Setting events in iCal?

I am trying to use iCal in 10.9 in the same manner as I did in the previous operating systems.  ICal does not work the same way.  Either the new iteration of iCal has some hidden feature that I have not yet found, or it is indeed badly designed.
My problem is in adding a new event to a calendar.  As I have in the past, I go to the date on which I want to write a new event.  In the past operating systems, iCal would then open a window on that date.  That editing window would display the proper date.  All I would have to do is type in the identification of the event and choose the applicable times.   Then I would close the window, and the event appeared as I wanted in iCal.
Now, though, in 10.9, when I am at some future date on a calendar in iCal, I click on the date, and up springs the editing window.  This time the editing window opens on today's date.  For example, I clicked on December 3, because I wanted to add an event to December 3.   ICal took me back to today's date on the calendar.  When I go into the editing window, now not only do I have to type in the identification of the event and its time, I also have to type in the date.   And then when I close the window, iCal takes me back to the date on the calendar where I wanted to be in the first place.
It is a lot easier to start at the desired date and add the event there.  This new way of starting every single event at today's date is cumbersome and error-prone.
Is iCal supposed to operate this way?  Or is there someway of getting iCal to add events directly to a date I select manually, as we always did in the past?

Now I am on the daytime computer, and now I return to my original question:  How do I get iCal to establsh a new event on the desired date on the calendar?
I find a discrepency between the instructions and the actual operation of the program.   ICal's Help Center has these instructions:
1. Click Add (+).Events are added to your default calendar. (Events added by other apps are also added to your default calendar.)
Add the event to a different calendar:
Click and hold Add (+), then choose a calendar.
Change your default calendar:
Choose Calendar > Preferences, click General, then choose a calendar from the Default Calendar menu.If you choose “Selected calendar,” the calendar highlighted in the Calendar list is the default calendar.
2. Enter a name, date, and time duration, then press Return. For example, enter “Party Feb 6,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon.” If you:
Enter an address:
The address is set as the event’s location.
Enter “breakfast” or “morning”:
The event starts at 9 a.m.
Enter “lunch “ or “noon”:
The event starts at 12 p.m.
Enter “dinner” or “night”:
The event starts at 8 p.m.
Don’t enter a time duration:
Calendar makes it a 1-hour event.
Don’t enter any time information:
Calendar makes it an all-day event.
But that is not what I see.  When I choose "New Event" or click on the "+" button, I get a small dialog box entitled "Create Quick Event."  This dialog box does not permit any editing of the date and time of the new event.  I have to press "Return."  Then I have to find today's date on the calendar, open up the new event that iCal created for today, and edit the data in that new dialog box for the correct date and time.  Only then does iCal move the new event to the correct date.
It would be much easier if iCal operated in the old, pre-Mavericks manner and allowed me to add new events to the date on the calendars where I want the new events to appear.

  • Setting default times for events in ical.

When setting an event in ICal on my Mac (Im using Lion 10.7.5) if I double click to start an event, it places an event on the day I clicked on.  Im in the month view.  When I go into the event to set the time, the default is 10 am to 6 pm and I have to reset it to an hour long event.  I do know that if I type in the time at the end of the event name, eg. Meet Mary 7 pm, the event will have an hour long duration in the calendar.  Is there a way to change the default for my first method of clicking to create a new event by double clicking in the day square for the event?  Thanks.

    Hi BumbleBBB,
The article below will explain the parameters for adding events to the Calendar:
iCal 5.x: Add events to a calendar
Enter a name, date, and time duration for the event, and then press Return. For example, you can enter “Super Bowl Party Feb 6,” “Movie with Rebecca on Friday at 7pm,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon,” and then press Return.
If you don’t enter a time duration for the event, iCal sets the event’s duration to 1 hour.
If you don’t enter any time information for the event, iCal makes the event an all-day event.
If you enter “breakfast” or “morning,” iCal sets the event to start at 9 a.m.
If you enter “lunch “ or “noon,” iCal sets the event to start at 12 p.m.
If you enter “dinner” or “night,” iCal sets the event to start at 8 p.m.
I hope this information helps ...

  • In setting up my ICal calendar I have specific times (as new events) that I want to be included in the print out.  This doesn't happen.

In setting up my ICAL calendar I have specific times (as new events) for each day.  When it prints out the time does not show up (rather its a bar).  I would like the time for each appointment to print out. How do I do this?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Set up mail app but it is sending ALL events from iCal to gmail with an error...

