Setting Pixel Dimensions in Raw File

Hi,
Is it ok to exceed the pixel dimensions of my camera when opening a raw file?  Would the quality be any better in a print?
Thank you

It's ok to do so, advantages/disadvantages have been discussed ad nauseum on this forum.

  • How do I change DPI in Photoshop CC without changing the pixel dimension of the file?

I used to be able to do this in Photoshop CS6 by simply clicking the check boxes in the "image size" dialog box:
    scale styles
    constrain proportions
    resample image
    (all boxes UNCHECKED)
Then input the dpi (usually converting a 300dpi print file to 72dpi for web). And the pixel dimension will stay the same.
In CC the only option I see is "scale styles" which does not apply to the pixel dimension of the file.
Please help. I would hate to have to do this function in CS6 all the time.
    CS6:
    CC:

Just uncheck the [ ] Resample checkbox, then change your Resolution.
Change the units from Percent to Pixels if you want to see pixel dimensions.
Once you've successfully run it through (after OK), note that it will remember your units settings the next time you use it.

  • How set image size open raw file?

How to set image size/resolution when opening a raw file in pse 11 editor??
win 7 pro; pse 11 settings: edit>preferences>print resolution = 337.596, screen resolution 109 dpi( 27 inch, dell U 2711). Originally print resoltuion was set to 240 dpi  but was changed in case this was causeing a problem. CRAW v 7.4.0.137
Camera alpha 65, image size is: 6000x3376 dpi; (83.33x46.88 inch)
Problem is: Currently when I edit a RAW file in CRAW and then open in pse editor image size is: 6000x3376 px; 25x14.667 inches at 240 dpi ( by ration this corresponds to:17.773x10 inch at 337.6 dpi)
I am trying to change settings so the raw file opens as: 17.776x10 and anywhere from240 to 337.6 dpi
whatever works or is esiest to set.
My settings are for use in creating blue ray dvd movies and with cropping and editing printing high quality pictures for family.
Thanks  in advance for any help you can provide.

    That's a Sony Alpha SLT-A65?
Are those pixel dimensions of 6000 x 3376 the size the camera raw files came out of the camera?
You can't really change the resolution that the photoshop elements version of camera raw opens the the files into the pse 11 at.
(i think 240 is the default for most cameras)
You can however set the resolution with Image>Resize>Image Size if you need to for printing or other uses.
In the Image size dialog uncheck Resample Image and enter the resolution.

  • How do I set photoshop to process raw files in background all the time?

Sometimes when I process my raw files in photoshop it will process them in the background. Other times it will make me wait while the files process until I can access photoshop again. Anyone know why this happens or how I can consistently process raw files in the background? Up to CS5 I think it was an option somewhere but I can not find it now.

Hi eusib43, <br /> Sorry you are having problems.
The redirection blocking feature is really intended to help users that need to use screenreaders and such; rather than being any sort of effective security measure; but some users set that unnecessarily.
    * Try '''Firefox Button (or Tools) → Options → |Advanced| → <u>Accessibility</u> →<br /> [] Warn me when Websites try to redirect or reload the page ''' <br />(Wording and exact menu options may differ somewhat)
    * See [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption#w_accessibility]]'''_accessibility'''
    * Does unsetting that solve your problem ?

  • How can ACR 5.2 be set to open RAW files as 16 Bit as default?

When I open RAW files in ACR they always open as 8 Bit. Is there any way to set ACR so that RAW files always open as 16 Bit as default? How?
    Lightroom 2.2/ PS CS4

In the middle/bottom area of the Camera Raw window is a 'hyper link' type of line showing some default info. Clicking on that link brings up the Workflow Options dialog box. The 'Depth' setting should be set to 16 Bits/Channel. Then press OK to accept the changes then press Done to close the ACR Window and save the changes.

