Setting default volume level.

I have a 2nd Gen Nano which I am using in my car. I have an OEM adapter which connects to the iPod through the dock adapter and allows the car's stereo controls to operate the iPod. (The stereo thinks it's a really big CD changer.)
My problem is that the sound level from the iPod is significantly lower than that from either the radio or the actual CD changer, so when I have finished listening to the iPod I have to be careful and remember to crank the volume way down or else the radio blasts when I select a different source.
Looking at the iPod I have made sure that the volume limit is set to maximum, and I am confident that I don't have a EU crippled unit since the sound level through the earbuds is plenty loud even at half volume and keeps going up from there.
The thing is that when it first wakes up the volume level is always set to 50% on the slider. I cannot manually change the volume level when connected to the car because when it's connected to the adapter the iPod's controls don't work (besides it is mounted in a fairly inaccessible location), but I don't even know if doing so would help since it communicates with the stereo through the dock connector.
My question is: Does the iPod's volume control have any effect on the signal level out through the dock connector, and if so is there a way to permanently adjust the default volume level the unit uses when it starts up? What I'd like to do is set the default volume level on the iPod to, say, 75% or whatever will balance it with the other source input levels that the car stereo uses. I tried adjusting the volume manually and then sliding the lock switch to 'Lock' but it didn't work.
Thanks in advance.

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
So, any other suggestions?

  • Setting default volume level for Java Desktop

    Hello,
I am running Sol 10 11/06 for sparc. How do I permanently set the default volume level for the Java desktop? If I change the volume manually and "save settings" on logoff, the saved setting is not saved after a reboot, after which I have to set it again.
    Thank you......

    Annoying, isn't it?
Unfortunately the only thing you can do is lower your system volume before opening those pages. The volume could be controlled by the Web page author but most are clueless.

  • Setting individual volume levels per song

If i set my song volume levels individually through itunes. When i transfer them to my iphone will they be set at that level?
Also if the songs are already on my iphone and i change each a volume level on one particular song through itunes. When i plug in my iphone to itunes will itunes recognize that i have changed that songs volume level and correct it on my iphone?

    1. Yes. Sound Check is supposed to do as you suggest, but it mangles the sound sometimes. I avoid it for this reason.
    2. Yes. Usually the tracks for a given album are balanced well against each other. If, for example, you know a particular album is quiet, you can select all tracks in the album and boost their volume.
I'm sure iVolume works well for lots of people. My experience wasn't good. I used iVolume over two years ago and it didn't work with my protected music bought from the iTunes Store. I used iVolume's recommended setting at the time (can't remember what it was), and it made everything much more quiet than the protected music. Perhaps its algorithm or default is better now. If you use it, test it on a few tracks and then play them next to your protected tracks...

  • [Cinnamon] Default volume level

So the default volume in Cinnamon seems to be set to max (but muted), even if it was a different level in my previous session. So when I forget about this and unmute, I am slowly driving myself up the wall.
How can I change the default volume in Cinnamon?

Try changing the state of any auto-mute settings in alsamixer.  If it is enabled, disable it or vice versa.   I had a problem identical to that -- in addition, the headset was not muted.  if you plugged in a headset, it would mute the headset and unmute the speakers.
Edit: Note that this was a general issue -- not one specific to Cinnamon (which I do not use)

  • Hierarchy Viewer: Setting default zoom level and levelFetchSize

I have couple of questions on Hierarchy Viewer:
    (1) Is it possible to set the zoom level to say 50% by default when the HV is rendered first time. By default the nodes are rendered at 100%, but I would like to render them at 50% by default - and on hover show the 100%. Is this doable ? User can then decide to zoom to 100% if desired.
    (2) Is it possible to change the levelFetchSize based on zoom level ? For example if the zoom level is 100%, levelFetchSize could be 4 but at 50%, it would be increased to 8 (since more real estate is available) ?

