Setting mail server to check other (remote) POP accounts

Can someone tell me what technique is used to configure Mac OS X (Tiger) Server to retrieve mail from other POP servers? I am wanting to use an internal mail server at my organisation for main mail handling (most large emails are between people within the building) and have it automatically retrieve emails from various ISP mail servers.
This way, users appear to have a very fast connection to the mail server, and if it ever goes down they can still connect to the ISP's server and still be able to retrieve new messages.
Also useful for collecting a desparate collection of email accounts into one, and have the mail filters act on it.
I've come across etrn & uucp, but they don't sound like this is what they were designed for.
thanks,
Ray.

Thanks Jeff. Just the one word was required to send me off in the right direction. I had encountered sendmail, but couldn't recall it to get a man page on it.
One other question (couldn't find mention of it in discussions): I have played with it and got it working for my account by running it manually (and as a daemon under my user).
But the question is how do I get it to launch at startup? Do I put a .plist in the /Library/LaunchDaemons? And if started this way, will it automatically notice all the ~/.fetchmailrc files and process everyone's mail?
Thanks for your help.

A strange little bug is happening with me. Every time I reboot my mac and startup mail, one of my POP accounts fails to connect giving the warning message that my mail server doesn't support A-POP.
After quitting and restarting mail about 5 times it finally kicks in and connects up.

• Mail crashes when trying to access pop accounts

Help!
Since I updated to OS 10.4.8, mail has stopped working properly. Whenever I try to get mail from my pop accounts, it crashes immediately. As long as I stay offline, the program seems to work.
I tried deleting my accounts and re-entering them, but that didn't have any effect. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You're welcome.
There is probably some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. The following procedure thoroughly gets rid of all those files, so that Mail creates them anew:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash. This file stores information about what does and doesn't constitute junk, and is what allows the junk filter to learn. Clicking the Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail also deletes LSMMap2. The file was called just LSMMap in early versions of Mail, delete that as well if you see it.
4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
5. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. This is where Mail 2.x stores all rules, including those used by the junk filter. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox folders there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Messages in Junk folders with an .mbox suffix are stored locally and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there that you want to preserve, either move the messages to another mailbox in Mail first, or move the Junk.mbox folder to the Desktop (to be imported back later) instead of to the Trash. Junk folders with an .imapmbox suffix aren't a concern because they are stored on the server and Mail will rebuild them automatically.
8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don't have any rules you'd like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just delete the MessageRules.plist files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

What is incoming and outgoing mail server on adding a new emial account???

The servers your email provider uses to route incoming and outgoing messages to and from email accounts.  If you are trying to set up and email account on your phone you need to get the required information for these settings from your email provider.

• Newie Mail server and running other services

We have a small office network of 6 macs that connect to a Panther server, this server provides DNS and file sharing and thats about it a Filemaker Sever and Retrospect Server. I doesn't suffer from heavy use
I have been using a a separate mac to run Quickmail server 1 (os9) and I need to upgrade it as some of the mail protocols are out of date.
We have a static IP address assigned to our mail gateway by our service provider.
My question or advice
Should I just start using OS X server to run mail services
or
Upgrade Quickmail and continue running it separately on a new mac mini (or similar)
My concerns are at the moment any problem with email locally can be solved pretty much without effecting the other server or the network.
Thanks

The basic setup is prety simple...
Replace following with your own equivalents...
Domain name: woopee.com (the domain name after the "@" in your emails)
Host name: mail.woopee.com (the hostname your MX record points to. Does not need to match server hostname. This will be the hostname mail server uses when communicating with other servers)
Local Host Aliases: woopee.com (a list of the domains you want to accept mail for. Probably just same as Domain name?)
Local network: 192.168.10.0/24 (LAN IP range for local users. Used to bypass authentication when they send mail out)
Server Admin-> Mail-> General...
Tick:Enable POP
Tick:Enable IMAP
Tick:Enable SMTP, Allow incoming mail, Enter Domain name & Host name (from above).
Mail-> Relay
Tick: Accept SMTP relays... Enter localhost IP: 127.0.0.1/32 and Local network (from above).
Tick: Use these junk mail rejection servers. Add: zen.spamhaus.org
Mail->Filters
Tick: scan for junk mail. Minimum score: 5 (can be reduced later)
Junk mail should be: Delivered (will just tag and forward to recipient)
Tick: Attach subject tag: * Junkmail *
Tick: Scan email for viruses
Infected messages should be: Deleted
Tick: update junk mail & virus database: 1 time per day
Mail->Advanced->Security
SMTP: none (this prevents smtp authentication from anyone outside your Local network)
IMAP: Tick: Clear, Plain, Cram-md5 (or leave all unticked if only using pop accounts)
POP: Tick: APOP
Mail->Advanced->Hosting
Local Host Aliases: Add: localhost & woopee.com (separate entries, see Local host aliases, above)
That's it (I think ...although I cannot guarantee I have not missed something). There will be no problem setting this up and seeing it going whilst still using the existing mail server. Set up client accounts to send and receive from new server and you can send mail around internally to test. Last thing would be to change your firewall port-forwarding for SMTP from existing server to new one.
Watch the mail.log in Console for any errors & do plenty tests.
Ensure users have mail enabled in Workgroup Manager.
There are plenty mods available beyond this. Have a good read through the mail services manual (I know its a bit confusing at times) and you should see where the above settings fit in.
Lots of stuff on the forum here which you can search for. Spam filtering in particular can be made far more effective but requires editing of the underlying unix configuration files - again, plenty of previous discussions about that on forum. Meantime, the zen.spamhaus.org RBL will filter out a great many spammers.

• Changing Mail Server Settings for Other IMAP

Hello,
I'm an Admin for a treatment center and one of our psychiatrists has a BB Tour. He asked me the other day if I could set up his email account on our exchange server for him on his phone. Going through the mail setup wizard I selected "Other" account and set it up for IMAP and then it asked me for his email address and password. It took the domain name and then assumed the mail server names were as such. Now in a perfect world, this wouldnt be an issue. I recently took over for a complete moron and this guy has our MX records pointing to a 3rd party company where all of our outside emails go and then the Outlook clients are set up to pop this box in addition to the Exchange setup (I know its totally lame). What Ive done for everyone else is just setup a IMAP account using the server IP address and mail works fine for them. I cannot for the life of me find where I can actually edit the mail server names for the IMAP account I create on his BB Tour. Is this a limitation the phone? Or am I not looking in the right place. Thanks!
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Yup -- refer back to my first reply where I said to use the carrier BIS website...while I didn't say it quite so clearly, I did not say to use the on-device email setup wizards.
The device interface to BIS (aka email setup wizards) and the carrier website interface to BIS have subtle differences. For what you need to do, you need to use the carrier website from a PC/browser. Here is the link:
https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw
If you have not yet created BIS credentials, you will need to. I find it easier to first create those on the device interface and then use them in the web interface. Afterwards, you will have to use the credentials in the device interface, but there is a "remember me" box so you will only have to enter them once.
Personally, I rarely use the device interface...a full keyboard, mouse, and monitor are so much simpler for doing things than a tiny BB screen/keyboard. But that's just me.
Good luck!

• Can I set my iCloud email as the outgoing mail server for my google apps email account in Mac Mail?

I have a google apps email account from an old client, all my work emails have been going to it for years. As I'm no longer affiliated with this client I'd like to make a transition to using my iCloud account for work. I asked people to use my iCloud address but as they've been using my google apps address for years it's what automatically comes up when they type my name.
I figure the easiest way to make a transition is if I reply to all the emails that arrive at my old address from my iCloud address and gradually they will start using my new address without realising it. But I can't find a simple way to do this.
In Mac Mail preferences > accounts > Google IMAP (my old account name) > Account information > Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) I'd like to set my iCloud SMTP server. But although my iCloud account uses its own outgoing mail server for its own account , it is not in the server list when I select my google account. I've tried to add it to the server list as smtp.mail.me.com but it caused my whole iCloud account to give me error messages until I force quit Mail...
Any ideas?

In iCloud/Mail, have you tried going to Preferences (select with gear at lower left)/Composing and setting a Send from address there?

• Setting mail server

Hello,
I would like to test internal mail service with Snow Leopard Server (before trying a service accessible from the web).
I have a dynamic IP from my ISP and I use a DYNDNS xxxx.dyndns.org to access my server from the web (but maybe it is useless for what I want to do).
1/ The DNS is configured most simply this way :
0.168.192.in-addr.arpa.     zone inverse          -
         192.168.0.10               mappage inverse   server.internal.
server.internal.                 zone principale                         -
         server                        machine               192.168.0.10
MX mail exchange :          server.internal.                                        5
external DNS requests are sent to 192.168.0.1 (modem/router)
Is it the right way to configure the DNS ? I have no problem to access internal or external addresses.
2/ The Mail service is configured and activated :
Domain name = server.internal.
Host name = server.internal
Activate SMTP, with Kerberos authentication, no SSL
Transit outgoing mail through host : <my ISP SMTP>
Activate IMAP and POP, with Kerberos authentication, no SSL
3/ I have a user 'test' and I activated the mail.
I declared server.internal as mail server, with POP and IMAP access.
4/ I created an IMAP mail account within mail.app :
Receiving server = server.internal, port 143, no SSL, Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)
SMTP = server.internal, default ports, no SSL, Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)
For both, username = test and password is the account password
Of course, it does not work : mail cannot connect to the IMAP and to the SMTP server.
But why ?
My network background is light and all I could read about DNS did not help me.
Thanks for your help.
Eric