Previously, I had set up iCal to sync with gmail so I could have my calendar on my droid phone.  Today I tried to set up the mail app to sync with my yahoo mail account.  It works, and I can see my inbox, but for some reason when I open mail it attempts to send all of the events in iCal as alarms to Gmail.  It opens hundreds of windows and slows down my computer. Each message has an error about not having an outgoing mail server selected.  I've tried to delete my gmail from iCal to un- sync everything, but everytime I open mail it starts a domino effect of iCal alarm outgoing message windows. I can individually choose Yahoo! as the outgoing server, but it is incredibly slow and there are hundreds of them to go through...what do I do?

Have you checked the event log to see if there are any errors during the connector processing? The events will be logged in Application and Services Logs\Operations Manager. Look for any error messages during the time the connector was syncing. Most events
dealing with the ConfigMgr connector have a source of "Data Connectors" or "Lfx Service", but I would suggest looking through all of them from that time period. Let us know if you find anything there.

    Hello binbingogoABC,
Shopping on BestBuy.com should be easy and fun and not fraught with the kind of trouble that you describe. I regret very much that this has been your experience.
Using the information you provided when you signed up for Best Buy Unboxed I was able to locate your cancelled orders. I have requested more information from my back-office partners. As soon as I have additional details about your situation, I will reply again to this message. In the interim, I'm sorry that I must impose upon your patience.
I'm very grateful that you wrote to us with your concerns.

  • How to do i set or change colors for different events in iCal

When i create a new event in iCal i want to assign it a specific color just like i do in Outlook under the heading of "Categorize". how do i do that in iCal and cna i do multiple colors like i do in Outlook?

OK... got it... I use Microsoft Exchange set up by a 3rd party so i guess that is what the e-mail one is. I still use Outlook but eventually want to simplify. Right now i go back and forth between Outlook and iCal because Outlook still seems better to me. But hoping to have an open mind and find out how to use iCal more effectively. But i wonder if the local calenders are synced with the e-mail account. Is there anyway to move and/or combine the local calendars with my e-mail one so i have it all under "one roof" which means i can access all of it on my iphone, ipad, and computer and not have them appear as if thy are seperate?
    Thanks.

  • When I try to create a new event in iCal on my iPod Touch I cannot select "done" or "cancel" to save it?

However when I sync my Mac and my iPod it will show up fine on my Mac. It just drives me crazy and if I had to create more than one event in iCal I probably couldn't. Any fix to this? Thanks.

You can not add events to the birthday's calendar. To add birthday's to the birthday calendar you need to add the birthday to a contact in the Contacts app.
You can set your default calendar here:
iCal > Preferences > General  > Default Calendar and chose the calendar you want to default to.

  • Unable to add new event in iCal

OK, this may be a total newbie question, as this is only my 2nd day with a Mac, but I can't add an event in iCal.
My calendar is a Google Calendar, and I have successfully set this up in iCal (I can see all my events). However, I can't find a way to add an event! The File > New Event is greyed out, and the keyboard shortcut doesn't work either.
I'm guessing it's got something to do with how I've set things up, but I have no idea where to go from here.

Solved! Needed to check "Show All Day Events" in the View menu!