  • Bridge CS6 bug (?) opening Hasselblad RAW files

    Summary:
Some of my Hasselblad RAW files cause an error message when opening in Bridge or PS. Further when using Bridge, more and more of these files get corrupted. I can use Nikon RAWs without problem so it does not seem to be my system or setup. I only happens with the Hasselblad RAWs. I can use Hasselblad files using the original Hasselblad software without problems so it can not be my Hasselblad camera setup which I am using for years now. Further, I can still open these CS corrupted files with the hasselblad software. When I only work with the Hasselblad software there is absolutely NO problem for years now. I only have this issue when I switch to Bridge CS6.
    Details:
I have a set of Hasselblad FFF RAW files that I can use and open without problems in Bridge CS6 (5.0.0.399 x64). But one file of them did not show a preview icon and when I tried to open it in PS6 or RAW editor, I get an errormessage "Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.". When I open the same file in Hasselblad "Phocus" software there is no problem. I can see the preview thumb there and I can play around with the file and even export to TIF or DNG without any trouble. I can even open the exported DNG in PS or Bridge/RAW editor then. But it is impossible to work with the RAW file in Bridge.
Yes, it looks like the file is corrupted. But why can I open the same file with the Hasselblad software? I work with the Hasselblad software for years now and NEVER had any issues.
Now I started working with the uncorrupted files in CS6 (playing with the RAW settings, open in PS, etc.). After some days I get more and more "corrupted" files. Even files that showed a thumb before are no longer showing the icon and are unable to open. So the same files that where ok at first now are corrupted! This only happens with Hasselblad files. I have absolutely no issue with Nikon RAWs, which I also use a lot. So the problem can not be caused by my computer or my system.
No there is no issue with my Hasselblad setup because I use this for years now and it workes absolutely flawless with the Hasselblad RAW software. the problems arised when I started using Bridge CS6. When I turn back to the Hasselblad Phocus software all these corrupted files are able to open! All files are 100% ok there! It shows all the thumbs and I can export these files to TIF and DNG without any trouble. Back in Bridge I can even open the DNG files then but not the original RAW files.
Please don't tell me my files are corrupted or I need to change my way of file transfer. This is definately not the case because everything works fine when I work the way I did for years. The problems started when I switched to CS6.

The older FFF format is not completely supported in ACR.  I suggest using Phocus to read the FFF files and save/export as DNG, which can then be read in ACR.

  • Raw files & batch resizing

Photoshop CS2 & CS3 will not open my NEF raw files {Nikon D300}.  Both versions have always opened my raw files.  Also, CS3 locks up when I batch resize jpgs.

Out of curiosity, are the images remaining open in Photoshop as the batch is processing them, or are they closing one by one?
If the former, you may just be overwhelming Photoshop CS3's abilities to maintain many open documents.  You might be able to correct that by adding a document close operation in the action you're batching.
Another thought is this:  Recent versions come with a script called Image Processor, which sounds like it can do what you want.  What I don't remember is whether Photoshop CS3 had Image Processor.
If this kind of work is common for you, and especially if you're seeing things break when trying to process a lot of data, you should consider upgrading your computer, your operating system, and your Photoshop to modern 64 bit standards.  All these things have made great strides in power and reliability in the last decade since 32 bit computers with only a few gigabytes of RAM and Photoshop CS3 were current.
Another possibility, if you're not wanting to go down that road right away, might be to use another tool to do your resizing.  As one example, the free program IrfanView (for PC) can easily be set up to extract raw file preview JPEGs and to do batch resizing and format conversions.

  • Can't see raw files on my lumix lx3

    Hello.
I got a lumix lx3 a while ago and I've been shooting both RAW and jpg photos but have only imported the jpg photos up until now. I decided to get Aperture 3 so that I could import my RAW files but it doesn't even recognise they are on the camera. Can anyone help? This is incredibly frustrating. If it is of any use it is Aperture 3.1.2 and I have firmware vers 2.2 on the camera.
    Thanks

Ok just in case anyone else has this problem in the future I know what the fix is. In USB mode on the lx3 do not have it set to PictBridge as RAW files do not seem to be viewable using this mode. An afternoon wasted but at least I can finally get my RAW's.

  • Adobe: Raw Reader Corrupts Leica Raw Files

I used to be able to process Raw files from the Leica D-Lux 3 camera in Adobe Raw Reader. At some point, a newer version of Raw Reader would instantly corrupt (visual pixel garbage) the Raw files. The same thing occurs in LR.2 The corruption is real, and permanent. It looks like gamut warning, but is not. This is the ONLY software that can process Raw files from Leica D-Lux 3. (yes this IS a discontinued model, but they were popular, and I have hundred's of files that I can no longer open -as I'm sure other users have discovered.) I have tested this on other systems with the same result. Would Adobe consider building a fix for this please? (I have the most current reader for CS4)

Have you also tried DNG Converter?

  • Keeping Raw File Settings

    To whom it may concern.
I have recently started using Premiere Pro and have found myself in a spot of bother. I have recorded a video in mp4 format which is in the 600mb file size area. After I have finished editing my video I cannot seem to find a correct export setting that keeps the raw files same picture quality and relative file size. Shouldnt there be a function that when you import a video you can keep the raw files exact settings? Any help in the matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It really comes down to workflow.
Now, the mp4 format you are getting from your camera is NOT raw.  It is a highly compressed datastream that contains a lot of information.  Raw video footage tends to be extremely large and you need a very fast system to process them. These compressed files allow a wider variety of programs to access the footage.
Now, an important thing to realize is that editing video and playing video are very different processes, and video files that are easily played are not necessarily easily edited.  Premiere tries to take some of the workload off of your shoulders, but you still have to be mindful of the fact that these files you are getting from your camera are not necessarily easy for your computer to edit.
That being said, the destination of your footage is very important.  Are your movies going to be sent out as video packages for laymen to view on their computer?  Then you need a good easily translatable file that is compressed enough that the file sizes will allow for easy distribution and playback.  I recommend H.264 with one of our presets - They will cover most needs.
Are these movies going to be held onto for awhile on your computer to be used in another program or even brought back into Premiere for further use?  If that is the case, then you can try to match the settings of your original footage as much as possible - using H.264.  It's not going to match exactly, as the files are not being used for the same thing - storage on a camera vs editing in a NLE.
There are some good intermediate codecs available that are not part of Premiere but should work.  I've heard a lot of chatter on here for DNxHD and UT.  Both of those are free.