It seems like the DVT by default zooms to fit the available real estate. But is it possible to set a fixed zoom level (say 75%) even if the node does have 100% zoom level. We would like to show the 100% zoom level only on hover to the node. But by default, wanted to to set the viewer to always show 75% or 50% zoom level.

  • Setting/Controlling volume levels

I'd like to know what you guys do for volume levels.
I have the system volume, iTunes volume, and my Bose volume knob.
Basically, rather than worry about three volumes, I set my system volume and my iTunes volume to max, then just controll the overall volume with my Bose volume pod. This seems to work great.
I don't want to spend my day worrying about 3 different volume levels:)

That sounds like a good idea. No pun intended. I don't like to set my sound set up to max, because I think it does not give you the best sound. Whenever I use source sound without amp to max (like a walkman), I notice that receiver or a sound device has noise or static to it. I like to set the source to medium and play with receiver or speakers for adjusting volume.

  • Setting uniform volume level

Is there a way in Pr Pro to set the volume of all clips to the same level aside from directly adjusting each clip's volume?

You are correct, normalize sets the peak level of the clip to whatever value you select.
This does not necessarily do what you want - a clip which is mostly fairly low level audio, with a single loud burst (eg a shot of a peaceful lake where a Mallard suddenly lets rip close to the camera) will not fit with other normalized clips taken at the same lake where there is just the usual background chatter of the waterfowl.
In the first clip the duck's shout will be set at say -6 dB, whilst the background may be at -20 dB.  In the other clips, the background will be at -6 dB as this is effectively the peak level.
What I usually do is use Audition to set the background level of each clip to the same value, and for the occasional overloud burst, selectively apply a cut in level to keep the peak within bounds.
Beware also of the "pumping" effect that you get when automatic gain control is on in the camera - after Donald's outburst there will be a clearly audible short term drop in audio level.

  • Setting default zoom level for creating bookmarks

I am creating a PDF file in a couple of steps.  The main text is created from Word, which gives me bookmarks automatically set to "Inherit Zoom."  I also create subsets of tables and figures by "combining files in Acrobat" from Windows Explorer.  That step creates bookmarks automatically that are set to "Fit Width."  I then add the pages from the tables and figures into the PDF created from the Word document.  The bookmarks come in the proper location, but the zoom level stays "Fit Width."  I'd like it to be either "Inherit Zoom" or "Fit Page."  Is there a way to set the default zoom for bookmark creation so I don't have to manually change each bookmark?

It seems like the DVT by default zooms to fit the available real estate. But is it possible to set a fixed zoom level (say 75%) even if the node does have 100% zoom level. We would like to show the 100% zoom level only on hover to the node. But by default, wanted to to set the viewer to always show 75% or 50% zoom level.

  • MOV Volume Level

When I import recordings from my Vulkano device into iTunes, the videos are 20-30% louder than all my other videos. I do know how to adjust the volume in a MOV file, so that's not my question. My question is:
Can I view somewhere the current embedded default volume level of a video so I know exactly how much I need to adjust the volume?
    For example, can I...
    1. Open an iTunes Store video and a Vulkano video in this mystery app
    2. See that according to this mystery app the iTunes video volume is set at "6" but the Vulkano video volume is set at "8"
    3. Use Quicktime (or in my case probably Subler) to adjust the volume of the Vulkano video until it is at "6" according to the mystery app
    Thanks!

    Adam -
In your System Preferences there is a panel called
'Sound.' It's typically in the second row of prefs at
the far rights, the last one I believe.
Check that your Output Volume is not slid way over to
the left. In the Output tab check that your speakers
    are balanced.
The output tab is the one controled by the buttons on my keyboard. I know that the problem has to do with iTunes because when I click on an imported song, it says "-13 DB" under volume. when I burn that song, it plays a lot quieter than the original CD on the same player in the same format.
I know this is pretty basic stuff I'm giving ya here
but sometimes it's the stuff right in front of us
    that can cause problems! : - )
Are you playing thru your computers built-in
speakers? Don't expect much volume or quality there.
If you play to external speakers, do they have volume
control knobs that you perhaps might want to adjust?
I play my music through a variety of players, all of which have sound adjustments. But when the same song is played, one burnt with iTunes and the other the original, the iTunes one sounds a ton quieter.

