Setting Shortcuts to Open Applications

Hi,
I've been trying to set a shortcut command to open an application (for ex., Stickies). Is this something that's even possible? I've been having troubles...
I went through my System Preferences to Keyboard & Mouse to the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Then clicked on the "+" button at the bottom left to add a new Application Keyboard Shortcut. The little pop up menu appears, I select "Stickies".
Then I need to enter the Menu Title, which has the subtext "Enter the exact name of the menu command you want to add." Now this confuses me. Does this imply that the shortcut will be executing a command within the selected application, or a finder command? i.e., if I want to just open Stickies in Finder, should I select Finder as my app, and put "Open" as my Menu Title? Or is Menu Title some name for my own reference? I've tried every combination I can think of, and nothing happens.
For ease of use, I was hoping to use a F8 as my shortcut, which I've made sure isn't in use elsewhere on the shortcut key list. But I've also tried other random shortcuts (like command-option-semicolon), and again, nothing seems to happen.
Any ideas? Is it even possible? I feel as though this is much simpler than I'm making it...

Hi hothat,
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes, this is something that you can do in Tiger,
as long as the application's name is listed in the Recent Items list (that is, once you opened it at least once, and if not too many other recent items have "overwritten" it in the list).
Open Stickies then quit it.
Open System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts,
click the "+" and choose (default) "All Applications" in the first field.
Then as "Menu Title", type Stickies
(be careful, keyboard shortcuts must be named exactly the same as the original, case sensitive and all)
and finally in the last "Keyboard Shortcut" field, hit the key combination you plan to use.
Tip:
I would open System Preferences > Appearance, and choose "Applications : 50" in the "Number of Recent Items", so that Stickies would never disappear from the Recent Items menu...
--> Logout/login to activate your system changes.
--> "Does this imply that the shortcut will be executing a command within the selected application, or a finder command?"
Yes, that's how Keyboard Shortcuts work.
However, the "All Applications" option is often a good workaround for submenus, for system commands for example. A solution to try, each time it looks like a "normal" shortcut is not possible.
Good luck!
Axl

  • Shortcuts for opening Applications

I have tried to set, for instance, F1 to open Word, but it doesn't work. The way I have tried is to open system Preferences, then Keyboard & mouse, then Keyboard Shortcuts, then +, then select an application. I've tried entering "Open" and "Open Microsoft Word" under "Menu Title," then setting the shortcut, to no avail. I'd like to set shortcuts to open several different apps. Can this be done?

Will Spotlight do? Command-space, type word, press Enter. Spotlight is how I launch any app that is not already in my Dock. It's much faster than navigating through Finder windows with a mouse.
Otherwise, you can use a program like Spark to set F keys to open applications.

  • Need to assign keyboard shortcuts to open applications!

How can I assign keyboard shortcuts to open applications such as mail, safari, iphoto, fcp, shake and etc...
    Thanks in advance,
    Zia

It's a bit confusing, but you cannot assign a keyboard short-cut to launch an app. That window is for assigning a keyboard shortcut to an EXISTING menu command in the app you selected, if that menu command does not have a keyboard shortcut already.
So if you select System Preference as the app, and enter Menu Title of "About System Preferences" and enter Opt-Cmd-A as the shortcut, once you close and reopen System Preferences, Opt-Cmd-A will open the About System Preferences window, which is an existing command under the File menu that previously did not have a keyboard shortcut.
You may be able to do what you want with a macro program like Quickeys.

  • Can you create keyboard shortcuts to open applications?

    Hi everyone,
I have been trying to create some keyboard shortcuts to open individual applications but they haven't been working. For example, to open up iTunes, I assigned Command+i. But I'm starting to think this isn't possible in OS X. Is this true? Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Dustin

The Apple Help for Keyboard Shortcuts in "System Preferences" (the Question Mark "?" down at the bottom) says the following: "Note: You can create keyboard shortcuts only for existing menu commands. You cannot define keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an application or switching between applications."
I use a program called "Quicksilver" from blacktree.com . It is not easy to get used to, but it is quite powerful. To open a program (once Quicksilver is installed properly), you can either set a keyboard shortcut such as "Control-i" (or whatever you want), or use their universal opener "Control-space" and type the first letter or two of the application you want to open and then hit or type open.
My favorite feature of Quicksilver so far is the ability to recover easily any number of previous copies to your clipboard. How many times have I copied something and then before pasting it copied something else by mistake and lost the first thing I copied?!? Quicksilver lets me hit "Control-space" and then open a clipboard history window and scroll down to whatever I want to paste (I have it set for 100 items, pretty excessive, I know!). Cheers!

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for opening applications

I was just curious if it was possible to be able to set up a keyboard shortkey that would enable you to launch your applications. Like Command+1 to open up safari. etc. Wanted to know if that was possible?

