Setting movie aspect ratio in iMovie 10.0.4

Im trying to set a specific aspect ratio of my new movie, but I cant find any way to do that. I see help docs that say you can choose the movie format when you create the project but the latest version of iMovie 10.0.4 seems not to offer that feature any more. Nor can I edit the movie format at all anywhere as far as I can see. When I export the movie I have only a very limited set of options all with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Is this feature no longer supported?

It is possible to change the aspect ratio and it doesn't need to be in widescreen. I found out how based on another forum. Here is the answer on how to do it:
1) Select a clip in the timeline.
2) Select the "Adjust" button at the top of the window.
3) Select the "Cropping" adjustment (the two right angles that form a square)
4) Select "Fit"

I do find it annoying that when you drag a clip to the editor that it automatically changes the aspect ratio and you have to change it back.

  • Set the aspect ratio

    Hello,
    I have an old iBook G4 (aspect ratio 4:3) hooked up to a TV screen (aspect ratio 16:9). This means the TV always gets the 4:3 output and is incredibly annoying.
    Using the open source MPlayer I am able to set the aspect ratio of movie files to 16:9, meaning they are distorted when viewing on the iBook screen but appear correctly on the TV screen.
    However, MPlayer is not as good a player as QT and tends to corrupt the rendering... is it possible to set the aspect ratio of a movie in QT? This could also be solved if it were possible to set the aspect ratio of the entire display on the iBook when the video-out cable is plugged in.

    no resolution... doesn't seem possible.

  • How to set viewer aspect ratio to 1920 x 1080

    I opened a new project, imported a 1920 x 1080 .Mov file and placed it on the time line. However, the viewer window, set to "Fit" is in a 4 x 5 std format and I cant see how to change to a 16 x 9 format.
    Thanks for your help

    I closed the project, opened and then set the aspect ratio in the settings dialog. I thought that this could be set after opening the project.
    However, this time, after dropping the .Mov onto the time line, I have sound, but the audio sound track is empty. I need to see the audio waveform. The viewer is now in the correct format, 1920 x 1080.
    In the project that I had the viewer in a 4 x 5 format, the audio tracks showed sound

  • Setting the aspect ratio of an image

    Hi
    Is it possible to specify the aspect ratio of an image? I have a bunch of video shots in my library and they all have non-square pixels so would like to "set" their aspect ratio.
    Thanks upfront!

    If you are using an analog camera, you can set the aspect ratio in MAX. This will correct for non-square pixels.
    If you are using a digital camera, I don't think there is a way to fix it during acquisition. You could resample the image to correct the ratios, but that would be a slow, time consuming process.
    One other possibility is that your computer monitor is in a mode which is not a standard 4x3 configuration. For example 640x480 and 800x600 are 4:3 ratios. 1200x1024 is not, which tends to distort your displayed images.

  • Mobile display UI design, set grid aspect ratio/size

    Hi, is there a way to set the aspect ratio of the grid I am working on to the dimensions of my phone's display, so I can design with that display size in mind?
    Thanks and cheers,
    c

    Thanks Shane. Tried that on my set, was able to set to normal when viewing off-air picture, but when switching inputs to te dvd player the side bars are gone. Fiddled with the dvd player settings, set it for 4:3 output and I get a letterbox frame but at least the graphics are on screen. Looks like the stretch setting you spoke of.
    Regarding Final Cut settings, in capture preset the setting DV NTSC 48 has a default of 3:2 aspect ratio. I see I can edit and change it to NTSC 4:3. Do you think it should be 4:3?

  • Setting camera aspect ratio...

    hey Guys,
    I'm trying to get our video to be widescreen, but I'm not sure how to do that ( I'm using the 10.1 swc).
    In the code for the stream manager, I see methods like set aspectRatio, but then I also see things like AR_LANDSCAPE.
    Then in the documentation I only see a method like, "changeSizeStream()"
    What's the correct way to set the aspect ratio and height/width of the encoded video stream?
    thanks

    Camera RAW does support 1:1 aspect ration.  You just have to right click when using the crop tool to bring up the contextual menu, and select "Custom."  Then type in your ratio.