    Hi,
I am trying to Set/Get Volume level of Input device which has only single channel but no master channel, then it fails to retrieve the kAudioDevicePropertyPreferredChannelsForStereo and intermittently kAudioDevicePropertyVolumeScalar for each channel. But this works well for Output device.
So is there any difference in setting/getting the volume of input channels?
I am pasting the downloadable link to sample.

That works but the the game will not be in full screen, it will have an empty strip at the bottom.
I actually found out what's the problem. I traced the stageWidth and stageHeight during resizing event. I found out that when it first resized, the stage width and height were the size with the notification bar. So when I pass the stage into startling, myStarling = new Starling(Game, stage), the stage is in the wrong size. For some reason, I can only get the correct stage width and height after the third resizing event.
So now I need to restart Starling everytime a resizing event happened. It gives me the right result but I am not sure it is a good idea to do that.
And thanks a lot for your time kglad~I really appriciate your help.

  • Setting audio volume

    Hi,
I can't figure out how to set the volume level of the audio I have dragged into the opening screens. The volume is always way too loud when I put the DVD in. I want to be able to match the volume of the content to what is in the main pages and chapter screens.
    Thanks,
    Lori

You will need to change volumes in Soundtrack or other editor, DVD SP does not handle those changes...also if you encoded differently there can be volume shifts but it sounds like more than that...

  • Fat Player volume levels

Hi- I'm just wondering whether it's possible to set a volume level from source, individually for different songs in the Fat Player.
In my present arrangement, the four audio clips are for very different instrumental combinations and have different volume levels. So putting them in 4 different QT players was great because I could pre-set the volume fader on each one, for the opening volume.
I can see the advantages of the Fat player, but am wondering about this point.
    Kay.

You can't set the volume for individual tracks in the player because it is using an XSPF playlist.
In professional recording we set the output level of each track to be the same and push this to the limit using a multi band compressor.
If your recordings are from different sources with different output levels, you need to load them into an audio editing application and reset the output levels to make them all the same.
To avoid distortion, you will have to reduce the level to that of the track with the lowest one unless you have some fairly sophisticated mastering tools.
The problem with applications like GarageBand is that people can make recordings without actually knowing anything about the subject!
Recording techniques and tools have progressed a lot in the last few years. When ripping CDs and putting them on an iPod, I notice a large difference in output levels between old and new - even between new and new!
Pop and Rock are usually pushed to the limit by the over enthusiasm of "sound engineers" whose clients want loud rather than quality.
I was listening to an album by Alison Krauss recently. That's how recordings should be made and mastered! I compared this to Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits which, in technical terms, is horrendous.
Loudness, volume and level are three different things and tend to be misused.
Volume is passive and can only be cut.
Level is active and can be boosted or cut.
Loudness requires the manipulation of the individual frequencies.
You probably don't want to hear all this but a basic understanding of sound and recording techniques will help you to get better reproduction on your website.

  • Changing OSX default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences

When I change the default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences within OSX, it is back at the lower level at the next listening session the following time I use iTunes on my Mac Mini. Within System Preferences there is a section that lets you "choose a device for sound output" but the only choice I have is "line-out" and under the "port" heading there is only "built-in output"--no other choices are shown. I have external speakers attached which I like to use for listening to music as I work. What is the problem? Why won't the higher volume I set remain? Also, shouldn't more than one choice be shown for sound output?

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.

  • Setting Default Bluetooth Volume

I have a Storm 9550 from Verizon with Version 5.0.0.607 software and use a Jawbone 2 bluetooth.  Whenever the bluetooth is disconnected from the 9550, upon reconnection the volume is at the lowest possible level.  There was a setting I used previous that allow me to set the default bluetooth volume at the maximum level.  I cannot find that setting any longer, or the new software does not allow that option.  What can I do to increase the default volume on my bluetooth?
