Setting resolution to 1680x1050 60Hz on Mac Mini

I have a non-Apple display that I am using with a Mac Mini, OSX 10.5.8. This display has a native display resolution of 1680x1050. Unfortunately this is not one of the display options in System Preferences, although there are display options with an even higher resolution. Is there any way that I can force the Mac Mini to output a 1680x1050 resolution?
Alternatively, is there some lower resolution that will be "native" for a 1680x1050 monitor? The monitor in question is a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW.
Thanks for your help!

1680 x 1050 is the only resolution that will give a good picture. If OSX won't give it, you can use SwitchResX

  • How to set up dual monitors with a Mac Mini

The Mac Mini has only one video output port. I very nearly didn't buy a Mac Mini system because I need to work with two monitors. I use the second monitor to display information in Web pages, PDFs, and Word documents while I am working in the main window.
However, I discovered after quite a bit of Googling that it is possible to set up dual monitors using an inexpensive USB video adapter (about $70).
So I bought my Mini (1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 200GB 7200rpm Seagate Momentus), and I also bought a USB video adapter called the EVGA Plus.
I've installed this system and used it now for a week, and I am quite pleased with it. So I thought I'd pass this information along to anyone who's interested. Please note that, although this is my first post to this forum, this isn't spam -- I have no financial relationship with any of the companies mentioned here, other than as a customer.

    EVGA Plus:

Their literature does not mention Mac OS X compatibility. However, the underlying technology is made by Display Link. You can download beta Mac OS X drivers from their site:
Go to Display Link to download the beta Mac OS support -- see
    http://www.displaylink.com/macbetadrivers.html
The disk image includes a very well written PDF document that explains the driver's status and limitations.

    NOTES
    * The DisplayLink driver is beta. It doesn't support 2D or 3D accelerated graphics. You can't use it to display iPhoto slide shows, for example. However, I need to be able to display a Web page, document, or PDF in the second monitor while I am working in the first. I've found this solution to be quite acceptable for this purpose.
    * Several other companies make USB video units that use the same DisplayLink support, so they should work, too. However, they are more expensive -- largely because they're set up to function as port expanders, I believe. The EVGA Plus was the only unit priced under $100 when I did my search.
    * USB does not have very much bandwidth, so you might be surprised that to hear that it's possible to use USB to drive a monitor! You'll find that the display isn't as fast as DVI, but for my purposes, I've found it quite acceptable.
    * The EVGA Plus comes with a terrible USB to mini USB cable that will cause all sorts of display problems. Replace it with the type of cable that is used to hook up digital cameras to a USB port.
    * Once everything is installed, you can use the Displays in System Preferences (or just click the icon on the menu bar) to adjust the second monitor. You can choose display resolutions (depending on your monitor's ability, of course). Rotation works. You can also right-click the second monitor and choose a different background color or graphic.
Don't expect miracles. Don't go this route if you want to run videos or games in the second monitor. And if you get an EVGA Plus, replace that horrible cable!
I hope this information is helpful.

There has been quite a lot of discussion here about driving twin displays with the mini, and more recently about the potential for USB video adapters to facilitate this, particularly in the light of several vendors claiming they have suitable MacOS devices and drivers 'almost ready'.
The DisplayLink solution seems to be the one most suggested as viable, though it's a pity they have not yet been able to move their drivers from beta - I suspect that puts a few people off. It's therefore good to hear of a real-world experience that should help others decide whether or not to go this route!

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!
    John

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • Is it feasible to set up 21 unit hotel with Mac Mini's in each room?

I am building a 21 unit condo hotel in Mexico, and want to have mini's in each room connected to 42" HDTV, the features I want are
    1. WiFi using "share internet"
    2. Skype installed for calls
    3. iChat for communicating with the front desk, restaurant and other rooms
    4. Maintaing a large iTunes collection (music, video and pictures) for viewing
    5. ability for clients to access their account (bill)
Does this make sense? and are there any consulting firms that would help me set this up?

    Hi HotinPlaya,
    This is a great plan!
Your WiFi connection should just use a WiFi router or Apple Airport Extreme Base station. Just one might not cover all of your units. The Apple base stations may be more expensive, but they are more easily chained together to create one large WiFi network.
As for the other applications, these are all very doable. The only problem would be that your hotel guests might be able to make too many changes, and you would have to spend too much of your time re-installing or reconfiguring the system or applications. I would therefore suggest that you create an admin account and a then create a separate "user" account for each computer - and make it a "Managed with Parental Control" account. this will prevent the end users (your hotel guests) from making too many changes. If you leave the systems wide-open to changes, you will soon find that you either will be hiring someone to fix all of the computers or having to give it up completely.
An even better (but costlier) method would be to use a Mac OS X Server system to setup the "client" Mac Mini's. Mac OS X Server allows you to configure all of your client systems remotely.