  • Is there a way to set the aspect ratio or file type in the camera for video settings?

    I always convert my .MOV videos to WMV so I can upload to my web site.  However, with my new iPhone (iOS7), the vidoes are distorted due to aspect ratio issues.  I'd like to set the output aspect ratio and.or file type when I create a new video on my iPhone 5s.

    There is no user setting for this in the native iOS app. It is possible that if you use some other 3rd party app you can make some changes to that, but I'm not sure. There are also no settings for changing the file type on the phone itself.
    I've not experienced any issues with distortion on mine, but it could be your converter. Have you tried another one?

  • Mpeg4 Movies Aspect Ratio Problems

    Hi everyone,
    I'm a fairly new Mac user (since March 07) and this is my first post on the forums.
    I recently upgraded to Leopard and after transferring all my mpeg4 movies back, which I originally encoded using VisualHub, playing them in Quicktime (even Finder) has stretched all the video aspect ratios (way too wide).
    However, when I play the same videos using VLC, the aspect ratio is correct.
    Is there a setting in Quicktime/Leopard that affects aspect ratio correction/playback?
    Thanks for any help!

    Is there a setting in Quicktime/Leopard that affects aspect ratio correction/playback?
    Are you referring to "player" or "Full Screen" playback here?
    AFAIK, the latest update still does not have such an independent a setting for "player" viewing and the only way to do this is by changing the "display" size in the "Properties" window. Basically. if the encoded, original, and current size stats in the "Inspector" window are all the same, you movie should be playing at the correct aspect ratio to which it was encoded.
    On the other hand, if you are viewing in the "full screen" mode with "Size" preference set to "Fill" rather than the default "fit," then playback will be "distorted" to fill your entire monitor no matter what its size and shape.

  • IPhoto slideshow has wrong aspect ratio for iMovie and/or FCP

    When I output a slideshow at 720x480 from iPhoto then import it into iMovie or FCP, the images are stretched vertically. I can adjust the ratio in FCP (-10 seems to be a good number), but there is no fix for iMovie. I like the iPhoto slideshow capability and prefer using it for my slideshows. What do I do to get an unstretched QT for import into iMovie or FCP?
    AGP Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    You're encountering a difference between rectangular DV pixels and square "computer screen image" pixels.
    When working with DV timelines, the best way to get good frame grabs would be to export your 720 x 480 still, then re-size it to 640 x 480 using Photoshop. (BTW, you can use a Photoshop batch function to re-size multiple images automatically.)
    If you're starting with a timeline that only contains square-pixel (not DV video) images, try this:
    Sequence > Settings > General Tab
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Now:
    Open a clip in the Viewer window, and look under
    Motion Tab > Distort Pane
    Aspect Ratio should = 0
    [Under certain conditions, FCP makes educated guesses as to the pixel aspect ratios of imported images, and uses this setting to automatically apply corrective distortion when it believes it is necessary. Usually it is correct, but under unusual circumstances like your project, you may have to correct FCP's correction.]
    The fastest way to confirm this would be to
    Select All
    Ctrl-Click
    Remove Attributes
    Check "Distortion"
    [If it is greyed out it means that none of your clips have any distortion applied so you are good to go.]
    Now you can export un-distorted frames from a square-pixel timeline, and shouldn't experience any pixel-aspect ratio confusion.
    Good luck,
    Zap

  • Set maximum aspect ratio when exporting

    Hello,
    I'm using LR5 and I'm wondering if it's possible (maybe with plugins if necessary) to set a maximum aspect ratio when experting photos. For example I have a picture that I cropped to be a panorama, with an aspect ratio of 26:11. The print shop can print at a maximum aspect ratio of 19:11. So my 26:11 image is too small and I need to add some bars at the top and bottom of my photo to reach an aspect ratio of 19:11 (see also the sketch below). Later, when I get the finished prints, I have to cut the bars at the top and bottom with a pair of scissors for example. Is it possible to let LR automatically add these borders for a given maximum apsect ratio?