SAlut Rikki49,

• Mail will not download from Earthlink POP account

Have two accounts set up in Mail: one is IMAP me.com account; the other is POP Earthlink account. Suddenly, today, Mail on my MBPro will not download messages from the Earthlink POP account. It asked for my password (oddly, because it is in keychain) & then would no longer download mail. Messages download to my iPhone just fine from both accounts. Have checked connection doctor (all ok), deleted messages after last download using webmail in case of malformed email, & fixed file permissions. No luck so far. Suggestions, please?

UPDATE: I deleted the me.com account and added it back in & Mail seems to be working fine again. For some reason, I have a lot of duplicate messages in the Earthlink In box now, though. Still curious as to what caused this to begin with. Is it something about the me.com account? It seemed like Mail quit downloading messages after it checked the me.com account.

• Mail app not seeing outgoing mail server : it's there in the account info!?

I just set up 2 new accounts in mail all setting are ok and email is being received OK by both accounts.
Accounts are named John@blah and enquiries@same blah
But one of them (john) is not sending and I'm getting this:

Where I'm told to choose a different outgoignmail server. Problem is that in accounts setting the server is named correctly but this drop doen panel doesn't give me the option to use it.
I need some help please

I know that's what you'd think but it is not the case as it's already there, look:

Could it be the server port. the 2 accounts that send ok use 25 and the one that isn't working, ie the one where I am unable to select the correctct outgoing server uses port 587.
I have no idea if this would effect mailapps ability to read what is in mail>preference>accounts I can't see how that would be a problem

It was a known issue at the time of launch. There was a recent over-the-air update that addressed at least one Exchange sync issue (now allows http:// in addition to https:// access), but I have not read about whether it resolves the IP Address issue.

• Mail fails to receive or send pop account

MAIL has just stopped receiving or sending in my POP account. My diagnostics show all  "green" dots, can any one assist  (in simple  language please !! ), thank you.

Hi Paul    I did contact my ORANGE provider support ...spent about half hour (or more)  they could not find any thing .. all my settings were ok !!! but still no send or receive, they suggestted to get messages to go to the web site & sign in there.
I then found that I had  about 150000 messages  so deleted those & then went back to MAIL & all seemed Ok  !!!!

• Setting mail with Cox (or other services with different servers for pop and smtp)

My Cox mail account uses different servers for pop and smtp (my personal ISP 1&1 does too).
The mail applet on my Blackberry Curve 8330 with Verizon does not allow to define different servers for pop and smtp, and further, for SSL smtp mail, the port is fixed at 995 and cannot be changed, while Cox (and 1&1) want to use 587 or something like that.
As a result, I can only receive mail with these services.
I also have yahoo mail, which works fine, so I can send mail with it and it is not a life-and-death situation, but I would like to be able to just reply to email sent to my Cox address.
I called Verizon and they said BlackBerry provides the mail access through their servers and the applet, so there is nothing they can do.
Is there a way to set it such that I can not only receive but also send mail through either of these services?
Thanks in advance,
Didier
PS: Other than that, the Curve on Verizon rocks!!! so much better down here than AT&T it's not even funny.

OK, thank you for the input.
The problem I have with this solution is like the one I have now using yahoo.
There are 2 problems:
1) mailing lists want the mail to come from the account that is subscribed, so if the cox account is subscribed, I can't contribute from the blackberry, and if the blackberry account is subscribed, I don't get my mail in Outlook. Neither is good for me.
2) people who send me mail to the Cox account and get replies from me from the blackberry continue responding to the account that can send from the blackberry (not Cox), and from that point on I do not have that mail on the computer.
The issue of having two copies is no big deal, I just delete the mail I do not need. I would rather have two than none.
Really, Blackberry should modify the email service so that they directly support mail systems like those of Cox and 1&1. I am sure there are others. They should also allow the use of another port for SSL than 995. I have not seen anyone using 995 for SSL.
Until recently, I had a BB provided by my employer, and we had a BES, and that worked really well. I would like to emulate as much of that functionality as possible without having to pay somebody another $10 or $20 a month just for the priviledge of having an account on a private BES server.
Anyway, thanks for the exchange and suggestions.
