Setting default Office apps won't stick

I'm trying to make MS Office X the default for my appilcations, but it keeps reverting to MS Office 2004. (I'm running 10.8.6 on a Mac Pro.)
I've had "2004" on my drive for many years and "X" for 2-3 years. I've pretty much continued to use 2004 because it's working okay and I haven't had time for something to go wrong. Now I'm trying to make X the default for Word and Excel (I never use Power Point, and I don't want to mess with Entourage right now), but I can't get it to "stick."
I tried all the usual things, and then started digging around. I realized that my System Preferences showed a plugin called "RCDefaultAPP" that I must have installed at some point. I did a search ofmy drive but couldn't find anything by that name. At this site: http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/ I found this about removing the plugin: "Drag RCDefaultApp.prefPane to the trash. Any changed LaunchServices settings remain changed, though "disabled" settings will no longer be disabled." I understand the first sentence, but I have no idea what the second sentence means. So I trashed the icon from my Preferencs Pane, ran "Repair Disk Permissions" just to play it safe, and rebooted. I'm still not getting any further.
I begin by quitting any version of Word that's open. When I open the "Get Info" windwo from a Word document (or right click on a document and choose "Open With"), it shows the icon for 2004 and says "Microsoft Word (default) (090513)." Under that, as always, it says "Use this application to open all documents like this one." From there I choose "Microsoft Word (10.0.0)" and it shows the new icon. If I close the window and launch the document, it launches "X" as expected. However, if I open another document--whether or not "X" is already open--it launches "2004." I can do this manually with any document and that document will launch "X."
So, I go back into the "Get info" window and choose "Microsoft Word (10.0.0)" again. This time, however, I click the "Change All" button. As soon as I do this, the icon reverts from "X" to "2004." It just won't stick. The same is true of Excel.
I haven't messed with any other documents or apps because I'm afraid I'll just mess something up. I've looked up "discussions" in both the Apple community and MS community....I've Googled. I don't see any other discussions about this other than the steps I've just described. I don't know what else to try.
Thoughts? Help?

Launch Services can get "temperamental" at times.  For a case like you describe, if it insists of defaulting to app A when you want app B, compress app A (say as a zip file).  This basically tells Launch Services "screw you - now try to find A".
So compress your Word 2004 app.  The tell LS to use the newer Word.  Even if it doesn't stick I think LS wil find the newer Word since none other can be found for word documents.
To compress a file, right (control) click on the file in the finder to being up its contextual menu and select Compress.  A .zip file will be created.  You can then trash the uncompressed original.  But before you empty the trash double click the zip to recreate the expanded file and run it just to make sure the zip file was valid (this is a paranoid step).  If it launches ok trash the expanded file and now you can empty the trash.

  • Updated OS X Mavericks and now USB ports and MS Office apps won't work. How do I fix this?

I updated  my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) to OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and now my USB ports and MS Office apps won't work.  What do I do to fix this?

What system version were you running before you updated to 10.9.4? Another 10.9.x or something earlier?
What version of Office? 2004, 2008, or 2011?
Were you aware that Office 2004 does not run on recent versions of the system?
When you say your USB ports do not work, on what are you determining that?
Were you aware that Mavericks does not display external disk volumes by default?

  • Default paper size won't stick in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I have a Mac which prints to a usb laser, which is on the network. Since Snow Leopard the default paper size won't stick. Every time I print I have to change it from US Letter to A4. It's ok on the Mac which host the printer. Both Macs are on Snow Leopard. (I have ensured that the Region is appropriate and set the Default Paper Size in the Printer prefs.)
    Anyone any ideas?

I had a similar problem and none of the above solutions worked. However, with the help of my daughter, we figured it out (at least it worked for me).
Go to Apple Preferences/Print & Fax.
    Pick your printer.
Ensure the 'Default paper size' is correct.
Click on the 'Options & Supplies' button, then 'Driver'.
On the Fit to Page menu, choose 'Nearest Size and Scale'
All the programs now use the default paper and size.
    I hope this helps.

  • Set Default SMS App - Already Did!

Ever since updating to kitkat, I keep getting asked to "Set Default SMS App." I have - to Messages. I don't want to use Hangouts or Message  - how do I get it to stop asking me after I receive every text?

If I understand correctly you're saying you're getting prompted about setting the (default HTC) message app as the default app, but your using the Verizon Messages+ app, and want to keep it as default?
Is it occurring only when you launch messages from Extreme Power Saving mode, or from the standard phone mode too?
When you're referring to kitkat are you talking about the 4.4.3 operating system or the 4.4.2 operating system?

  • Constantly being asked to set default home app

I had downloaded a third party launcher and selected Always as the default, but every time I exit an app, it constantly posters me to select the default home app. I've tried deleting the cache and force quitting Xperia Home, but that didn't solve the problem. I then deleted the third party launcher, but am still getting asked to choose the default between Xperia Home and Xperia Simple Home. Even when I select Always for the Xperia Home launcher, I still get asked each and every time I exit an app.
    Solved!

  • Changing Open With Default App Won't Stick...

I have a couple of versions of the same app installed and I need the older version of the app to be the default app that globally opens whenever I double-click one of its files.
I've tried the Get Info -> Open With -> Select App ->Change All procedure but after clicking the Change All button, it immediately reverts back to the newer version of the application.
I need to be able to support both versions of the app. I've tried downloading RCDefaultApp but that didn't help. Moving the newer version app to another partition is not option. Re-installing the newer version of the app onto another partition is not an option either.
I would be grateful for any suggestions
    Thanks,
    Jon

The two Get Info options seem to use different methods to select the application. The 'Open with:' changes the Finder's default application property, but it looks like the 'Change All…' button uses the file type identifier to find the default application. Since the file type identifier is usually the same for all versions, the latest version is apparently the one that gets used. You should be able to select the older version on a file-by-file basis, or use the file inspector to change multiple documents. An AppleScript could also be used, perhaps a folder action to change the default application for files dropped into a folder.

  • How to set default media app

    Hi all,
How do I set the defaut media application for viewing video clips in Safari, i.e. RealPlayer, Windows Media Player or Quicktime?
I can't find anything in Safari preferences.
    Thanks

I see. Thanks for your reply.
I find that recently I'm having a lot of problems viewing media in certain sites where there were no problems before. It seemed to me that in some of the earlier browser versions you could set "helper apps"... I guess that's no longer the case.

  • Setting up allowance- app won't open!

I am trying to set up an allowance, for myself, but I can't open the app. I click on the link, it asks me to choose an application in which to open it, I pick one, and keeps asking me. I would really prefer to be able to reload my gift card from here, but I can't seem to be able to do that either. Some help would be fantastic! Thanks

  • Color profile won't stick.

Since I installed a Matrox M9125 graphics card, colour profiles set in "Color Management" won't stick. The default "Device" for "Common Management" is "Display: Generic Non--PnP Monitor - Matrox M9125PCIe x16". When I select my actual monitor (NEC 2690) from the Device drop down list profiles appear - including one I have made using an Eye-One Display 2 - and I can set it as the default one. However, when I re-open "Color Management" the profile I just set is gone, the profile list is empty and the Device is back to the Generic PnP ...display etc.
The profiles worked fine in my previous vga card (Nvidia) and stayed selected.
    I have Vista Ultimate 32Bit and CS3.
Grateful for any help on this.

    Hi,
I just want to sympathise with the China/Printer issue.
Most of my artwork goes over there and I want to rip my hair out with every new job. Steve is right that we as artists really should go by the printer's specs, but when dealing with a language barrier, not to mention a 12 hour time difference it's so far been imposssible for me to do. I keep a Pantone color picker at my desk and manually enter in the CMYK values. It doesn't always work though.
About your problem, the only thing I can think of is that you have images in your file that were RBG when placed in your file. It might not be what's going on, but something to check anyway.
    Good luck,
    Cherie

  • How do you set default programs for all users when deploying Windows 8.1?

I have my Windows 8.1 image set up the way I want including the start screen, theme, etc. But how can I set the default programs for all users. Most of out computers are non-touch and I want the desktop apps (e.g. Windows Photo Viewer), not the store apps
to be the default for opening pictures, videos, etc. Can that be done?

