select settings (probably on the lower right side of the HP Solution Center screen. In settings, click on Printer Settings where you can change the defaults for your printer.
I am an HP employee.
Feel free to provide Kudos if I have helped you!

  • Setting default screen quality to "High"

    Captivate v5.5
I am recording some screen shots from our corp. website to slides created in Captivate v5.5. I have set all the slides in Captivate with screen quality "High" yet all the slides I import after recording have screen quality "low".
I know I can change them but wonder is there a way to set the fault screen quality to "high" so all new slides added are "high" quality - or whatever I want them to be rather than having to keep changing them.

    Thank you Anjaneai and Lilybiri,
So the way it works at the moment is this. When you create a project each slide you add will always be set to "low" quality and there is no way to change this in preferences or global settings.
When you preview you work it will be based on "low" quality slides unless you change them one by one as you import them.
Once you have finished the creation of your project and publish it, provided you have made the required changes in Project Settings - all slides that were "low" will be changed to the required quality setting as per the project settings in preferences.
When you open the project again - to edit it for example, I assume the slide quality is still "low".
I agree with you Lilybiri - Slide Quality should be an option in Preferences and the default settings should be "Optimised".
    Thanks again both.

  • PageMaker 6.5 set default PostScript printer for PDF export

My boss uses PageMaker 6.5 and it appears when she uses the Export to PDF option it is selecting a PostScript printer at random and asking it to "print to file" to create the PostScript file that it later gives to Distiller to create the PDF.  The problem is, she has a "virtual PDF print driver" installed that is not unlike the Adobe PDF printer driver, except it either doesn't support "print to file" or maybe just doesn't like something about the way PageMaker is using it.  It works great from other apps, but not PageMaker.  Anyway, is there a way to force PageMaker to use a specific PS printer for this, instead of picking the first one it finds?  I thought it might be alphabetical order based on driver or printer name, or port name, but I've tried changing all of those, and no luck.  I did install a new PS printer, and that worked for a bit (so I assumed it was using the most recent printer installed), but now it is selecting the virtual one again, and not working... not sure why.
If she sets the default printer to Adobe PDF Printer (she has Acrobat 9), it uses that one, and everything works fine.  She doesn't want to use that for her default printer though, and the printer she wants as her default isn't a PostScript printer, so PM doesn't try to use it.
Maybe a registry setting or something?  Or someone that can confirm the order that PageMaker looks for a printer to use, so that I can maybe trick it in to using a specific one?

If it wasn't my boss, I'd just tell her to do that.  She's been using PM for many many years, and hard to retrain yourself.  Of course, this might be the best option.  Seems like a weird design to "pick a printer at random" though, so hoping someone knows of some hidden option to force a specific printer.

  • Set default slide quality to Optimised

    Captivate v5.5
Is there anyway to select the default settings of slides and all subsequent slides added to a project?
From what I can see a project starts off with the quality of each slide set as "Low" and each slide added is also by default set to "low".
I would like all my slides to be either "Optimised" or "High".
I know I can select them all and change their quality as I go or later, but would make sense to allow this to be done within Edit /  Object Style Manager or Preferences at the start of the creation of a project.
Maybe I am missing the option.....
    Noel

    Hi Noel,
There is no way in the Object Styles, slides are not considered as objects.
I don't know about a way to set the default quality to Optimised before starting a project. Maybe you know it already, was so happy about it, but since 6.1 the default quality is now Optimised.
What can be changed in Preferences, and if you do that before opening a project it will be applied to all future projects, is to go to SWF Size & Quality, and uncheck 'Retain Slide Quality' and set the option to High (Optimised is not there). That will not change the quality while editing, but once published you'll get High for all slides.

  • Jpeg Quality setting

I have tryed to find a reasonable value for jpeg quality setting when exporting images for use like sending to a lab for printing.
Comparing the Photoshop scale of 0-12 with the Lightroom scale of 0-100 on some typical images I found the following:
PS 6 is similar to LR 50
PS 7 similar to LR 60
PS 8 similar to LR 65 (62-69 gives same value)
PS 9 similar to LR 75 (70-76 gives same value)
PS 10 similar to LR 80 (77-84 gives same value)
PS 11 similar to LR 90 (85-92 gives same value)
PS 12 similar to LR 100 (93-100 gives same value)
Choosing "max" from the dialog in PS results in quality 10 (unless changed manually to 11 or 12), the value I normally use when converting to jpeg, and this seems to equal the value 80 in LR. I noted that the scale in LR is not linear, the resulting file sizes changes in a limited number of steps.
My conclusion from the test is that a setting of 80 in LR should be sufficient for all practical purposes when exporting a jpeg file (assuming that there is no significant difference between PS quality 10-12 for a file that is "final" and need no more adjustments).
Any views on "normal" setting of jpeg quality setting in LR for various purposes?
    Sigge

To me it would depend on the purpose. I do a lot of printing at home, so I don't use jpegs for that. But, for high quality prints done externally, I believe a lot of people resize their files in Photoshop and then sharpen for the print job, then save either to jpeg or tiff. Tiff is the safest because it avoids the lossy compression of a jpeg. If your resize is successful and you need to save to jpeg, then I imagine the highest quality setting would be desirable.
For the web, you would also need to resize, using a resolution of 72 ppi, to fit your desired display size, then sharpen, then save the image. Again, is there a reason to not use the highest quality when saving a web image? Speed of display, I suppose. But there's a tradeoff.
I use PBase as a public web gallery and they have a nifty feature: you upload a file and they create three display sizes. When they're done you can tell them to delete the original. When I do that I save jpegs in LR to 80 -- it makes for faster uploading.

