Setting DHCP on Solaris 8

I am trying to set up a DHCP on Sunblade 100. I have D-link router that connects me to the internet with my other computers. I can't seem to let my DHCP server to give out IP addresses instead of my router. I have been working on this for the last three days. I had an issue with Unknown name but i have resolved that. I need to find a way to let my Sunblade give out IP addresses to my other computers on the LAN. by the way all three computers are connected to the D-link router.

Today we tried to migrate our Xserve from 10.3.9 to 10.4
We've chosen to start the update from a PowerBook and attached our Xserve in FireWire Target Mode.
Update/Install ran smoothly, BUT ON RESTART WE LOST CONTACT TO OUR XSERVE
    In system.log it says
HeadlessStartup: Enabling root account so we can remotely administrate.

The main ethernet port had been disabled by the installer!
We connected a powerbook (just plain ethernet cable) to the other port which was running with some old ip number and send
    ping 224.0.0.1
This gives you the ip number
then we logged in via ssh
    then
    networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled "Ethernet…" on
Now we can work through the messed up install…

  • Setting up a Solaris 10 system as a domain controller

    Hello everyone,
I would like to set up my solaris 10 box as a domain controller, so my windows systems can recognize it as such in my lab.
Any ideas on how this could be easily done?

Edit /etc/sfw/smb.conf with the needed configuration [for a domain controller.|http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=setting+up+samba+as+a+domain+controller&aq=f&oq=&aqi=] . Make sure the services are active on boot (svcadm enable network/samba and svcadm enable network/wins ).

  • WRT54G....Can I set DHCP to use the router for DNS instead of external DNS?

Hi folks. I cant' get my router to have DHCP tell my PCs that the router should be the DNS server instead of the external servers it is using. I am using Comcast Cable internet. It sets the external DNS servers for every PC that connects to it and I have problems finding my PCs on my network by NetBIOS name because the external DNS servers obviously don't store my local PCs. How can I set the router up to set DHCP to use the router for DNS?

If you cannot set the DNS server in the configuration page for the DHCP server in your router then your router does not support this.
This won't solve your problem though. The DNS server on the router is a simply forwarder. It simply forwards the DNS requests from your computer to the ISP's DNS servers. The DNS server does not accept dynamic updates to a private zone inside your LAN. And DNS is pretty much unrelated to the standard windows workgroup browsing which does the actual name resolution inside your LAN. That name resolution even works without a router inside your network. Basically all windows computers in your network periodically broadcast their name to the network. One windows computers is elected "master browser" which collects all these names and provides the name resolution service for all computers in the workgroup.
If this does not work it is most likely a windows configuration problem. It could be a software firewall on the computers which blocks traffic. It could be that the computers are not setup for file/printer sharing and thus have the computer browser disabled. It could be that your computers have a WINS server configured which does not exist. There are probably more causes. The better source to ask this question would probably a Microsoft support group. They deal with these kinds of issues more often and maybe a MVP may be able to point you into the right direction or give some links to step-by-step instructions...

  • How to set DHCP Class ID in OS X 10.2 ???

    Hi everybody,
At work we have a network that uses a specific DHCP class ID and the DHCP server does not issue IP's and stuff unless the class ID is correctly set on the client. I have been searching all over the net for the procedure to set the DHCP class ID in OS X, I know how to do it in Windows (ipconfig /setclassid) but I cannot find the OS X equivalent.
    Anybody can help?
    Thanks in advance,

  • German character set issues on Solaris

    Hi,
I am facing an issue with German character settings with my Java application on a solaris box.
When I run my application on the box, and I pass an input file with German special characters they get converted as ?. However, other normal English characters are formed properly.
When I run the same application on another Solaris box with a different JRE, the German characters are formed properly.
I understand that there is a difference in the archiecture between the 2 boxes ie.e
    64 bit SPARC machine v/s 32 bit x86 machine
    the JRE
    1.4.2_03(64bit) v/s 1.4.1_01
I am tryinbg to evaludate further differences between the 2 environments to pinpoint the issue, and get this resolved on the 1st box.
Can anyone provide me any inputs?
    Lavin

When you read the file, please point out what character set using. For example:
    FileInputStream fstream = new FileInputStream(url.getFile());
    DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(fstream);
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in, Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1")));
    br.readLine();
This link possibly can help you.

