Setting Default printing as Black only

I know how to enable printing in black only using printer properties and colour ->greyscale-> in black ink only. But that setting lasts only for that session/ file being printed. If I load another file or another session the default goes back to colour. Even if I make a printing short cut that short cut gets saved but is not the default. I have solved the problem by removing the colour cartridge and the printer prints in black only even if I do not change the setting from "colour". This works but is there any other elegant solution? Regards S S Kini

Hi , I see by your post that the black only settings is only working for one session. I would like to help you.
Did you download and install the HP Deskjet F4200/F4224 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driveror are you using the preinstalled Windows drivers? I have provided a document for setting the default printer settings for a single job and for all print jobs. Most likely this is the way you have set the black only.HP Deskjet, Officejet, and Photosmart Printers and All-in-Ones - Changing Print Settings in Windows 8. If the black only isn't holding the setting in the print driver, I would suggest to uninstall and reinstall the print drivers. They might have become corrupted. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank You.

  • How to set default printing in black only

    Greetings,
I'd like to set my default printing with Firefox at black ink only, which I can do individually prior to printing a page, but it reverts to color after that printing. But if I set the size at, say, 80%, that becomes the default setting, or if I set portrait/landscape for a single printing, that becomes the default setting. Why can't the desired black-ink only setting default like the size/portrait/landscape setting? What I want to do is set the printing permanently at black only, and the size at 100%, but allow one-time printing at landscape or portrait, or sizes less than 100% without those settings becoming the default. How can I do this? Thanks for any help
    Best wishes, Tom
I've tried the help solutions on the website to no avail....

    Greeting ideato,
Thanks so much for your reply. I've clicked on the Firefox button at upper left, then Print, then Properties, then Advanced, under which is listed Printer Features (I have only 1 printer), below which is a line with Print in Grayscale, clicking on which has has 3 options: Off (apparently default), High quality Grayscale, and Black Ink Only. I click on the latter, and click on OK for this window and others in the sequence, and it'll print in black only for the present printing, but will revert to color for the next printing, 'though like I said, if I change the size to 80% or from portrait to landscape, those settings will remain. I can't figure it out. Again, thanks for any help.

  • How do I change the printer setting to print in Black only?

How can I change my printer setting to print in Black only

It depends on your printer as well; my Epson AIO only does color (even when it is black font only) - or grayscale )sort of a "draft" quality) as it uses some color even for black:

  • Setting default printer for Black and White

I have no problem setting up my printer to print black and white only using my pc, but am having difficulty setting the default for the printer on my OSX 10.5.2. I've read the posts and can't locate where this setting is done. I even removed the printer and tried readding it without any success. So, how do I set my HP Officejet to print in black and white as a default and allow me to print in color when needed?

You could use the built-in presets facility to make a b&w setting and a color setting. Then when you print, you simply select the appropriate preset. Also, the last preset that you use will be the default next time you print, so this can also help speed up your printing.
Reply if you need instructions for creating presets.
One final point. Some applications, such as MS Office, have a 'Print One Copy' printer icon in the toolbar. When you use this shortcut, the print dialog is not opened - the file simply prints. For these types of application, the preset is not used so that job will print in color if that is the default printer function. But you can change the toolbar icon function so that it opens the print dialog instead of just printing. Again, if you need instruction then please reply.

  • My f4180 prints in color eventhough I have it set to print in black only.

I have been using my F4180 for a couple of years now. I have always used HP cartridges. For some reason, it will now only print in color. I installed a new black cartridge and the printer recognizes and that there is ink in the cartridge. When I remove the color cartridge it prints in black just fine, but as soon as I reinstall the color cartridge it prints only in color. I have never changed the printer preferences to anything but black only. I have run the diagnostic and it says everything is just fine, as long as I leave the color cartridge in. Any ideas on what to do?
Another issue is that in Print Preview all I see is a blank page. It prints fine but shows absolutely nothing in print preview. That is new as well. Any ideas on that?
    Thank you.

  • How do i set up hp eprint to. print in black only

How do i set up hp eprint to pint in black only

Hi and welcome to the HP Support Community.
On an Android device, in the ePrint app, you select the document or photo you want to print.  In the Preview screen, open Settings (the document icon with a gear in the top right corner of the screen).  There among other things, you can set Color Mode to Black Only, Grayscale, or Color.
    Hope this helps.