  • Poor Image quality upon PDF export

    hi,
issue: images lose quality when viewed in PDFs
i've searched/read these and other forums for the past few days and have tried just about every suggestion out there in order to get better quality images in my PDFs and nothing works.. it's as if everyone is talking some theory without actually testing/proving what they're saying.
are pdfs inherently bad at handling raster images?
i have a few 800x1200 px renders (tiffs/jpgs) that i'd like to include in a PDF.. i'm using A4 landscape orientation because when viewed at full size on a 24" monitor, it's the size i'd like it to be (i'm not concerned with printing this pdf.. monitor only)
the images when view full size in the pdf are a bit smaller than viewing the original images full size however, the quality is a lot worse.
honestly, i'll try or retry your suggestions but at this point, i'm more/less looking for an explanation as to why this happens because from what i can tell, it's going to happen no matter what
    gracias

Not sure what you are expecting.
well, i'm certainly expecting better quality than what i'm getting..
The jpg is contrasty and it is lower resolution than you need, but you did say that above. Which means I am not looking at what you are looking at.
The color space is srgb and the conversion from the tiff would have reduced the quality a little or a lot depending on your settings.
it doesn't matter if i use the original tiff or the jpg.. for all intents and purposes, let's forget i even have the tiff.. the jpg should look the same in the pdf (imo)
Did you print to pdf or Export? If you exported, did you use "Best" as your setting.
i've done all sort of methods.. but yeah, always at highest quality if said method allows such settings..
It has lost some contrast and is a little blurry. It looks to my eye like the degradation you get from setting the jpeg quality a little low.
well, no.. it has gone from something that is in focus to something that is out of focus.. if i open the jpg in photoshop and do a 'save as' jpg with the quality set to 3 (with 12 being best), i will get similar results as putting the jpg in a pdf.. (albeit, a different type of quality loss but just as bad)
you've seen the comparison but just in case someone else wants to look, check here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/jeffhammond/Sites/imgs/origVSpdf.jpg
that's a screenshot showing the jpg on the right and the pdf output on the left (both viewed in preview)..
it's unacceptable.. but like i said earlier, i think this is an inherent aspect of pdfs and i'd settle for a decent explanation as to why it happens..
OSX has some very smart frameworks built in, which do make bitmaps displayed on screen in Cocoa apps look better than they should. Not exactly helpful if you simply want to see it unenhanced.
but still, if that's the case, why isn't osx doing the same thing to the pdf.. (and also, i highly doubt the actual quality of the image is being shown in the pdf but when i view the jpg, i'm being shown an enhanced view to the point of making an out-of-focus image being an in focus image.

  • IPhoto09 Export has both a "JPEG quality" and a "Size" option

In iPhoto09 Export has both a "JPEG quality" and a "Size" option. What is the difference? iPhoto Help does not clarify. Size seeems to constrain the size of photo on screen, and it is not stretchable. 300 dpi no matter what options are selected.

Jpeg Quality is the amount of compression applied to the file.
Size is the dimensions of the shot - length by breadth - measured in pixels.
There is no dpi setting, nor any default setting for dpi. Dpi is sent when you decide the dimensions of the photo when you print.

  • Why are iPhotos previews higher quality than my exports?

I have just now noticed this after using it for so long. I was using it to de-noise  a photo I took earlier today and turned it up to 100%. I looks clean and smooth like I want, so I exported it first as a jpeg with max quality, but I noticed a lot of noise in it. So I exported it again as an original and it looks the same still. I just exported it as Current to see if there is still noise, and there is. I have exhausted the other formats as well, all export with noise.
I put iPhoto in fullscreen mode and took a screen cap of the photo via cmd+shift+4, and compared the the screen cap to both of the exports and it looks much cleaner, even though its more than half the resolution being displayed.
This is not right, plain and simple.
Here are two links, one to the original export, and the other is a screen cap.

What am I doing wrong? Are my eyes playing tricks?

I just came to my local Apple dealer to get help and they have never encountered this before. Questions they asked that made it less clear for them; they were shot in jpeg and I have exported using every setting all yielding the same results.
This sounds to be a software issue and I encourage Apple's staff to investigate it.

