Setting locale before mounting local filesystems

I have this problem when mounting an NTFS partition:
http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#locale
I have figured out that the problem is that the locale is set after mounting the partitions (it is the last reason listed on the support question above).  Is there a way I can have the locale be set before mounting those partitions?  I figured it may be in /etc/rc.sysinit but don't know much about that file, so don't want to mess it up (as I have before).
I know there is an option to set "locale=" in /etc/fstab, but I think the above solution would be better since it would work across the board with all the generated locales.

Yes, I had all the locales set, and that's not the problem.  The problem is that the filesystem is mounted prior to the locale being set during boot (as mentioned in the link I posted).
I  have set the "locale=en_US.utf-8" setting in /etc/fstab and it works, so it isn't really a big problem.  But I originally thought that I would need to set it as de_DE.utf8 to be able to read umlauts and what not, but it works with the en_US locale set under fstab.
I was trying to find a solution without having to set "locale=" in fstab, but since the English worked, I'm OK with that.

    Hi all,
    since 2-3 weeks I've had some FAIL during the boot (after having upgraded the system, I remember that there was involved an upgrade of init script probably, or something connected with the booting process).

    Ok, I still have that fail during the 'Mounting Local Filesystems'.
    If there isn't the swap partition it should be something else from my fstab..
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0

    UUID=3F9D788B3774630C /media/SanDisk ntfs defaults,nofail 0 2
    But I can't find anything that looks unusual into my /etc/fstab

  • Mounting local filesystem - FAIL (yet the fs still mounts...) [SOLVED]

    After modifying my time/date setup (setting the hardware clock to UTC, and using a custom timezone file) I started to get a [FAIL] message during boot (after the system had resynched to drive times to the system time), and shutdown.
    @ boot time
    Mounting local filesystem
            Ext3-fs: barriers not enabled
            kjournal starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
            Ext3-fs (sda4): using internal journal
            Ext3-fs (sda4): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
                                                                                                                     [FAIL]
    @ shutdown
    Unmounting Filesystem                    [FAIL]
    Nothing seems to be negatively affected, and the boot and shutdown processes continue without even pausing, and sda4 (my /home directory) certainly seems to by mounted (since I'm using it now).
    I've run fsck at boot a couple times, but the drives keep coming back clean. I've tried using my old timezone setup, but the fail message persists. I've successfully unmounted and mounted sda4 as Root, trying to generate an error message of some kind, but all I get is a successfully unmounted, or mounted, drive. I've unmounted sda4 priod to shutdown as well, but the message persists.
    The only place in the logs the [FAIL] message shows up is in /var/log/boot:
    Mounting local filesystem   [BUSY]  [FAIL]
    I'm at a loss. I would like to fix this, if only to be sure that it's not a symptom of a larger problem. At the very least, I'd like to know what is causing it.

    You interpret correctly, Logicien. BIOS is set to UTC; HARDWARECLOCK="UTC". Time and date are a-ok.
    I ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26, but the message persists. I also tried using the live cd, and mounting each of the drives in turn. All of them mounted successfully, with no error messages. To verify that it is sda4, I commented the sda4 line out in fstab, and rebooted the machine. I got:
    Mounting Local Filesystems [FAIL]
    but none of the Ext3-fs stuff, and the boot process continued successfully. I'm wondering if it's something else.
    I'll try adding quiet to the kernel boot line later this evening and see what that brings about.

  • How do I deny mounting any filesystems except my local Machintosh HD and attached XSAN volume in OSX?

    Hi
    I have a Mac attached to a XSAN filesystem that I want to deny the users mounting any filesystems except that of the local HD and Xsan.  Basically I don't want them copying sensitive content off the XSan to their USB thumb-drives or external hard drives over USB or FireWIre.
    Any suggestions would be welcomed.
    Regards,
    Chris

    Physical access trumps all software security measures. If there is something on the drive they shouldn't see, it shouldn't be connected. I suggest creating an encripted disk image on the drive to store any sensitive files. You can create alises to files or folders on the image and when you double-click them, it will automatically mount the images. If you store the password in your keychain, it should fairly transparent.

