Setting my WRT54G router up WITHOUT a modem!

Hey guys. When I set up my router, and install it for DHCP, the status shows like this: IP-Adress: 0.0.0.0, or like everything is at 0.0.0.0 ??? =( Right now im connected via a Switch. PLEASE help me!

1)make sure the modem is connected to the internet port and the internet LED is lit on the router
2)if you have a cable modem...on the router ui , under the "setup" tab , click on "mac add clone" subtab , enable it and click clone.. save the settings and do a power cycle
3)check the internet ip add ... if getting a valid ip add, try going online
4)if you have a DSL connection , under the "setup" tab...select the "internet connection type" as PPPoE .. enter the username and password provided by the ISP ..
5) go to the " status" tab and check whether the PPPoE login status is connected and there is a valid internet ip add ..

  • How do I set up WRT54G router with 4 computers and WVC54GC Wireless Camera

Can anyone please tell me how to set up my Home Network with full security turned on?
I have at least 4 neighbors that show up on my wireless connections list. I have a daughter that loves music and is constantly downloading viruses but only on one wireless connection. The rest of us want to be protected from that computer. My system consists of the following:
    One Linksys WRT54G Router
Two Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI adapters,
Two Linksys WVC54GC Wireless Cameras  (Possibility four if the 1st two ever work OK.)
Two Linksys LNE100TX PCI Ethernet Cards,
    One HP Ethernet Printer
Three computers were connected by Ethernet cable and one was wireless. I did not change the admin password and I thought everything was working fine for a couple of years until I found that the wireless computer was acting as a “drone” and slowing everything down to a snails pace.  It could even turn itself on.
I changed one of the Ethernet computers to wireless and decided that it might be time to also change the password and increase security.  Setting up security completely shutdown the wireless drone computer. I was OK with that, at least until I can reformat that harddrive.
I then decided while I was at it, I would add a wireless camera (WVC54GC). I set it up using the software and Ethernet cable that came with it. After 6 tries I finally got the camera to work with the cable attached, but it does not work wireless and now none of the other computers connect any more. Is there a limit on how many connections? Should I reset the router and if so, do I disconnect the DSL modem? I’m afraid of the “drone” computer because I found some very bad malware on it. One in particular caused me to replace a hard drive.
I’ve read page after page of network stuff on the Internet and I guess I just don’t know how to ask the right questions. I’m tired of fooling with this.

hi , when u talk about security , are u referring to the "viruses" your daughters PC may be propogating to the rest of the network , or are u referring to external attacks on the router or your wireless PC"s ???
In case u are referring to the "virus" attacks , the best you can do is install a good antivirus software on all PC"s and keep the virus definations updated....
In case u are referring to the wireless security , i'd suggest that your use WPA2 personal. you can select WPA2 by going to the "wireless security" option.
let me know if u need anything more.

  • Wrt54gs router to internet cable modem connection drop

With the wrt54gs router set at auto dhcp and mostly on default settings, after some time of inactivity the connection between the router and internet cable modem drops out.  That is, when there is no activity (no transmission to/from internet) the connection drops and the wireless connections shows "local only."  Any suggestions/comments on why this is so?  Thanks!

Have you tried to connect the Modem to the computer and checked if you are facing the same problem or not?
On your Router setup page, change the MTU size from AUTO to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1350 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Wireless tab and below Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Click on the sub tab under Wireless "Advanced Wireless Settings"
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • Linksys WRT54G Router set up

Hi, I recently got hold of a WRT54G Router and am trying to set it up....unfotunately, my knowledge of this kind of stuff is, lets say, basic! haha
I was wondering if anyone has set up this model (or any other model) with AOL as their ISP and if they could let me know what details I need to add or change on the set up page, and where to find it.
Some of the main info I know I need is the Host Name and Domain name, which I'm somehow having trouble tracking down. Also, I think I need to set it up as in PPOE (I think thats right...), but am not totally sure what account I'm initially dialling in with...
Any help would be brilliant! Thanks guys.

okay... connect the DSL modem >> router >> computer, try resetting the router back to factory default settings by pressing the small reset button on the back panel of the router...power cycle the n/w by unplugging the power cable of the modem and the router, wait for couple of mins. and power up the modem first, once the modem is rebooted power up the router...logon to the router's setup page, open I.E. and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1, it would ask for username and password, put "admin" as a password without any username, liksys setup page pops up...try changing encapsulation "automatic configuration DHCP" to "PPPoE" and try setting up username and password provided by the ISP and save the settings...click on the status tab on the router and try connecting to the PPPoE server....let me know the results

Having trouble setting up a linksys WRT54GS router with verizon DSL using a westell 6100F modem. the modem works fine by its self  but the router will not connect  to the internet when installed like the cd tells you to.
online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas?

  • WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address. how to change the routers IP address?

The broadband modem got broken and the ISP changed it to a new modem. Now my problem is I cannot use the router when they changed the modem. The ISP won't provide support since they didn't provide me with the wireless router. I've read through the forum and found that I had to change my router's IP address. WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address, 192.168.1.1. I already changed the local IP address of the router to 192.168.1.2, saved the setting, released and renew the ip address. Now, when I connected my internet modem cable to the router, I cannot connect to the internet. I am able to ping 192.168.1.2 but I cannot connect to the ping 192.168.1.1. Please help me do the proper setup.
    Thanks!

Hello! I solved my problem but I find the solution so weird. After changing the routers IP address to 192.168.1.2, instead of plugging the modem cable on the Internet port of the router, I plugged it in one of the WAN ports. Presto, it worked. Even my wireless connection is also working.

  • Problems setting up a WRT54G router with Vista

My husband upgraded to Windows Vista Home Basic over the weekend (we don't have the newest version! omg!angst!woe!). Today, I got a call that our DSL was turned on, I set up the modem, got the internet working, and attempted to set up the wireless router.
I have used the setup cd, the EasyLink program, and the directions to manually set up the router. I can get the router linked up properly, I can even log into the DSL modem through the router. The problem is that I can't get any of these setup programs to recognize the router. Even putting in http://192.168.1.1 brings up a "page cannot be loaded" error in both Firefox 2.0 and IE (however, when I remove the router, I can see the DSL modem fine with it). Is there some other way to get the wireless router set up, or do I need to wait for one of the two computers with XP to arrive (yay for moving with the military) to set up the router?

    Hi,
I too am having problems connecting the WRT54GS to my vista enabled pc. I have installed the software but since connecting everything my internet access is now diabolically slow. This is on the main wired machine, not wirelessly. The router is obvioulsy doing something inbetween (possibly the firewall) but this has made the speeds almost unbearable, negating the object of the new pc !!
Is there some settings I should eb checking ?
    Many Thanks

  • Setting UP Static IP With WRT54G router

Setting a static IP shouldn't be a problem, since setting the static IP is done on the computer.  So why am I having such a problem?? Let me tell a little about my setup.
I have a DSL connection.  My DSL netopia modem uses PPPoe of course, and broadcast a DHCP connection to my WRT54G router.  3 computers are connected to this router. 1 desktop (vista) wired and 2 laptops (XP) wireless/wired. I'm attempting to create a static IP for the desktop and later for the laptops, but each time I do, I lose internet connectn nor am I able to connect to DSL modem at 192.168.1.254
Within the router I have changed the DHCP count to 5, with the starting IP as 192.168.1.1.  Linksys help advise to change IP to 192.168.2.1, but I still get the same problem when creating a static ip.
Within desktop (vista Home Premium SP1), I have changed the local area network to the following:
    IP          - 192.168.1.060
    Mac      - 255.255.255.0
    Gateway-192.168.1.1
    DNS      -192.168.1.1
Once I change the IP to above, from obtain auto, I lose the connection.
Later the laptops IP address will be changed to 192.168.070 and .080
Aren't static Ip address suppost to be outside the DHCP range?
Isn't the gateway address my router?
apoloize for the big questions, but tried to get all information within it.
     Thanks
    balltripii

