Setting prefered applications manually in Gnome 3.2.1

Hello,
I just switched from Chromium to Chrome. I first did sudo pacman -R chromium and then installed google-chrome from AUR.
In the System Settings it still shows Chromium as the default web browser but I can't change it to chrome since there is no other entry.
When I started Chrome for the first time it asked me if I want it as my default browser but that did not have any effect.
Is there a way to set Chrome as default manually. I can't use any links in Pidgin anymore.

I had this same problem but it's gone. I did many things that I don' know what they mean, but I guess solve was pavucontrol or alsa-utils + weird systemctl commands i found with help of search engines. Volume is mute on login screen but goes on after login.
pacman -S pavucontrol
pavucontrol
and put volume up. If this doesn't help also try installing alsa-utils and
systemctl enable alsa-store.service

Cannot set preferred application to open .eml files

I usually use SeaMonkey 2.0.5Pre (Mozilla) as my browser and mail client. I have a number of e-mails that were saved as .eml files, using SeaMonkey. Recently I had some general system problems. In the process of rectifying these, I rebuilt my hard disk directory, using Disk Warrior, and the LaunchServices database, using Onyx.
Ever since then, some of my saved .eml e-mails open in MS Entourage (which I possess but have never used) when double-clicked; and "Finder/File/Info/Open with/Change all" does nothing to discourage this behaviour. How can I persuade all .eml files to open in SeaMonkey?

[Solved]Can't change preferred applications in Gnome

I can't change the preferred applications in gnome. At the 'open with' tab in a files properties, I can't choose another application as below .
If I try opening it with another app it via the right click menu and choosing 'Open with Other Apllication' then I get a 'Could not add application to the application database' error.
I assume it's some sort of premissions problem... :?

[Solved] Change preferred applications in gnome-shell

I already do know that you can change the preferred application for a particular file type by right-clicking and then "open with other application" and choosing the default application. However I use .tex files extensively and installed Texworks (V0.4) to handle it. However when I click on .tex file in nautilus it always opens with gedit. I clicked on "open with other application", however that list did not show Texworks.
On searching through arch wiki and google, I found some posts saying if you can add the file type association in the file ~.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list. However I do not know the syntax for .tex file type.
Is there a way to add Texworks to "open with other application list? Or is there any other command line way?

Your program should show up if you add a *.desktop file (e. g. to /usr/share/applications or ~.local/share/applications/). The important piece is the exec line, which has to look like this:
Exec=yourprogram %U

Xfce preferred applications

Hi All,
When I'm in the Thunderbird email program, clicking on a link does not open firefox. These programs are both selected in the preferred applications section of xfce settings. Does anyone here know of any tricks that I might be missing?

Yes, Thunderbird ignores any preferred apps you might have set in Xfce (or Gnome and KDE, for that matter). You need to go to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced --> Config Editor (it's the same thing as Firefox's "about:config"), and add a string key "network.protocol-handler.app.http". Setting it to "xdg-open" should make it behave and use your preferred app, but if that doesn't work you can just set it to "/usr/bin/firefox" or whatever.
You can set a similar key, "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto" in Firefox to "xdg-email" to use your preferred app for mailto: URLs.

Can I set the Fan manually..?

I use BOINC and because of that my Thinkpad T410 crashes quite often!
(Although I let BOINC only use one core!) Can I somehow set the fan manually to the maximum and set it back to normal when I stop BOINC?

Just a suggestion ... since you leave the BOINC on when the laptop is idle, do elevate the laptop since the software is constantly running the proc up. By elevating the laptop you enable more air to get "pulled" into the base of the laptop thus better ventilation = cooler and happier laptop when you volunteer.

Setting the "Application" thats displayed in MSSQL 2k

I have a flex project that calls several cfc files. When we
have deadlocks, we want to track down what/who was causing the
lock. In prior versions of coldfusion I heard it was possible to
set the "Application" which was displayed in the process info
listing in mssql. Any idea's on how I could go about modifying the
cfc so that I can set whats displayed in mssql?