  • Setting up a vpn on server Mac mini

I am trying to setup a VPN on a Mac Mini with OS X Server.   I am able to connect via my internal wifi system but not external.  I had to setup my modem to port forward but should it go in or out  on the port forwarding.

Okay I will try that, when I was over my parents house the other day and they have the same internet supplier.  I noticed that they have the exact same IP address as I do and I live 20 miles away.  I also found in my modem that I can change my static IP address to something different if this is a better way of doing business.  I am now wondering if this internet supplier is using the same IP for everyone will I be able to connect to my network?  Thanks for the help, this is the first time I have tried to create a VPN.

  • Mac mini 09 Display Resolutions odd via DVI -- HDMI

Hi I've got a LG 1366x768 commercial display and it works great with an Apple TV, MacBook 2007 or MacBook Pro 2008.
However when I unplug the MacBook and plug in the New Mac mini, it gives a completely different set of resolutions - none of which work properly on the display.
When overscan is chosen on the Mac mini, it chops off the top of the menu bar. Overscan is on the MacBook and MacBook Pro and it looks perfect.
Everything is blurry no matter which resolution I choose on the Mac mini. Everything is crisp with the MacBook and MacBook Pro. This is a serious problem....
Tried switchresX and it's no help.
Anyone else using one for their home theatre with a HDMI setup?

Which LG model is it? Which HDMI jack (HDMI1, HDMI2) on the TV are you plugged into?
Some LG commercial TVs have a different internal mode for the inputs that has to be changed in the TV menu. If it thinks it is a true HDMI signal, it will automatically overscan it for you resulting in things being cut off and looking fuzzy. You have to convince it that you really want to be a PC type input that just happens to be over HDMI in order for it to display on all visible pixels. Depending on the model, you may have to plug into a specific HDMI port to even make that possible.

  • How do I set up optical surround sound on my mac mini?

    Hi all,
I have a funny situation where my mac no longer recognises my receiver as a surround sound device through the digital optical connection.  It used to, it worked for about a year and a half, then suddenly stopped sending 5.1.  2.0 still worked (mp3s, avis), but trying to send 5.1 (mkvs) ended up with no sound whatsoever, on any app (VLC, Plex).
My equipment:  2009 Mac Mini running OS 10.6, Denon AVR-3082 amplifier, connected via optical link.
I tried a complete reinstall (as it had been a while), and I remember last time I set up 5.1 on my mac mini, it was some very involved process involving Perian and changing settings in the DVD player.  I saw the default interface now supported setting up speaker configuration directly through the Audio/Midi setup utility, however this doesn't seem to work for me.  When I select multi-channel audio output, all the options except "Stereo" are greyed out.  I am using "Digital out" as the output device (only choice), and have tried 44.1 and 48kHz.  My amplifier does not support HDMI audio input, which would be the simplest solution, so I am stuck using this optical solution.
On this clean install (not even any OS updates), 2.0 playback works (mp3 through VLC), and now 5.1 playback is mixed down to stereo by default.  I have seen a number of guides online saying to use Perian, edit config files and so on, but they are all several years old so I presume somerthing has changed since.
Does anyone know how to get 5.1 output from my mac mini to my receiver, in the way it used to work for years until last week?   Thanks in advance.

You can download mail for exchange to a pc or laptop then use nokia pc suite to install it.

Anyone know a way around that?

  • Mac Mini mid-2010: List of Standard Resolutions?

Is there a list available anywhere that shows what the standard display resolutions that a mid-2010 Mac Mini will output are?
I have had a look around on the Apple website, but can only find tech specs that mention the highest resolution of each port.
I can't find anything that lists all the resolutions supported.
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply and welcome Euchre.
The plan is to use it as an in car computer, once there is a car power supply to suit it.
Not sure what display I will be using with it, but it may be a VGA LCD display, through an adapter, so it might not communicate with the Mac Mini to tell it what resolutions it supports.
So I figured that there might be a standard list of resolutions that the Mac Mini shows when a VGA display that it does not know the specs of is connected to it.
This is also to help me in finding a display that will be supported with a Mac Mini output resolution to match the native resolution of the LCD display, to ensure the best image quality.
Next problem will be finding a transflective (sunlight readable) 10 inch in car LCD display that has a higher native resolution than 800x480, which most seem to be.
    Thanks.