    Hello b.krushel,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
Any number of things could cause this issue, so I would recommend this article named iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999.
    These sections in particular:
    General Troubleshooting
Make sure there are no current issues listed on the System Status that affect iCloud Calendar. The System Status is located on the iCloud Support webpage.
Make sure you have fully enabled iCloud Calendar for the client you are using (for more setup and troubleshooting information on iOS, OS X, Windows and iCloud.com, see the additional details below).
Check to see if the issue you are seeing is covered in iCloud Help. To search iCloud Help, visit help.apple.com/icloud.
Check your settings and preferences as something may not be set up correctly. For example, having incorrect date and time settings can cause issues which are easily resolved by entering the appropriate settings.
Troubleshooting Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion (iCal on OS X Lion)Note: For instructions on setting up iCloud Calendar with Calendar or iCal on your Mac, see iCloud Setup. If you are having trouble with Calendar or iCal on a Mac and you are using iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure you are using OS X Lion v10.7.2 or later. Click here for help verifying the version of OS X you are using.
Make sure your computer is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com and iCloud.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events will not update in iCal. Click here for more information about troubleshooting your Internet connection.
Verify that your iCloud member name is entered into the iCloud Preference pane in System Preferences. See iCloud Setup for more information about setting up iCloud on a Mac.
Make sure you enter and update calendar information in the iCloud section of Calendar or iCal. Only calendars and events in the iCloud section of the Calendar or iCal Calendar list will be pushed to iCloud. Both Calendar and iCal for the Mac support the display of and interaction with multiple accounts and datastores, for example, iCloud, On My Mac, Exchange, Google, and so on. This makes it easy to create or modify events or calendars in a section of  Calendar or iCal that may not be updating iCloud. Learn more about moving local calendars to iCloud.
In some cases, you may find that you have data duplicated in both the local On My Mac and the iCloud sections of Calendar or iCal. Learn more about resolving this issue.
You can make the iCloud calendar your default calendar for all new events. In Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion, choose Calendar > Preferences > General, or in OS X Lion, choose iCal > Preferences > Generaland under the Default Calendar heading, select one of the Calendars under the iCloud heading. Close the Preferences window to save this change.
If recent changes simply don't appear, try forcing Calendar or iCal to refresh by selecting Refresh All from theCalendar menu.
Make sure your account was successfully created in Calendar on your Mac (or iCal). After upgrading to iCloud Calendar, you may need to quit and reopen Calendar (or iCal). To confirm your account is configured correctly in iCal:
    Open Calendar (or iCal).
    Open Calendar (or iCal) Preferences.
Click Accounts. You should see an account with your iCloud member name entered.
Turn iCloud Calendars off and back on
    Quit Calendar (or iCal).
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Remove the checkmark in the checkbox next to Calendars.
Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.
Open System Preferences and choose iCloud.
Replace the checkmark next to Calendars.
    Close System Preferences.
Open Calendar (or iCal) and test to see if the issue has been resolved.
Restart your computer. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Deleting a recurring event in iCal

Situation; iphone 5 recurring event wont delete.  looking at same calendar on a synced PC (work) the event is not there at all.
If you are having trouble deleting a recurring event in iCal try this:
on your iphone change the event "alert" or "show as" setting on one of the events in the future.  The event that wasn't showing on the PC outlook calendar magically shows up now.  delete it from the PC by opening it and choosing the X delete for all occurances (if its asks).
Now open the event in iCal and you should see the Accept Maybe Decline option at the bottom - choose decline.  you may have to do this on several dates, but that should delete the event.
    Hope this helps.

    pedfogog,
... or whoever may find this post in need of assistance as I was.
I just had this same problem and successfully deleted ALL event (past and future)instances by :
    1. Click on any instance of the event in the calendar
    2. Select "Delete" from the iCal toolbar "Edit" menu.
    3. The iCal propmt asked me to choose to delete all or just the one instance.
    4. Naturally, select to "Delete all occurrences"
    I am running OS 10.6.8   iCal 4.0.4

  • Imported events in iCal not syncing to iPhone

    Hello,
I am having trouble getting events on from iCal to appear in my iPhone.  I am using iCloud to sync events.
Here is the setup: I have a "work" calendar.  I added events to this calendar by exporting them from Outlook and importing them to iCal.  All the imported events appear in iCal and in the iCloud web interface.  However, when I sync with my iPhone, none of the imported events appear.  If I manually create an event in iCal, it appears on the phone and vice versa.
If I turn off iCloud calendars on the phone and sync using iTunes and the USB cable, all the imported events appear normally too.  So it's just wireless syncing where somehow the phone doesn't download the events that were imported.
Any suggestions?  I've tried turning iCloud off and on, deleting the calendars, and so on.
    I'm using iOs 5.1.1 and 10.8.2.

First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • Repeating Events on iCal Server?

I have set up several calendars on my server and can subscribe and update them via iCal on my computer. This is all wonderful. However, I have only recently realized that I am unable to make any events repeat. On the wiki calendar itself, there does not appear to be any way to make an event repeat. More frustrating, on iCal, even though I make the event repeat, and it shows up as repeating on iCal, only the first instance of the event shows up on the web calendar. Does anyone know a way to make this work? It is ridiculous that this is not possible.

I can confirm that it's still broken on my 10.5.2 installs. Also, all day events show up across two days and only appear if I create them on the groupcal, not in iCal.app or Sunbird. Actually to clarify, if I create all day events in iCal.app and Sunbird I can see them fine in iCal or Sunbird, just not in the groupcal.