    Hi Victoria, thank you for your reply. I looked at the Mogrify plugin, but couldn't find the option I need. I see some options for canvas and resizing and adding bars, but these all require to set a certain absolute pixel dimension. I don't want to resize images to a specific pixel size, I just want to correct the aspect ratio by adding bars at the bottom and top of the photo. Maybe I'm missing something in the Mogrify plugin? Could you explain how I can add the borders automatically to reach a maximum aspect ratio of 19:11 using Mogrify? Just to be clear, all photos with an aspect ration between 11:11 and 19:11 don't have to be changed. Only photos with an aspect ratio larger than 19:11 should be changed to 19:11 by adding the bars.

  • ATV3 Different subtitle size according movie aspect ratio

    Hi guys,
    im getting different soft subtitle size according the aspect ratio (lettered and non-lettered) the size must be the same independently of the movie aspect, take a look the following images there are a huge difference:
    Note: The subtitle configuration are the same for the two screenshots.
    Non-lettered:
    Lettered:
    Its any way to solve that, im currently running the version 7.2 of ATV
    thks !!!

    Ok, I figured it out...
    First, you need to register for the MPMovieNaturalSizeAvailableNotification. I put this in viewDidLoad.
    [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
    selector:@selector(movieNaturalSizeAvailable:)
    name:MPMovieNaturalSizeAvailableNotification
    object:moviePlayerController];
    Then, you create the @selector function:
    - (void) movieNaturalSizeAvailable:(NSNotification *)movieNSNotification {
    NSLog(@"MovieNaturalSizeAvaiable");
    NSLog(@"Movie width is %f and movie height is %f", moviePlayerController.naturalSize.width, moviePlayerController.naturalSize.height);
    //calculate the aspect ratio
    float width = moviePlayerController.naturalSize.width;
    float height = moviePlayerController.naturalSize.height;
    float ratio = width / height;
    NSLog(@"ratio is %f", ratio);
    //if ratio < 1.4 then it must be 4:3 aspect ratio, else it is 16:9
    if (ratio < 1.4) {
    moviePlayerController.view.frame = CGRectMake(66, 29, 347, 260);
    imageView.frame = CGRectMake(66, 29, 347, 260);
    } else {
    moviePlayerController.view.frame = imageFrame;
    imageView.frame = CGRectMake(9, 29, 462, 260);
    moviePlayerController = [movieNSNotification object];
    [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] removeObserver:self
    name:MPMovieNaturalSizeAvailableNotification
    object:moviePlayerController];

  • Setting output aspect ratio

    I have a jpeg background with 1080p video scaled down to 16.2%  overlayed over it. It also has a powerpoint (jpeg) overlayed on it.  The final product is an instructor to the right of the powerpoint discussing his presentation. Everything is square pixels (1.0). My sequence is set to 996x625 the same size of the background .jpg. I need to output it to .mp4. in two sizes. When I set the height in my output settings to 996 and leave it set to maintain the aspect ratio, Premiere changes it to 996x560 and adds vertical letterbox. If I unlink the aspect ratio and change the width to 625 I get a message "Invalid frame size/frame rate for this level. Please lower the video bounds or frame rate, or increase the level and profile and try again"
    I also wanted to  make a second version reduced by 1/3 which is 664x374. Premiere allows that size, but adds letterboxing. If I am in the same ratio as the original I don't understand why it is letterboxed.
    thank you

    Projects to tend to go sideways at some point when using oddball sizing...best to stick with some sort of standard if at all possible, not just a random set of dimensions. Video encoders work on video content in blocks (matrixes) and odd numbers just don't fit into that world, as Jim stated.
    Perhaps you could create a 720p sequence, copy the content of your curent sequence into it, and rework things a bit to fit? That will also then provide a smooth pathway to smaller "standard" encoding sizes such as 640x360.