  • Does Adobe offer an app to perform a batch conversion from Canon CR.2 raw files to TIFF files?

Note the option to open the first file and apply settings.
Personally, I'd be nervous of batch processing RAW files because they can need significantly different treatments file to file, but it is doable.  I would assume that Image Processor would allow the XML sidecar files, so you would have the option of looking through and fine tuning any files that were not up to scratch.
You do not need to use that option.   There are two other options.   If the RAW file has never been process by ACR then ACR would use your defaults for the cameras used no ACR dialog UI will display.  If the RAW file has been process by ACR there are ACR settings either in you ACR database or in your RAW files sidecar files in the same folder as the raw file these will be used.
I will often use the Bridge to process groups of RAW image files that look like they have similar exposures looking at the thumbnails the bridge displays.  ACR will open for the group of RAW files.  I will process one RAW file and sync the settings to the other image in the group.   I may also  make other ACR setting for some in the group like crops or spot healing for dust that may be in some sykes  because my sensor needed cleaning. When I'm done all I do is click on the DONE button in ACR so it will save out ACR setting for all the raw files in the group.  No image files are saved.   When I use the image processor script I never use the open first RAW option and the Automate Image Processor Pro plug-in script does not have that option open first RAW  in ACR and use the setting set for all other RAW files..

  • Image files with large pixel dimensions display out of focus in a Bridge viewer?

I Create image files with pixel dimensions 2048x1365. When I display these files from Bridge on my Mac, either by pressing the space bar or in a slideshow, the images are out of focus. If I left click or click/hold and move the images slightly on screen they display in sharp focus. Unfortunately, although landscape-orientation images display correctly with no change in position or size, portrait-orientation files are enlarged and display with top and bottom off the screen. The pixel dimensions of my monitor are 2450x1600 so, yes, if portrait images are displayed at 100% they should display off screen, but this does not excuse the out of focus display of landscape files on this large screen. Nor does this explain why the portrait files are out of focus when they fit on screen. When the same files open in a Camera Raw window they are in focus. When they open in Photoshop at 100% the files are in focus.

  • How to reduce jpg file size, not pixel dimensions?

I am preparing images for the web and I really have 2 questions: one about gifs, and one about jpgs.
My standard procedure is to reduce the image to the desired pixel dimensions at 600 dpi
That gives me a crisp small image. then I either use it as is if the file size is low enough (I try for under 600 kb) or convert it to a gif with the save for web and devices tool.
So here are my 2 questions (I will count this solved with either answer)
    1) When I convert to a gif I have the 4 boxes: one with original size, the other 3 with options but often the options are too low res for me How do I change my 3 options to start at a higher gif res?
    2) If I try to reduce the file size of the jpg in the image size box I set the resolution lower ( 400, 300), which lowers the pixel dimensions and the filesize, but I don't want to cahnge the pixel dimensions. And  If I reset the pixel dimensions back to the size I want them, even though it is a lower resolution the file size doesn't change. How to reduce jpg file size using only the resolution, not pixel dimensions?  PS I have tried messing with checking and unchecking the 3 little boxes( scale styles, constrain proportions, and resample) but nothing has worked.

Gif is not a great filetype, especially if you want a crisp image. What are your pixel dimensions?
For web, it makes no difference what the dpi is, only the final pixel dimensions so once you have that as you want, use 'Save for Web and Devices' and you can lower the quality - 100% being max and 0% being lowest. I wouldn't save anything below 55%. For a 600kb image, your dimensions must be rather big.

when I open a raw file (NEF Nikon 7100)  and apply setting then click save, I get an error ( could not complete your request because of a program error ). Ideas?

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.

  • How to set color profile when exporting a RAW file version as a JPEG?

I import my raw files to Aperture and when exporting as a JPEG I want to specify a color profile of sRBG. I cannot see how to set the color profile for the export. Does anyone know how to do this?

When you go to export versions, edit the presets, and there is a drop down box that lets you select the profile.
I'd suggest picking up the Aperture book by Luna, Long, and Harrington. Lots of great info there.