Time and motion studies in terms of Gilbreth‘s therbligs do not favor your approach. The keyboard lies in the heart of the area of minimall motion requirements. The mouse requires more movement to accomplish the same task. It’s all in what’s comfortable with the user, regardless of efficiency, or what the user’s bent may be for finding other ways. Antagonistic responses are oxymoronic in terms of the definition of “help”: verb sap.

  • Assign keyboard shortcut to open applications?

Can I assign keyboards shortcuts (like ctrlshift0 or applealt1) to run applications?
    Thanks in advance.

you need a 3rd party application launcher for that. Google Quicksilver, Butler, iKeys or Quickeys.

  • Shortcut to open applications on 5800

    Hello,
I'm looking for a way to quickly browse the open apps of the nokia 5800.
The quickest way I have found so far is to click the white button, select "options" and  then choose "show open apps".
Has anyone found a way to do it faster?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As with all symbian based devices all you need to do is hold down the menu key (the white button) to show the open apps.

  • Can you set a second "Open with:" application for a file?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if something like this exists for OS X Lion or greater: you can set a default application to open a type of file, say Safari for all .html files, but can you set a second default application for a file?
I usually open files using command + o or command + down arrow from the Finder and I've often thought how good it would be to hit an alternate keyboard shortcut to open the selected file in a secondary default application.
For example, if I'm making a web page and have the .html selected in the finder I can hit command + o (or command + down arrow) to open it in Safari and if the file isn't open in my editor and is selected in the Finder I can hit, say command + option + o (or command + option + down arrow) to open the .html file in my editor.
Does anyone know if this can be achieved in OS X Lion or greater?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi all,
If anyone's interested in a partial solution, I've rigged up the following.
I ended up using an Automator action coupled with Spark to capture a keyboard key combination. Spark: http://www.shadowlab.org/Software/spark
I've used Spark before with good results, and although it's from 2008 it still works on Lion.
I created an Automator action that does two things:
    gets the selected Finder items
opens finder items in the text editor I'm using.
I then saved the workflow as an application so that Spark could run it.
I've set up a keyboard shortcut that Spark picks up and calls my Automator workflow. It all seems to work nicely.
So, I've created a specific "open selected file with <text editor>" keyboard shortcut that should do for the time being.

  • How to set a keyboard shortcut for open with VLC player

    Hey everyone!
I have reffered the earlier discussion upon creating a shortcut for the open with function and the below is the correct answer for it by using applescript editor submitted by Barney. However, I couldn't get past the 1st paragraph. It all just went over my head. Especially the "open (thefilelist) " part. Which filelist is being referred to here? All I want is a shortcut for opening files with .avi, .mpeg, and .3gp exts. with VLC player. Please help me out by providing the exact stuff I need to paste in the applescript.
    Thanks
Ok, this one works both on the finder selection and as a droplet:
    property htmlList : {"htm", "html"}
    property htmleditor : "TextWrangler"
    property textList : {"txt", "text"}
    property texteditor : "TextEdit"
    --property myappextlist: {"ext1","ext2","ext3"}
-- property myappsname: "myAppName" on run
    tell application "Finder"
set the fileList to the selection
    repeat with aFile in fileList
set theFile to aFile as string
    my myOpen(theFile)
    end repeat
    end tell
    end run on open (thefileList)
repeat with i from 1 to number of items in thefileList
set this_item to item i of thefileList
    my myOpen(this_item)
    end repeat
    end open on myOpen(aFileAlias)
set theItemInfo to info for (alias aFileAlias)
if not folder of theItemInfo then
set theExtension to name extension of theItemInfo
if theExtension is in htmlList then
    tell application htmleditor
    open aFileAlias
    activate
    end tell
    end if
if theExtension is in textList then
    tell application texteditor
    open aFileAlias
    activate
    end tell
    end if
-- if theExtension is in myappextlist then
    -- tell application myAppName
    -- open this_item
    -- activate
    -- end tell
    -- end if
    end if end myOpen

  • Setting universal shortcuts to open apps

I would like to set shortcut keys to open applications, but though this seems simple, I can't figure it out. It looks like I can only set shortcuts for specific menu items in apps.
How can this be done? Is there a 3rd party app for what I need?

  • I can't set shortcut for „Application windows"

System Preferences → Exposé & Spaces → Exposé
I can’t set shortcut for „Application windows” — first column with Fn key is OK, but the second column with mouse button doesn’t work. If I set „secondary mouse button” for „application windows”, it doesn’t work. But if I set „secondary mouse button” to „All windows”, it works! All mouse shortcuts for „All windows” or „Show desktop” work, but no mouse shortcut for „Application windows” work . The same with „Mouse button 3” and other buttons.
    Can you help me, please?

Do you see the iTunes Library icon in the window? Click on it and the use the scroll bar to get to the tracks you want.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I need some help saving time! I have lots of .groovy files that my apple doesn't know how to open and i have to select a default opening application for every single file! Is there a way to do this for multiple files or for a certain file type? thanks!

Sure. Click on a file, and then go to File-Get Info (or CMD-I) In the box that pops open, choose the app you want the .groovy files to open with, and click change all. That should do it.