  • Netboot diskless mounts local drive in shadow place (/private/var/netboot)

    Hi!
    I'm on the way to prepare a diskless netboot in OS 10.7.2.
    Everything seems ok. I've made the image, tag it as diskless, default, and the client boots.
    When i run "mount" in the client after boot and sucessful login i get this:
    tarrero-mac:~ root# mount
    /dev/disk2s2 on / (hfs, local)
    devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
    afp_3ubSFX2uPHUn2ArKAf0wlyRV-1.2c000002 on /private/var/netboot (afpfs, nobrowse)
    /dev/disk1s6 on /private/var/netboot (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
    /dev/disk0s2 on /Volumes/Macintosh HD (hfs, local, journaled)
    map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
    map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    map -fstab on /Network/Servers (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    afp_3ubSFX2uPHUn2ArKAf0wlyRV-1.2c000006 on /Network/Servers/ichigo.dammz.com/Volumes/RAID1/Users (afpfs, nodev, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse, mounted by daniel.tarrero)
    afp_3ubSFX2uPHUn2ArKAf0wlyRV-1.2c000007 on /Volumes/Users (afpfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by daniel.tarrero)
    /dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/OS1 1 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
    /dev/disk1s4 on /Volumes/OS1-2 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
    /dev/disk1s5 on /Volumes/OS3 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, noowners)
    I have two physic drives plus one (netboot).
    disk0 is my internal drive (with "Macintosh HD" and "Recovery" partitions), and disk1 is a firewire drive (with "OS1", "OS2", "OS3" and "Data" volumes).
    disk2 (i guess) is the netboot volume.
    Please pay special attention to the two bold lines.
    From the first one (correct me if i'm wrong) i know the machine is "netboot'ing"
    The weird comes with the second bold line, where one of my local drives is getting mounted in the same path!!!
    From this great but outdated document (Troubbleshooting the netboot process), i learn that in this mount point there should be the "shadow" volume mounting, not any local drive.
    Some interesting checks looking for the proper answer in DHCP packets:
    tarrero-mac:~ root# ipconfig netbootoption shadow_mount_path
    afp://netboot100:[email protected]/NetBootClients0
    tarrero-mac:~ root# ipconfig netbootoption shadow_file_path
    NetBoot001/Shadow
    tarrero-mac:~ root# ipconfig netbootoption machine_name
    NetBoot001
    Everything seems ok.
    If i try to manually mount the shadow volume...
    Let's say, CMD+K -> afp://netboot100:[email protected]/NetBootClients0
    ... that mounts the volume propperly, with write permissions.
    In fact, there is a folder in the network shadow volume called "NetBoot001" with a file inside called "Shadow" (binary file, around 50Mb, wooow!)
    So the machine connects to the folder and creates the files needed.
    While almost all local disk mounts in the right place (/Volumes/*), there is always one partition which mounts in the Shadow drive mount path.
    In the logs before, it was the "Data" volume whithin "disk1s6".
    If i physically remove some of this local drives (let's say the firewire one, which s6 partition actually is mount in /private/var/netboot), the partition which get mounted in this place changes too! after that, it was the "Macintosh HD" (disk0s2) which get mount in this wrong place (so it's not an UUID related problem, neither fstab-like systems, i guess).
    I've also made a test in the Netboot Image. I've editted the netboot boot process in /etc/rc.netboot to force (and check if fails) the shadow mount:
    # Define: NETBOOT_SHADOW
    # Purpose:
    #   To change the behavior of the system when choosing a netboot shadow
    #   to use.
    # Values:
    #   -NETWORK-           Try to use the network for the shadow file, if
    #                       that fails, use the local drive
    #   -NETWORK_ONLY-      Only use the network, fail if not available
    #   -LOCAL-             Use the local drive for the shadow file, if that
    #                       fails, use the network
    #   -LOCAL_ONLY-        Only use the local drive for the shadow, fail if
    #                       not available
    NETBOOT_MOUNT=/var/netboot
    #NETBOOT_SHADOW=${NETBOOT_SHADOW:-NETWORK-}
    NETBOOT_SHADOW=${NETBOOT_SHADOW:-NETWORK_ONLY-}
    ... and this also work, forcing the shadow to be "Network only, if not fail", so i define my problem as:
    Regardless the shadow mount is working as expected and properly configured, some ¿random? partition from local drives get mount in it's mounting path.
    Someone knows how to fix that?
    Someone knows what problems derive from a missworking shadow volume?
    Someone points me to where can i make some more tests or debug?
    thanks and regards! and excuse that "homemade" english, i hope you to understand