Before doing this, In Windows go to run and type CMD hit enter. In the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and record your DNS server/servers if more than one. Not getting the proper DNS server information, will prevent you from going to websites like linksys.com by typing linksys.com in the address bar, instead you would have to know the IP of linksys.com to browse the page, not very user friendly and I can barely remember my phone number, let alone IP addresses of all the sites I go.
Log into your router. Leave your WAN settings alone, since that will determine your settings for the connection to the internet. Now configure your Network settings on the router. The 192.168.1.1  or 192.168.2.1 for the ip and leave the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as is. Disable DHCP on the router. DHCP is a service that the router will use to issue out IP addresses automatically. This is the complete opposite of what you are trying to do with a static connection. Once these settings have been changed, you will need to configure the connection on the PC and any other connecting device to the router via wired or wireless since DHCP is now disabled. If not, you will just be stuck all day while the network adapter trys to get a network address and DHCP has a heart attack.
Configure your network adapters. Assign the IP address. If you used 192.168.1.1 then the IP will need to be 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 or if you used 192.168.2.1 the IP will need to be 192.168.2.2 through 192.168.2.254 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and enter the DNS server information as recorded from earlier. Default gateway will be whatever the IP address of the router you configured. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 etc etc etc.
Just remember to not duplicate any IP address when configuring other devices and all should work well.
This worked fine for me earlier today when I needed a static connection.

  • Trying to set up linksys BEFW11S4 router to AT&T modem

I just got DSL on Monday and it works when connected directly to my computer.  I tried to set up my router.  Updated the Setup for Internet Connection Type to PPPoE and entered the User Name and Password.  I also updated LAN IP Address to 192.168.2.1.  When I go under Status, the LogIn now says Disable.  I have no idea why it is saying this now.  I didn't update anything else.  Can someone help me?

It's a comman thing. On the old version routers when the Internet Connection is "PPPoE"...The Login Always shows as disable under status tab.It will only show you enable when the Internet Connection will be on "DHCP".

  • WRT54G ROUTER CONNECTION PROBLEM

    I have a WRT54g router.
Everything works great for a period of time even after turning the computer, internet modem and router on and off several times.
Then I turn everything on and the computer does not connect to the internet.
It go and connect the computer directly to the internet modem and I have internet access.
To be able to use the router again I have to reset the modem and input all the settings which I do with the setup disk.
I have been using channel six in case this makes any difference.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    connection DMS: HSD1.fl.comcast.net
    IP address          :192.168.1.100
    subnet mask      :255.255.255.0

    ping                      : sent 4 received 4 lost
    reply                      :bytes 32   time 1ms   TTL  64
It does not connect to the internet now but if I reset in the back of the modem and reload the setting via the original CD that came with the unit it starts to connect. Eventually one of the times that I power up it stops connecting to the internet although it still ping's out.
I also tried to load the update of the newer solfware but it does the same with or without the update.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can't get my WRT54GS router to work

I have a few-years-old WRT54GS that was set up and working for months, then put away when my new ISP provided a router with their DSL modem.  Now I'm on a cable ISP which supplies a modem but not a router, so I want to use the Linksys model.  I've set it up but the Linksys router won't connect to the internet, even though my computer indicates that I have an "excellent" signal from the router.  I thought that pressing the re-set button would revert the router to its "first time" setup state, so I could run the setup disk, but that doesn't work: still no internet.  The router is out of warranty and Cisco wants me to buy a new one,  or charge just as much to provide technical support.  I'd prefer to solve the problem without further enriching Cisco. Can anyone help me out?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Bypass the router and connect the computer directly to the cable modem.
Make sure that your computer can access the Internet when connected directly to the modem.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port 1 on the router.
Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Follow this link to configure Linksys router with the Cable Internet service.

  • WRT54G Router and passphrase question

I purchased a laptop computer last week and a WRT54G router.  Got home, set it up with no major problems and had a question about the passphrase/password
My setup:  1 desktop computer and 1 laptop computer
The first time I got on my network from the laptop, it asked me for the passphrase and then let me on.  The next time I fired up the laptop, it just automatically connected me to my network
When I look at my network on my laptop, it says "Security-enabled".
Shouldn't I have to use the passphrase everytime I connect to my network?  Or, does my network recognize the laptop and automatically signs it in.