  • Set default fax to black and white

I have been sending faxes by sending doc files to print and selecting the Officejet fax as my printer option.
Annoyingly, it keeps reverting to "send color" . I would like to set "sending black and white faxes" as the default.
How can I set the default to Black and white?
I cannot find, in the manual, any reference to setting the default.
Thanks for any insight--even a page number in the manual would be helpful.

    Hi @deepthinker,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you are trying to set default fax to black and white instead of color with your HP Officejet 5610 on Windows 8.1 (64-bit). I am happy to look into this for you!
I would recommend to open your HP Solution Center (should be a printer icon on your desktop.) Then click on Settings, then click on Printer Settings,  click on the Features tab at the top of the screen, look for the Color Options section near bottom left, and click on Print in grayscale, click the down arrow on High Quality, and select Black Ink Only.
Here is an image of what I am seeing.
If that doesn't work try the following:
Open the HP Solution Center, select Send A Fax, and then look for Black and White only.
Here is another image to illustrate.
Hope this information helps, and have a good day!

  • Group Policy - Computer Startup Scripts - Add/Set Default printer

    Good Morning.
Let's say we have 2 offices, A and B, and only 1 user.  The user is using Roaming Profiles.  Each office has its own printer.
What I am trying to do, is make a Startup script that is specific to the COMPUTER being logged into so when any user logs into that computer, they get the printer in that office defined and set as default.
I am able to do this successfully with my script but ONLY if i have the script be on the USER side of GP (i.e. in the Logon script section)
That is great that that is working however, when my user goes to Office B, they still get mapped to Office A's printer if I use that method.
So I figured I could just modify my GP and run the same script from the STARTUP section of the computer, rather than the LOGON section of the user.  It does not work.
    Here is my script:
    Set WRFCUNetwork = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")
    PrinterPath = "\\fileserver\MAINTELLER"
    PrinterDriver = "PrinterDriver"
    WRFCUNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath, PrinterDriver
    WRFCUNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\fileserver\MAINTELLER"
This is where I Have the script placed:
         Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Scripts(Startup/Shutdown)
Once i'm in there, I double click Startup, click Add, and select my script which is named:
         MainPrinterSetup.vbs
I have this GP applied to ONE OU, and that OU has ONE computer in it (my test computer)
I login with a brand new user called "testuser" (creative, huh?) and basically nothing happens
except they log in and have some Microsoft Document Image Writer printer set as default (which by the way sure does slow the PC down to the point of it almost being broke if anyone actually tries to print to that by accident)
No Main Teller Printer, no anything.
The strangest part about this is, if i apply this script to the user LOGON scripts, it works fine, the printer is there, and is set as default. (but see above why that wont work for my situation)
So obviously the script works fine, but I guess i'm missing something when it comes to applying GP's to Computers rather than Users.
Can anyone shed some light as to why the script is not running (i'm guessing the script isn't even attempting to run, rather than failing, but i have no way to know that)
    Thank you in advance!!

EDIT:  Here are the PC's info that i'm working on:
Server:  Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (where my GP's are created and managed with AD)
Target PC:  Windows XP Professional SP3
EDIT #2:  I manually navigated to the Script file after logging in and "opened" it and it added and set the default printer no problem.  the issue is definately with the script running at startup.

I wanted to clarify a few things:
    1. While it is true that printer connections are usually per user, it is definitely possible to create "global printers".  There are a number of ways to do this, but two methods that come to mind are using:
    a. "Rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry" option with the "/ga" switch.  The "/ga" switch is the key here since it allows you to deploy printers "per machine" instead of "per user".  More information
    about this is available at:
    http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterAllUsers.htm
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624057%28WS.10%29.aspx
    http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/Logon/logon_printer_computer.htm
    http://www.robvanderwoude.com/2kprintcontrol.php
    b. The Print Management console that is available in Windows 2003 R2 and higher can help you deploy printers "per machine" in addition to "per user".  More information about this is available at:
    http://www.czsolution.com/print-management/print-management/print-management-console.htm#DeployingPrintersByGroupPolicy
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753109%28WS.10%29.aspx
    2. As Guy mentioned, Group Policy Preferences can help set the default printer.  But there is another way to accomplish this.  The problem with the computer startup portion is that it runs before the user logs in.  And applying this script
in the login script section would not work per computer unless you used loopback processing.  So another way to do this is to place a script that sets the default printer into the "All Users" startup folder.  Items in the "All Users"
startup folder run for any user that logs into the computer, but it runs in the user's context.  So, this script would effectively set the default printer on a "per machine" basis.  The script method is a cruder way to approach the problem,
but it will help get the job done.  Here are some resources on setting the default printer via script:

  • Will print in black only

Status check confirms that the ink level is all good but when I try to print it says the printer is out of color ink and must print is black only. It was fine yesterday so I tried to restore but that didn't help. Rebooted computer and printer but that didn't help either.

    Hi Littlemudder,
Sorry you've had to run up and down the stairs for a week.  You might take a look in Devices and Printers and under Printing Preferences for your printer, open Advanced settings.  Open the option for grayscale and see if there is an option for Black Ink Only.  Grayscale will use more color than Black Ink Only.  That may help some if that option is available.
Once you replace the color ink you can keep the same setting and use less color ink.  You should stop receiving the message you mentioned.  The printer will still use some color ink and this helps insure the printer's ability to successfully print in color when you need it to.

  • Officejet j5780 all-in-one; print in Black only

I do not require color print capability on my j5780, I want to print in Black only (I also own a Photosmart 6380 for color needs).
A new Black cartridge has been installed and the spent tri-color cartridge has been left in-place.
PROBLEM: The printer's LED window now displays the message "Cartridge error: Cartridge on the left [i.e. tri-color] must be replaced."
Prior to replacing the Black cartridge I was able to print in Black only; now, it appears that capability has been lost. I do not want to install a new tri-color cartridge (particularly at HP's price) just to restore Black-only print capability.
QUESTION: Is it possible to reset, or otherwise over-ride, the printer's color cartridge requirement to in order to achieve Black-only printing?

    Hello DisgustedOne,
What may have happened is that while you were printing in black only, the black ink may have ran out, then the printer started using the tri-color cartridge to create black. When the tri-color cartridge ran out, you replaced the black, but are still getting an error to replace the tri-color cartridge.
Some HP printers allow for what is called backup mode, where the printer only uses one of the two cartridges, an example can be found in the following link:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01625311&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
There are a couple things you can try:
    1. Set the printer to print in black only (can be done in the printer prefs, usually under a grayscale setting)
    2. Take out the color cartridge altogether and see if it will print.
If both of those options fail, unfortunately, you will need to replace the color cartridge.
If I have helped in any way, just click the Kudos star on the left. Also, if your issue has been resolved, don't forget to select Accept as Solution

  • Print in Black only option ???

I am unable to set a "Print in Black" or "Grey Scale" option on my HP PHOTOSMART 7510e-All-In-One printer.   Can it be done.  I find no option in the settings.  Going broke, buying color cartridges.

    Hi @Jean-PaulVCT,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! I see you would like to change the print settings on your HP Photosmart 7510 so you can print in 'Black ink only' or 'Grayscale'  on your Mac running the Yosemite 10.10 Operating system. Yes, this is possible. Please follow the steps listed below:
Printing with the Black Print Cartridge Only option
Click File and then click Print.
Make sure your printer is selected.
Verify that the Preset option is set to Standard.
In the Copies & Pages menu, select Select Paper Type / Quality.
NOTE:If this option is not available, click ColorSync. Then click the down arrow beside Quartz Filter and change the setting from None to Black & White.
    Select the Paper tab.
From the Color option menu, select Grayscale.
    Select the Color Options tab.
Select the Black Print Cartridge Only option.
If that option is not listed, then it is not available. The printer will print using only the black cartridge, however, printing with one cartridge will be slower than printing with both cartridges.
NOTE:To save the setting, click the arrow next to Preset and select Save As. Save the Preset option as Black Cartridge Only and then click OK. Then, the next time you want to print with just the black cartridge, select the Black Cartridge Only Preset.    -Source