    HI TArre, I came across you post these past days whilst trying to resolve the same issue. I have resolved this now by using some information similar to what you and Joel have posted and additional from other varied sources not only OSX.
    I have detailed a procedure at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6039524
    For others having the issue of not being able to DISMOUNT UNMOUNT direct attached file systems when in NetBoot Diskless mode because one is in use for /private/var/netboot part of the cause is certainly the inability of AFP to access AND be authorised for READ/WRITE of the volume/folder for Netbootclients0 (1,2,3 etc) over AFP. Any readers here , I suggest you check that first .
    Use the following osx ipconfig (yes!) commands to verify the AFP path from the net booted client.
    verify the APF netboot shadow file path its trying to use - use Terminal
    ipconfig getpacket en0
    sudo ipconfig netbootpacket
    Sadly there is not much in the way of textual diagnostics in the NETBOOT process.
    Post your results for others to see.

  • Do you have to store songs locally before they will move to the cloud?

    do you have to store songs locally before they will move to the cloud?

    I agree, though yes, the question is not clear.
    In the event you're asking if the songs have to be "local" meaning on an internal hard drive, the answer is a qualified "no."
    You can have an itunes library on an external drive, but the drive has to be active when Match is running and it will also have to stay on in order for Match to work properly after that.  You can get around this by creating a separate empty library once you have moved everything to the cloud, and populating that library with the songs in the cloud.

  • Mounting a filesystem within the zone root before booting it...

    Hi all,
    I want to mount a filesystem within the zone root before booting it. The mount works (of course...), but when I want to boot the zone (zoneadm -z stat-prod-02 boot), I've got the following error:
    zoneadm: zone 'stat-prod-02': These file-systems are mounted on subdirectories of /zones/stat-prod-02/zone/root:
    zoneadm: zone 'stat-prod-02': /zones/stat-prod-02/zone/root/sas
    zoneadm: zone 'stat-prod-02': call to zoneadmd failed
    So, my question is: is it possible to mount a filesystem within the zone root before booting it ? If yes, what am I missing ?
    Regards,
    Jeff

    I certainly see what he's trying to achieve -- an easy transition for admins who are not experienced with zones.
    If I tell an admin that everything under /zoneroots/foobar/root is part of the server "foobar"'s root directory, that's a pretty easy concept. That admin can go onto the global zone, create a new logical volume and mount it as (for example) /zoneroots/foorbar/root/dba93 (updating the global zone's /etc/vfstab) using all their "regular" skills. Unfortunately this works for the moment, but now the zone is unbootable (unbeknownst to the poor admin...).
    If I tell the same admin they have to create the logical volume like normal, but then they have to go into this unfamiliar "zoneadm" command and start typing in these new commands, they suddenly are a lot less interested in doing the work (meaning it gets push to the "guy who knows zones"). Not only does this place a burden on the person who knows zones best, it slows their adoption because the admin team isn't supportive of them.
    I too don't see why the zone cares that something is mounted as a sub-dir of it's root -- it's not a directory that the zone configuration is going to try and mount (THAT would be a problem and a suitable reason to abort). Tracing into this I see that the "zone_create" system call is returning with "EBUSY" which just seems wrong...

  • Setting getViewRoot().setLocale(new Locale("zh","CN")) didn't work

    Hi guys,
    I tried to set the viewRoot locale to zh_CN specifically like below:
    FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getViewRoot().setLocale(new Locale("zh","CN"))but the page still displaying english instead of chinese.
    Do I really need to set the <f:view > in the jsp page like below:
    <f:view locale="#{sessionScope.currentLocale}">I thought JSF will automatically get the locale which I set specifically?