Lilla's Tips for Securing your Home Router...
Change the router password (default=admin) to a 32 character password using a Strong Password Generator (e.g., keygen, wlankeygen).
IP Address of the router. ... Many default to the standard 192.168.1 or 2 subnet internally and give the router itself the IP address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 ... consider changing the IP addressing to a difficult-to-guess internal subnet like 192.168.12.1 or 192.168.83.1 (you can use any number from 1 to 254 in the third position in most cases). Source: http://www.jiwire.com/wi-fi-security-home-networks-1.htm
Change your Wireless SSID from linksys (default) to something unique, that doesn't identify your hardware or you. Be aware that crackers use online lists like this one to lookup information that helps them gain access to systems with inadequate security.
    Use WPA/WPA2 not WEP encription
WEP = poor security (easily cracked/hacked)
WPA = good security when used with Strong Passwords - see Perfect Passwords below
    WPA2 = best security
Perfect Passwords - GRC's Ultra High Security - Password Generator
Since the passwords used to generate pre-shared keys are configured into the network only once, and do not need to be entered by their users every time, the best practice is to use the longest possible password and never worry about your password security again.
If you are connecting only 802.11g devices, select “G-Only” from the “Wireless Network Mode” menu. Likewise, choose “B-Only” for 802.11b devices. By selecting G-Only/B-Only, you lock out anyone trying to connect using anything else. Source: http://paininthetech.com/5_minute_wireless_network_security_for_your_home
Wireless SSID Broadcasting. By default it is enabled; assure that it has not been changed. Microsoft recommends that you do not configure access points as non-broadcast (hidden) networks; sources: KB929661, KB907405, KB811427. You will come across articles/posts that recommend disabling this, but this is old school thinking.
Disabling SSID broadcasting will not stop a wireless signal being found, and some wireless clients will not logon to the correct wireless signal without SSID being enabled. Source: http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47120
MAC address filtering. MAC address filtering without WPA or WPA2 is pretty much no security at all. And with WPA or WPA2 and a strong pre-shared key you don’t need it because WPA is considered secure and anyone who hypothetically has the power and knowledge to crack WPA would not be hindered by MAC address filtering to gain access to your WLAN. • WRT54G router won't let me turn on security.

I have a WRT54G router, and when I am in the security area, where you choose WPA, WEP, etc... I keep clicking the dropdown menu, and when I choose anything BUT disable, the security auto-sets back to disable. I have rebooted the router. I have rebooted the modem. I have changed my router's password.
How do I turn my WEP back on without it just saying "lol....DISABLE!" on me?.... It's driving me nuts. >>;.... Also, for additional notation, if it helps, my US light on my modem is no longer green, it is orange since this issue has occured. Is there any connection that might be related to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just fixed my problem... Ended up being an IE setting that was holding this page in cache??
I used chrome and was able to fix it.

  • WRT54G v7 wont connect to modem / internet

Hi all i have a problem here with a new unit of Linksys WRT54G v7 in Indonesia. Previously i have some other linksys products such as wag200g wre54g and wrt54gv1 without problem at Singapore. ----- so here is the problem= i bought one new unit of WRT54Gv7 and connect it to the modem to achieve wireless connectivity. before i connect both of them i've set different IP for the router so that it does not clash with the modem IP. however, unlike the v1 of WRT54G i cannot access the internet. not even the modem IP. also, the wireless connection likes to disconnect itself despite having excellent signal strength. when i call the shop back about this. they changed my WRT54G with a new exact product. ----- so i went home and try. unfortunately no difference in performance, i still cannot access both internet and modem. i can access to modem rarely though. i call back the shop, they told me to disable dhcp server and reset the router. no offence. but i've done every single details they asked me to do. in the end nothing happen. ----- i do lot of research on the net and many told me that WRT54Gv7 is the worst version of WRT54G currently. im not sure whether this is true or not. but i'll appreciate it if someone would share some lights here... im confused, is both of the product defective, or my settings are wrong. in fact i've plug the router to 3 different modems without luck. ----- thanks for reading and sorry for the bad english.

hmm thanks for the reply. but i got a trick to deal with the router, that is=== i disable dhcp server and connect the broadband cable to the number 1 instead of internet port. the shopguy told me and ridiculously this method works, although i know this is not the way it suppose to be...