  • Jpeg quality on export

I am experiencing a problem with the quality of the jpegs I get when exporting from Aperture. What I want to do is export adjusted NEF files to jpeg at the highest quality but at a reduced size to fit within 950x950. I have a preset arranged and the exported file is at the correct size. The resulting file however is not as sharp as I would expect and often has indistinct but readily visible flaws (almost as though the pixels have not been perfectly put together).
The same file exported from a trial version of Lightroom 2 are pixel perfect and visibly sharper. I have been viewing both exported jpeg files in Preview. I really like Aperture and use it a great deal. I do however need to sort this problem out asap.
I would be very grateful if you have any ideas on how to resolve the matter.
    Thanks.
    Simon.

Thanks very much for your input Ian. Here are a couple of examples. Small differences to be sure (although I have seen worse than this), but visible nontheless. I would look particularly at the rendering of the sea near the rocks on the left of the picture

    Lightroom:

Thanks again, any help gratefully received.

  • Export JPEG quality must be chosen twice

Mac OS X, Lightroom 1.4.1: In Library mode, choose export, choose JPEG and quality. Then photo is opened in Photoshop and once again you have to choose jpeg quality. OK with only a few photos, but tiresome when exporting many. Is it possible only having to choose jpeg quality once (in Lightroom).

The High setting gives you the same file size as the original file was. The medium setting results is aboutg a 50% file size reduction. The max selection greatly increases the file size but I'm not sure it increase the image quality to any noticable degree.
The image I tested resulted in these file sizes sizes: Original 1.4MB, High 1.4MB, Medium 774KB, Small, 402KB and Maximum, 4.6 MB. The pixel dimension of the photo remained the same in all files.
Personally I couldn't see much difference between all of them but them my eyes are on the down side of the "hill". This website gives some interesting insight into jpeg compression: JPEG

  • Destructive Export of a Set of JPEGs?

I know I can do the following on a one photo basis:
    1. make modifications in the develop module to a JPEG (non-destructive)
    2. export the JPEG by applying the modifications and overwriting the original (destructive)
    3. delete the development history from LR
Can I do 2+3 to a set of photos rather than one-by-one?
The reason is that I want the development modifications to be visible also to other applications and I don't want
to create copies of the photos in some other place.
    Thanks.

I understand your argument but I question that this works well for a non-professional photographer.
I am not a professional photographer, and it works well for me (and most LR uses, professional or not)
I know we are talking philosophy now but I doubt that once one is happy with a photo one will go back editing it again, at least no edit which can't be done on the JPEG.
My experience is different. As I learn more about LR, I go back and make further edits to my photos. The quality loss of saving a .jpg and then doing further edits cannot be undone. Perhaps the quality loss is too small to notice for most people and most purposes, but it is there.
After I have done editing my photos I like to show them under various circumstances, e.g. to friends on my HTPC in the living. Your (LR-centric) approach would force me to duplicate all my >20,000 photos as unprocessed ones for LR and processed ones for showing. It would be a nightmare to keep them in sync.
The LR approach does not require you to duplicate your photos. LR makes wonderful slide shows. You can create the slideshow in LR, save it as a .pdf, and display it anywhere. Or simply display the photos from within LR, in which case there are no duplicates needed, and no keeping them in sync.
For RAW the situation is different. Since I shoot RAW photos I keep them and export JPEGS. But that is only since a year or so.
I am not sure what this means, but I see no difference between Raw and Jpg in the LR workflow.
In summary, LR does everything you need to do without resorting to exporting .jpgs (and wiping out the originals). I still can't imagine why anyone would pay all that money for LR and then specifically avoid using it in the most effective and efficient manner.

I made a slide of multiple pics and objects, I am trying to export it to an 8x10 photo, the shop I am using only allows jpeg.  The quality is so poor when I print it, is there a way to get better quality as I export it?  I used keynote because I could set up a custom slide size (8x10) and then added the pics and other graphics in hope I could export as a jpeg and get a good quality photo?  The photo images and slides are good quality it is the exporting where I am loosing clarity.

  • File Export JPEG Quality Maximum

I have imported a 148KB image 857x1280 at 100ppi into iphoto. When I File> Export at Maximum JPEG quality I get a 475KB image. Same dimensions, same ppi. Can someone explain why please?
    Thanks

But JPEG compression isn't just about "pixels being thrown away," and it's relative to the original. What could be happening in this case is:
Original was probably saved at a level like JPEG Medium (around 60), since that's pretty common. Data is thrown out, so quite a bit of pixels and color info are downsampled and it drops to 148KB.
Now you open it up and save it out at JPEG Maximum. You are telling it to preserve as much as it can, so it carefully makes note of all the existing data and writes it all out. But the problem is, the existing data was turned into worse data before, so all you did with JPEG Maximum is make it faithfully record a lot of garbage. The reason the file size went up is probably because JPEG cannot use many of the shortcuts it used to save the file out the last time, so even though there's a lot of lower quality data in it, it must still be recorded faithfully (taking up more space) because you set it to Maximum.
This would happen whether you were working with pictures, audio, or video. Rough example: If you take a cheap old webcam video with low resolution and chunky compression, and you add it to a full HD movie, the file size is going to be change to huge HD size, not tiny webcam size. Or if you take a low-bit MP3 and resave it as a high-bit MP3 or as a standard CD file, it is going to get bigger; the sound is no better but the file must grow.