    I specify as follows:
    <locale-config>
    <default-locale>en</default-locale>
    <supported-locale>en</supported-locale>
    <supported-locale>es</supported-locale>

  • Mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

    I recently did a pacman -Syu with some consequences.  I still had grub1 running and it was automatically upgraded to grub2, which is fine, but apparently grub-install was run on the mbr (I really think that was very inappropriate as that did break my system).  Anyhow, on to chroot, I update /etc/default/grub as I have an LVM on top of an encrypted root and add this:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda5:VGarch"
    and this to mkinitcpio.conf:
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect fsck modconf block encrypt lvm2 filesystems"
    then update both:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.conf
    and then update again for good measure while we're still in the chroot.  However, upon reboot I get the ominous error message:
    mount: unknown filesystem type ‘LVM2_member’
    EDIT: i moved fsck behind filesystems in hooks with no effect

    Post the entire kernel command line you are using (/proc/cmdline).
    Note that the upgrade to grub2 will not have automatically installed grub to disk. So if you have not installed grub to disk, you need to do that in order to configure it correctly.
    i.e. grub-install was *not* run on the mbr as part of the package upgrade.
    See /var/lib/pacman/local/grub-2.00.5043-2/install.
    But your config file for the old grub will have been moved to a .pacsave when that package was removed by pacman.

    Ran a routine weekly update on an arch box this morning, didn't think anything of it as usual. Until Thunar started spitting errors at me whenever I tried to mount a USB device. gvfs makes the devices appear in the left pane for one-click mounting... usually.
    A partition on the hard drive attached has started telling me I don't have permissions to mount it any more - never had issues before, I'm in storage so I don't see why.
    The other issue comes with a USB hard drive, and when trying to mount it as above, Thunar throws this at me:
    Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /run/media/pip/HD-PVU2: Command-line `mount -t "vfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid-100,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec" "/dev/sdb1" "/run/media/pip/HD-PVU2"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'
    Searching both pacman and AUR gave me no packages to do with vfat filesystems, and the wiki article "USB Storage Devices" provided no solutions at all.
    Using XFCE4 DE on 32-bit Arch. All packages have been updated to latest versions as of the time of this post.

    I probably experience the same kind of problem as you guys. I'm using udisksvm to mount USB drives and when I plug one, I get something like that:
    $ udisksvm
    Automounting for non optical devices enabled
    Added object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/Intenso_Basic_10011100031138
    Added object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb
    Added object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb1
    Automounting /dev/sdb1...
    Mounting failed with error:
    GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Error.NotAuthorizedCanObtain: Not authorized to perform operation
    traydvm for /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb1 now running with pid : 2694
    /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gi/types.py:47: Warning: g_variant_unref: assertion `value->ref_count > 0' failed
    return info.invoke(*args, **kwargs)
    $ udisksvm
    Automounting for non optical devices enabled
    Added object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/Nokia_S60_359557013658840
    Added object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb
    Added interface on object : /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb
    Automounting /dev/sdb...
    Mounting failed with error:
    GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Error.NotAuthorizedCanObtain: Not authorized to perform operation
    traydvm for /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb now running with pid : 3025
    /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gi/types.py:47: Warning: g_variant_unref: assertion `value->ref_count > 0' failed
    return info.invoke(*args, **kwargs)
    And the device is not mounted automatically. I have the packages dosfstools, ntfs-3g, systemd-sysvcompat installed (I use systemd). Mounting manually from console works well.

  • [SOLVED] mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext2'

    I probably have the most complicated first-time arch setup that you'll ever hear a n00b post.  XD
    I just finished setting up an encrypted arch box with a usb boot drive (it contains the key-file), but when I go to boot, the system reports the following:
    mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext2'
    Of all the things to break!  Ext2???!
    This is for the default boot mode, when boot into the fallback initramfs mode, the arch box boots up fine (although it takes 2 whole minutes).  I think that the issue is that I'm missing a module in my mkinitcpio.conf file.
    /etc/fstab file:
    UUID=1245ASDF / btrfs discard,autodefrag,compress=lzo,rw,relatime,ssd,space_cache 0 0
    UUID=2245ASDF /boot ext2 rw,noatime 0 2
    UUID=3245ASDF none swap defaults 0 0
    /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file:
    HOOKS="base btrfs udev autodetect modconf block encrypt lvm2 filesystems keyboard fsck"
    /etc/default/grub file:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda:enc cryptkey=/dev/sdb2:ext2:/keyfile crypto=sha512:twofish-xts-plain64:512:0:"

    Wow, there was literally a note about the exact issue I was having on the wiki...
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio#MODULES
    Note: If using reiser4, it must be added to the modules list. Additionally, if you will be needing any file system during the boot process that is not live when you run mkinitcpio — for example, if your LUKS encryption key file is on an ext2 file system but no ext2 file systems are mounted when you run mkinitcpio — that file system module must also be added to the MODULES list. See Dm-crypt/System configuration#cryptkey for more details.
    PS: How do I mark an issue as solved?