Great question, this has been bugging me too!
So, I did some research by using "Set Default Programs" app in Windows 8. Then I ran the super ProcMon.exe tool from Sysinternals.com <Thanks Mark!>
After filtering out the junk, I could see some *interesting* writes to the registry:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\UserChoice]
    "Hash"="57y87/ogggU="
    "ProgId"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Jpeg"
But the "Hash" part had me concerned. I did some internet searching for the hash, and came across a post and a pointer to a blog with some answers.  This is both good news and bad.
    Background:
One of the problems with Windows XP is that any program can come in and party on the entire system. No, I don't want you to put a shortcut on the desktop, install a crappy IE Toolbar, and change the default file association for *.jpg files to your app, I
just wanted to play a stupid game. Since Windows 7, Microsoft has been attempting to block that functionality from the stupid applications, and give them back to the user. Take note of the last line in the ITaskbarList3 interface:
Applications cannot programmatically pin themselves to the taskbar. That functionality is reserved strictly for the user.
Of course that sucks for us IT Pros who may wish to create *default* working environments for corporate images, but there are some tricks we can do.
    Solution:
This blog appears to have the answer:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mrmlcgn/archive/2013/02/26/windows-8-associate-a-file-type-or-protocol-with-a-specific-app-using-a-gpo-e-g-default-mail-client-for-mailto-protocol.aspx
New for Windows 8 is a dism command: /Get-DefaultAppAssociations that allows you to export a control case from a known good computer. Microsoft the supports importing the exported xml file via GPO. For example, before I changed the file association, .AVI
was pointing to the Modern App, after the change the /export-DefaultAppAssociations shows change to the new app:
    From:
    <Association Identifier=".avi" ProgId="AppXhjhjmgrfm2d7rd026az898dy2p1pcsyt" ApplicationName="Video" />
    To:
    <Association Identifier=".avi" ProgId="VLC.avi" ApplicationName="VLC media player" />
I am still doing some investigation to see if a GPO is required, or if you can inject the association into a local user account. Also, if you do have some Modern Windows 8 Touch Tablets, it would recomend keeping most of the Modern App defaults in place,
perhaps seperate GPO's for Desktops/Laptops vs Tablets?

  • Microsoft Office X- won't launch anymore

    Hi:
I have Microsoft Office X- All of a sudden my Microsoft Office Apps won't launch anymore. They report an error yet if I open a document it will launch Microsoft Word or PowerPoint just fine.
I have tried to replace the Microsoft Office X from a Super Duper back up but it also is still failing to launch.
I am guessing "launch services" is goofed up. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
    Thank you,
    Reid

I don't think it is an Intel based problem. I have a G5 iMac and a legal old MS office v.X upgrade on top of office 2001 version. Worked fine until a few weeks ago except for a few years needing to keep current with the latest XML free MS converter. Repaired disk/permissions. Dug out all of the app/preferences from my user/library. Reinstalled and it checked with MS mothership. However, still crashes on launch. I think perhaps the most recent OSX security update?

  • "Show Script menu in menu bar" setting won't stick

    Hi all,
I'm starting some Applescript development, and I'd like to make some scripts available in the Scripts menu. I checked the box to "Show Script menu in menu bar" from within the prefs for AppleScript Editor, but it doesn't work. When I close AppleScript Editor, relaunch it, and look at the prefs again, the box is unchecked. I deleted the relevant preference files from my Library and recreated them by launching AppleScript Editor, but the setting just won't stick.
    Any ideas?
    -Tim

    Taylor,
The preference that I'm looking at is within AppleScript Editor, the program I use to write new AppleScripts. Script Editor was the previous name of the same application. When I check the "Show Script menu in menu bar" in the AppleScript Editor prefs and close with window. The box is unchecked the next time I open the AppleScript Editor application, and the Script menu never appears in my menu bar. Everything works fine on my iMac at home. The problem seems to be isolated to my MBP. Weird.

  • Command line - Set default app

Can someone tell me how to change the default ftp helper application for OS 10.5 via the command line?
    Thanks!

As most probably know, there are issues with Apple's implementation of FTP via the Finder.
The company I work with delivers product by FTP and to quite a number of Mac users who, when using the Finder, come upon issues.
For ease of use, I recommend Firefox which does a nice job of FTP. But Firefox doesn't offer a way to change the default helper app for the ftp:// protocol. I know Cyberduck, MoreInternet, the old IE and Fetch do but most just want to use a browser and suggesting IE isn't good.
I'm just attempting to find a easy way to set this without telling clients to download & install a horde of apps.