  • Mac Mini Monitor Blacking out

    Hey guys,
I have a 1.4ghz G4 Mac Mini and i recently purchased a samsung 205bw lcd display. I am running on the native resolution of 1680x1050 60hz refresh rate (the recommended settings for the monitor)
Overall, the monitor works great until i try to watch video fullscreen. For some reason in VLC or Quicktime, after a while the screen begins to flicker than turns black. I ran every diagnostic that samsung has and there is apparently nothing physically wrong with the monitor. I was wondering. I downloaded SwitchResX but i wasnt sure which settings to change if anyone had any ideas..
    thanx in advance

Apple has to do something about that.

Many TVs do not properly advertise 1366x768 as a resolution using the DVI EDID signalling. Sony are particularly bad at this.
On top of that the Intel GMA 950 video chip in the Mac mini is limited in its capabilities as well.
I have tried using both DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX on a Mac mini to manually adjust settings with a Sony TV but could not get a perfect result. I did find that a new Sony TV produced excellent results at 1366x768 via VGA (an older Sony produced awful results).
From other comments in these forums I get the impression that for some people at least that Toshiba and Samsung TVs do properly set the EDID signalling allowing a Mac mini to auto detect and use 1366x768 with those makes.

  • Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server - can't login with admin account

SO....i was having problems setting up network accounts from my mac Mini Server. I took it to the Apple Genius bar one night after work to get some help on why the login screen appears for Other..but could not login into any of the accounts I created.
They made an appt for me for the next morning since they had a "guy" that could help the next morning.
When I got there for my second appt..they said they don't support server issues. Only consumer products..I though the server WAS and i WAS a consumer of their products..so..they gave me a number of a consultant..of course..for pay...
So later that day I was trying some other configurations....the power came out while I was checking a monitor cable..and when I restarted I couldn't login to the master admin account.
Since mac mini server doesn't have a DVD drive..you have to boot up with their Server DVD from another computer and the Server installs it through airport.
So I did the boot up via airport from the server install DVD.
Did the Utility disk repair AND password changed. Got some error about not being to able to login if I don't change the keychains to the account.
    Rebooted the server.
    It didn't work.
So now stuck with a login window..and NO ACCESS to change anything.
    HELP!!!!

You can access to system with root account.
If you didn't enable before, boot from SLS DVD and activate from menu (after choose language).
After that, reset all the passwords (there is a menu to do that).
After that exit from installer and reboot.
At login screen you can try to login with your user and new/blank password.
If it fails, you have to login with user root and the password you choose before.
With root user, you can access to all system, be very carefull.
Now you can create a new user and import all the files (you have to do a little work with permissions)
    I hope i help you!

  • Mac Mini and my TV

I was entertaining the idea of purchasing a Mac Mini and hooking it up to my TV.  I have all the ports (HDMI) necesarry for this style of configuration.  My only question is resolution.  What should I be looking for with regards to resolution so that if I do hook up my Mac Mini to the TV, I get a clear picture...

    Hi Scorogers
I am thinking about going down the same line wanting to upgrade the resolution from my ATV2.
The Panasonic TV's HD resolution is 1920X1080. The Mac Mini on HDMI will output 1920X1200 and on Thunderbolt even higher so I do not see any reason for not getting a great picture. Hopefully someone on here has it setup and could just confirm the same..........

  • How can i connect macbook 5.1 to mac mini (2012)?

I would like to be able to use the macbook as an external drive to burn cds from itunes.  I set up remote disc, and the mac mini will find and ask permission to use my drive, but the macbook drive never responds.

Not recommending this since I have never tried it, but you may find some info on this page for hooking up a laptop (including a Macbook) to a PC. Never seen it with another Mac:

  • Can't Connect to Mac Mini Server 10.8

I want to use Screen Sharing to run a headless Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Server.app under Mountain Lion.
From my Mac Mini I can connect to my iMac on the same LAN and use Screen Sharing, but I can't do the opposite, which is what I need to do. This is very frustrating because the support for this key feature is just plain awful.
Yes, screen sharing is checked under File Sharing preferences on the Mac Mini Server. And yes, both the display and the computer are set to never sleep on the Mac Mini Server.
What must I do to connect to my Mac Mini Server from my iMac so I can run the Mac Mini Server headless?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!