  • Cannot mount cifs filesystems [solved]

    I have a usb drive plugged into my router that I have set up to mount via autofs.  However, it is failing because for some reason my system suddenly cannot recognize cifs filesystems.  cifs-utils is installed and the latest version
    mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system

    BAH...
    I could have SWORN I had rebooted already after doing an update, apparently I was mistaken.

  • Practical usage / difference - local vs server (local / network) accounts

    I have purchased a book on Mountain Lion Server, looked on the Apple support community and the Internet but I cannot find a clear answer, or explanation, to my query.
    Instead of looking at the features in Mountain Lion (ML) Server and Open Directory (OD) I'd like to approach this in terms of the functionality I would like to achieve. I am sure that many other people have had, will have, the same sort of questions.
    Some background: I have an all Apple home network — few Mac machines (iMac, MacBook), iPad, iPhone & Airport Extreme. I recently purchased a Mac mini running ML which I have setup as a server. The installation went OK and the DNS setup is fine.
    This is my question / requirement / clarification needed.
    As I understand it there are three types of user accounts in OS X + OS X Server with OD:
    Computer (standalone) Local — basically the account you would have on a Mac if you had only the one machine. Using (as I believe) a local 'Open Directory' (?) database.
    Server 'Local User' — an account on the server using a local OD database on that specific server.
    Server 'Local Network User' — an account on the server using a networked OD database on the server.
    Below is what do I want to do — this is the functionality I want / don't want. I am aware that some of this functionality may, or may not, be available on OS X + Server + OD. Also I am looking at this from the perspective of a systems administrator of Windows + Active Directory sites — not saying that Windows & AD is better, but that that is my experience & frame of reference.
    Access to shared common services — DHCP, DNS, Files, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Messages, Time Machine backup, VPN. That is all the goodies I expected to get with a dedicated Mac mini OS X server machine.
    To have access to those services within the home LAN and, as relevant (Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages) via the Internet. If via the Internet then securely via use of certificates.
    Each user (currently) has their own machine with their (Unix style) home folder & files on that machine (the MacBook may have more than one account on it) and is logging locally onto their specific machines.
    I do NOT want to have the user's (Unix style) home folder (and all folders within) to be on the server.
    Users must be able to log onto their machines (i.e. MacBook) when outside the LAN and be able to access their local machine files.
    Now we come to the question of which type of OS X + OS X Server (OD) account do I use for people — keep the local machine account? Use server account? If so then which — server 'Local User' or 'Local Network User'. Of course this can be framed as which OD a user authenticates against and what are the ramifications of each method.
    Also relevant is the point that I don't believe OS X Server + OD supports the same concept of Windows called 'cached credentials'. Which means that I couldn't have, for example, files on a computer (MacBook) which have an ACL referencing a server user account GUID because they could not be accessed if the user account was not able to authenticate (outside the LAN) with the OD server.
    Anyway to the questions — to achieve all, most of, the five functionality points in the list should I use (and why if someone could explain rationale):
    Combination of computer (standalone) Local + server 'Local User' accounts? Obviously as users will be accessing resources on the server it cannot be just Computer (standalone) Local accounts.
    Combination of computer Local + server 'Local Network User' accounts?
    Just server 'Local Network User' accounts
    I am suspecting that it will be option 1, combination of computer (standalone) Local + server 'Local User' accounts. If this option is used would there be a problem if the two accounts have the same username?
    Thanks for any help, advice, and/or instruction. Also if anyone has links to further information that would be much appreciated.

    Most services (calendar, contacts, vpn) require that your users authenticate via Open Directory.
    Your admin account can be local, but put your users in Local-Network (in 10.8 terms)

    Hello brjdunn,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    You are able to change your Apple ID by following the instructions below.  That way you will still have access to all of your previous purchases:
