Setting for iTunes gone, reverted back to like 1st time I installed iTunes

Hello,
Today when I plugged my iPod into my laptop, iTunes (v.8) responded as though I had never configured it before. It asked me about file formats, etc. All my playlists are gone, all my podcasts, all my app store purchases, everything.
Looking at the directory where all my music is, everything seems intact. Any ideas on what is going on? It worked fine yesterday. I didn't install or change anything on my computer today.

Well ... I'm not sure why it did this, but it did. My music folder is on a separate partition. When iTunes reset my settings, it also reverted the music library back to the default. Going to edit -> preferences -> advanced and changing the folder location did nothing. Not even sure why it's there!
At any rate, after digging for a few hours, I finally found something. If you keep the shift key pressed while launching iTunes, it will ask you to confirm the location of your library (.itl file). I specified my other partition and voila, I'm back in business.

Where can one change the default setting for itune u (ie so that download all is default)

Where can the defaults for itunes download setting be changed? I would like it to be download all instead od download the first only. I don't want to have to open each and change it on a one by one basic. os is 10.8.4 running on a macbook pro

Okay after much research and trial I finally figured it out. When you open up the settings menu at the very top of the list of itune u courses is the default selection by checking this it then becomes the default choice. You will not see this unless you open the dropbox and go to the top and even then you might think it was just a header.

Firewall setting for iTunes connections

When trying to access my iTunes library from the AppleTV 2, I have to go to the iMac firewall and "allow connections" for iTunes. No problem there, the connection is made and I can access the library fine. Problem is as follows, after a day I must go back to the firewall and "allow connections" again. I have had to do this since I have had the AppleTV 2 (since Jan of 2011) and it is getting old! How can I keep the firewall setting to "alllow connections" for iTunes?

I use an Apple TV (1) and MacBook Pro's so not sure if this will work the same, but you could try setting the Apple TV IP number manually (so it's static) and then allowing any connection from that IP number in your Firewall ...

The video/audio display settings should set automatically for the best your TV can handle (720p AppleTV2, 1080p AppleTV3).
The download resolution for rentals or playback of purchases from the cloud is set in settings for iTunes store.
Sounds as though you have slow internet. For near instant streaming of video from iTunes store you need around:
Standard Definition     2.5 Mbps
720p HD                    6 Mbps
1080p HD                  8 Mbps
Any slower for a given quality setting and the movie has to buffer as it can't keep up in real time. This might be a few minutes if close to the rated speed or many hours, even overnight.
As pcd251s suggests you could test internet speed (speedtest.net on a computer for example). If that is fine, sometimes the LAN if on wifi can be extremely slow in certain locations - ethernet connections would troubleshoot that.
Slow internet is the common issue here. AppleTV does not have permanent storage and using it to play other content or browse trailers while a rental is buffering can reset the buffering process.   In such cases you might be better off planning in advance, renting in iTunes, letting the whole thing FULLY download and it will then be available across teh LAN to stream from computer to AppleTV under Computers>iTunes library name>Rentals.

Facetime reverted back to older version after Lion install.

I purchased Factime from App Store and after upgrading to Lion OS, it has been reverted back to Version 1.1. App store is asking me to purchase it back again to upgrade it to V 1.2. Does it mean for every bug fix and version upgrade i have to pay apple $1.03.

lol what are you talking about? The one with LION is 1.1 The one in the app store right now is 1.02 not 1.2
Anyway, you can always download the app again anytime as long as you purchased it once. (though the button said buy, but dont worry, they wont charge you again).
Though if you have Lion, it wont let you reverse back to the older version of 1.02 since you have 1.1

I own the movies and I want them to stay in my iTunes library basically forever.
But in both cases the file name no longer shows in the movie list, so I don't know how to re-download it from the Cloud.
iTunes prefs > Store > Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
This will show all your iTunes purchases in your library with a cloud icon down arrow. Click the icon to redownload or click on Play to stream without downloading.

and techncially, you don't "own" the movie, You simply have a license to use it.
Yet the first thing iTunes does when you hit the delete key is tell you that it will remove the movie forever from all devices and the library.

FYI: You should keep copies of all yoru iTnue spurahses as the labels/movie studios/copyright owners can pull their product at anytime and it won't be available to redownload.

? How to setup as new device for testing and reverting back to old backup

I need to do some testing to see if my backup may be causing poor responsiveness from my home key.
I have already done a full restore but nothing has changed. I would like to create a new device and install a few apps to see how things go. Then, I want to erase all the settings and install my old backup if there is no change. I want to ensure I will have access to my all my backups as I dont want to lose them. I have tonnes of apps.
How can I accomplish this task?

Plug in to iTunes, select your device, select restore. When it is done, say Set up as New iPod. When you are done, simply repeat the process except select Restore from Backup when it is done.

How do I sort my bookmarks to list in A to Z order? I've tried setting them but it reverts back to a unsorted list.

Best Setting for iTunes using Compressor 4

Can anyone give me a little advice. I have recently purchased a Panasonic X900 camcorder, very happy with the ease of use in FCPX using 1080/50p with surround sound. I use iTunes to play home movies to my television what would be the best compressor settings to make the most of this quality?
Also what would be the best setup to create Blu Ray Discs as previously I have used iDVD but I really want to make the best quality I can.

Hi Ian,
Try one of the Apple TV presets for your movies.
Blu-Ray is a little complicated. There is a template choice in Compressor that will encode and burn either a physical or virtual (disk image) BD. By all means try it. It's a very limited menu and options. You'll need a Blu-Ray burner and a player and, of course, media.. If you want to move up to the kind of menus and selections you can work with in DVD Studio Pro and iDVD, you probably need to look at Adobe.

Is there any way for me to revert back to Garageband 10.0.1?

I am really wishing that I had not updated to 10.0.3 and would love to get back to 10.0 or 10.0.1. As luck would have it, I don't have a Time Machine backup of it either. Anyone know if there is a link to DL the original 10.0 or 10.1 versions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this is of any help, but after upgrading i too was wishing to go back to my 10.0.1 version without a lot of headaches.Because all my months of work, my files, my software, their sounds and now all these nonstop warnings and error windows popping up with this install caused me to walk out of my studio several X's in frustration. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... what have i done!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After talking with a support guy named Michael who was very helpful, I decided not to take his advice and go to my backup (because i am not that computer confident ), rather i just restarted my Mac. Restarted my rig and,..... **** if it didn't all upload and perform just as it once did back in the 10.0.1 days. Thank you Lord, praise God for the save!

How do I get my Gmail setting for outgoing mail server back on line?

I cannot get mail from my G-mail account any more. Only "wrong password" error messages. So I changed the pass word which made no difference. The settings on both these accounts are correct and msn continues to work just fine. However I note "off line" next to my G-mail in set up mail and I have not been abe to change that to "on line" in order to get all the g-mail messages that are waiting to come through.