  • How do i change aspect ratio in iMovie?

    I was sent a video whose aspect ratio is messed up—squished vertically. I imported it into iMovie anyway thinking I could correct it. I thought it would happen i the Export dialog where I input a custom size. But it hasn't worked.

    I think I may know how to fix it. Just to be sure...,
    Right-click on one of your Event clips. Choose Reveal in Finder. In the Finder, right-click on the clip and choose OPEN WITH.../QUICKTIME PLAYER. In QuickTime Player, type the letter i while holding down the Command Key. This will open up the QuickTime Inspector. Tell us the dimensions of your clip and everything that is listed next to the word FORMAT:

  • Exporting Movie: Aspect Ratio

    I've been editing a music video that was shot on the HVX camera. It was shot at 720p. I started my project as a 720p project and imported all the footage (MXF files) into bins and edited my video. I go to export it and it exports to an AVI in an aspect ratio that is NOT 960x720! I checked the export settings and they are as follows:
    File Type: MS AVI
    Compressor: None
    Color Depth: Million+
    Frame Size: 960h 720v (16:9)
    Frame rate: 23.976
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
    When I edit the video in premier it is the correct aspect ratio. I click on a clip in the time line and it says "Video: 23.976 fps, 960x720 (1.333)" so what am I doing wrong here?

    The strangeness continues. I played the file in BS player and SOME of the fades worked. NONE of the fades in/out to black, but I may be able to work around that issue. I have it set up where it fades in and out to a blank space on the timeline. If I insert a black video slug the fades might work. I say this because when fading with other video (I have a couple crossfades in the video) they work just fine!
    When I play the rendered video in CS3 the fades work. Why? I don't know.
    Project settings as follows (General Tab):
    Editing Mode: P2 720P 60Hz DVCPROHD
    Timebase: 23.976 fps
    Frame Size: 960 h 720 v
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
    Fields: None
    Display format: 24fps
    Video Tab:
    File Format: DVCpro 100 720p 60Hz
    Compressor: Same as above
    Color Depth: Million+
    I'm still getting the letterboxing problem too, when I use square pixels.
    EDIT: My workaround for my fading issue did not work. I have no clue why. So for some reason TWO fades work in this project, but none of the others. The two that work are a fade in and out on a set of titles on vid track 2 and a cross-fade in between two tracking shots in the middle of the project. The fades that do not work are at the beginning and end I have a series of quick fades in and out, in typical music video fashion, that do not work at all. Except when played back in CS3, but I need them to work in other media players too!
    Thanks for all the help so far :)
    EDIT #2:
    Now even when I have the project rendering in HD Anamorphic pixels I get the same problem with the fading! It used to work when I'd render in 4:3. But now it doesn't. ARGH.

  • Cannot set correct aspect ratio.

    After Comcast completed maintenance somewhere on the network, the aspect ratio on my television changed, and now it is displayed in a zoomed in format that I cannot fix with any of the settings on my television.  With Set by Program or Just Scan, the graphics on CNN are too wide for the screen, for example--same on Bloomberg or anywhere that has graphics displayed.  On 4:3 format everything looks compressed and squeezed together.  16:9 is the same as Set by Program and Zoom is way too zoomed in.  I changed the 4:3 setting on the box, but it just made it default to non-4:3 format on those non-HD channels.  What has changed and how can I return to the correct aspect ratios for my television?

    Never mind, I figured it out myself.  I continued trying different user setting combinations on the box and finally it worked.  I think the "Pass Through" setting is what did the trick.  Everything is now in the correct aspect ratio and the graphics are displayed properly.