There is no way, if you want it to be precise, you need to

What you could do (if the image is vector like -limited
colors) it try to trace
it in flash. Flash has the built in feature that traces

Tho, not always produce great results, for some images it's

By converting to vector you could than easily delete unwanted
parts and keep just
the shape (group of colors) of that trace for your HIT frame.
If the map however is a photo, they you will have more luck
doing it manually by hand.
I will normally zoom IN allow and just use the brush tool to
draw.

[SOLVED] Unable to set default application to open files

Hello,
Whenever I try to set a default application for a file type (an avi for example) by right-clicking the file in Nautilus and choosing Open with Other Application, I can select the application (in this case VLC), check the Remember this Application checkbox and click Open, I always get the below message:
Could not set application as the default: Can't create user application configuration folder /root/.local/share/applications: Permission denied
I'm not logged in as root (confirmed with "whoami") so I'm not sure why it's trying to access the root home folder.
I'm thinking this is simply a misconfigured path statement (forgive the Windows terminology) but I'm not sure where to start looking. Any help would be most appreciated.

The situation has already changed a bit. Still being in Windows mode, I decided to try a reboot. After rebooting I no longer get the error I was before (I wonder if it had something to do with logging in initially as root then su'ing to my user account) but the association with vlc just isn't sticking.
I noticed though that now when I right-click on a video file I get the option to "Open with Movie Player" as well as "Open with VLC media player" (which does do what it's supposed to), which wasn't there before. For grins I went and set the preferred multimedia app to VLC through System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, but that didn't help.
Is there a place these preferences are stored that I might take a peek at?

Change All / Get Info issue. How to set which application opens a file?

I would like to be able to set which application opens a specific file, but cannot get the 'Change all' option in the get info to stick, or to have scvope beyond the immediate folder. For example: whenever I download an.xml file and try to open it the application it defaults to is 'Property List editor' - so I have to go into 'get info' and set the application that I want to use to open the file. Let's say - Textmate. That file will then remain set, for the length of that session anyway - but clicking 'Change all' will not mean that the next file downloaded will default to 'Textmate', or that any .xml files outside the folder will open in Textmate. I have to set them all manually, which gets to be a drag.
I once had a little open source app. that I used to set the preferences as to which application opened a specific suffix - which worked with some, some of the time... but after a clean install I lost it - and can't remember what it was called. Anyway, it didn't entirely solve the problem, only lessened it.

*Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window.
I know that what I posted may have been what you have been doing, but wanted to double check.
I don't know to what application you are referring but application/file type association is done by Launch Services. Potentially this can become corrupted. You can use Onyx (free) utility to rebuild LS, but in doing so you will lose all non-default associations.
As with any problems, I would also make sure you have run disk utility to verify and repair your drive, and repair permissions on your computer, before doing any other actions. It's surprising what that can clear up. You can slo just try starting in Safe mode, then restarting normally and see if that helps.

2010 SP3 DAG - Setting preferred owners on the cluster resource

Is there any technical reason to stop me setting preferred owners for the cluster resource of a DAG through Failover Cluster Manger?
I assume that doing it would not make the configuration an "unsupported" one?
The reason would be to ensure that the cluster resource, and therefore the PAM, was retained in the primary datacentre, rather than moving to a node in the secondary datacentre.

How to set an Application Item from PL/SQL

I am attempting to set an Application Item
After login to my app, I want to retrieve a row from my SETTINGS table and populate some Application Items with the settings information so that I can
display some of that settings information on every page.
Just to start, I created one Application Item named F106_YEAR
I then created a Shared Components Application Process which executes on New Session: After Authentication
I created this process as an Anynomous PL/SQL block.

I've tried a couple of other Syntax tricks attempting to reference the Application Item F106_YEAR from within PL/SQL (like V('F106_YEAR') but nothing seems to be working.

