Setting PortalPath from database not working.

Question

We're authenticating via LDAP to OID. We then read out user group membership from a table in Oracle. We've recently tried adding a PORTALPATH variable to the db table so that we can specify the default dashboard for each user.
We have a session init block that uses this query to specify the PORTALPATH:
select obi_def_dashboard as 'PORTALPATH' from obi_users where lower(obi_user) = lower(':USER')
We've required the user authentication block and the group query block to be executed first.
We can create a report in answers and use VALUEOF(PORTALPATH) to see what it's set to we get:
/shared/HPO/_portal/HPO%20%2D%20BI     
Which is the correct path. When I enter the url: https://<server>/analytics/saw.dll?Dashboard&PortalPath=/shared/HPO/_portal/HPO%20%2D%20BI it correctly brings up the dashboard.
For whatever reason, it just doesn't seem to be defaulting to the dashboard when you log in.
Any ideas?

Only one thought - if you choose "Settings" > "My Account" and change the "Default Dashboard" to anything other than default, it over-rides the PORTALPATH variable.
You can try setting it to something different (e.g. Dash 1), saving, then re-setting back to Default, logging out then in.