    $ export DISPLAY

Thanks.Assuming you are connecting to the solaris box from you workstation via telnet or ssh ...
Do you have an x-server (such as Exceed or xming) running on your workstation?
Did you set DISPLAY to the ip of your workstation, not the solaris server?
DISPLAY is redirecting "x" output to the specified location (your workstation), and there needs to be an x-server running at that location.

  • Forgot To Add Name Service When Setting Up Preinstalled Solaris 10

    I just got a Sun Ultra 40 M2 Workstation.
I'm using the workstation to run a Java SE application that has clients connect to a serversocket using my static IP address.
I have the system currently set up and running on my windows xp pc.
So I have all the info from my ISP and I hooked up my int to the eth conn on my sun workstation.
Then I cut on the WS and it took me through the set up.
I said no to the DCHP and entered my static IP address and my submask address and it correctly found my broadcast IP upon rebooting.
But I said NONE to name service when I should have said DNS and entered the 2 addresses I have from my ISP.
Now when I get my Java Desktop the little monitor icons show up in the lower right hand corner and when i click on it it say IDLE but has my correct IP Broadcast and sub mask.
But my browser will not pull up web sites.
I need to add the name service DNS and enter my 2 addresses.
I also have the media disks.
Do I have to reinstall or can I just add the name service somehow?
I tried clicking F2 when restarting the system but do not know enough about it to get back to the set up.
    So can anyone help me.
I think I will just reinstall in time if i can't get help but since the solaris 10 was preinstalled I think there is probably a way to go through the set up again but can not figure out how.

i added /etc/defaultrouter file with nothing but the default gateway ip in it
and just took the domain myhostname line out of the resolv.conf file leaving
    nameserver 111.222.333.444
    nameserver 222.333.444.555
also saved the nsswitch.dns to the nsswitch.conf file.
when i restarted it acted better and i was able to ping the gateway address which i could not before.
but still can not ping the static ip.
when i click on the icon it has the right ip and subnet mask listed.
    any ideas?
i am running out of google lol.
no one at comcast has ever heard of Solaris and when i call support at Sun they just said we'll call back and sent an email saying it will be $700 to say hello after i just gave them 7k lol so screw that.
geuss i'll just relax and keep googling.
    thx for the responses.

  • Setting Time in Solaris

How do I change the time in Solaris?
My Solaris server is running 12 minutes late and I'd like to change the time.
    Thanks!
    NS

    From "man date"............... :
    The command
    example# date 1234.56
sets the current time to 12:34:56.
NB Remember to be very careful setting time, key files , databases etc may well be relying on it and can react badly to sudden jumps. My advise would be to make any date changes at the single user state (see man init).

  • Setting classpath in solaris

    Hi,
I m new to solaris. I m not gettin how to set the class path in environment variables. Writing the class path every time before compilation & execution making me bore. & can I set anything like doskey(used in windows) in Solaris.
    thanks & regards
    chandu

Typically you set the path by modifying a file that is read by the command shell on startup.
Which file to modify depends on the shell that you use. On most shells you can find out the name of the shell by giving the command "echo $SHELL". Once you know the name of the command shell, check its man page by giving the command "man shellname", for example "man bash" or "man tcsh". Have a look at the section called "FILES" near the end of the manual page --- it will list files that are read at login, logout, etcetera. Then you put the command to set the path in one of the login or startup files.
There is no "doskey" for Unix because the shells are more advanced than the infamous "DOS prompt." They have the functionality provided by "doskey" built into them.

  • How to set DHCP class ID?

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect through Built-in Ethernet to my office's Inter- and intranet, using their DHCP server. But the network is set up so that only when using a certain DHCP Class ID one gets access to the correct router and thus is connected through to the internet.
For the Windows machines, they use the "ipconfig"-command that has a /setclassid option. This does not seem to work for the darwin "ipconfig". How then do I set the DHCP class ID?

  • Setting time on solaris Zone

    Hi all,
Simple question I hope. I assume it is not possible to set a different time for a solaris Zone to the global Zone. Is this the case?
    Cheers

Yes. Zones do not implement a virtual machine. There is no separate clock.
Like any other process, you can set your own timezones, but that's about it.