I've tried both of the following versions as an Application Process set to run on New Session after Authentication:

How to set an application item when report column link is clicked?

I am trying to set the short name of a bread crumb entry when I drill into a detail from an interactive report page.
The master report has a column link with target = detail - "page in this application"
I can pass page items through the URL and they are set on the target page.
How can I set an application item before the target page is called?
Is there a way to set a process before the link is followed?

I'm not totally sure that I understood the question but, it soounds like you want to set the value of some page items on the page that is opened when you click a link on a column in the master window. Is this right?
If so, you can achieve what you want by creating hidden page item(s) on the target page. In the master page, on which every column provides the link, go into Report Attributes, click on the link column and scroll down to the section labeled "Column Link" Within this section, set the link text to the current column value, e.g. #MASTER_REPORT_COLUMN_NAME_HERE#. Set the target to "Page in this Application" and pick the page number for the target window.
Underneath this you will see a section to set set the value for page items. If you click the flashlight, you can search for the hidden page item that you created above. Use the same value to set it as you did the link text, i.e. #MASTER_REPORT_COLUMN_NAME_HERE#. Do this and let APEX take care of passing the values on the URL.
On the child page, just set whatever control you want to dynamically pick up the value from the hidden field. For example, if you hidden field where named P4_CLEARER_NAME. You could set the title attribute to "Contact Information for &P4_CLEARER_NAME."
You need the preceeding "&" and terminating "." around the name of you hidden page item to do this.

after choosing the manually manage your songs you will not be able to add videos by clicking "update". all you going to do.. after converting videos compatible to ipod video, click your ipod on the left portion of the i tunes it will immediately show your songs from your ipod then drag the selected video from its folder to your i tunes just like adding songs to your ipod

Strange characters on websites after setting preferred in fonts.conf

After setting preferred fonts in fonts.conf, websites are displaying all sorts of misplaced characters like arabic glyphs, a Tux icon, english glyphs that are out-of-place, like such:

I'm just using one prefered font for serif and one for sans. But I don't understand why arabic and english glyphs would be appearing. Do I need to add a symbol font to my preferred fonts? Or what? Thx.

You're editing /etc/fonts/fonts.conf?, because that's supposed to break the configuration. The wiki-recommended way is to create a file in /etc/fonts/conf.d such as 60-preferences.conf, and put the preferences there. Mine which works on my box contains

WRE54G v3 - I manage to set it up manually but it crashes when I add security

I have attempted to set up the WRE54G via the cd but kept getting the "can not associate AP in repeater mode". I googled it and tried all the solutions suggested with no joy. It doesn't want to use the cd, I did it time after time changing things and nothing worked.
So I decided to set it up manually. I used this link http://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-to,review-308.html to help me. It worked up to stage 9, when I attempted to set up WPA security like my router has. Once I set up the WPA security, I pressed ok on the window that popped up, and everything crashed. The window went to "can not find this page" - I had no confirmation that it had worked. I checked the wireless networks and no security came up on the network for the expander. Also the link LED stayed red on the actual wre54g.
I am a bit of a novice at this kind of thing, but I managed it before with my linksys router, but now I've had to change it nothing works! It is causing me a lot of stress.
My router is 192.168.0.1, its a sky sagem wireless router f@st 2420.
I changed my WAN to 192.168.1.239 in order to see my expander. I then changed my expander to 192.168.0.40 so that my router and computers and expander can talk to each other!!

You could have followed that too closely. If your router is 192.168.0.1, you should make the RE 192.168.0.240 (not 192.168.1.240 like in the instructions). You don't need to change the WAN to XXX.XXX.1.XXX.
Edit: OK, I read a little closer and RE IP addy should be OK. Doesn't have to be 240 but make sure it is unique. Also, since you have been changing your router settings, please try a power cycle of the whole network. Bring the router up first, wait for lights to stabilize, RE next, wait for steady blue link and flashing activity, then clients.
